Overview

Land Rover SUVs used to come in brick-shaped designs but never compromised in their off-roading prowess. Fast-forward to the last decade, Land Rovers did evolve into styling and luxurious SUVs, and even the ultra-luxurious models such as the Range Rover Autobiography also possess significantly better off-roading capabilities than its rivals. With the Range Rover Evoque, the British brand introduced a new design theme, and it glorified the design with the introduction of the Velar back in 2017. Even though the SUV carries the nametag of pre-production Range Rovers prior to 1969, it is more focused on city driving with some decent off-roading prowess at its disposal.

Buying Advice

The base S trim, with its handsome amount of standard features, offers great value. However, for more performance, the P340 R-Dynamic S trim is recommended.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

Since the Velar’s launch, the SUV hasn’t received any updates yet, and the 2023 model is going to be a carry-over model too. However, to reduce the confusion within the trim levels, the 2023 Velar will get only four simplified trim levels along with a new and sporty-looking HST top trim with the base price kicking in from $61,575. The engine options remain the same with a base turbocharged I-4 motor and a more powerful turbocharged I-6 unit. In its class, the Velar will compete against the BMW X5, the Porsche Macan, and the Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class.

Features
8.0/10

Some of the Land Rover SUVs are infamous for their dizzying trim options but, with the velar, the brand went easy on the shoppers this time. The 2023 Velar will be offered in four trim levels which are the base S that gets only the P250 option, the R-Dynamic that gets two engine configurations under the P250 and P340, and the top-end HST that gets the P400. It is to be noted that the numerical value followed by the “P” denotes the power outputs of the models. The base S starts off with a lofty price tag of $61,575 and offers standard features such as perforated leather seat tops, a power-adjustable steering column, and a panoramic sunroof among other features. The R-Dynamic S trims get two engine configurations, the first one being the base turbo I-4 while the second one is the turbocharged I-6. In the features section, the R-Dynamic S offers special cosmetic upgrades, premium leather upholstery, and the steering wheel covered in perforated leather. The range-topping HST sees only one configuration, the P400, where the I-6 motor has been tuned to produce almost 400 horsepower. Apart from the engine, the trim also gets features such as a heated steering wheel with suede wrapping, air suspension, a heads-up display, and big 21-inch alloy wheels.

Release Date

As per the latest information, the 2023 Range Rover Velar SUVs will start hitting the roads by fall 2022.

Fuel Economy
7.1/10

Luxury SUVs were infamous for their lackluster fuel economy figures, but the latest ones with downsized powertrains have improved the scenario to a significant extent. Due to no change in powertrains, the 2023 Range Rover Velar will return an average of 21mpg during city runs and 27mpg while out on the highways. The SUV gets a rather small 16.6-gallon gas tank that limits its driving range numbers.

The BMW X5 impresses once more with its fuel efficiency aspect when compared to the amount of power and torque it produces. It returns a similar city mileage to the Velar while the highway mileage is slightly lower at 25mpg. Despite that, its 22-gallon gas tank takes care of the driving range woes. The Porsche Macan is the least fuel-efficient SUV, despite having a compact powertrain. The Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class takes the middle position here with its decent EPA ratings but gets to save the day with its huge 22.5-gallon gas tank.

Interior
8.0/10

The 2023 Range Rover Velar will see no changes on the inside. However, the Velar doesn’t need any interior upgrade soon either. Land Rover follows the same minimalistic yet modern interior design with the Velar. The dashboard gets two displays where the lower screen handles a majority of the vehicle’s controls such as climate controls and media player controls. The dashboard gets sleek air-con vents with metal accents surrounding them while the steering wheel also gets a metallic treatment on the lower part. The wide center stack houses the gear selector stick while there are small covered storage cubbies for additional practicality. A few creature comfort features are offered as standard right from the base trim such as leather wrapping for the steering wheel with heating, 14-way power-adjustable front seats with driver’s seat memory settings, and auto-dimming IRVM. The base S trim also gets perforated leather seating surfaces along with a fully power-adjustable steering column, something the rivals only offer in their highest trim levels. The cargo capacity behind the rear seats is impressive at 34.4 cu-ft.

The BMW X5 has one of the best cabins in the segment and is more spacious than the Velar’s cabin as well. In terms of design, the X5 gets a digital gauge cluster along with a huge infotainment display dominating the dashboard in the middle. The X5’s cargo capacity could’ve been better but is at par with what the Velar offers. The Porsche Macan has an uber-cool interior design with a wide center stack drawing all the attention with its array of illuminated capacitive touch controls. The gauges are analog to give that sporty feel while the infotainment system is sizable, as you’d see on most other rivals here. The Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class’s cabin makes it feel like an S-Class on a budget and it even beats the X5 in terms of cabin space, especially for the occupants. The cargo capacity is again at par with the rivals here.

Some of the key interior features available with the 2023 Land Rover Range Rover Velar include:

  • Power-adjustable steering column
  • Perforated leather seating surfaces
  • 14-way power-adjustable front seats with driver’s seat memory settings
  • Leather-wrapped/perforated suede-wrapped steering wheel with heating
  • Premium leather upholstery
  • Auto-dimming IRVM
  • Two-zone automatic climate control

How intuitive is the 2023 Land Rover Range Rover Velar’s infotainment system?

Usually, we expect vehicles carrying premium price tags to offer an excellent infotainment experience, and the 2023 Range Rover provides just the right experience as well. By default, the Velar gets a massive 11.4-inch touchscreen display with standard Android Auto and Apple CarPlay along with voice control, satellite radio, and USB A and C ports. The audio duties are taken care of by a premium 12-speaker Meridian audio system that offers a rich listening experience with a total output of 400 watts.

Some of the most notable infotainment features available with the 2023 Land Rover Range Rover Velar include:

  • 11.4-inch touchscreen infotainment display
  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
  • Satellite radio
  • Turn-by-turn navigation
  • 12-speaker premium Meridian audio system with 400-watt output
  • Voice control

Exterior
9.9/10

The Land Rover Evoque is the first crossover from the brand where the design was more streamlined than any other Land Rovers from the past. The Range Rover Velar takes the design forward with its curvy and aerodynamic shape. If only the SUV drove just like it looks. Nonetheless, at the front, the LED headlamp units sit flush with the front fascia along with the rectangular front grille and the hood gets a clamshell design. The side profile of the SUV remains simple with slight curves around the fenders. The rear-end has a rather interesting appeal with sleek LED tail lights and an extended design that makes the Velar stand out in the crowd as well as among its siblings. The ground clearance is standard at 8.3 inches while it can be increased to almost 10 inches with the air suspension setup.

The BMW X5 still manages to look aggressive in a good way despite getting the biggest front grille ever since its launch. With the recent update, the X5 got sleeker in terms of overall design along with getting a sleek pair of tail lights. It also boasts a practical ground clearance of 8.7 inches. The Porsche Macan still looks like a baby Cayenne but like its bigger sibling, the SUV now looks more aggressive and those four-point LED DRLs look spectacular the moment you turn on the ignition. It is the shortest one here with the least wheelbase which seems to have affected its cargo space. The Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class looks slightly understated from the outside when compared to the competitors here but gives a sophisticated appearance nonetheless.

Some standout exterior features include:

  • 19-inch alloy wheels
  • All-LED headlamps, tail lights, and DRLs
  • Panoramic sunroof
  • Power-operated tailgate
  • Rain-sensing automatic wipers
  • Express opening and closing window glasses

Safety

Only a handful of vehicles from Land Rover undergo crashworthiness tests from both the NHTSA and the IIHS. However, the Land Rover Velar stays among the lot that goes untested. Even though the Velar hasn’t been crash tested, the SUV boasts a solid safety aspect with a premium build and standard safety techs. Right from the base trim, the SUV gets several ADAS systems such as driver monitor alert, forward collision warning with mitigation, lane departure warning with lane keeping assist, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.

Some of the standout safety features include:

  • Forward collision mitigation
  • Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert
  • Lane keeping assist
  • Lane departure warning
  • Driver monitor alert
  • Dual-stage front passenger and driver’s airbags

Competition

2023 Land Rover Range Rover Velar vs 2022 BMW X5

The BMW X5 is a veteran in the segment and has been having a successful run for quite some time now. It is also among the few offerings that strike a perfect balance between luxury and practicality with its cavernous cabin, oodles of standard and luxury features, and sizable cargo space. In terms of performance too, it beats almost every rival in the segment in its base configuration. The Velar also loses out to the X5 in terms of performance and fuel economy but fights it off in terms of design and comfort.

2023 Land Rover Range Rover Velar vs 2022 Porsche Macan

Porsche did showcase its ability to make SUVs that can be sportier than almost anything out there and can stick to the tarmac like the sportscars from the brand. The Macan is one such example even though it shot to success due to its bigger sibling, the Cayenne. When compared to the Velar, it is naturally sportier and matches with the latter almost evenly in terms of comfort. However, it does make less power and lower fuel economy than the Velar. Also, the cargo capacity on offer is one of the lowest in the segment.

2023 Land Rover Range Rover Velar vs 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE -Class

The Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class is the closest thing to having an S-Class-like experience in the segment due to the premium design and the plush cabin that the SUV provides. In terms of performance, the GLE-Class is almost equally matched to the Velar and gives the latter a run for its money in terms of comfort too. The cargo capacity is also at par with the Velar as well as with the rivals.

Final Verdict

The Range Rover Velar goes a bit out of the norms when it comes to the design part, and it does stand out from the crowd too. The SUV also offers a memorable experience once you step inside, even with its base trim. Despite being on the pricier side, it offers a plethora of standard techs along with plenty of ADAS features to ensure the complete safety of the occupants, some of which are only available at higher price points when it comes to its rivals. Overall, if you want a comfy urban SUV with better off-roading capabilities than others in its class, the Velar should be on top of your preference.
