Overview

The 2020 Chevrolet Camaro coupe is available for sale at a base price tag of $25,000. It comes in 1LS, 1LT, 2LT, and 3LT in its base form. A 275-hp 2.0L turbo-4 engine is standard but a 335-hp 3.0L V6 engine is also available. New for this year is an optional 10-speed automatic transmission for the V6. Only RWD configuration is available. Even the base engine is punchy enough to accelerate from 0-60 MPH in about 5.4 seconds.

The interior of the Camaro looks modern for a car that harkens back to the 1960s. Its infotainment system is user-friendly and packs some of the latest features. On the safety front, the Camaro received great ratings and comes with a decent list of safety features. Also, the Camaro has topped the reliability ratings in its class. The Camaro was bound to compete with the Dodge Challenger and the Ford Mustang and the tradition continues to this day.

Buying Advice

If you're planning to buy a Chevy Camaro, go for the 2LT trim as it comes with decent infotainment and comfort features. This trim adds leather seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated and ventilated front seats. Also, buy the Technology package as it includes Infotainment 3 Plus infotainment system with an 8-inch touchscreen and navigation system. The package also includes a 9-speaker Bose audio system.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

For the money, the Camaro offers more power and performance than cars costing twice as much- Autotrader

The Chevy Camaro is known for its raw muscle power and street racer demeanor. Both its engines are potent to offer a thrilling driven experience. Inside, the Camaro comes with an intuitive infotainment system and comfortable seats but its cargo room is very little for a sports coupe. The Camaro also earned decent safety ratings and features.

The ownership costs of the Camaro are more than the Challenger but less than the Mustang. Its maintenance and repair costs are similar to the Challenger but its fuel costs and depreciation value are more. Due to this, the true cost to own is close to $7,200 per year. Also, the average cost per mile is $0.48, which is again more than the Challenger.

Features

Thanks to a generally higher level of standard equipment, prices are pretty much on-target with its crosstown rival, the Ford Mustang- Kelly Blue Book

The Chevrolet Camaro is offered in four trim levels which include 1LS, 1LT, 2LT, and 3LT. The entry-level 1LS starts from $25,000, excluding a destination fee of $995. Two engines and transmissions are offered throughout the lineup except for the base 1LS trim. Away from the powertrain option, there is an army of interior and exterior add-ons but personalizing your ride will require a high budget far away from the car’s original price tag.

The sport-themed $1,950 RS package is another option you can have for the LT lineup. It includes several appearance upgrades, xenon headlights, and 20-inch alloy wheels. A 1LE Track Package can be added to the same trims. This package adds a sport-tuned suspension and a high-performance fuel system from the SS model, a dual exhaust system, Brembo brakes, a track cooling package, and 20-inch forged aluminum wheels for $4,500.

Fuel Economy
5.0/10

The Chevy's four-cylinder engine has the highest EPA estimates- CarAndDriver

Muscles cars have an appetite for fuel. You will be a constant at the gas station just to use them as a daily driver. However, the lesser-tamed 2.0L turbo-4 is the opposite of what muscle cars are known for. The EPA-estimated fuel ratings are 20 MPG in the city, 30 MPG on the highway, and 23 MPG combined.

These MPG figures are quite impressive for a pony car. However, its archrivals also have a similar fuel economy but they are way efficient than the Camaro. It comes fitted with a large 19-gallon fuel tank, which translates to high fuel costs. In combined form, the Camaro delivers up to 475 miles thanks to its large fuel tank.

The Ford Mustang has the best efficiency in this competition. Despite having a small tank, it returns 24 MPG combined but suffers from less driving range. Like the Mustang, even the Dodge Challenger's fuel estimates almost match with the Camaro but it is slightly efficient. Those concerned about fuel costs, go for the Mustang.

Interior
6.3/10

The front seats are more comfortable and supportive than before, but the dinky backseats are strictly for small children or contortionists- Edmunds

Inside the retro shell sits a modernized interior. Everything looks good but it doesn't feel that upscale. There are a lot of hard plastic areas but their built is rather strong. The driving position is decent, you get a good look at the road but the gigantic gauge cluster and steering cannot go unnoticed; it impairs with healthy visibility. The front cabin is roomy, the driver and the co-pilot seats have good lateral support. You can enjoy a laid back long ride without breaking a sweat.

An 8-way power driver's seat is standard but higher trims also add a 6-way power passenger's seat and heated and ventilated front seats. The cabin is not that spacious but doesn't feel packed too. It's adequate for a car built for 2 but marketing it for 4 is a comical statement. Things don't play well for the back-seaters. There is no legroom space, it's clear the car was not intended to harbor 4 people full time. You get a lot of options to customize the Camaro, but you need to pay more.

Standard on the Camaro is Chevy's Infotainment 3 system with a 7-inch infotainment screen paired to a 6-speaker stereo. The 3LT trim upgrades to Infotainment 3 Plus system with an 8-inch touchscreen display, navigation system, and a 9-speaker Bose audio system. Regardless of screen size, both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are supported. The interface is intuitive and straightforward. The 3LT trim also adds an 8-inch digital driver's display, satellite radio, and Wi-Fi hotspot.

Practicality is where Camaro hits a rock bottom. The 9 cubic feet of cargo volume is the worst in the class, even the fellow American muscle features a much bigger cargo. The subpar cabin utility limits you from carrying a lot of luggage. However, you can use unrealistic rear seats to do that job for you. The shape of the trunk is somewhat small but its quite deep. The high leftover height can be challenging to load in heavier loads into the trunk. Some other cabin highlights of the Camaro are given below:

  • Tilt & telescopic multi-function leather, heated steering wheel
  • Power front seats with heated & ventilated functions
  • Dual illuminating vanity mirrors
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Aluminum door trim
  • Illuminated scuff plate
  • Cloth & leather upholstery
  • 7 & 8-inch touchscreen display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • 9-speaker Bose audio system

Exterior
9.0/10

Retro cool and menacing, the Chevrolet Camaro announces its sporty intentions with its looks but compromises some function for its form- The Car Connection

The bold lines running all over the fenders and beastly front grille are what make the Chevrolet Camaro an exclusive section. The LED headlight and DRLs design give an aggressive look to the face. The design is true to its 60s American lineage with some tuning signifying Chevy modern styling. Have a good look at the rear end you will find the thin 3D taillight giving it a daunting stance. The funky bumpers are a bit of a surprise but it contributes to the overall look.

The wheel arches house 18-inch alloys as standard but 20-inch alloys is an option. The Camaro looks like Arnold Schwarzenegger in his prime, it has a lot of lean muscle but however, lacks the size. It's actually 10 inches shorter than a full executive, but that's all a muscle needs. On paper, the Camaro is 188.3 inches long and 74.7 inches wide from ear to ear. It's 53.1 inches tall which is true to its muscle car mold while the 110-inch wheelbase is a rather middling characteristic.

The Dodge Challenger has the widest wheelbase that measures 5.5 more than the Camaro. This allows for more rear legroom as well as a stable ride. However, its lengthy body can be a problem while maneuvering at narrow streets or parking spots. The Ford Mustang sits 0.8 inches higher than the Camaro, which is good for a sports coupe. Also, its short wheelbase helps it to burn out extremely fast. Some main noticeable exterior features of the Camaro are:

  • LED headlamps
  • LED DRLs
  • LED taillights
  • Heated exterior mirrors
  • Black grille
  • Black window trim
  • Dual exhaust tips
  • 18 & 20-inch alloy wheels

Safety
8.8/10

Automatic emergency braking is not available in the Camaro- MotorTrend

The Chevrolet Camaro has received decent scores from the NHTSA and IIHS for its performance in crash tests. It received a 5-star rating from NHTSA, which is great. IIHS gave 'Good' ratings in four out of five crash tests. It also gave an 'Acceptable' rating for its headlights and the lowest 'Basic' rating for the front crash prevention.

The lower trims of the Camaro don't come with many active safety features. The 3LT trim upgrades the standard suite of safety features, which prevents any crash to take place at all. Nevertheless, the system does more towards warning the driver of dangerous situations instead of intervening to prevent one. These safety features include:

  • Rearview camera
  • Teen Driver
  • Frontal collision warning
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Rear parking sensors

Competition

2020 Chevrolet Camaro vs 2020 Ford Mustang

Camaro's long-term rival isn't planning on making things easy. The Ford Mustang is a well-rounded car that has got everything right starting from power to practicality. Fuel economy is not something to debate over, both cars are evenly matched. Both cars deliver the same set of features, with one just a tad behind the other. Even the price doesn't impact your choice. The main winning point of the Mustang is its more active safety features. Hence, your choice will largely depend upon the brand you prefer.

2020 Chevrolet Camaro vs 2020 Dodge Challenger

It's 2020 and the Dodge Challenger is still living in the '70s.  However, from the inside, it is a completely different beast. Pitting it with the Camaro, the Challenger is more powerful with its V6 might. However, the boat-like design limits its acceleration. As a family car, the Challenger is more promising as a daily driver. Its long body delivers more cargo and extra legroom for tall people. So, if you have kids and responsibilities and still want to live your teenage dream, the Challenger might be your choice.

Final Verdict
7.6/10

Still boasting its late 70s outline, the 2020 Chevrolet Camaro is still going strong. It's all the muscle an American purist would want. The power will suffice for a daily driver and the decent ergonomic numbers complement that idea. It has its downsides like poor cargo space and jampacked rear seats. Also, the competitors are more potent and their engine creates more aggressive noises, but that doesn't keep the Camaro from tire-smoking acceleration and giving a tough competition. The Camaro is built for drags, making cool noises, and adding a gangsta demeanor to your day-to-day routine. If you can imagine yourself self-doing that, the Camaro is your car.
