Overview

The 2024 Chevrolet Malibu is going to hit the market by the end of this year, and with its almost a decade-old design it's still going to compete against the other midsize sedans in its segment. The Malibu was just a trim for the Chevelle and later it was converted into a model in 1978. And in 1998 Malibu entered the market as a midsize sedan. The Malibu now is the only sedan that is offered by Chevrolet as of now.

Now the 2024 model comes all in with a few more features, nothing too fancy. It is mostly the same as the 2023 model. The sedan comes with the same 1.4-liter Turbocharge Inline-4 engine with the 1-speed Continuous Variable Transmission that produces around 163 horsepower redlining at 5700 rpm and 184 pound-feet of torque redlining at 3000 rpm. And it comes with front-wheel-drive as standard.

The interior and the exterior are all more or less the same. The interior of its is just okay-ish and nothing too fancy just like the exterior of it, and the design also looks very old when compared to the other cars in the midsize sedan segment such as the 2024 Honda Accord, the 2024 Kia K5, and the 2024 Subaru Legacy.

Buying Advice

We recommend the RS trim as it offers an adequate amount of features for its price. It comes with the same 163 hp 1.5-liter Turbocharged engine which provides power that is just adequate to drive it quickly. Other than that it also comes with a more sportier look. Some of the key features that make it different from the other trims are the 18-inch aluminum wheels, chrome grille surrounds, black grille inserts, and dual exhaust outlets. Also, the RS trims also showcase a Black Chevy bowtie emblem and black Malibu badges. So overall as you can see that this trim showcases many features that make it different from the other trims, also comes with many features for an affordable price.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2024 Malibu even though is the model for the 2023 year, it just feels too old and clunky when compared to its competitors in the midsize sedan segment. Almost nothing has changed, in this new model. This sedan comes for a starting price of $25,100 and it can go up to $28,100. It is offered in three different trims, and also it comes with three special editions which come with desirable features that you would like in this old sedan. It is only available on the LT 1&2 trim. All of the trim comes with the same 1.5-liter Turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, which is just average in terms of power and performance. It is not the best or one of the best cars in its segment. It's just a below-average vehicle, although Chevy keeps upgrading the tech and basic features of the vehicle.

Features
5.0/10

Chevy offers three trims with the 2024 Malibu that are the LS trim which comes for $25,100, the RS trim which comes for $26,000, the LT trim which comes for $28,100 and the 2LT trim which comes for $31,500. The base trim of the Malibu comes with 16-inch wheels as standard, bigger wheels are available in the higher trims. It comes with not too many top-notch features however the number of features that it offers is adequate for it to compete against the other vehicles in its segment. Some of the features basic and tech features that the Malibu offers are an 8-inch LCD touchscreen display, a 6-speaker audio system, Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, MacPherson, and 4-link front and rear suspension, and many more. Overall it can be clearly seen that the Malibu is not a very feature-filled vehicle but somehow it has been competing against its competitors and it keeps doing so.

Engine and Performance
8.3/10

Malibu’s performance can be characterized as a sluggish and underpowered sedan. The 2024 model comes as the ninth generation model that was launched almost a decade ago, and it had undergone very few changes when compared to the 2023 model. The 2024 model comes with a 1.5-liter Turbocharged Inline-4 engine that comes with a 1-speed CVT that produces 163 horsepower redlining at 5700 rpm, and 184 pound-feet of torque that redlines at 3000 rpm. This midsize sedan is not the fastest in its price range or segment and feels criminally underpowered. It goes for 0-60 in 8.4 seconds and goes up to 130 mph. Also, it only comes with front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive is not available in this car. All of the three trims come with the same engine. And overall it can be said that the Malibu delivers an adequate amount of power and ample performance, however, when compared to its competitors it is quite slow and sluggish.

In terms of both power and performance, at first position comes the Subaru Legacy, which even after being one of the cheapest of the bunch delivers quite an amazing performance, it goes from 0-60 in just 6 seconds and goes up to 130 mph. In the second position comes the powerful Kia K5, which easily goes from 60 to 0 in just 6.2 seconds and is closely behind the Legacy. And now in third position comes the Honda Accord, which easily goes from 0-60 in 7 seconds and goes all the way up to 130 mph. And at last, position comes Chevrolet Malibu which is the slowest among the four vehicles and its engine feels quite sluggish and underpowered, it goes from 0-60 in 8.4 seconds which is quite slow when compared to its competitors and has a top speed around 130 mph.

2024 Chevrolet Malibu Ride and Handling

The Malibu is quite an easy car to drive however during long drives it won't feel as comfortable when going for short drives, other than that it is also pretty quiet inside the cabin. This midsize sedan comes with MacPherson front suspension and 4-link rear suspension which suppression the jerking on bumps and potholes quite well. And along with the competent chassis, the vehicle offers quite comfortable short rides but when it comes to long rides, it will just make you want to go home as soon as possible. The handling of this car is also quite good and easy, it also feels quite stable around the corners with an average amount of body roll. So overall the ride and handling performance makes it a good car in its segment. However, it lacks the features which its rivals come with, but somehow it manages against them. Well, whatever the car delivers in terms of ride and handling is just as good to make people add this vehicle to their list.

2024 Chevrolet Malibu Braking Performance

The Malibu is the only sedan that is offered by Chevrolet and the braking in this midsize sedan is quite average for its price and segment, however, it is known for its smooth and quite responsive braking, other than that it comes with no many but adequate amounts of features that are available as standard and enhance it's the overall braking of this vehicle, some of the features that get the limelight when it comes to the car’s overall braking are Automatic Emergency Braking, Stability Control with Brake Assist, etc. Also, the front and rear brake rotors are quite decent in terms of size. The size of the front brake rotors is around 11.8 inches and the rear brakes are around 11.3 inches in size. So overall the braking of the Malibu is neither the best nor the worst, it just just as average as the car.

In terms of overall braking, the first position is taken by the Honda Accord, as it comes with very responsive and smooth brake, along with tons of features that enhance its already impressive braking. It comes with tons of features regarding safety which many of its competitors fail to provide. Now in the second position comes the Kia K5 with average brake rotors that stop the vehicle quickly and also quite smoothly. And in the third position, comes the Subaru Legacy which offers smooth, responsive, and stable braking that is delivered with the large brake rotors, and it also comes with many advanced braking features. At last, position comes the Chevrolet Malibu, which offers smooth and okayish braking performance also it offers the least amount of braking features offered among the four vehicles, and falls behind the other three vehicles as they offer more and better.

Fuel Economy
4.0/10

Not much has changed in the 2024 Maibu in terms of fuel economy and driving range as the numbers provided by Chevrolet are almost the same. This midsize sedan comes with a tank capacity that is similar to many vehicles in this segment and also has good fuel economy. It rates around 28 MPG in the city, 36 MPG on highways, and 30 MPG when you’re doing a bit of both. The driving range of this vehicle is also quite good for its price, for a full tank it can go for 442.4 miles in cities, 568.8 miles on the highway, and 474 miles on both the highway and the city. So overall the Malibu might not be a great car but it provides a good fuel economy and driving range for an affordable price.

In terms of both fuel economy and driving range, the first position is taken by none other than the Honda Accord, both the fuel economy and the driving range it delivers are quite impressive. Now closely behind it, comes the Legacy in second position which also provides quite an impressive fuel economy and driving range and it also comes with the largest tank capacity among the four cars. Now in third position comes Kia K5 which closely comes above the Malibu, this midsize sedan delivers a respectable fuel economy, an average fuel tank capacity, and also good driving ranges. Now at last, the position comes the Chevy Malibu, this vehicle delivers good fuel economy, fuel tank capacity, and overall good driving ranges, and also it is not too far behind the Kia sedan.

Interior
6.0/10

The Chevy Malibu comes with quite a functional and comfortable interior, that feels very outdated when comparing it to its rivals. This vehicle can accommodate easily 5 people including the driver. The overall interior feels quite cheap as it is filled with plastic and the base trim features cloth upholstery which is okay for its price, However, the Malibu is quite spacious and the overall design and features of it are also quite functional. Some of the features that this midsize sedan comes with are front bucket seats, a monochromic driver information display, a theft deterrent system, and many more. Also, the trunk capacity in this midsize sedan is quite good. And overall it can be said that the Chevy Malibu’s interior is ergonomically good yet feels very outdated because of the tech features provided inside the car.

2024 Chevrolet Malibu Infotainment

The 2024 Malibu comes with a pretty simple yet functional infotainment system, replete with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment display along with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration, and a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot. The Chevy sedan further enhances the infotainment by integrating Google Assistant and a 6-speaker sound system, and voice command through the phone. Overall the infotainment system in this midsize sedan is user-friendly and is also quite functional, although it feels quite outdated when comparing it to its competitors. It should be noted that even the highest trim comes with a wireless charging pad as standard. No matter how old the Malibu looks, Chevrolet has been updating the infotainment and the connectivity of the vehicle to keep it in the competition.

Standout infotainment system:

  • 8-inch touchscreen multimedia system
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration
  • Google Assistance built-in
  • 6-speaker sound system
  • 4G mobile Wi-Fi Hotspot
  • Wireless charging pad

Exterior
6.0/10

The 2024 Chevrolet Malibu comes with the same exterior design and features as the 2023 model. This new model still comes with the same old exterior design since the 9th generation has been launched with slight tweaks here and there. If you still consider the vehicle you should remember that even though the design looks old it still showcases a bold look with sleek lines and the higher trims come with LED headlights and many other features that slightly enhance the old-ish exterior. The vehicle is also quite large in size, it is around 194.2 inches in length, 73 inches in width, 57.3 inches in height and it also features a decent wheelbase of 111 inches. Chevy did everything to enhance the average exterior by providing features and a new color as well. Also, the Malibu is expected to enter its 10th generation with the 2025 model where it will get a complete upgrade and makeover. So overall the exterior of the Malibu is okay-ish but functional and for its price, it is quite average.

In the third position comes the which similarly comes with a bold and okayish exterior. Safety
4.0/10

Safety is one of the segments where Chevrolet does not compromise as it offers tons of features in this car, does not matter if it is the base trim or the highest trim. This Chevy sedan comes standard with Automatic emergency braking, Front pedestrian braking, Lane keeping assist along with lane departure warning, Forward collision alert, and Following distance indicator. This vehicle ensures the safety of its passengers and drivers, with 10 airbags that it comes with, and other than that there are also some available safety features such as Adaptive cruise control, Rear traffic alert, and Automatic Parking assist. The safety ratings of this vehicle are still not out as it is yet to be tested by NHTSA and IIHS, but considering that there are no major changes between the 2024 and 2023 models the results are likely to be the same.

Safety features include

  • Lane-keep assist
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Automatic parking assist
  • Following distance indicator
  • Lane departure warning
  • Forward Collision Warning

Competition
8.0/10

2024 Chevrolet Malibu vs. 2024 Honda Accord

Both the Chevrolet Malibu and the Honda Accord are two very well-built vehicles in the midsize sedan segment. However, the Accord offers much better performance and fuel economy, and almost all the things, this vehicle completely dominates the Chevy Malibu in almost all the aspects available. Although Malibu is cheaper it provides an adequate amount of features but it is very much outdated when compared to Accord. In short, if you’re choosing one vehicle between these two then it is not a tough job, you should simply go for the Accord, as it will be a much better and more modern option than the old Malibu.

2024 Chevrolet Malibu vs. 2024 Kia K5

Both the Chevrolet Malibu and the Kia K5 belong to the same midsize family sedan segment. Both these vehicles provide good power and performance, but the K5 is much quicker than the Malibu in terms of 0-60 while the top speed is most likely to be the same, in most of the segments other than just the fuel efficiency the Kia K5 more or less dominates over the Malibu. And overall the K5 is a much better choice in its segment as it provides many modern and basic features, also the vehicle looks much more modern than the old-looking Malibu.

2024 Chevrolet Malibu vs. 2024 Subaru Legacy

The Malibu and the Legacy are two sedans fighting off in the same segment also both of these vehicles offer a good amount of features offered as standard. However, the Legacy proves to be a better vehicle than the Malibu as it provides more modern features, exterior and interior. And to be precise the Legacy more or less completely overwhelms the Malibu with all that it provides. So in short, if you’re choosing one car between these two, then going for the Subaru Legacy will be a wiser choice as it provides all the features that the Malibu provides but in a more modern way.

Final Verdict
8.5/10

So whether you should go for Malibu or not, at first depend upon your personal preferences and budget. However, if you have the budget to buy the Malibu and are looking to buy a midsize sedan that delivers a good performance, also comes with many features, and is fuel efficient then there are many other options available in the market that are much better than this Chevy car. Although Chevrolet has been updating the features and functions of the vehicle over the year, they cannot hide the outdated aspects of this vehicle that ranks this vehicle quite low in its segment. If you really want to buy a Chevrolet sedan then we would suggest you wait for a year as the Malibu will likely enter its 10th generation with the 2025 model. And if there’s no time to wait then go for another vehicle that provides more for almost a similar price.
