Overview

The BMW 2 Series comes with one of the most agile handling and punchy acceleration in its segment. After breaking the sales chart with its predecessor, the automaker is all set to come up with the new 2022 BMW 2 Series Coupe with minor exterior tweaks and better handling than before.

Buying Advice

Despite BMW claiming that the 2 Series being the most affordable offering, it’s quite expensive for this segment. So, we recommend going for the high-performance M240i xDrive variant as it offers all the features that car enthusiasts crave.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

BMW has not yet confirmed any new information regarding the upcoming 2 Series Coupe. But, the 2022 model year is expected to come up with an improved 50-50 weight distribution system that will enhance the overall stability and handling. Other than that, the camouflaged prototype of this car suggests that the new enlarged kidney grille over the current version. The new 2 Series rivals the likes of Cadillac CT4, Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class, and Audi A3.

Features

We expect that the 2022 BMW 2 Series will also be offered in 4 trim levels like its predecessor. The 230i and high-performance M240i versions remain standard and are expected to be released first while the xDrive variants are expected for later release. We are expecting a few techs and design changes across the lineup. We have used the 2021 model’s data for reference.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

The 2022 BMW 2 Series Coupe will also reflect the same MPG figures as its predecessor considering it carries the same powertrain. On average, the 2 Series offers an exceptional fuel economy, especially when you consider the staggering performance it has on offer. With a combined average MPG of 28 miles per gallon, the 2 Series is one of the most efficient vehicles in its particular segment.

The Audi A3 here offers the best fuel economy amongst the group, however, the number is not too significant as compared to the 2 Series, especially considering that the A3 is also the least powerful among all the cars here. As compared to the Mercedes, the MPG figures are identical, but due to the slightly bigger fuel tank, the 2 Series has a higher range. The Cadillac offers the worst efficiency of the bunch but due to the massive fuel tank, the range is exceptionally higher as compared to others.

Interior
9.3/10

The all-new 2022 BMW 2 series coupe will carry forward the same interior styling as its previous year’s model. Currently, no interior changes have been announced or teased by BMW for the new 2 Series Coupe. It will very likely offer the same plush cabin as its predecessor. Expect it to feature the most premium and high-quality materials throughout the cabin. The space inside its cabin, especially the front row, is pretty much the best in its segment.

However, the rear seats are not the best and may feel a bit cramped as you would expect from a car of this segment. One can also choose to upgrade to the M-sport package which adds more premium-ness to its cabin that includes M-performance leather bolstering and stitching, upgraded dashboard panels, etc. The 2 Series Coupe offers 13.8 cubic feet of trunk volume which is a decent amount for any coupe. It has a better cargo capacity than most of its rivals except the Audi A3.

In terms of overall cabin space, the 2 Series fares well against the competition. It has the most amount of headroom than any car of the group. However, the rear seats are lacking in terms of legroom. Surprisingly, the 2 Series offers the best cargo capacity amongst the pack. Some features of this car’s interior are mentioned below:

  • Leather steering wheel
  • Tilt and telescopic steering wheel
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Rearview camera
  • Turn signal in the rearview mirror

2022 BMW 2 Series Coupe: Infotainment & Connectivity

The 2022 BMW 2 Series Coupe will continue with the same simple and well-organized infotainment system inside its cabin. The system is led by a giant 6.5-inch touch screen. The display screen along with all the other functionalities is a little bit tilted towards the driver side to make it easier to operate. Apart from that, it comes with 7 HiFi 205-watt.

Besides, you can also opt for the BMW’s iDrive system to get a bigger display of around 8.8-inches. Moreover, you also get the likes of Apple CarPlay along with BlueTooth hands-free calling, voice-enabled navigation, cruise control, etc. Some infotainment features of this car are mentioned below:

  • 7 stereo Hifi Speakers
  • Apple Carplay
  • 6.5-inch touch screen display
  • Navigation
  • Bluetooth hands-free calling

Exterior
9.3/10

Yes, the 2022 BMW 2 series coupe is very likely to get some minor exterior tweaks that include the large signature kidney-shaped grille. Other than that, the Coupe is expected to carry over the long hood and short deck silhouette of the current 2 Series Coupe. The wide wheel arches of the car are also expected to remain unchanged as they add to the sporty character. The exterior of the 2 Series Coupe still looks stunning and sporty and there are no qualms if most of it is carried over to the new model.

As compared to the rivals, the 2 Series Coupe has the smallest dimensions. The Cadillac is the largest, followed closely by the Mercedes. The Audi seems to be the closest to the BMW, dimension-wise, but it’s significantly wider than the latter. All the cars share similar heft to them, however, the A3 is quite a bit lighter. Some of the exterior features include:

  • 19-inch wheels
  • Enlarged Kidney Grille
  • Slightly tweaked front and rear fascia

Safety
8.0/10

At the moment, BMW hasn’t revealed anything about the safety offerings of the 2 Series. But according to the claims made by a few European journalists, the 2022 2 Series has been optimized to improve the aerodynamics and a better weight balance. Also, the 2022 iteration now sits on a redesigned chassis featuring a longer wheelbase, wider wheel track, and a 12 % increase in torsional rigidity. All in all, we expect that these improvements together make up for better stability and safety of the vehicle. Some of the safety features we may expect are:

  • Tyre pressure monitoring system
  • Cornering brake control
  • Electronic vehicle immobilizer
  • Pedestrian collision alert

Final Verdict

Yes, the 2022 BMW 2 Series Coupe will be an ideal choice that will facilitate the likes of most buyers. Even the current-gen 2 Series offers seamless ride quality along with good acceleration. It also offers some of the best interiors in its particular segment. BMW has always been the very best when it comes to offering a well-balanced package and the upcoming 2 Series is expected to be no different.

              Speedy but needy

Pros - ["Fast and good on mileage", "Aggressive looking"]

Cons - ["Not the greatest suspension", "Very compact"]

I bought this car new in 2020 and I loved driving it to and from work every day. It was fast, reliable, and had all the bells and whistles. As I started to get older, it became more and more of an inconvenience to get in and out of the car given its size and how low to the ground it is. Not to mention, I would feel all bumps while driving which made traffic only that much more unbearable.
