Overview

It can be safely said that Toyota is known to make some rugged utility vehicles as well as slick fun-to-drive cars. The Toyota Land Cruiser is almost an icon in the world of utility vehicles and the 4Runner lives up to the reputation of the former. The 2023 4Runner marks 40 years and gets a limited edition run of the 2023 Toyota 4Runner 40th Anniversary Special Edition to commemorate it. To know more details on the new 4Runner 2023, check out the video below by "Raiti's Rides" where Joe checks out if the 4Runner makes sense even today.

The exterior gets a special livery for this occasion and gets some interior special touches. This goes very well for buyers as many like to modify their 4Runners as per their taste. The reliable powertrain is carried forward while driver aids like a blind-spot monitor and rear cross-traffic alert are now offered as standard. The Toyota 4Runner 2023 price starts at $40,155 for the base SR5 model while the top-end 2023 TRD Pro 4Runner model goes upwards of $54,620.

The Toyota 2023 4Runner has not received a complete overhaul for a while and is expected to undergo one for the 2024 model year. The 2023 4Runner is available for sale at all dealerships in 6 different trim options in both RWD and 4WD setups. Though the SUV falls a bit behind in terms of technology, the practicality, reliability, and capability are unmatched in the segment. It faces competition against other prominent off-roaders like the Ford Bronco, Jeep Wrangler, and Land Rover Defender

Buying Advice

The Toyota 4Runner gets a handsome list of features right from the base trim and it is adequate for day-to-day driving needs. However, we would recommend going for the 4WD layout with the base trim for a decent off-roading experience without spending more for the higher variants.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The Toyota 4Runner 40th Anniversary Special Edition is the only major update this year and is limited to only 4,040 units. It gets tri-colored body graphics, 17-inch bronze alloy wheels, bronze stitching on leatherette seats & shift knob, and special edition badging across the interiors. The V6 is carried forward and there is no addition of features apart from the standardization of blind-spot monitor and rear cross-traffic alert.

The 4Runner 2023 tops the J.D. Power reliability rating with a score of 84/100 but ties with the likes of Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia. Expect the 5-year cost of ownership to be around $50,800 which is pretty much on par with the segment standards. A spacious cargo area, potent towing capacity, and impressive safety standards make the Toyota 4Runner a formidable offering in the midsize SUV segment.

Features
8.0/10

The 2023 Toyota 4Runner will see no upgrade or reshuffling in terms of trim levels barring the inclusion of the 40th Anniversary 4Runner. The SUV is offered in 6 trim levels to cater to a wide variety of shoppers, and the lineup starts off with the base SR5 trim. The 2023 4Runner price starts at $40,155, the TRD Sport costs $43,015 while the SR5 Premium gets a price tag of $43,215. The Toyota 4Runner TRD Off-Road gets a starting price of $44,000 while the TRD Off-Road Premium carries a price tag of $46,850.

The new 40th Anniversary Special Edition is priced at $47,720, Limited trim is priced at $49,390, and the top-end TRD Pro goes for $54,620. Fuel Economy
7.0/10

Previously, off-roaders used to get sizable motors, mainly V6s and V8s, to tackle the tough terrains out there and always fell short in terms of delivering decent fuel economy figures. While many have gone the way of forced induction, that is not the case with the 4 Runner 2023. While the 4Runner 0-60 figures aren't that impressive, the 2023 4Runner MPG is pretty average too.

The standard V6 is not great with fuel efficiency and is rated to return 16 MPG in the city, 19 MPG on the highways, and 17 MPG combined. Opting for the 4WD drivetrain brings down the Toyota 4Runner gas mileage further below. The large 23-gallon fuel tank compensates for the driving range, offering a maximum of 437 miles of range while cruising on the highways.

The Land Rover Defender returns better city and highway mileage numbers than the 4Runner courtesy of the compact motor, along with much better driving range numbers too. The Ford Bronco is the champ here with its 20mpg of city mileage but its highway mileage is just at par with the rivals. Disappointingly, the Bronco gets the smallest gas tank here, a 16.9-gallon unit. The Jeep Wrangler is marginally better at returning city mileage when compared to the 4Runner but surprises with its 25mpg of highway mileage.

Interior
8.0/10

We haven’t seen any significant upgrades in the 4Runner’s interior and it has been feeling dated for the last ten years as well. Despite that, the cabin of the 4Runner feels as robust as it can be with a handsome amount of standard features on offer right from the base trim onward. The dashboard of the Toyota 4 Runner gets a solid, SUV-like design to begin with but looks quite busy with plenty of buttons for different controls.

The armrest hides another storage space and the glove compartment is of decent size as well. The front seats offer adequate headroom and legroom while the rear seats feel tight for tall passengers due to lack of adequate legroom. Interior color options now include Black/Graphite, Sand Beige, and Redwood based on the trims. The cargo capacity is impressive at 47.4 cu-ft of space behind the rear seats, and the maximum cargo capacity measures in at 89.7 cu-ft.

The 2023 Toyota 4Runner also comes with a standard 8-inch touchscreen infotainment unit that offers a vibrant display, a user-friendly menu layout, and a few fixed buttons for easy navigation. Even though the system lacks some of the latest quirks and features you’d find on its rivals, the standard Android Auto and Apple CarPlay prove to be adequate while driving.

The Land Rover Defender has returned after a long time and in an all-new avatar. Hence, its interior design is way more advanced than the 4Runner’s cabin. It is also the most comfortable of the lot. Ford did an exemplary job by combining the latest Bronco’s cabin design with a retro theme. Although it is very capable & tough, it isn't the most comfortable one here. The Jeep Wrangler’s cabin is as crude as it can be but is unique since it is washable and the doors can be removed completely as well.

Some of the key interior features available with the 2023 Toyota 4Runner include:

  • 40/20/40-split reclining and folding second-row seats
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel & Simulated leather upholstery
  • 120-volt power outlet & Auto-dimming rearview mirror
  • Power-adjustable driver's seat & Wi-Fi hotspot
  • Heated front seats & Dual-zone climate control
  • 8-inch touchscreen display w/Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
  • HD & Satellite radio

Exterior
8.5/10

The 4Runner has matured enough. However, Toyota seems to be enjoying steady sales of the SUV and hence hasn't seen many cosmetic changes. Nonetheless, the SUV still looks absolutely fine and is still loved by shoppers looking for a rugged and practical off-roader. The 2023 Toyota 4Runner will not get any design updates either, hence the SUV will return with the same angry mustache-like face.

Right from the base SR5 trim, the SUV gets LED headlamps and underbody skid plates. Hence, all you need is to have the SUV in a 4WD layout, and you’ve got a practical and capable off-road vehicle on a budget. From the side, the chunky wheel arches make the 4Runner look always off-road ready while the rear-end design is quite forgettable. The most impressive part is that the 2023 4Runner ground clearance is pretty impressive at 9.6 inches.

The Land Rover Defender made a spectacular comeback with an all-new design. From the front, it looks quite intimidating and looks different from every other Land Rover SUV on sale at present. Much like the Defender, the Ford Bronco also made a spectacular comeback and lived up to the hype with its excellent off-roading prowess and rugged design. It also features removable doors in selective trim levels like the famous Wrangler. The Jeep Wrangler has been a long-standing warrior in the segment, and irrespective of newer and better rivals, none can actually match the legendary design.

Safety
8.0/10

The 4Runner shows its age here as the aging platform cannot outperform its rivals here. The 2023 Toyota 4Runner safety rating of 4-star from NHTSA is just decent while the IIHS also rates it "Good" in most aspects of their tests. As standard, the 4Runner gets three ADAS features which are Adaptive cruise control, Forward collision mitigation, and Lane departure warning. The basic features include traction control, an anti-lock braking system, and blind-spot monitoring.

Some of the standout safety features include:

  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Forward collision mitigation
  • Lane departure warning
  • Anti-lock braking system
  • Blind-spot monitoring system
  • Traction control

Competition
8.0/10

2023 Toyota 4Runner vs. 2023 Land Rover Defender

The Land Rover Defender might be on the expensive side of the price bracket when compared to the 4Runner and it justifies the price tag with its better performance, more technology, and fuel economy figures. However, in terms of off-roading prowess, the 4Runner can evenly match the Defender with its TRD models that get off-road specific suspensions and dedicated drive modes. But the Defender betters the 4Runner in terms of interior design and comfort too with more space for the rear passengers than what the 4Runner has to offer.

2023 Toyota 4Runner vs. 2023 Ford Bronco

The Ford Bronco is way more advanced than the 4Runner in terms of design and simply obliviates the latter in terms of fuel economy figures as well. In terms of off-roading prowess though, both the SUVs are almost evenly matched but the Bronco has the advantage of the removable doors that call for some extreme off-roading sessions too. In terms of performance, the Bronco is slightly better than the 4Runner and the safety aspect is better on the former as well.

2023 Toyota 4Runner vs. 2023 Jeep Wrangler

Much like the Toyota 4Runner, the Jeep Wrangler is also quite an old offering in the class but has stood the test of time with its design and off-roading prowess. The Wrangler comes out as a better option for extreme off-roaders due to its removable doors while the cabin is more practical than the 4Runner during off-roading sessions. The 4Runner offers better practicality with its more practical cargo area and is safer too with more safety features as standard than the Wrangler.

Final Verdict

If you don’t mind the 4Runner’s age and subpar fuel economy numbers, it is one of the best options in the class for your off-roading needs. Moreover, the SUV can be a trusted daily driver too but only for yourself since the rear seats lack legroom for occupants. The pricing of the SUV is competitive and it offers a handsome list of standard features along with safety techs right from the base model. Toyota also offers a few off-road-centric models of the SUV which can deliver some incredible performance out in the wilderness.
