Overview

The 2022 Toyota 4Runner is hitting the tracks with an updated trim lineup at a starting price of $37,305. The SR5, Trail Special Edition, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, Limited, TRD Pro are now joined by an all-new TRD Sport configuration in 10-exterior colors and with newly standardized HighBeam LED headlights. However, its 270 hp 4.0L V-6 will remain the standard engine under the hood having a towing capacity of up to 5,000 lbs.

The Toyota 4Runner will be available with an interior cargo capacity of up to 89.7 cu-ft and the practicality of a fuel economy of 17 MPG. Its lease deal will be as low as $506/month for 36 months at a $3,156 signing payment. Also, it has been released for sale in RWD and 4X4 layouts against the likes of other rugged SUVs such as the 2022 Land Rover Defender, 2022 Ford Bronco, and the 2022 Jeep Wrangler.

Buying Advice

The SR5 Premium with a 4X4 layout is the most balanced trim among all. It has a perfect blend of off-roading stability, interior comfort with heated front seats, and 8-speaker Audio for interior engagement. On top of that, it has a refined safety suite of Toyota Safety Sense P as standard, thereby, ensuring a safe drive as well. Along with that, it is advisable to opt for the Third Row Seating - SofTex Package at $2,315 that adds a power moonroof and SofTex seats in the third row that enhance the overall appeal and makes it a wrothy one.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

"The 4Runner remains one of the last truck-based mid-size SUVs." - cars.com

The 2022 Toyota 4Runner is majorly unchanged and continuing with its 270 hp 4.0L V-6 engine that can tow up to 5,000 lbs. Its production line begins with SR5 at $37,305 for standard RWD which gets more expensive at $52,120 for the off-road specialist TRD Pro. Furthermore, despite offering 17 MPG fuel efficiency, it can deliver acceleration from 0-60 MPH in less than 8 seconds. Moreover, it scores a J.D.Power rating of 82 that reinforces Toyota's reliability stature.

Considering the destination fee, the expense is calculated to be $1,215. Also, its resale value reduces by $7,243 in 5 years while the maintenance charges cost $4,586 separately. Though it has got that heavy-lifting mark yet its repair charge does not exceed over $700 and fuel cost amounts to be nearly $13,000 for the starting 5 years. In addition to that, one has to pay around $4,015 for insurance for the same time period. And the RWD layout on offer can be switched to available 4X4 after spending $1,875 extra.

Buying Advice

As per data, the Toyota Runner offers 41 miles extra over Jeep Wrangler, all thanks to its 5.5-gallon bigger fuel tank. The Bronco, meanwhile, can be 4 MPG more efficient than the 4Runner yet falls short by 36 miles in range practicality due to its 6.1-gallon smaller fuel capacity.

Interior
6.0/10

"The interior design looks pretty dated." - Kelley Blue Book

The unchanged interior of the 2022 Toyota 4Runner is practical and spacious yet outdated. The trim lineup has been majorly adorned with either fabric or SofTex trim, like Black & Graphite, for its seats except for the Limited configuration where it upgrades to perforated leather upholstery. These leatherette touches include accents such as Sand Beige and Redwood. The tilt/telescopic leather-wrapped steering also retains its presence in the upcoming model.

The power-adjustable seats are constant all across the Toyota 4Runner production belt, however, it is those heating and ventilation functions that have been embedded in sync exclusively for the Limited trim only. Apart from this, this 5-seater SUV features flexible space management where its cargo capacity ranges from 47.4 cu-ft to 89.7 cu-ft depending on the rear row seat positioning.

The 2022 4Runner has got a better cargo capacity than Wrangler by some 35 cu-ft. But the latter offers 3-inch more headroom and legroom in the rear row as compared to the former. Even the Defender defends its rear row space quite conveniently against 4Runner with its 7-inch extra legroom and 2-inch more headroom. Considering the infotainment unit, the 8-inch touchscreen and 8-speaker Audio come as standard in the base trim.

In addition to these, the Dynamic Navigation makes it to features list either as standard or optional right from the SR5 depending on the trim. There is a 15-JBL Speaker Premium Audio as well for a better musical experience that is standard in the Limited trim. The 4Runner can also be availed of with a Premium chrome-accent Multi-Information Display in pairing with the aforemetioned. A few of the features have been listed down:

"This legendary machine is built the old fashioned way." - Motor Trend

The 2022 Toyota 4Runner comes dimensionally unchanged as it is from the 2021 model year. But for the 2022 model year, it has received the newly added standard features namely HighBeam LED headlights and fog lights. Not just that, there are 10 exterior color options to choose from including the shades of the Nautical Blue Metallic and Magnetic Gray Metallic.

The Toyota 4Runner rides either on the 17-inch or 20-inch wheels depending on the trim level. The top receives an optional moonroof for $630 too as per trims such as the SR5 Premium. One can even invest an amount of $185 for the Roof Rack Cross Bars for enhancing the loading capacity and practicality. In the end, comes the Paint Protection Film costing $485 that adds value to its overall outlook.

From the data, it is pretty visible that the 4Runner is 500 lbs heavier and 23-inch longer than the Wrangler. This, on the whole, allows Wrangler to have a more compact body and better gradient handling on tough terrains. The Defender simultaneously is 6-inch taller, 4-inch wider, and 150 lbs heavier than 4Runner that disturbs its overall stability while going up the slope. Some of the other notable features are as follows:

  • LED headlights
  • LED tail lights
  • 17-/20-inch wheels
  • Sunroof
  • Roof rails
  • Chrome exterior accents

Safety
4.0/10

"Despite its age, the 4Runner does well in this department." - CarsDirect

Since the 2022 Toyota 4Runner is mechanically the same as that of its predecessor, so it will have a safety rating of 4-star by NHTSA and overall "Good" by IIHS. In addition to that, it has been given Toyota Safety Sense P suite as standard along with mentioned features such as:

  • Daytime Radar Cruise Control
  • Automatic HighBeam
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Automatic Emergency Braking

Competition
7.0/10

2022 Toyota 4Runner Vs. 2022 Land Rover Defender

The 2022 Toyota 4Runner has a slightly better performance but lacks the towing capacity by a huge margin against the 2022 Defender. The Defender also tends to have more seating roominess inside the cabin and fuel economy. However, it struggles when it comes to cargo volume and that too it comes at a much higher price. So, it has to be the Toyota 4Runner between the two.

2022 Toyota 4Runner Vs. 2022 Ford Bronco

The 2022 Toyota 4Runner might have an edge of towing prowess and cargo capacity over Bronco but it hardly manages to outclass it in any other segment. Be it spaciousness, fuel economy, or price tag, the Bronco is simply a better proposition to opt for.

2022 Toyota 4Runner Vs. 2022 Jeep Wrangler

The 2022 Toyota 4Runner has lower cabin space for passengers as compared to Jeep Wrangler. But 4Runner has more power performance and cargo capacity along with better towing capacity at a relatively decent higher price. Hence, Toyota takes the lead here.

Final Verdict

The 2022 Toyota 4Runner is a fine 5-seater SUV that entails both safety and off-roading nudges. The interior accents and exterior could have been improved slightly to make it more appeal but its functionalities compensate for those. The handling and driving experience with its mechanical attachments are at par with all the other rugged ones. So, it is surely at the top of the wishlist.
