Engine and Performance
9.3/10

The 2023 BMW 2-Series comes with two engine types: the turbocharged 2.0 Inline 4 engine with the 230i variant that makes 255 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft of torque, and the turbocharged 3.0L Inline 6 engine with the M40i variant that generates 382 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. The 230i comes with a standard RWD, while the M40i features standard AWD. The dual-clutch transmission from M cars was dumped by the brand for the excellent ZF-sourced 8-speed automatic transmission with a manual shifting mode. This is a gearbox capable of fading into the background, and smoothly switching cogs..

The 2023 BMW 2-Series offers better power output than the Audi TT and delivers a better torque than both Audi TT and the Dodge Challenger. It is also not the fastest of all as it takes longer than its rivals to reach the speed of 60 MPH. Similarly, the coupe also lags behind all in terms of the quarter mile timing. Amongst the four, the quickest acceleration is provided by the Toyota GR Supra. The 2023 TT has a top speed of 155 MPH which is as per the segment.

2023 BMW 2-Series Ride and Handling

Unlike many larger, more powerful M cars, the 2 Series provides a sense of connection to the driver that reminds us of the old E46 M3, except this car is much quicker. The steering is far better with the coupe and offers an apt response than any other M Performance car. While driving in Sport Plus mode, the steering also gets considerably heavier. The brand has tuned its adaptive suspension to be firm and absorbs the undulations effectively. Despite the fact that the M240i comes with a standard AWD rather than an RWD, the system is geared toward the rear. Furthermore, The 230i variant is a bit less exciting in terms of raw speed, but it is equipped with RWD and comes with nearly 50:50 weight distribution, so it won’t be disappointing the enthusiasts either.

2023 BMW 2-Series Braking Performance

The 2023 BMW 2-Series comes with vented disc brakes on all four of its wheels. The brake pads last about 30,000-70,000 miles depending on the nature of the driving. The size of the brake rotors is yet to be determined. The brake pedal is soft and offers sufficient response to the driver. The tires also aid the braking performance effectively. However, after a few runs, the outcomes start to deteriorate. The car comes with additional braking features such as an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Brake Assist and Hill Hold Control. Moreover, the coupe weighs around 3,519 lbs.

The size of the brake rotors for the 2-Series is not yet known. However, among the three rivals, the biggest brake rotors are offered by the Toyota GR Supra, followed by the Dodge Challenger and the Audi TT. The 2-Series is heavier than the TT and the GR Supra, contributing to its overall momentum while driving. Also, the Challenger, despite its massive weight, covers the least stopping distance while at 60 MPH as compared to the two competitors.

Fuel Economy
8.5/10

For the 230i variant, the 2023 BMW 2-Series offers a fuel economy of 26 MPG in a city, 35 MPG on a highway and 29 MPG combined. 9.3/10

The 2023 BMW 2-Series provides a premium and functional cabin. Incorporated with a minimalistic styling, the coupe comes with separate climate controls, volume knobs, and a power button. The 2-Series is not super spacious but offers practicality as compared to other cars in the segment. A striking contrast between the available colors and black is created with Sensatec synthetic leather, which comes standard on both cars. The 2 Series comes with standard utility features like power-adjustable front seats with a memory function for the driver, dual-zone climate control, two 12-volt sockets, etc.
