Overview

The flagship SUV class has easily astounded the buyers. It does that not just with its exorbitant pricing, but also with the flamboyant status and high comfort levels these SUVs carry. The BMW X7has been a fine representation of the segment.

Since its introduction, the German vehicle has been a formidable force that resounds with paramount luxury, is easy to drive, and offers a wholesome riding experience throughout the cabin. It is safe, sound, and reliable, and despite being a part of the first generation, it remains highly modern.

Buying Advice

The 2023 BMW X7 is available as a standalone option and it is our only recommendation. It offers a tantalizing engine setup and comes equipped with an ostentatious set of features, which easily justify its price tag.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

With 2023 MY, BMW’s ideas with the X7 have not changed much. However, the SUV does benefit from a new M60i trim and redesigned exterior fascia. Additionally, a new infotainment system assumes duty on the inside, while the power outputs from the standard powertrain have been tweaked for improved performance. The X7 SUV price starts at just under $80,000 and keeping in mind the class it falls in, the vehicle receives competition from the likes of the Cadillac Escalade, the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class, and the Infiniti QX80.

Features

The 2023 BMW X7 returns to the market with considerable updates. It comes in one fully-equipped trim that coalesces practical and comfortable features to deliver a comprehensive experience. The SUV is priced at $77,850 and comes with a 3.0L turbocharged inline-6 unit that produces more power than before.

The standard AWD setup maintains its relevance and so do features like adaptive cruise control, contoured front seats, and BMW’s digital key for remote access. As for packages, there are several options to choose from. However, the Premium and Executive Package add most to the overall appeal of the vehicle. Both these packages include features like:

  1. Premium Package @ $1,850
  • Harman Kardon Sound System
  • Soft-close doors
  • Rear Electric Side Window Shades
  1. Executive Package @ $3,950
  • Harman Kardon Sound System
  • Heated and Cooled cupholders
  • Panoramic Sky Lounge LED Roof

We Recommend

The 2023 BMW X7 is available as a standalone option and it is our only recommendation. It offers a tantalizing engine setup and comes equipped with an ostentatious set of features, which easily justify its price tag.

Release Date

The 2023 BMW X7 release date has not yet been confirmed. However, considering that the vehicle has been listed for sale on the website and buyers can place orders, we believe that the SUV should be ready for delivery at dealerships by the end of the third quarter of 2022.

Fuel Economy
7.5/10

The 2023 BMW X7 has not been tested by EPA for its fuel efficiency. However, the brand claims that the SUV can average 25 MPG on the highway, while it comes equipped with a 21.9-gallon fuel tank. As a result, the vehicle manages 547.5 miles when being driven purely on a highway. No other information regarding the fuel efficiency is yet known, however, from the available statistics, it is visible that performance has improved compared to the outgoing model.

In comparison, the 2022 GLS 450 is the closest competitor averaging 20 MPG on the highway. It also manages to secure the highest range in combined driving conditions at 476 miles. However, in the segment, the Cadillac Escalade and Infiniti QX80 have larger tanks that can hold 24 and 26 gallons, respectively. But they fall short of the German competitor by at least 60 miles since the Escalade can average 416 miles only.

Interior
7.5/10

The 2023 BMW X7 interior easily justifies the price tag it carries. In every aspect, the cabin resounds with comfort and reeks of luxury. Starting with the seats, the SUV sports powered and heated front seats with lumbar support. Each seat is covered in Sensafin upholstery, which is both feel-good and adds to the aesthetic appeal of the setup. An anthracite headliner and gloss wood trim on the doors and dash also add plushness to the vehicle.

As for space, the BMW X7 falls short of hitting the mark. Though the space is ample and comfort is top-notch, the SUV’s direct competitors manage to be more passenger-friendly. Nonetheless, we believe, five occupants can be easily accommodated in the front and middle-row seats. Though the rearmost seats can be easily accessed, thanks to the powered second-row chairs, they are best for children only. On the other hand, the cargo capacity is fairly large and easily competitive as per class standards. With all rows in an upright position, the trunk volume is limited to 12.8 cubic feet, however, folding down the second and third rows adds another 77 cu.-ft.

When compared directly with its rivals, the 2022 Cadillac Escalade emerges as the most spacious SUV. Not only does it sport a capacious cabin that bestows class-leading space in all rows, but it also manages to secure an overall trunk capacity of 121 cu.-ft, which is almost 25% more than the next best alternative. The SUVs from Mercedes-Benz and Infiniti stand close to the BMW X7, however, the latter fails to impress the buyers with its impractical third-row space.

Some of the standout interior features of the 2023 BMW X7 include:

  • Sensafin upholstery
  • Active-charcoal micro-filter ventilation
  • Multi-color ambient lighting
  • Universal Garage door opener
  • Remote Trunk Release
  • Front seat memory

How intuitive is the 2023 BMW X7’s infotainment system?

With 2023 MY, the infotainment system on offer has also been tweaked. The X7 SUV now makes use of a 14.9-inch touchscreen unit that is compatible with the brand’s iDrive 8 system. It is easy to use and does not have a sharp learning curve to it. The graphics of the display unit are inch-perfect and even response timings are top-notch. Additionally, to complement the centrally-placed screen, BMW offers a 12.3-inch gauge cluster. It holds all vehicular information and also adds to the aesthetic appeal of the vehicle. As for features, the X7 comes equipped with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a WiFi hotspot, and also BMW’s digital key functionality.

Some of the notable infotainment features include:

  • Sirius XM Satellite Radio
  • AM/FM Stereo with Radio Data System
  • 10-speaker HiFi Sound System
  • Bluetooth Connectivity
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • USB C-Port Connection

Exterior
7.5/10

The 2023 BMW X7 redesign aims at adapting the vehicle to the brand’s latest strategy. However, as has been the case with many other models, the fullsize SUV seems to have lost its refined charm for a futuristic design. As a result, it looks polarizing and might not suit the taste of all classes of buyers. The major design changes of the SUV are concentrated on its front fascia, with the grille becoming larger than before and a newer set of LED units assuming relevance atop them. The only cosmetic tweak that seems viable is the inclusion of more aggressive fog lamps, which are now housed in a blacked-out L-shaped column. Additionally, the 21-inch bi-color 5-spoke alloy wheels also add to the appeal of the vehicle and largely suit its proportions.

Apart from the revisions to the exterior, the 2023 X7 remains largely unchanged. In terms of its dimensions, the SUV continues to be the shortest in its class at 203.3 inches. It is also the lightest at 5,370 lbs and has smaller width and height of 78.7 and 71.1 inches when compared to its rivals. Nonetheless, its sizable wheelbase of 122.2 inches ensures that the SUV provides appropriate space on the inside.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450, like the BMW X7, might have shorter dimensions but its wheelbase is the longest in the segment at 123.4 inches. In all other aspects, the Cadillac Escalade turns out to be the largest option. It is 211.9 inches long and sports a width and height of 81.1 and 76.7 inches, respectively. On the other hand, the Infiniti QX80 is the second largest SUV and it sports the best-in-class ground clearance of 9.2 inches.

Some salient exterior features include:

  • Heated exterior mirrors
  • 21-inch bi-color alloy wheels
  • Roof Spoiler
  • Panoramic Sunroof
  • LED Front and Rear lights
  • Chrome Grille with Metal look surround

Safety

The 2023 BMW X7 has not yet been put to the test and considering its pricing, it will not be subjected to them as well. However, being based on the Cluster Architecture platform and sporting a comprehensive set of features, seldom that buyers would have to worry about. In its standard avatar, without any optional packages, the SUV comes equipped with adaptive cruise control, Traction and Stability Control, and front and rear parking sensors. Some other standout safety features available with the 2023 BMW X7 include:

  • Front Collision Warning System
  • Blind Spot Detection system
  • Cross-traffic Alert
  • Lane Departure Warning System
  • BMW Assist eCall
  • Parking and Backup Assistant

Competition

2023 BMW X7 vs 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450

The competition between the 2023 BMW X7 and 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 remains as intense as ever. Coming off from fresh redesigns, the German stalwarts promise to be novel propositions that can easily impress the buyers. They are equally quick, easy to drive, and feel ostentatious in every regard. While the GLS-Class gains ascendancy when fuel efficiency is concerned, the X7 guarantees higher cargo space. However, the difference in both these aspects is diminutive. So, when comparing the two SUVs, the decision is a tough one to crack and is best based on the buyer’s personal requirements and likability.

2023 BMW X7 vs 2022 Cadillac Escalade

The 2022 Cadillac Escalade is a delightful option in the fullsize SUV class. It is capaciously built, ergonomically designed, and offers the best cargo capacity compared to any of its direct rivals. It is as quick as the BMW X7 when acceleration is concerned and even bestows interior space to all passengers. However, the American vehicle is overly large and its bearing dimensions might restrict easy movement. Additionally, the standard V8 on the Escalade is a gas guzzler and though its higher torque rating guarantees better towing capacity, Cadillac’s interior quality is not as refined as its rivals. So, among the two SUVs in comparison here, we feel that the 2023 BMW X7 leads the race.

2023 BMW X7 vs 2022 Infiniti QX80

Like the Cadillac, the Infiniti QX80 also makes use of a standard V8 engine option. As a result, it leads the class with its impressive towing capability. It is capaciously designed and does have an advantage over the X7 in terms of its cargo space as well. However, that is where its ascendancy starts to fade. The QX80 SUV has been a part of a similar generation since 2011. Consequently, it looks and feels dated. The interior quality is substandard considering its newer rivals and even the frugality takes a toll on everyday driving. Additionally, Infiniti fails to command a luxurious aura as most of the brands in comparison here and so, we feel you are better off with the BMW and the X7 would not disappoint you.

Final Verdict

The 2023 BMW X7 returns to the market with considerable changes. Its improved engine power makes the drive more enticing and while the exterior design might not have the desired impact, the SUV upholds its practical nature. It is quick, spacious, and comes packed to the hilt with a clever list of specifications. The new iDrive system is intuitive and the improved dashboard design improves the ergonomic setup of the vehicle. Additionally, while the safety ratings are not available, we expect the fullsize SUV to remain rather trouble-free and have a constricted list of complaints only. So, yes, despite our apprehensions about the design, we recommend the 2023 BMW X7 to the buyers.
