Overview

One of the most popular segments in the American market today is the mid-size crossover SUV, and to own it up, the Kia Sportage gets a generational update this year. Kia has made the 2023 Sportage bigger and better than the previous generation which makes it bolder, feature-loaded, and more capable than ever before. There is also a 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid on offer with AWD drivetrain that will also join the lineup. Check out the video below by "Car Confections" to know if the Sportage truly is the King of crossovers.

This new generation brings a lot of updates over the previous generation model and also adds a new Sportage PHEV model that is set to offer 32 miles of EV range. The price for the Kia Sportage 2023 starts at $26,290 which translates to a price hike of a whopping $2,200 over the previous model year. The Sportage has already been released and is available for sale in 7 trim configurations which include the optional AWD drivetrain.

The Kia 2023 Sportage gets only a single powertrain in its non-hybrid guise which offers sufficiently quick acceleration performance of 8.6 seconds in its segment. The 2.5L 187 hp four-cylinder engine is standard across the lineup and the aptly tuned suspension ensures a composed ride and handling. The Sportage X-Line and X-Pro models feature the AWD drivetrain as standard while the other trims get it as an option The top competitors of the 2023 Sportage are the Honda CR-V, the Hyundai Tucson, the Nissan Rogue, and the Toyota RAV4.

Buying Advice

The 2023 Kia Sportage SX trim which gets a starting price of $32,590 is the one we would suggest as it offers great value for its buyers. Buyers living in harsh weather conditions can opt for the AWD drivetrain at an added cost of $1,800.

At this price, it offers various creature comforts like a 12.3-inch touchscreen system with an onboard navigation system & Kia Connect connected services, blind-spot monitor, forward cross-path detection and braking, adaptive cruise control, hands-free liftgate, panoramic sunroof, LED interior lighting, and 18-inch alloy wheels.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The brand provides the new Sportage with plenty of color options to help the buyer customize their vehicle. Sportage also provides the utmost safety to the occupants and is expected to secure impressive scores in the crash test conducted by the IIHS and the NHTSA. There are seven major trim levels available for the 2023 Kia Sportage SUV with a number of packages to offer. The company provides an all-new plug-in hybrid powertrain that is said to improve performance as well the efficiency.

The Sportage 2023 gets a reliability rating of 83/100 from J.D. Power puts it in the middle of the pack in the segment which is led by the likes of the Chevrolet Equinox and Subaru Forester. Expect the 5-year cost of ownership to be around $43,250 which is on par with the segment standards. Kia offers finance options for the Sportage starting at 6.75% APR for 48 months with a monthly payment of $609. Lease deals for the 2023 Kia Sportage start at $315/month for a duration of 36 months and 10,000-mile annual mileage.

The X-Line trim gets you some off-roading capabilities at $31,890 while the SX trim gets you plenty of creature comforts for a cost of $32,590. The X-Pro models starting at $36,090 get you the AWD drivetrain as standard and some much-needed rough road capabilities.

Fuel Economy
7.5/10

The 2023 Kia Sportage is rated to return 25 MPG in the city, 32 MPG on the highways, and 28 MPG combined for its base engine. The AWD powertrain on upper trims offer a gas mileage of 23/28/25 MPG in city/highway/combined conditions respectively. This puts it way behind its rivals in the segment.

The Kia Sportage comes with a 14.3-gallon fuel tank capacity and is estimated to travel up to 458 miles on a highway over a full tank with its base engine. If top-class MPG ratings are what you seek, then spending a bit more for the Sportage hybrid should be the way to go. It is rated to return 42/44 MPG in city and highway conditions as per the EPA and costs just $1,200 over the base Sportage.

Sadly, the Kia Sportage comes with the worst gas mileage as compared to the Honda CR-V, the Nissan Rogue, and the Toyota RAV4. The AWD version further reduces the economy figures making it a less efficient SUV than other competitors in the segment. Rivals like the RAV4 and Rogue also employ a larger gas tank which translates to a much longer driving range.

Interior
9.0/10

The number of tech features that are available inside the cabin, even in the cheapest trim, is impressive in the 2023 Kia Sportage. The SUV is exceptionally well-built, gets premium material quality, and is spacious for both passengers and their luggage. Shorter drivers in the car may have some difficulty with the center cowl but otherwise, the visibility is also sufficient enough. There is a generous amount of legroom up front and even at the rear. Add to that the cargo space of 39.6 cu-ft which can be extended to up to 74.1 cu-ft by folding the rear seats, and you have a winner.

Apart from Sportage’s entry-level variant, interiors of all trims come with an abundance of standard equipment, including dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, and wireless phone charging. Furthermore, only the base model gets a polyurethane steering wheel. All the upper models also come with leather-wrapped steering wheels. The 2023 Kia Sportage's infotainment system is actually fairly feature-extensive and user-friendly, despite being rather simple to use.

The base LX comes with an eight-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, a six-speaker sound system, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. One must go for the EX trim at least for a larger 12.3-inch curved touchscreen infotainment display. It also comes with SiriusXM and wireless charging. Only the SX and upper trims receive an upgrade to the sound system which is an 8-speaker Harman Kardon system. Every model comes with a front USB-C charging port, and the EX and higher variants also have a rear port.

Only the Honda CR-V offers similar space as that of the Sportage as the Rogue and RAV4 fall short in terms of rear-seat legroom and trunk space. The Toyota RAV4 again loses out in terms of the premium appeal inside its cabin while the CR-V too feels pretty basic in its lower-end models. The Rogue looks pretty premium and gets plenty of class-leading features as well, making it the only competition to the premium appeal of the Sportage interior.

2023 Kia Sportage interior color options:

Exterior
8.5/10

The front fascia of the 2023 Kia Sportage is predominant with boomerang-style daytime running lights. It also features a new Tiger nose grille with a floating design, giving it a considerably bolder and more robust look than the 2022 Sportage. Other exterior features that set it apart from the conventional small crossover include angular fenders, sharp shoulder lines, and taillights with notch shapes.

The car comes with 17-inch alloy wheels as standard equipment, whereas upper models have 18 or 19-inch wheels. Roof rails, a panoramic sunroof, and an attractive motorized tailgate are also included. The Sportage SX Prestige adds LED foglights to its standard headlights, taillights, and daytime running lights. The Sportage SUV stands with a ground clearance of about 7.1 inches as standard which is pushed up to 8.3 inches for the off-road specific models.

The Kia 2023 Sportage is a muscular giant that is longer compared to the Hyundai Tucson with which it shares its platform and powertrain. In terms of styling, the Sportage styling may or may not be of your liking. In comparison, the Honda and Toyota follow a much more conservative styling. The RAV4 boasts its geometric styling which, in our view, looks outdated. The Nissan Rogue also looks conventional, especially when compared to other cars in this segment.

Safety
9.0/10

While the current generation of Kia Sportage is yet to be tested by the NHTSA, the previous generation model scored a perfect 5-star safety rating from the NHTSA. Even the IIHS has rated the last-gen Sportage with the "Top Safety Pick" accolade. Therefore, we expect similar ratings for the fifth-generation model once it undergoes the testing.

That said, there are a plethora of safety features available with, ABS, a rearview camera, lane-keep assist, stability and traction control, lane departure warning, hill start assists, driver attention warning, and rear park distance warning. Kia also offers a class-leading 5-year/60,000-mile warranty on all its products along with a 10-year/100,000-miles warranty on its drivetrain.

Competition
8.0/10

2023 Kia Sportage vs 2023 Honda CR-V

The Honda CR-V might not be able to cope with the Sportage in terms of acceleration performance but it completely outshines the Kia in the fuel efficiency department. Add to that the higher reliability factor, better resale value, and superior build quality, and Honda seems like a clear winner.

But Sportage fights its way back with its exhaustive warranty, jam-packed features and technology, and affordable price tag. The 2023 Sportage also offers AWD capability which is lacking in the CR-V. Therefore, it is a pretty evenly matched comparison, but in our opinion, it is the CR-V that edges forward marginally.

2023 Kia Sportage vs 2023 Nissan Rogue

To begin with, the Rogue outperforms the Sportage in both speed and fuel economy. Although the 2023 Nissan Rogue and the 2023 Kia Sportage have practically the same features, the former feels a bit superior. The Kia Sportage strikes a good balance by providing two engine options, but the Nissan Rogue only has one naturally aspirated engine.

While the Sportage performs admirably in terms of its drivetrain, the Rogue excels in terms of practicality and continues to be the more spacious and comfortable of the two. Hence, unless you are going with the Kia Sportage with the turbocharged powertrain, the 2023 Rogue would be our suggestion.

2023 Kia Sportage vs 2023 Toyota RAV4

The 2023 Kia Sportage is slightly less expensive as compared to the 2023 Toyota RAV4. The power output of the Toyota RAV4 is substantially more than the rival, and it doesn’t disappoint us with its torque delivery as well. Although both the cars reach the 60 MPH mark at the same time, the RAV4 dominates with its quarter-mile timing.

The RAV4, thus, is a better choice for persistent acceleration. In terms of styling, the RAV4 is no match for the Kia Sportage. The interior, as well as the exterior, looks absolutely stunning and outright better than the Toyota SUV.

Final Verdict

The new 2023 Kia Sportage is a promising SUV with loads of features to offer. The car offers amazing handling dynamics and a better quality of ride to the users. The cabin feels premium and easy to use. The large touchscreen infotainment display is user-friendly and enhances the overall quality of the interior. The attractive body remains to be one of the best in the segment. The car comes with a standard FWD and has a number of configurations to offer with an optional powertrain.

For the 2023 Kia Sportage, the fuel economy is decent but not the best in class. The all-new Sportage SUV also does justice with its safety features. It is expected to receive the highest ratings from IIHS and NHTSA as its previous generation. The body of the SUV also feels robust and tough on the outside. The best trim from the lineup to be considered for buying is the SX Prestige. The feature-loaded trim is an excellent choice in the SUV segment.

Best Compact SUV in the segment

Pros - ["Interior is amazing and modern", "Mpg is better than a gas car", "Safety tech is the most updated"]

Cons - ["Mpgs could be better", "Wireless Android auto not present", "Body roll is higher than a sedan"]

Sporage Hybrid is the most advanced Compact SUV beating its rebadged sibling Hyundai Tucson hybrid in terms of interior upgrades in the 2023 model. Rav4 is way behind in terms of safety and luxury tech, where as Kia and Hyundai advance ahead with 100k warranty and amazing luxury interiors.

Great SUV with little notes on things to lookat.

Pros - ["Safety class is very very good", "Design is spacious and more convenient that other SUVs", "Love the safety of inside outside cams and all information tables on dash board."]

Cons - ["I feel like the gas mileage could or should be higher being cylinder", "The way is revs up when your climbing or going up or down an encline", "All XLine models should have The white fog lights under the headlights in bottom black grill."]

Sportage has a great capacity for loading and unloading, seats are very road trip worthy and front and rear AC amd moonroof help out the ride tremendously,. This is definitely for small family with time to ride. Love it from head to tou and very sporty looking up close and from a far.

Great car for going on road trips.

Pros - ["Big screen", "Fancy look"]

Cons - ["Inside is a little bit small.", "Better gas mileage"]

Overall this suv has been great. I have took in 29000 miles so far and no issues. It's a little bit small but getting everything you want in a suv you will survive. Inside looks Great with the black and gray leather seats. Also the panoramic sun roof is a big plus.
