Overview

The 2020 Chevrolet Malibu remains unchanged as compared to the previous model year. With a starting price of $22,140, Chevy's midsize sedan continues to be offered in L, LS, RS, LT and Premier trims. Chevrolet has added Black Cherry and Stone Gray colors, while Pacific Blue, Sandy Ridge and Iridescent Pearl are no longer available. Even the hybrid trim is discontinued for the 2020 model year. Powered by a 1.5-liter and 2.0-liter inline-four turbo engines, the power output stands at 160 and 250 horsepower respectively. With affordable pricing, practical interior, decent trunk space and sleek exterior, the Malibu continues to compete in the crowded sedan segment.

2020 Chevrolet Malibu Buying Advice

The 2020 Chevrolet Malibu feels lost out in the competitive sedan market. With the dominance of SUVs in the current market trends, Chevrolet has failed to offer something out of the league to make the Malibu stand out. Chevrolet will discontinue the Malibu sedan after the 2023 model year and if you are willing to buy one then you must hurry up. However, we must say that despite good safety ratings, most of the driver-assistance features are optional and some of its rivals do offer them as standard. We would recommend the 2019 and above model years for buying as they had fewer recalls and problems as compared to other model years.

The 2020 Chevrolet Malibu is somehow surviving in the competitive market when most of the automakers are willing to pull the plug on sedans. Chevrolet’s midsize sedan offers decent gas mileage, practicality and styling. Still, we feel that Chevrolet could have paid more attention and made this sedan much better. With capable rivals like Honda Accord, Kia Optima and Ford Fusion, the Malibu would feel the heat of the competition. Let’s find out more about it in our detailed review.

2020 Chevrolet Malibu for sale

The 2020 Chevy Malibu is offered in five different trim configurations that are well-suited to different segments of buyers. The different trim levels offer multiple features, good specifications, different exterior styling and two powertrains, reaching a wider audience spectrum. The 2020 Malibu L can be leased for a term of 42 months and $519 per month. About $4,000 is due at signing and the annual mileage is limited to 10,000 miles. Going for a used 2020 Malibu sedan can be a good idea, if you can find one for sale in good condition and at the right price. The final pricing will depend on the odometer mileage and service history.

Buying Advice

Considering various specifications and features, we would recommend the LT trim. The LT trim offers multiple features like LED daytime running lamps, LED tail lamps, heated and power-adjustable outside mirrors, dual-zone climate control system, and remote vehicle starter system over the standard features of the lower trims. Starting at an msrp of $26,670, the LT might be priced on the higher side but offers desirable features. The RS trim can be a good option too, for those looking for a more sportier and affordable trim. The Malibu RS will cost $24,270 without the destination fee.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2020 Chevrolet Malibu is the only midsize sedan from Chevrolet and it can accommodate up to five passengers. The L, LS, RS and LT trims are equipped with a subtler 1.5-liter inline-four engine, while the more powerful 2.0-liter inline-four engine is reserved for the top-tier Premier trim. All the trims get FWD as standard and AWD is not available even as an option. With just 1 recall and 37 complaints, the Malibu can be a satisfactory family sedan. Even in the J.D. Power Consumer Rating, Chevy’s sedan scored 83 out of 100 which can be termed as “Great”.

The quality and reliability score stands at 89 out of 100 which is spectacular, while the driving experience score of 79 out of 100, points at an “Average” handling. The five year “Cost-to-Own” is calculated on multiple factors and the depreciation accounts to $12,743 after a period of five years. The fuel, maintenance and repair charges are estimated to be $9,387, $4,960 and $1,022 respectively. The cost of ownership is calculated for the base L model. As you climb the trim ladder, the cost of ownership will also be more over a term of five years.

Buying Advice
8.0/10

Considering various specifications and features, we would recommend the LT trim. The LT trim offers multiple features like LED daytime running lamps, LED tail lamps, heated and power-adjustable outside mirrors, dual-zone climate control system, and remote vehicle starter system over the standard features of the lower trims. Starting at an msrp of $26,670, the LT might be priced on the higher side but offers desirable features. The RS trim can be a good option too, for those looking for a more sportier and affordable trim. The Malibu RS will cost $24,270 without the destination fee.

Features

"A modern mid-size sedan that meets the needs of modern families." - Car and Driver

The 2020 Chevy Malibu is offered in L, LS, RS, LT and Premier. With a starting msrp of $22,140, $23,270, $24,270, $26,670 and $33,370 respectively, the trim levels are well priced and specced. However, the more powerful powertrain is offered in the top-tier Premier trim only. Chevrolet should have at least offered it as an optional feature in other trims as well. Sadly, that’s not the case and even the advanced driver-assistance features are not standard. If you were seeking an AWD sedan then you must look somewhere else as FWD is the only drivetrain.

The base L trim is pretty basic and must be avoided in our opinion. The LS trim adds features like teen driver technology, active noise cancellation, digital compass, and outside temperature display. The rest of the features remain the same as the L trim. The RS trim adds blacked-out appearance with black grille inserts and black bowtie emblems. The rear spoiler, dual exhaust outlets and RS badging enhances the exterior styling. The LT trim adds dual-zone climate control, remote vehicle starter system, power-adjustable seats with power lumbar control, rear console vents and LED taillamps.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

"In terms of EPA fuel-mileage estimates, the Malibu's smallest engine underperforms the equivalent base powertrains in the Accord and the Toyota Camry. " - Car and Driver

The 2020 Chevrolet Malibu offers decent gas mileage but is not the best in the segment. With a 1.5-liter turbo engine, buyers can expect an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 29/36/32 mpg in city/highway/combined driving conditions. Similarly, the Premier trim with a 2.0-liter engine is EPA-estimated to deliver 22/32/26 mpg in the city/highway/combined driving conditions. With a fuel tank capacity of 15.8 gallons, the Malibu offers a combined driving range of 506 miles and 411 miles with the smaller and bigger engines respectively.

The Honda Accord is the most fuel efficient sedan in the comparison. It is followed by Chevrolet Malibu, Kia Optima and Ford Fusion. Despite a lower gas mileage, the Kia Optima offers comparable range, courtesy of a larger fuel tank.  The Ford Fusion is the least fuel efficient and it offers the least driving range as well. The best driving range is offered by Malibu, thanks to a decent fuel economy and moderately-sized fuel tank.

Interior
7.0/10

Front-seat passengers have comfortable thrones that offer a good view out. Most 2019 Malibus on dealer lots have an 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, but a 6-way manual seat is standard. - car and driver

The interior of the 2020 Chevy Malibu is not as pleasing as its exterior design. Functionally, the cabin is well laid and can be termed as ergonomic The materials in the cabin are soft and premium to touch, while road and engine noise are effectively muted out. The infotainment touchscreen is placed in the middle of the dashboard, integrated within the center console and flanked by two large air vents. We hope that the plasticky bits reduce in the future iterations for a more upmarket feel.

The front seats offer decent support but the images don’t do justice to the seating space. The rear seats are spacious too and offer adequate legroom for passengers. The L trim gets Medium Ash Gray Premium Cloth upholstery. The LS trim gets an additional choice for Jet Black Premium Cloth upholstery. The RS trim gets only the Jet Black Premium Cloth upholstery. The LT trim gets the same interior color options as the LS trim, adding Light Wheat and Jet Black Leather upholstery. The Premier trim gets only Light Wheat and Jet Black Perforated Leather upholstery.

Chevy’s midsize sedan offers 15.7 cubic feet of trunk space and many creature comforts like keyless open and start, tilt and telescopic steering wheel, steering mounted controls and power windows. Other features like power-adjustable front seats, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear outboard seating positions, dual-zone climate control system, and sunroof are offered on the LT and Premier trims. The RS and above trims come with rear armrest with cup holders. The LT and Premier trims offer rear console vents as well. However, the sunroof is offered with Premier trim only. All the trims get access to cargo anchors in the trunk. Even the door trim pads, front center console and map pockets offer storage space.

The Honda Accord offers the best cargo space and rear seat legroom as well. The Ford Fusion follows the Accord very closely. The Kia Optima offers slightly better trunk space than the Chevrolet Malibu. However, better second row legroom is available in the Malibu. The best shoulder room is available in the Malibu, ensuring better comfort for the rear seat passengers. In terms of practicality and comfort, the Accord would be the best pick in the comparison.

The infotainment system can be considered as one of the USPs of the 2020 Malibu. An 8.0-inch infotainment screen is standard across all the trims and runs on Chevrolet’s Infotainment 3 system. Some connectivity options like Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. Even a 6-speaker audio system is standard. The LT trim adds SiriusXM radio, while the features like HD touchscreen, navigation system, 9-speaker Bose audio system, and 8-inch driver information display are offered with the Premier trim.

Some of the key interior and infotainment features are:

  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Power tilt/sliding sunroof
  • 8-way power-adjustable driver's seat with lumbar support
  • 6-way power-adjustable front passenger seat
  • Heated and ventilated front seats
  • Heated rear outboard seats
  • 8.0-inch touchscreen display
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • 9-speaker Bose premium audio system

Exterior
6.0/10

"Malibu casts an upscale shadow thanks to its long roofline and three side windows. Its sides are voluptuous, but not excessively so. Up front, an extra-wide grille is flanked by narrow strips of headlights. Chrome detailing ties it all together nicely." - Edmunds

The Malibu was redesigned for the 2019 model year and continues with a large new grille up front, which redefines the aura from a tame city cruiser to an edgy modern sedan. The large grill, however, throws a bold statement onto the spectators with a massive blackened grille that is split in two. The sharp geometrical LED daytime running lights give the sedan a futuristic flair. There are a few curvy lines along the sides of the vehicle that add more character to the vehicle. The long sloping roofline makes the rear visually stunning and the chrome styling accents the fascia perfectly.

The rear sums up the look with a flattened trunk and a small lip spoiler adding more to the sportiness factor. Some other exterior features like RS badging with Black grille inserts, Black bowtie emblems and Black Malibu badges, dual exhaust outlets with polished tips and rear spoiler are offered with the RS trim only. From LT trim onwards, LED tail lamps are standard, while the PRemier trim offers LED headlights as standard. Different exterior colors like Summit White, Ice Metallic, Dark Ash, Mineral Gray, Cherry Red Tintcoat, Black Cherry Metallic, Northsky Blue Metallic and Mosaic Black Metallic.are offered.

The exterior dimensions of the Malibu are perfect to maneuver around city blocks and tight parking lots. Although the Chevy is a bit longer than most, it’s also a bit narrower and weighs less than most of the cars in this segment. The Ford Fusion has a much higher curb weight and a longer wheelbase. It is also taller than the rest of the sedans in the comparison. The major disadvantage with most sedans is a lower ground clearance than other segments. However, a lower clearance helps with lower center of gravity and better handling.

Some of the key exterior features of the 2020 Malibu are:

  • Halogen projector-beam headlamps
  • LED DRLs and taillamps (LT and Premier)
  • Body-colored antenna
  • 18-inch aluminum wheels
  • Exterior heated, power-adjustable, body-colored mirrors
  • Dual-outlet exhaust with polished tips (RS trim)
  • Chrome door handles with body-color inserts
  • Bright sill plates

Safety
4.0/10

" Although the Chevy sedan can be had with all the high-tech assists that help protect modern families, these options are unavailable on some models." - Car and Driver

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration rates the 2020 Chevrolet Malibu with an overall safety rating of 4 out of 5 stars. It scores the same in the side crash safety test and roll-over safety test. In the aspect of the frontal crash, it gets a perfect 5 water 5-star rating. We further go ahead to check the safety grade that the 2020 Chevrolet Malibu gets from IIHS, it scores a good grade in almost all the aspects except for Small Overlap Front: Passenger Side and Latch: ease of use.

In these two aspects, it scores only a marginal grade. It packs multiple passive safety features like airbags, teen driver technology, rear vision camera, buckle-to-drive and LATCH system, while offering several active safety features like the forward collision warning, automated emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control. However, most of these features are not offered as standard and are a part of Driver Confidence Packages.

Some of the key safety features of the 2020 Chevrolet Malibu are:

  • StabiliTrak, stability control system with brake assist
  • Braking control, ECM grade
  • Daytime Running Lamps, integral to headlamps
  • Airbags, 10 total, frontal and knee for driver and front...
  • OnStar and Chevrolet connected services capable (Fleet orders...

2020 Chevrolet Malibu vs 2020 Honda Accord

The Honda Accord has long been revered as the class leader of the mid-size sedan segment. It has the perfect blend of performance, economy, utility and technology. Compared to the Malibu, the Honda not only has a brawnier engine, the driving dynamics are also much more refined.

The interiors focus on function rather than fancy in both of these sedans. From the outside, the design are equally impressive and completely subjective. Overall, the Honda sits a notch higher than the Chevy in the segment.

2020 Chevrolet Malibu vs 2020 Kia Optima

The 2020 Kia Optima comes with the same engine as the Hyundai Sonata; the 2.4L inline-4, which makes 185 hp, while the 1.4L engine on the Malibu manages to make 160. The smaller displacement also means that the Chevy gives you better fuel economy.

On the inside, the Optima uses space optimally to keep the rear roomy for taller passengers, while the middle seat in the Malibu gets cramped. The front grille of the Optima resembles the iconic Stinger GT, while some would find a resemblance to the Camaro in Malibu’s new front grille.

2020 Chevrolet Malibu vs 2020 Ford Fusion

The Ford has fused the Fusion sedan with a mix of comfort and practicality, but the engine lacks the punch you’d expect considering it comes with a 2.4L engine. Even in terms of fuel economy, the Malibu has better mileage.

The Sync3 optional infotainment in the Ford Fusion is the best in class available, compared to the one on the Chevy, it’s far better. Malibu’s design is much edgier compared to the Fusion which feels tamed and dated.

Final Verdict
8.0/10

The Malibu is a fun and reliable sedan from Chevrolet, it has refined handling and performance and the styling has been revised to fit in 2019. Both the engine configurations make good power and are responsive to the throttle, especially the 250 hp 2.0L turbo engine. The interiors and the infotainment are fundamental and functional, with no fancy bells and whistles. The Chevrolet Malibu may not be the best in the segment, but it’s a good option for those who don’t want to buy any run-of-the-mill sedan.
