Overview

With a starting price of $23,400, the 2022 Chevrolet Malibu continues to hustle in the midsize family sedan segment. Compared to the previous model year, Chevrolet has eliminated the base L trim, added electronic brake as standard and two new additional exterior colors, Dark Ash and Mineral Gray are now available. The Malibu is an ideal sedan in many aspects but the rivals are simply much better in terms of specifications, making it lose its charm. The exterior features are pretty decent but the interior is somewhat dated. Powered by turbocharged 1.5-liter inline-four and 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo engines, the outputs stand at 163 hp and 250 hp respectively.

2022 Chevrolet Malibu Buying Advice

The 2022 Chevrolet Malibu received a minor visual update in 2019 and since then have not received any major styling updates. However, Chevrolet kept adding multiple specs and features to keep the Malibu fresh in the crowded and highly competitive midsize sedan segment. Chevrolet eliminated the base L trim for the 2022 model year, so the pricing has gone up but the LS trim is now the base model with a good list of features. Some safety features are standard but most of them are optional. The previous model years had their own issues and multiple complaints but the Chevy Malibu 2022 enjoys zero recall and just one complaint related to the electrical system. So, the 2022 model year would be recommended.

The 2022 Chevrolet Malibu is now offered in four trim configurations only. The trims are LS, RS, LT and Premier. The 1.5-liter and 2.0-liter engine options are decent but not enough to dethrone some of the capable competition. The power outputs are limited to 163 and 250 horsepower respectively. Both the powertrains are mated to a FWD drivetrain and AWD is not offered even as an option. The Malibu 2022 challenges the likes of Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, and Hyundai Sonata.

2022 Chevrolet Malibu for sale

The 2022 Chevrolet Malibu is a pretty affordable midsize family sedan that aims to offer decent fuel economy, desirable trim configurations and practicality. Chevrolet offers some good finance and lease offers. Considering the base LS trim, an APR of 3.39% is on the lower side. The finance term of 72 months with monthly payments of $375 is a good deal. The same model can be leased for a term of 36 months with monthly payments of $402 and a mileage limit of 10,000 miles per year. Buyers can also customize their rate of APR, term duration and mileage limit as per their requirements. You can also check out used Malibu models and find an attractive deal.

Buying Advice

We would recommend the Premier trim if you are planning to buy it for a long term. The Premier trim is the only trim with a more powerful engine and a more potent drivetrain as well. It also gives you access to modern features like LED headlamps, 17-inch alloy wheels, power-adjustable and climate-controlled front seats, acoustic limited windshield, heated steering wheel, memory settings, panoramic sunroof, etc. However, you’ll need to opt for the Enhanced Driver Confidence Package for adding advanced and active safety features.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

“The 2022 Chevrolet Malibu is an acceptable choice, but it’s a shame that this may be how Detroit closes its long chapter on mid-size sedans.”- The Car Connection

The 2022 Chevy Malibu is a mid-size sedan and can accommodate five passengers. However, for adequate comfort the seating should be limited for up to four passengers. The base engine is tuned for fuel economy and feels underpowered when compared with more established rivals. The consumer reviews have been quite positive and the Malibu has scored an overall 80 out of 100 in the J.D. Power Consumer Rating. A quality and reliability score of 84 out of 100 can be considered as “Great” and reminds us of its zero recalls till date and just one complaint.

Chevrolet’s midsize sedan can be considered as pocket-friendly as well in terms of its pricing and “Cost-To-Own”. Considering a five-year ownership period, the Chevy Malibu LS is estimated to cost you $9,690 in depreciation and $9,711 in fuel charges. The maintenance, insurance and repair charges are estimated to be $3,600, $4,472 and $820 respectively. Obviously, as you climb the trim ladder, the “Cost-to-Own” will be different and increase considerably. However, the 2023 model year will be last for Chevy's midsize sedan and it will be replaced by some another EV car.

Buying Advice
8.0/10

We would recommend the Premier trim if you are planning to buy it for a long term. The Premier trim is the only trim with a more powerful engine and a more potent drivetrain as well. It also gives you access to modern features like LED headlamps, 17-inch alloy wheels, power-adjustable and climate-controlled front seats, acoustic limited windshield, heated steering wheel, memory settings, panoramic sunroof, etc. However, you’ll need to opt for the Enhanced Driver Confidence Package for adding advanced and active safety features.

Features
5.0/10

The 2022 Chevy Malibu midsize sedan is available in four trim levels: LS, RS, LT, and Premier. Powering the Malibu trims is a turbocharged 160 hp four-cylinder that is paired to a continuously variable automatic transmission. The range-topping Premier trim comes with a larger turbocharged four-cylinder engine, churning out 250 horsepower. All trim levels come with a front-wheel-drive configuration and AWD is not available even as an option. The RS trim appears more sporty from the outside but mechanically remains the same.

The base LS trim offers multiple features like automatic on/off headlights, power-adjustable exterior ORVMs, cruise control, 8-inch touchscreen display with Chevrolet Infotainment 3 system, keyless open and start, and rear seat reminder notification feature. Moving up the RS trim, the mechanical components remain the same but exterior elements like emblems, grille, mirror and spoiler receive black treatment and RS badging for a sportier appearance The RS trim also offers 8-way power adjustable driver’s seat with power lumbar support, 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels and Jet Black Premium Cloth upholstery.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

The 2022 Chevrolet Malibu offers a decent gas mileage for its segment. With its 1.5-liter engine, it is rated at 29 mpg in the city, 36 mpg on the highways, and 32 mpg in mixed driving conditions. The bigger 2.0-liter engine in the Premier trim is rated at 22 mpg, 33 mpg, and 26 mpg, in the city, on the highways, and in combined conditions respectively. With a fuel tank of 15.8 gallons and the base 1.5-liter four-pot motor, it can offer a staggering 506 miles of range in combined driving conditions. The Premier trim with a 2.0-liter engine can offer 411 miles of combined driving range.

All the midsize sedans are pretty neck-to-neck when you compare their EPA-estimated gas mileage. The Honda Accord just emerges the winner thanks to its above-average city and combined miles per gallon. However, the Chevrolet Malibu offers the best city range and combined range in its class, thanks to its larger fuel tank than the Honda Accord. The Toyota Camry is the best bet for long-distance journeys with its class-leading highway mileage and superior range.

Interior
7.0/10

“This is where the 2022 Malibu shows its 2016 roots. It’s nice enough, with a smattering of soft-touch plastics in perceptible places.”- KBB.com

The 2022 Chevrolet Malibu can accommodate up to five passengers and carry forward the same sweeping interior design. The dashboard sports symmetric look, with the infotainment display separating both the dash and the glovebox. The infotainment touchscreen sits comfortably in the middle of the dash, integrated within the center console and flanked by two large air vents. The cabin is very driver-centric thanks to the easy-to-use large knobs and buttons for the HVAC and infotainment controls. The front seats are wide and supportive, although the narrow back cushions may be an issue for some passengers. The outside visibility is good and passengers can enjoy their journeys.

The LS trim can be had with Jet Black or Medium Ash Gray premium cloth upholstery. The RS trim comes with only Jet Black premium cloth upholstery. The LT trim offers same options like LS trim and adds Jet Black and White Wheat leather upholstery. The Premier trim gets Jet Black and White Wheat perforated leather upholstery. The back seats are also spacious enough for most adults, with enough legroom to stretch a leg out. Some convenience features like keyless open and start, tilt and telescopic steering wheel, steering mounted controls and power windows are standard. Other features like power-adjustable front seats, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear outboard seating positions, dual-zone climate control system, and sunroof are offered on the LT and Premier trims.

The trunk is also a commodious haven, with 15.7 cubic feet of space to fit in all your luggage. Even the interior space is also very commodious, although it isn’t one of the best in its class. The RS, LT and Premier trims come with rear armrest with cup holders. The LT and Premier trims get access to rear console vents. All the trims get access to cargo anchors in the trunk, while the trunk mat is offered in Premier trim only. Even the door trim pads and front center console offers cubbies for storage of articles. Overall, the interior dimensions are decent for a car of its size and many won't have any issues with it.

The Chevy Malibu possesses one of the best interior dimensions in its segment, thanks to its spacious headroom and legroom. However, it loses out to the Honda Accord in terms of front and rear legroom. The Hyundai Sonata lacks adequate rear seat legroom. The Accord also has the most spacious trunk in its segment, making it the best choice for families. It is followed by the Hyundai Sonata, Chevrolet Malibu and Toyota Camry.

The 2022 Chevrolet Malibu’s infotainment system is powered by the Chevrolet Infotainment 3 interface while the Premier trim gets the Plus version of it. The 8-inch touchscreen remains the standard entertainment hub and is integrated with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and Bluetooth connectivity. The SiriusXM satellite radio with 3-month complimentary subscription, is offered with the LT and Premier trims. A USB port aids connectivity while a 6-speaker sound system plays all your favorite tunes for you. A 9-speaker Bose premium audio system is also available as an option to play all your songs in high quality.

Some of the key interior features of the 2022 Malibu are:

  • Dual-zone climate control system ( LT and above)
  • Keyless open and start
  • Power-adjustable front seats (Premier)
  • Heated and ventilated front seats. (Premier)
  • Panoramic sunroof (Premier)
  • 8-inch infotainment screen

Exterior
6.0/10

“One piece of good news about the Chevy Malibu is that it definitely has visual appeal. “- KBB.com

The Chevrolet Malibu went through an exterior styling update way back in 2019. The 2022 Chevy Malibu gets the same sleek headlamps and visually appealing front chrome grille with a horizontal bow-tie emblem on it. The fog lamps in the front bumper are attractive and unique. The front bumper merges well with the front fascia design. The sleek front fascia without much drama lends it an appealing and executive sedan appearance.  The Chevrolet bowtie emblem is offered in black with the RS trim. The RS trim also features many blacked-out exterior elements and RS badging for a more sportier styling.

The side profile is like any other mid-size sedan but looks more snazzy, thanks to two character lines on the door trying to blend into each other. The wheel sizes vary from 16-inch to 19-inch and offer a youthful design. The rear profile looks good as well with two well-designed minimalistic tail lamps and available two trapezoidal exhaust tips look sporty to say the least. Chevrolet offers different exterior colors like White, Ice Metallic, Dark Ash, Mineral Gray, Cherry Red Tintcoat, Blue Metallic and Black Metallic. However, the color options will depend on the trim configuration.

The Toyota Corolla is the heaviest of all followed by the Honda Accord, Chevrolet Malibu, and Hyundai Sonata. The Malibu is taller and offers the least ground clearance in comparison. The Honda Accord is the longest and widest while the Hyundai Sonata sits on a longer wheelbase. The Malibu is lighter and sits on a shorter wheelbase as compared to some rivals. A longer wheelbase helps with stability, while a shorter wheelbase helps with maneuverability.

Some of the Key exterior features of the 2022 Malibu are:

  • Capless fuelling
  • Solar absorbing windshield glass and side glass
  • Rear spoiler (RS)
  • LED headlights with auto on/off and delay (Premier)
  • Acoustic laminated windshield

Safety
8.2/10

The 2022 Chevrolet Malibu is the same as the 2021 model. The 2021 Chevrolet Malibu managed a 4-star safety rating in the federal crash tests arranged by NHTSA. In the IIHS safety tests, the midsize sedan received a ‘Good’ rating in different crash worthiness tests, proving its mettle in the safety department.

However, the sedan missed out on the IIHS Top Safety Pick award because of its ‘Marginal’ ratings in the small overlap front passenger-side test and the LATCH tests. As standard safety tech, the 2021 Malibu only got a rearview camera as standard. Some of its rivals offer better safety features as standard.

Some of the key safety features of the 2022 Malibu are:

  • Rear Vision Camera
  • Teen Driver technology
  • Forward-collision warning w/ Automatic emergency braking (Optional)
  • Lane departure warning (Optional)
  • Lane-keep assist w/ Pedestrian Detection (Optional)
  • Adaptive cruise control (Optional)
  • Blind-spot monitoring w/ Rear cross-traffic alert (Optional)

Competition
8.0/10

2022 Chevrolet Malibu vs 2021 Toyota Camry

The Toyota Camry is one of the best sedans on the market, built on Toyota’s solid reliability reputation and vast global customer network. The Camry is faster on the trot than the Malibu and has a more powerful base engine as well.

The Malibu’s only saving grace is its interior dimensions and cargo space. The Malibu is also offered at a lower base price, but we would still prefer the reliability of a Toyota Camry any time of the day.

2022 Chevrolet Malibu vs 2021 Honda Accord

The Honda Accord is a better bet than the Chevy Malibu if you consider outright acceleration and performance. The Accord also has the edge over Malibu with its outstanding fuel economy and interior space.

However, Malibu offers almost similar fuel economy figures at a lower price than the Accord, making it the more affordable option. But if you are willing to splurge, the Accord is the more well-rounded option.

2022 Chevrolet Malibu vs 2021 Hyundai Sonata

The Hyundai Sonata is quite a dark horse in the mid-size sedan segment, with its array of 3 engine options and cutting-edge technology. Malibu’s roomy interior dimensions just edge out the Sonata.

Both the sedans are neck-to-neck in terms of fuel economy. The Malibu and the Sonata both are gifted with an intuitive tech suite. Overall, we think the Malibu edges out the Sonata, thanks to its lower base price.

Final Verdict
8.0/10

The new Honda Accord and Toyota Camry will see a multitude of changes with respect to features and design. The 2022 Malibu can’t keep up with the latest trends. Nevertheless, the 2022 Chevy Malibu expects to end things on a high note with its handsome styling and a handful of feel-good features. There are a lot of decent traits that you can look forward to, like its impressive engine efficiency, roomy interiors, and good cargo capacity.  With the 2023 model year, Chevrolet will bid goodbye to its midsize family sedan and it will be replaced by some other all-electric alternative.
