Overview

A car from Land Rover's top-tier Range Rover family should work just fine if you're searching for one that combines off-road ability, opulent interiors, and the status of an upper-crust image. However, the 2023 Range Rover Sport is a close substitute if your budget is a little less forgiving. The Sport's silhouette is comparable to that of the more costly Range Rover despite its lower size, but with more attitude. You have a good selection of options thanks to a trio of powertrains that includes a hybrid inline-six, a plug-in hybrid inline-six, and a jumbo twin-turbo V-8. The interior is upscale and equipped with desirable technology, such as the most recent infotainment system from Land Rover, the Pivi Pro, and features that support both on- and off-road driving.

Buying Advice

We believe the trim to choose will be the stronger SE Dynamic. Having more horsepower will likely give it a slight advantage on the interstate and in town. Considering that this trim isn’t very far-fetched from the base variant makes it’s totally worth the additional price. The SE Dynamic also gets the Terrain Response 2, which manages the engine and power delivered to the wheels depending on various drive modes and terrain the vehicle is in.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The starting price of the Range Rover Sport is greater than that of comparable midsize SUVs like the BMW X5, the Mercedes-Benz GLE-class, and the Volvo XC90 because all this elegance doesn't come cheap. Without a doubt, though, the Sport earns its position in the Range Rover line-up honestly and for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the fact that it appears to be expensive. The updated 2023 Land Rover Range Rover Sport luxury SUV has a starting price between $84,350 and $122,850 for the top model. Compared to the 2022 Range Rover Sport, which has a basic price starting at $70,900, it represents a substantial price hike.

Features
8.0/10

The gasoline-run Range Rover Sport is segregated into three trims and the line-up begins with the base P360 SE and this particular model will sell for $84,475. Shell out $91,475 and the buyers get the P400 SE Dynamic which is based on the same 3.0L turbocharged inline-6 cylinder engine but produces more power than the base variant. However, for the ones looking to go all out in terms of luxury as well as power, there is a $122,975 variant called the P530 First Edition that comes standard with a 4.4L twin-turbo V8. The Range Rover Sport comes standard with various features, making even the base trim feel fully loaded. Some standout features include a 13.1-inch display with Pivi pro, 20-way adjustable front seats with perforated Windsor leather, 3D surround camera, and Meridian sound system along with a few safety tech and driver assistance features.

The new 2023 Range Rover Sport was made official to the public in the month of May 2022 and interested buyers can place orders while the car would reach them by the end of 2022.

Fuel Economy
7.2/10

Land Rover forecasts that the P360 and P400 models to achieve 20 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway, while the V-8-powered P530 will achieve 15 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway. The 23.8-gallon fuel tank allows for a rather decent overall range, to allow some practicality over a long stretch of asphalt.

The Land Rover carries fuel economy very similar to what is offered by BMW and Mercedes-Benz but due to the larger gas tank, the Range Rover Sport is blessed with the overall range advantage. However, the best fuel economy here is offered by Volvo due to its less powerful engine.

Interior
9.0/10

For this iteration, the interior design has adopted a more minimalist style, with fewer switches and buttons and a more streamlined design throughout the cabin. Customers can select from appealing two-tone designs in both fabric and genuine leather upholstery. The details in the dark-tinted chrome are really upscale-looking. Front seats with power adjustments are standard, but it is also possible to purchase chairs with up to 22 different adjustments, massage, ventilation, and winged headrests. It is possible to purchase an integrated air filtration system, which is said to lessen odors, bacteria, viruses, and allergies in the cabin. The SUV also has a carbon trim that isn't finished. According to Land Rover, it is forged rather than woven like conventional carbon fiber, and a layer of protective resin is integrated rather than applied on top. Other materials utilized inside include sustainable faux leather and a "technical fabric" that will be placed on the upper doors and in other key spots to enhance the sound system's acoustics.

The Volvo is the only vehicle here to offer a third row of seating, making it a better choice for larger families. However, considering just the front two rows, the Mercedes offers the largest passenger room, closely followed by the Land Rover. Things aren’t all that great when it comes to the cargo area and Volvo takes the win in terms of the maximum space offered. The Range Rover Sport falls behind taking the last spot with a maximum of 72-cu-ft of storage area with the rear seats folded.

Some standout interior features on the 2023 Land Rover Range Rover Sport include

  • Windsor/Semi-Aniline leather upholstery
  • 22-way front seat adjustability
  • Four-zone climate control
  • Illuminated metal tread plates
  • Heated front and rear seats
  • Front seat massager

How intuitive is the 2023 Land Rover Range Rover Sport infotainment system?

With a big 13.1-inch curved touchscreen handling infotainment duties and a 13.7-inch screen positioned in front of the driver to show the instruments, the Range Rover Sport's new dashboard gives plenty of digital space. The Pivi Pro interface from Land Rover is the company's best shot at in-car entertainment to date. While floating above the leather dashboard of the Range Rover Sport, the displays are sharp and bright and appear high-end. All Range Rover Sports include Alexa from Amazon, and they all come standard with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Also smartly fitted is a wireless smartphone charging pad on a shelf directly below the infotainment panel. There is an optional 29-speaker Meridian audio system that includes speakers in the front and rear headrests of the Range Rover Sport.

Some of the standout infotainment features on the 2023 Land Rover Range Rover Sport are

  • Pivi Pro infotainment system
  • Speaker Meridian surround sound system
  • 13.1-inch touchscreen
  • 13.7-inch digital gauge cluster
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • 3D surround camera

Exterior
9.0/10

The third generation Range Rover Sport, which debuts in 2023, is more opulently styled than the outgoing second generation model. Smaller grille openings, narrower headlamps, shorter overhangs, and smoother surfaces are a few notable exterior design modifications. Additionally, the rear section has full-width lighting components and a more contemporary appearance. The 2023 Range Rover Sport takes some of the larger Range Rover's modernist design characteristics but also goes its own way with a tapered roofline and distinctive front and back styling. When viewed from the side, the headlights appear more integrated and are thinner. All of the moldings, door handles, and windows are flush with the body of the car. Larger Land Rover lettering is visible in the rear, and a horizontal black strip covers the tailgate and the taillights. To make the back end appear less cluttered, the bracket for the rear license plate was lowered. The new Range Rover Sport also boasts a longer wheelbase, which increases the legroom in the backseat.

The dimensions of all the SUVs differ with minor margins and while the 8.5-inches of ground clearance on the Range Rover might not be the highest here, the adaptive air suspension and Terrain Response 2 system can increase the space all the way up to 11.1-inches to allow the vehicle tackle serious off-road trails with ease.

Some of the standout exterior features include

  • Pixel LED headlights
  • Signature DRLs
  • 21/22/23-inch alloy wheels
  • Hands-free liftgate
  • Heated power exterior mirrors
  • Automatic windshield wipers

Safety
9.0/10

The 2023 Range Rover Sport hasn’t been crash tested and since the vehicle has been completely redesigned, the ratings cannot be based on the previous model. However, considering the standard safety features and past performance of the brand in keeping their SUVs safe, it is evident that the new model would fare well in a crash test.

Some of the standout safety features available with the 2023 Land Rover Range Rover Sport are

  • Lane-keep assist
  • Lane departure warning
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Automated emergency braking
  • Front and rear parking aid
  • Adaptive off-road cruise control

Competition
8.0/10

2023 Land Rover Range Rover Sport vs 2023 BMW X5

The BMW X5 happens to be the most comparable vehicle to the Range Rover Sport. The BMW is much more affordable in comparison but the quality variation between both these vehicles is shown very evidently. The BMW is slightly quicker but take the vehicles off-road and you’ll be surprised by what the Range Rover can do. The Rover also feels like a much better build vehicle, making it the better choice of the two.

2023 Land Rover Range Rover Sport vs 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE-class

The Mercedes-Benz will definitely feel slightly roomier than the Range Rover Sport but that is the only upper hand the SUV carries. The Range Rover feels much more modern, more complete, and more premium in terms of its offering, making it worth every additional penny it asks for. The GLE class also lacks drive engagement, making it slightly boring from a driver’s perspective.

2023 Land Rover Range Rover Sport vs 2023 Volvo XC90

There is no match for the Volvo against the Range Rover Sport in terms of power and performance. The Land Rover also offers more features with build quality that makes the Volvo feel cheap but the only place where the Swedish automaker takes a clear win is in terms of the cabin and passenger space as it allows seating for 7 occupants and also has massive cargo space. The Volvo is also affordable, making it the more accessible SUV out of the two.

Final Verdict
7.8/10

The third generation Range Rover Sport features a stunning new design with a very practical cabin layout, combining luxury and user-friendly characteristics in an effortless manner. While the pricing might be on the higher side, it is absolutely reasonable for what the SUV offers. Land Rover has left no room for the rival to catch up and performs great both on and off-road. The brand has also gone to extremes in order to test the capability of their vehicles like always and completed a spillway climb, proving the versatility of the SUV.
