Overview

The 2022 Ford Edge starts at $34,905 and the top ST costs $43,760. This mid-size Ford SUV won't get any massive facelift like several of its other siblings in the lineup. The Ford Edge is a compelling choice, with key strengths including sharp styling, spacious cabin, and agile handling. Slotting between the small Ford Escape and three-row Ford Explorer, the Edge is just right. For 2022, the Edge will most likely feature tried and tested 2.0-liter turbocharged engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. What's confirmed is, AWD will come in as standard for the 2022 model year.

Plus, the Ford Edge will be available in 4 trim levels and the sportier Edge ST with a 335-hp turbocharged V6 engine. That said, the sturdy-looking SUV faces tough competition from its rivals like the Jeep rand Cherokee, the Nissan Murano, and the Mazda CX-9. This Ford stands out from the rest, with its standard all-wheel-drive and a high-performance ST trim, but it is the interior quality that is relatively dated.

Buying Advice

The Ford Edge is available in four trims, and one of them i.e. ST trim is performance-oriented trim. If you have the money, then go for the ST trim with eyes closed. Otherwise, we recommend going for the SEL trim, which for $3,000 premium over the base but adds features like 19-inch alloy wheels, premium audio setup, powered and heated front seats, etc. These features are a must and thus make the SEL trim perfect value proposition.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

Having got a major refresh in 2019, Ford is not giving any major update to the 2022 Edge. Starting from $34,905, the Ford Edge gets standard all-wheel-drive and a few exterior styling packages. Adding to the appeal, the Edge's interior space is complemented by decent quality materials. The sharp styling of this mid-size two-row SUV is on point, and the standard features list is gratifying.

the SYNC 4 infotainment system seen in the 2021 model shall continue to run on a tablet-like 12-inch infotainment display. We expect the 2022 model to have an update on the same, with a massive 12-inch touchscreen and standard rear parking sensors being part of the package too. The 2022 Edge will continue to get six-way power-adjustable seats and a heated steering wheel as part of the equipment package, with more safety features being made standard.

Buying Advice

We recommend you going for the SEL trim, which is for $3,000 premium over the base but adds features like 19-inch alloy wheels, premium audio setup, powered and heated front seats, etc. These features are a must and thus make the SEL trim a perfect value proposition.

Features
8.0/10

The 2022 Ford Edge will most likely be available in four trims SE, SEL, ST, and Titanium. All but the Edge ST are powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an eight-speed automatic. For 2022, all-wheel drive is standard. For more punch, the Edge ST uses a twin-turbocharged 2.7-liter V6 paired with the seven-speed automatic. Both the engines will get Auto Start-Stop technology.

The 2022 Ford Edge starts at $34,905 for the base SE trim. Net in line SEL costs $37,345, while the top-spec ST-Line and Titanium trim both begin from $41,095. The Edge ST is the top-range model starting at $43,760. All 2022 Ford Edge models also incur a destination fee of $1,245. By comparison, the Ford Edge is priced similarly to the AWD variants of the Mazda CX-9, Nissan Murano, and Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Fuel Economy
4.0/10

With the standard all-wheel-drive, the Ford Edge's 2.0L EcoBoost motor gets EPA estimated fuel economy figures of 21 mpg in the city, and 28 mpg on the highway. The 2022 Edge is expected to have a fuel tank capacity of 18.5 gallons that can help it to easily return more than 420 miles of combined driving range.

Without a doubt, the Ford Edge AWD with a 23 mpg of combined fuel economy leads here, followed by Nissan Murano with 23 mpg of combined fuel economy, and the most powerful among all, i.e., Jeep Grand Cherokee is the least efficient with 21 mpg of combined fuel economy. That said, the Jeep Grand Cherokee has the biggest 24.6-gallons fuel tank that returns a combined range of 516 miles which is the highest among all.

Interior
7.0/10

"Plenty spacious for four adults, the Edge's cabin is a comfortable place for a commute or a road trip."-Caranddriver.com

The interiors of 2022 Ford Edge are expected to do away with budget-grade material, and we can see a refreshed look with necessary upgrades. The comfort is the key highlight while the dated cabin appeal is expected to be improved by Ford this time. The tablet-like 12-inch central infotainment screen is the center of attraction. Also, you can see a much better fabric upholstery for the base trim and better quality leather upholstery for higher trims.  This mid-size Ford SUV is spacious and offers a cabin with plenty of legroom and headroom in both rows.

The Edge may feature a redesigned dashboard along with an optional third-row since the CD6 architecture that underpins the Ford Explorer is a three-row SUV platform. Stay glued for more updates from the manufacturer in the coming days. But for the time being, the base variant of the Ford Edge will be a two-row crossover and have a larger trunk space of 39.2 cubic feet which is average in the class. The rivals of the Edge also have greater cargo space, but compared to the Edge, they don’t have a spacious cabin.

The Ford Edge comes equipped with the brand's latest SYNC 4 infotainment system and a 12-inch touch screen display. This display is responsive and simple to use, and can also be controlled via redundant physical buttons. You will also get standard infotainment features including Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, satellite radio, a six-speaker stereo, Bluetooth, four USB ports, and a Wi-Fi hot spot. Overall, Ford’s SYNC system has a reputation for being the simplest and easiest on the market.

Going by the renders and spy shots, the infotainment system will lose a lot of buttons, and you will get a clutter-free and clean touchscreen with few physical knobs for climate control. Highlights of the infotainment system include:

  • SYNC4A infotainment system
  • The 12-inch touchscreen infotainment system
  • Voice-activated navigation system
  • SiriusXM Radio
  • Wireless Charging Pad
  • Bluetooth Connectivity
  • USB ports

Exterior
6.0/10

"It’s a sharp-looking rig, too, but it faces heady competition from the even more enticing competitors from Japan and America"-Caranddriver.com

The 2022 Ford Edge would most likely get small tweaks in its exterior styling and additional appearance packages for personalized appeal. the latest Ford Edge looks premium vehcile with muscular lines. The front fascia, and especially the headlights, could be redone to make it look more modern. The design language might be similar to how it has been in the previous models, but the Edge will see some tweaks around its body.

A new Adventure Package available with the 2022 Edge adds an off-road and rugged look. This package includes unique wheels, an exclusive front bumper, a roof rack with black side rails, and more. Another package is the new Black Appearance Package that adds black trim.

The Edge’s shape would remain the same, more or less. The new Ford Edge will also get a new set of 18-inch alloy wheels and a sloping roof design. There’ll be sharp bodyliners on the side profile, and you’ll get more exterior colors to choose from. The rear will see no major changes and will continue with the same LED brake lights seen on the 2021 Ford Edge.

The dimensions of the 2022 Ford Edge are rated at 188.8-inches long, more than 76-inches wide, and 68.3-inches tall. The use of a new architect will also mean the wheelbase might increase from the present 112.2-inches. The 2022 Edge will be much bigger and spacious than the rivals. Speaking of which, Mazda CX-9 is the longest SUV with 199.4-inches in length, widest with 77.5-inches in width, and has the highest ground clearance of 8.8-inches. Highlights of the 2022 Ford Edge’s exterior include:

  • 18-inch alloy wheels
  • Speed-sensitive variable intermittent wipers
  • LED Brakelights
  • Front Fog lamps
  • Powered and heated side mirrors

Safety
9.0/10

It would be too early to confirm anything about the 2022 Ford Edge’s safety ratings. However, Ford as a brand does provide its vehicles with advanced and effective safety measures as a part of Ford's CoPilot360 safety suite. Plus, the 2021 year model of the Edge has performed well under the NHTSA and IIHS safety evaluation. While the NHTSA has rated the Edge with an overall safety score of perfect 5-stars, the IIHS awarded the 2021 Edge with the ‘Top Safety Pick’ title. A major reason why the 2021 Ford Edge has been rated top-notch under the crash safety ratings is that it has quite a lot of advanced active as well as passive safety features. Some of these include:

  • Blind Spot Monitoring
  • Ford Co-Pilot 360
  • Automated Emergency Braking
  • Lane Keeping Assist
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Post Collision Braking
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Evasive Steering Assist

Competition
5.0/10

2022 Ford Edge vs 2022 Mazda CX-9

The Ford Edge has better power, but CX-9 has a torquey engine. The Ford Edge returns better fuel economy, while the CX-9 compensates for that with a bigger fuel tank. The two-row Ford Edge has lots of interior space, but the Mazda CX-9 can seat up to seven. However, the new redesign for the Ford Edge could offer third-row passenger seating. Until the official launch of that, we can not say which one would be leading with a better interior. That said, the Ford Edge is a better proposition even in the two-row configuration than the CX-9.

2022 Ford Edge vs 2022 Nissan Murano

One of the most potential rivals of the 2022 Ford Edge is the Nissan Murano. It fights hard in terms of handling, fuel efficiency, and performance and beats Ford Edge with its power-packed 3.5L V6 engine and a better fuel tank capacity. But the Murano is the more expensive of the two, still, we feel the premium is justified here as the Murano is a much better overall product compared to the Ford Edge.

2022 Ford Edge vs 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee

The Grand Cherokee is the most powerful SUV and competes hard with the Ford Edge. It has better interiors and is a lot more capable than the Ford Edge. It won’t be wrong to say that the Jeep Grand Cherokee is a proper SUV, while the Ford Edge is just a crossover. But what doesn’t go in Jeep’s favor is its poor reliability record and high upkeep cost, whereas the Ford Edge shines with excellent reliability and low upkeep cost. That said, if you are looking for a proper SUV, go for Jeep, else Ford Edge could be a better option overall.

Final Verdict

The Ford Edge is one of the decent compact SUVs in its segment, and Ford wouldn't want to fiddle with that this year. There are some new lighting features at the back of the SUV as well as within the cabin. And with the expected interior redesign and use of more premium materials inside, the Ford Edge would have for sure covered its major con. That said, even though we can't be sure about its quality in length but one thing is sure that the 2022 Ford Edge is going to create a lot of buzz when it will launch in the last quarter of 2021.
