Overview

The Equinox is Chevrolet's most-selling SUV, and overall the second-most-selling vehicle in Chevy's fleet. Even though Chevy hasn't made a substantial change to the SUV for a while now, Chevrolet has been teasing a new Equinox EV for some time now. The changes for the 2024 Chevrolet Equinox are limited to just feature additions and new paint colors. But there's the upcoming new 2024 Equinox EV which is one of the most promising Chevy SUVs to buy in 2024.

The gas-only Equinox is still able to compete in the market which is seen in its demand even in the used car market. The 2024 Chevrolet Equinox price starts at $26,600 and goes all the way up to $33,400. Expect the 2024 Equinox release date to be around fall 2024 with the Limited Edition 2RS being the first model to hit the streets. The Equinox EV, which borrows design cues from the more expensive Blazer EV, is expected to have a starting price of $30,000.

The Chevrolet Equinox is powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine which offers decent performance. Riptide Blue and Lakeshore Blue are the two new paint colors on offer. The Driver Confidence II package is now available for the LS trim as well and adds a blind-spot monitor & rear cross-traffic alerts, but costs $200 more than before. There are no other changes and it faces stiff competition from the likes of 2024 Mazda CX-50, 2024 Toyota RAV42024 Honda CR-V, and 2024 Ford Escape.

Buying Advice

For the 2024 model year, we recommend opting for the sporty-looking 2024 Equinox RS. It gets plenty of necessary standard features and yet keeps the prices under check. We also suggest opting for the $1,580 RS Leather package that adds leather interior trim and a 7-speaker Bose audio system.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2024 Equinox is the same old SUV, coming with some new colors and a new package. Nothing less and nothing more over the previous model year, there have been no talks about the fourth generation of the vehicle. This is quite surprising considering that the third generation was launched back in 2018. However, Chevy has launched a new EV version for this model, which will be sold differently. Deliveries of the new Equinox should start by the end of October 2023.

Chevrolet offers attractive buying options which include a 2.9% APR. Equinox lease deals start at $269/month for a 24-month tenure only $2,129 due at the time of signing. Expect the 5-year cost of ownership for Equinox 2024 to be around the $41,400 mark, which can be considered high for the segment standards. That said, the Chevrolet Equinox reliability rating of 85/100 from last year by J.D. Power is class-leading. Expect those numbers to be carried forward for the 2024 model year.

The top-of-the-line 2024 Equinox Premier starts at $31,800 with all the bells and whistles on offer. Engine and Performance
8.5/10

The Chevrolet Equinox is a midsize crossover SUV that packs not much but some punch. It employs a 1.5-liter turbocharged Inline-4 engine, and all of the trims come with the same powertrain that delivers a respectable 175 horsepower and 203 pound-feet. It is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The vehicle comes with FWD as standard, but an AWD drivetrain is also available for the one who likes to go all-out.

The Equinox offers a smooth and comfortable ride experience most of the time while sometimes it can be a bit jerky over bumps and potholes, and longer stretches of bad road can make it feel quite unpleasant inside the SUV's cabin. The suspension overall feels a bit too soft at higher too soft at a higher speeds which eventually leads to an uncomfortable experience. But the handling of the vehicle saves the riding flaws of the vehicle, the steering feels quite responsive and it handles well around the corners with an average amount of body roll.

The Chevy SUV delivers good braking performance just like its predecessors, mostly because of the brakes that it comes with. The brakes are better than average and are tight and responsive. This midsize SUV just delivers the right amount of power for your everyday chores, making it a good daily driving vehicle in terms of power and performance. However, when compared to other SUVs it's just average.

In terms of power and performance, among all the four midsize SUVs in this list, the Mazda CX-50 comes in the first position, because of its aggressive pricing and the blend of a well-refined engine and transmission which produces a good amount of power, it goes from 0-60 within 7.2 seconds. Now in the second position comes the Honda CR-V, because of its quick 0-60 with 7.4 seconds and, it has average top speed, It is closely followed by the Ford Edge whose 2024 0-60 is not available, but considering that it is similar to the 2023 model, the Ford Edge comes at third position.

Fuel Economy
6.2/10

The 2024 Equinox is a relatively fuel-efficient vehicle, that allows you to save up some of your money on fuel costs, while still enjoying all the features this midsize SUV provides. The rating of it is around 26 MPG in the city, 31 MPG on the highway, and 28 MPG combined. Overall Equinox offers a good balance of both efficiency and driving range.

That makes this SUV somewhat a good choice for people who are seeking a vehicle to save money by purchasing fuel but without losing on-the-road capabilities. So overall, this vehicle is quite fuel efficient, providing good fuel economy along with average driving ranges. Also, the tank capacity of this SUV is average.

In terms of fuel economy and driving range, the first position is taken by the Honda CR-V which has an eye-catching fuel economy, which is one of the best in its segment and, also it has an impressive driving range but has a below-average fuel tank capacity. Now in second place comes the Ford Edge which offers a below-average fuel economy and impressive driving range because of its humongous fuel tank capacity. In third position comes the Mazda CX-50 which has just an average fuel economy, however, the driving range that it provides can be considered good. And now the last position is taken by Chevrolet Equinox which has an above-average fuel economy but a not-too-respectable driving range and that justifies its position but surprisingly it comes with a good fuel tank capacity.

Interior
7.0/10

Chevy's Equinox comes with a simple and functional interior that is quite spacious and is filled with a comparatively average amount of tech and normal features, that somewhat enhance the not-so-good riding experience that the SUV delivers. The base trim comes with premium cloth leather upholstery while the higher trims come with leather upholstery. Other than that the dashboard looks a bit outdated when compared to its rivals.

The 2024 Equinox comes with an array of infotainment features that keep the driver and passengers connected and engaged while on the road but not much in the base trim. The system inside is overall quite easy to use. For its segment Equinox just provides what is needed, nothing flashy or modern. Some of the infotainment and connectivity features that enhance the connectivity and infotainment experience are a 7-inch colorful touchscreen a bigger one is available on the higher trims.

The seats of this Chevy are comfortable but only for short rides, in long rides, you would just want to get out of the vehicle. The base trim's interior does not come with that many features but it's adequate. The trunk space is also quite low for its segment. So Equinox might not have the best features available in its interior compared to its rivals but is quite spacious and for the price of it, it is understandable.

In terms of interior and cargo space, the first place is taken by Ford Edge which provides the most spacious interior, also with a handsome dashboard and the cargo capacity of it is one of the largest in its segment. Now in second position comes the Honda CR-V which also comes with quite a spacious and well-crafted interior, that is backed by its good amount of cargo space. In the third position comes the Chevrolet Equinox which has an average-looking interior with a good amount of cargo space. And the last place is taken by the Mazda CX-50 which is not too far behind the Equinox, it comes with a very modern-looking interior that is comfortable and spacious, other than that the cargo space is also quite good.

Standout interior features:

  • Remote keyless entry

  • Noise control system with active noise cancellation
  • SiriusXM satellite radio &  Wi-Fi hotspot capable
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration

Exterior
5.0/10

Chevy's Equinox showcases a slightly bold exterior that gives a dominating feeling and also catches some attention. This midsize crossover SUV's dimensions measure around 183.1 inches in length, 72.6 inches in width, and 65.4 inches in width, and has a wheelbase of 107.3 inches which is not the largest but is just average in size.

Other than that the Chevy is one of the lightest SUVs in its segment weighing around 3274 lbs. The base trim comes with 17-inch aluminum wheels as standard, 18-inch ones are available only on the Premier trim. There is also an option to add 19-inch wheels. The unique LED headlights enhance its already dominating look, however, it should be noted that this SUV is one of the smallest in its category.

When it comes to the exterior, well nothing comes close to the Ford Edge as it takes the first position. This SUV not only is the largest among the four cars but is also one of the largest in its segment. It is followed by the stunning CX-50 in the second position, which is also big and has the most ground clearance among its rivals. Now in third place comes the CR-V which comes with a bold look and sleek lines and is one of the heaviest SUVs among the four. And at last, position comes the Chevrolet Equinox which is the smallest and the lightest of these four and comes with a bold and aggressive-looking exterior.

Safety
7.0/10

The 2024 Equinox is a very safe vehicle just like its predecessor, the built quality of this vehicle is also quite good and it offers several features that enhance the safety of its passengers and its drivers. Just like the 2023 model, the 2024 Equinox has also received five out of five stars from NHTSA, but the IIHS rating is still not available.

The features that enhance the already safe Chevy SUV such as Automatic Emergency Braking, Stability Control, Traction Control, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keeping Assist, Forward Collision Alert, and many more. Overall the vehicle is quite a safe one coming with several safety features that simply enhances the safety of all the accommodates, but it is not the safest vehicle in its category.

Safety features include

  • Automatic Emergency Braking
  • StabilityControl with Traction Control
  • Forward Collision Alert
  • Lane Keep Assist
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Following Distance Indicator

Competition
8.0/10

2024 Chevrolet Equinox vs. 2024 Mazda CX-50

Both the 2024 Chevrolet Equinox and the 2024 Mazda CX-50 fall under the midsize crossover SUV segment. Both of these vehicles offer a good amount of features and capabilities, but the CX-50 is on a different level when compared to the Equinox. The CX-50 dominates the Chevy SUV in most aspects. In terms of pricing, the Equinox is much cheaper than the Mazda SUV. The only aspect where the Equinox is better than the CX-50 is the interior spacing and other than that there are no aspects where the vehicle comes in front of the Mazda SUV. So overall the better choice between these two is the Mazda CX-50.

2024 Chevrolet Equinox vs. 2024 Honda CR-V

Both of these SUVs are filled with features and both of these have an aggressive starting price range, while the Equinox is much cheaper. The Chevy SUV is much smaller in size when compared to the CR-V, but when it comes down to the features provided, the CR-V takes the clear win because of the sheer amount of features that Honda provides with this midsize SUV. Both SUVs come with a front-wheel-drive as standard, also an all-wheel-drive is available as optional. The CR-V wins in all aspects against the Chevy Equinox. And if you’re looking for a worth-the-money midsize SUV in the market, going for the CR-V will be the better choice.

2024 Chevrolet Equinox vs. 2024 Ford Edge

The Chevy Equinox and the Ford Edge come under the midsize crossover SUV segment that offers features, power, space, and practicality. The Equinox is much more affordable than the Edge. There are no aspects where the Equinox comes ahead of the Edge, even though is quite more expensive, it dominates over the Chevy SUV. So in short if you are a powerful, fuel-efficient, and good-looking midsize SUV and overall more worth the money then the Ford Edge will be a much better choice among the two. However Equinox’s topmost trim comes for almost a similar price to the base trim of the Edge, and well the top trim gives a tough fight to the Edge.

Final Verdict
8.0/10

Whether you should put the Chevy Equinox on your list, first of all, depends upon your preferences and your budget as well. So if you’re in the market and you’re looking for a midsize SUV that provides good performance, has good fuel economy, and comes packed with some looks then the Equinox might not be a good choice for you. It is a bit slower than most of its direct rivals and the ride experience is good till a certain point. However, the vehicle provides top-notch safety and handling. And even though it is not the best or one of the best in its segment, it shines in many aspects for its price. So if you want a midsize SUV then there are lots of other choices that are much better than the Equinox.
