Overview

The 2023 Acura MDX is a luxury midsize SUV that offers great comfort, the three rows of the car are usable and this definitely is a standout character in the segment. The 2022 model of the car was a fairly reworked model and the 2023 MDX will be entering the market without much more changes. The car is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine capable enough to produce 290 horsepower and 267 lb-ft of torque.

The engine is mated to a ten-speed automatic transmission unit and will be available in a front-wheel drive train. All-wheel drive will be available for the top-end trims. The car is coming in a price bracket of $49,000 to $61,000 approximately and the Acura MDX will be going against the likes of Lexus RX 350L, Volvo XC90, and Audi Q7.

Buying Advice

The recommendations are based on last year. since the 2023 Acura MDX is a carry-forward car. Considering all the trims, it is better to go for the A-spec trim of the Acura MDX. The A-Spec gets a sporty body kit, ventilated front seats, and a premium sound system. So each penny you spend over the base model will be completely worth it.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The SUV segment is the current trend-setting segment in the car market. Most of the customers are very much interested in going for SUVs. The trend is like an epidemic that it has spread to other segments as well and all are trying desperately to be SUV wannabees. The road presence, practicality, and family-friendly nature make SUVs stand out. Now the mid-size SUV segment is a very competitive one with all the brands offering whatever they can to attract potential customers. Acura is a trusted brand in the market that produces cars that offers great value for money and performance. For the year 2023, they are introducing the Acura MDX into the mid-size SUV segment.

Fuel Economy
7.2/10

The MDX is not a very frugal car and high fuel economy is not something that we expect from a mid-size SUV class. The car returns a mileage of 19 MPG in the city and 26 MPG on the highway and it has got a combined mileage of 22 MPG. The fuel tank capacity is 18.5 gallons and this results in a combined range of 416.2 miles.

When compared with the competition, the Volvo XC90 is the most efficient car from the group returning a combined mileage of 25 MPG. The Audi Q7, and the Lexus RX 350L return a similar combined mileage as that of the Acura MDX at 22 MPG. The Audi Q7 has the largest fuel tank in the group with a capacity of 22.5 gallons followed by the Lexus 350L and Volvo XC90 with capacities of 19.2 gallons and 18.8 gallons, respectively.

Interior
9.0/10

The MDX comes along with a nice interior. Both the first row and the second row are spacious and airy. The third row, however, will be more suitable for kids rather than adults. The cabin altogether has a premium feel. The push button release in the second row is pretty comfortable to use. The middle seat in the second row can be removed, which makes a captain seat setup in the second row and makes the third row more easily accessible. The large windows ensure great visibility. The seats are supportive and comfortable and the fit and finish of the car never disappoint. Altogether the interior feels nice and welcoming.

Now when the competition is taken into consideration, almost all the cars in the segment offers similar space in the interior section. But when the cargo space is compared, the case is very different. Let us take the full cargo capacity of the vehicles and compare, that is cargo capacity up to the front row. The MDX beats all of its opponents by a clear margin in this section by providing a class-leading cargo space of 95 cu-ft. This is close to 25 cu-ft more than the nearest competition the Audi Q7. The Q7 has a cargo capacity of 69.6 cu-ft. The next one to enter will be the Volvo XC-90 with a cargo space of 65.5 cu-ft, the Lexus RX 350L, however, disappoints with a cargo space of 34.1 cu-ft.

Standout interior features of the 2023 Acura MDX include:

  • 8-way adjustable driver seat
  • Tilt and telescopic power adjusted steering
  • Heated front seats
  • Dual-zone automatic airconditioning
  • Acura link mobile hot spot
  • Remote keyless entry

How intuitive is the 2023 Acura MDX’s infotainment system?

The interface of the MDX’s infotainment system is a bit problematic. Apart from this issue, there are a lot of features that Acura has to offer onboard. The center screen is big and wide and ensures good readability. A built-in navigation system is also available and this works smoothly. The audio system also offers a good feel and won't disappoint the user. Wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto come in as standard and integrating your smartphone with the car is not again a big problem.

Standout infotainment features in the 2023 Acura MDX are:

  • Wireless Apple Car Play and Android Auto integration.
  • Amazon Alexa integration
  • Steering wheel controls
  • Fixed antennae
  • SiriusXM satellite radio
  • Speed sensitive volume control

Exterior
8.0/10

The Acura is a very sharp-looking car, the body curves sharply incorporated in the car gives it a muscular appeal. The headlight is very well designed, which gives the car a very serious yet attractive face. The front grills integrate very well with the overall design of the car. The proportionate-sized wheels ensure a very good stance for the car. Talking about the dimensions of the car, the MDX has a length of 198.4 inches and a width of 78.7 inches. The height of the car is 67.1 inches and the wheelbase is 113.8 inches.

Compared with the competition, the wheelbase of the MDX is a little less than that of the Q7 and XC90. Both of them have a wheelbase of 117.9 inches and 117.5 inches. The MDX, however, has a better wheelbase when compared to the RX 350L. The tallest among the lot is the XC90 with a height of 69.9 inches. The Acura MDX will be the widest car in the segment with a width of 78.7 inches.

Standout exterior features of the car include:

Safety
9.0/10

The Acura MDX is coming with a lot of safety features and driver aids on offer like the adaptive cruise control, traffic jam assist, standard lane departure warning and standard automated emergency braking. The crash test results of the car are not yet available but since the car is a carry-forward model it is expected to get a safety rating of 5 stars which was the rating of the 2022 model. Some of the standout safety features of the 2023 Acura MDX are:

  • Blind spot monitoring system
  • Acura link emergency SOS
  • Front collision mitigation
  • Driver monitoring alert
  • Vehicle stability assist
  • Rear cross traffic monitor

Competition

2023 Acura MDX vs Lexus RX 350L

The Lexus is definitely a budget-friendly car like the Acura in the segment. Like the Acura, the Lexus too offers a lot of useful features at a comparatively low price point but when performance is considered the Acura outsmarts the Lexus. Also, the puny cargo space of the Lexus is not even comparable with the Acura. So, if you are a Lexus fan, only then opt for the RX 350L otherwise Acura is the clear winner here.

2023 Acura MDX vs Volvo XC90

The XC90 is a very capable car in the segment be it the features it uses, the space it provides, and the performance it delivers. But the car has now aged well and a complete make-over is expected soon. Moreover, it is pricier than the MDX, so from the value for money perspective, the Acura MDX will be the winner here.

2023 Acura MDX vs Audi Q7

The Audi Q7 has to offer a lot more than the Acura in terms of performance, handling, and driving fun. The car is a very established one in the market too. The catch however is that all these additions come with a wide price difference and make no sense for a normal buyer. The Acura MDX is offering many features at a lower price bracket than the Q7 and most of these features are even standard. So unless you want that pure German driving experience, go for the Q7 otherwise the MDX is the pick for you.

Final Verdict

Definitely, the Acura MDX is a well-mannered, decently driving, and feature-rich car which is great value for money also. The MDX is spacious and family-friendly and it offers a luxurious cargo space. In the driving department too, it is not a disappointing car even though it is not an exciting one. The MDX is not a car that shines in a particular department rather it is a car that does every job in a decent manner. The Acura offers a lot of features as standard and without demanding a higher price. The build quality of the car is also very good and the car comes with famous Japanese reliability. So if you are looking for a mid-size SUV that offers great value for money, look no further, the Acura MDX is the car for you.

Stay away from 22 and 23s. They all have transmission gear whining based on feedback from Acura engineers. No fix in sight. Kia and Hyundai have better vehicles. Do not buy this vehicle but test drive and listen for yourself or call Acura out on it.

              Pros - Expensive

              Cons - Poor transmission deign

              Having buyers remorse
