Overview

The 2022 Chevrolet Camaro is one of the few muscle cars along with the chief rivals including the Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger. This rear-wheel-drive Camaro is a sports car that brings the traditional muscle car dynamics with updated interior and handling performance. The Chevy and Ford offer two body styles, coupe, and convertible, while the Challenger is only available in coupe form. Among the small set of rivals, the Chevy Camaro is a popular option, thanks to its affordable pricing and superb chassis. The 2022 Camaro is the best coupe from Chevy that attracts the most Flexoffers from a diverse and wide US auto marketplace.

For 2022, the Chevy Camaro is mostly unchanged and impresses with its sleek styling, sporty driving performance, and wide array of trims and configurations. Pricing ranges from $25,000 for the base LS up to $63,000 for the extreme ZL1. The coupe has its own flaws, especially when it comes to interior and cargo space, the Ford and Dodge offer more space.  Check out expert ratings and reviews to learn more

Buying Advice

The exclusion of the 1LE package option from the lineup stands to complicate the buying decision. However, we would recommend opting for the V6 engine trims for sheer brute and power in the performance that the 2022 Chevrolet Camaro displays. Amongst the trim options, the 3LT that bears an expected MSRP of $32,000 will be the best bet in the segment with its abundant feature-load that combines specifications available with the base and mid-level trims and adds advanced driver-assistance features for a holistic riding experience. However, if you aim at glorious acceleration, the V8 engine-equipped trims will be the most suitable option.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

With the 2022 Camaro, Chevrolet has sought to introduce evident changes into the vehicle. These include the options of a new color scheme and the complete exclusion of the 1LE package from the 4-cylinder and V6 engine trims. With other aspects remaining unchanged, the 2022 Chevrolet Camaro will continue to delight buyers with its agility and versatility with three potent engine options on offer and unforgettable ride quality.

Features

The 2022 Chevrolet Camaro like its predecessor is an all-encompassing model that is available in a number of trims and configurations in two body styles: coupe and convertible (reviewed separately). The 2022 Camaro costs $25,000 for the base 1LS trim and goes up to $31,500 for the 3LT trim level. The Camaro LT1 coupe costs $34,000 while the prices of the 1SS and 2SS models begin from $37,500 and $42,500 respectively. Those looking for the extreme Camaro sports car should check out the ZL1 coupe starting from $63k.

As standard, the Camaro comes equipped with features like keyless entry, a comprehensive airbag system, and a rearview camera. This rear-wheel-drive sports car will offer three distinct engine options across the 2022 lineup. However, the top-tier V8 unit will be available with the LT1, SS, and ZL1 trims only.

The 2022 Chevrolet Camaro was slated for release in the third quarter of 2022. However, with delays in production, it is expected that the 2022 Camaro might go into production by late September this year. While it is difficult to ascertain a defined timeline in the presence of such alterations, sources believe that in both coupe and convertible avatar, the Chevrolet Camaro should be available in the market by the last quarter of the year.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

This Chevy muscle car returns a typical fuel economy ratings when compared to cars in its segment. The 2022 Camaro with the base engine gets EPA estimated 19 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. With the automatic transmission, the gas mileage increases to 22/30 mpg. If you are going for the V6, ratings drop to 16/26 mpg city/highway with the manual transmission and 18/29 mpg with the auto.

Associate its frugality with its 19-gallon fuel tank and the 2022 Camaro manages a mixed driving range of 456 miles in a single fuel stop. But fret not, if you are looking for a fuel-efficient Chevrolet Camaro, the electric variant of the vehicle that is in advanced stages of planning, could be your one-stop solution. The Ford Mustang Ecoboost is the most conservative and efficient in the segment averaging a combined mileage of 24 MPG, while the Challenger remains only a notch lower at 23 MPG.

Interior
6.0/10

"Sure, there are a few flaws, but this is a performance car for relatively little money." - Kbb.com

Technically, the Chevy Camaro offers seating for four but it can be best described as a 2+2 layout. Upfront, you will have sufficient space for adults and the rear seats are undersized, even for the sports car class. Also, the outward visibility is limited in all directions. You won't confuse the Chevy Camaro for a luxury sports car as Camaro's interior has some low-rent plastic. Though the cabin ergonomics are driver-centric, steering-mounted controls are the first hint of an accessible setup, while the placement of infotainment knobs and controls enhances the easy-going nature inside.

What looks good inside the Camaro is leather padding and the monochrome color tone that give it a sophisticated yet athletic look. While there are two upholstery options on offer, the front seats are a comfortable and luxurious place to be in. The low-lying front seats do grant a sportscar-like aura, however, when equated with the heightened dashboard they do have a bearing on the visibility outside.

The interior small storage options are limited. Chevy offers less trunk space in the Camaro as compared to the rivals including Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger. the Camaro Coupe provides 9.1 cubic feet of cargo space. When compared to the competition, the 2022 Dodge Challenger is the only car in the segment that can seat five passengers. While space upfront is best in the Ford Mustang, the declined headroom due to receding rooflines and constrained legroom for rear-seat passengers is a commonality in the market.

Some of the salient interior features of the 2022 Chevrolet Camaro include:

  • Cloth/ Leather Upholstery
  • Driver and Passenger Seats with power adjustability
  • Leather Wrapped Steering Wheel
  • Adjustable Steering Wheel
  • Cruise Control
  • Dual-zone Climate Control (available on 2LT and above)

How intuitive is the infotainment system of the 2022 Chevrolet Camaro?

The Chevrolet's Infotainment 3 system which comes as standard across the 2022 Camaro lineup is easy to use and its intuitiveness is where its affability lies. There is no steep learning curve to understand its dynamics and even from the base variant, it feels heavily equipped. Though the base 7-inch touch screen feels small as per modern standards, it offers crisp graphics. The most enticing part is the standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. the available eight-inch central screen comes with a satellite radio, a nine-speaker Bose stereo, navigation, and wireless device charging. Some other infotainment system features include:

  • USB Connection
  • Bluetooth Connectivity
  • 6-speaker sound system (on 1LS, 1LT, and 2LT trims)
  • 9-speaker Bose Premium Sound System (3LT trim onwards)
  • Satellite Radio

Exterior

"Wrapped in a cool pony car body, the 2021 Chevy Camaro has sports car moves." -TheCarConnection.com

The 2022 Chevrolet Camaro borrows its designing cues from the outgoing model and continues to be built to one’s liking and has an irresistible appeal to it. The chiseled and sculpted hood has an athletic look to it and the slim head- and tail lights fit neatly into the overall exterior design. The front grille houses the brand logo and the gracious curves and lines that run throughout the entire body are dealt with gracefully.

From every angle, the 2022 Chevrolet Camaro looks aerodynamic and refreshing. With no changes in its dimensions, the Chevrolet continues to garner a solid road presence. It is 188.3 inches long with a wheelbase that extends to 110.7 inches. However, it sports the lowest clearance of 4.0 inches, which does give it a rugged look, but it also means that the driver will at all times have to remain cautious of untoward surfaces.

The 2022 Dodge Challenger is the largest vehicle in the segment. It is the heaviest weighing 3,858 lbs. It is also the longest, widest, and tallest in the segment measuring 197.9, 75.7, and 57.7 inches, respectively. It stands at a wheelbase of 116.2 inches, however, features lower ground clearance. On the other hand, the 2021 Ford Mustang is the lightest coupe at 3,705 lbs and it sports the highest clearance from the ground at 5.4 inches.

In terms of design, however, all three cars carry the robustness you would expect from a true-blue muscle car. While the 2021 Ford Mustang and 2022 Chevrolet Camaro have the modernity and a new-fangled design, the 2022 Dodge Challenger could use a mid-life update on its design and if sources are to be believed, we might see a refreshed fascia on the Challenger for the MY 2023.

Some of the exterior features of the 2022 Chevrolet Camaro include:

  • Camaro Logo Package
  • Rear Spoiler
  • Sunroof
  • Optional Black Exhaust Tips
  • 1LE package (available with the LT1 and higher trims)
  • Ground Effects Package

Safety
8.8/10

The NHTSA gave the 2022 Chevrolet Camaro an overall safety rating of five out of five stars, while the IIHS has not yet crash tested the 2022 Camaro. since the sports coupe is unchanged this year, we expect it to fetch similar safety ratings as the 2021 Camaro for crashworthiness. In IIHS testing, the coupe received the highest rating of “Good” in all crash tests except for the roof strength for which it earned “Acceptable.”

Other salient Safety specifications include:

  • Lane Keeping Assist
  • Blind-spot Monitor
  • Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Front Collision Warning
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System
  • OnStar and Chevrolet Emergency Connect SOS

2022 Chevrolet Camaro vs 2022 Dodge Challenger

The Dodge Challenger is a long-standing competitor in the muscle car segment and the 2022 MY carries the legacy forward gracefully. It is one of the most viable competitors in the segment and perhaps, one of the few vehicles that use a standard V6 engine. However, its longer dimensions and heavier curb weight restrict its acceleration causing it to be a tad bit slower than its competitors.

However, it is marginally more efficient than the 2022 Chevrolet Camaro. Additionally, it also features higher space on the inside, an additional seat, and best-in-class cargo capacity. The only downside we see is its old-fangled design and if you are someone who can compromise marginally on design for practicality, the 2022 Dodge Challenger will make for a viable proposition. However, if you want a little of something, the Chevrolet Camaro is the better option.

2022 Chevrolet Camaro vs 2021 Ford Mustang

The Ford Mustang arguably pioneered the trend of muscle cars into the segment and well, as a flag-bearer it has set the bar pretty high. Its uniqueness lies in the number of trims, configurations, and engine options it provides to the buyers. It is the most powerful in the segment in terms of power and torque output and is only diminutively slower than the segment-leading 2022 Chevrolet Camaro.

It is the most efficient vehicle in the segment, but it manages the lowest range in the segment due to its smaller fuel capacity. Both coupes can seat similar passengers and have almost equal space. The 2022 Ford Mustang, however, leads in cargo capacity and space for rear-seat occupants. The warranty policy and maintenance costs are almost indistinguishable and it is difficult to declare a certain winner. Thus, amongst the two, which vehicle to choose will depend on the buyer’s pocket size, appetite for features, and eventually, the exterior design.

Final Verdict

The 2022 Chevrolet Camaro is in all ways an embodiment of the brand and the segment that it falls in. Its build quality, design, and performance are all suggestive of Chevrolet’s knack for producing consumer-friendly and affordable vehicles that deliver exceptionally. By being one of the few muscle cars on offer, the Camaro has managed to etch its name in the “hall of fame” by being a stiff competitor that drives smoothly and safely.

While the standard specifications are enough to satiate all your needs, the brand offers a number of package options to spoil yourself further. While it does face intense heat from its contemporaries, by managing powerful performance, impressive fuel efficiency, and a comprehensive infotainment and safety system, the 2022 Chevrolet Camaro ensures that it provides you the best experience at an affordable price and well, we see no reason to veto it.
