Overview

With its iconic first-generation design, the Audi TT became a style icon, and the third-generation TT is still fashionable today. But those who find the regular TT to be underpowered for some reason have the option to pick the Audi TTS, which borrows the 288 horsepower engine from the VW Golf 7 R. This put the TTS right in the territory of cars like the Toyota Supra 3.0, the Porsche 718 Cayman, and the Mercedes AMG CLA 35. The new TTS's screen has a special display mode that replicates the huge central rev counter you get in the even quicker RS model. For the remaining part, you still get the same metal air vents, low-slung seats, and digital driver's display as before. A few changes to the color scheme and an additional cosmetic exterior package that is offered set the TTS Coupe apart from the 2021 model. Otherwise, it remains essentially unchanged

Buying Advice

The Audi TTS some in a single variety and there aren’t any recommendations to be made. However, Audi provides the buyers to add the additional Black Optic Package, Competition Package from the previous years, or an all-new Bronze Package that enhances the look of the TTS by a noticeable margin. Regardless of whether you add the appearance pack or not, the TTS comes with all the necessary features as standard.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The interior trim pieces, 20-inch bronze wheels, and contrasting stitching for the leather seats and other interior components are all part of Audi's new optional Bronze-themed appearance package. Audi has only been giving the model a minor refresh over the years and this has made the competitors rise in multiple segments as they feel more updated. The Audi TTS however carries its iconic proportions and a sleek roofline that give it a both beautiful and aggressive appearance. However, the TTS might not be your friend's favorite if they are made to sit in the rear row of seats.

Features
7.0/10

The lineup for the Audi TTS only offers one model. The Audi's sole available engine is a 2.0L 4-cylinder turbocharged unit and is all-wheel driven by default. A power trunk, heated side mirrors, keyless entry, push-button start, dual-zone temperature control, and twelve-way power-adjustable, heated front seats are all included in the list of standard amenities. A multifunction steering wheel, ambient interior lighting, and wireless charging are also offered. A 12.3-inch gauge cluster, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, navigation, HD Radio, and Bluetooth streaming are all included. Eight airbags, a rearview camera, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and park distance control are all included in the list of standard safety equipment. All this is offered for a price of $61,295 but the buyers can add an additional $1,250 for the eye-catching Bronze package, which is available for the 2022 model year. It transforms the exterior with 20-inch bronze five-V-spoke wheels with 255/30 summer tires, high-gloss black exterior trim, and badging. The interior is finished off with Fine Nappa leather upholstery, Aluminum Drift inlays, and numerous satin-bronze accents.

Release Date

Audi announced the addition of a new package for the 2022 model during the first half of the year and the vehicle is expected to hit the dealers during the Q4 of 2021.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

Gas mileage is something that isn’t usually associated with performance vehicles but since the TTS is a compact coupe with a tiny engine running the car, it still manages to push out decent gas mileage, making this car practical along with being sporty. The TTS is rated at 23 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway while the coupe is capable of carrying a total of 14.5-gallons of fuel at once. This allows the TTS to cover a 377-mile range in a single tank of gas.

The Audi is rated to be the most efficient for its class, this also leads the vehicle to hold impressive range figures. The total range for the TTS is rated at 377 miles but the highway figures shoot up to 449 miles, thanks to its larger tank. The Mercedes carries a very similar EPA rating to the Audi but does not deliver a similar range as the CLA 35 comes with a lower gas holding capacity. The Porsche takes a fall here with the lowest gas mileage and despite having a decently sized gas tank, does not offer a great range either. Supra despite having a larger engine does manage to offer better fuel economy than the Porsche.

Interior
9.0/10

The cabin of the 2022 Audi TTS can accommodate 4 people, however, the back seats can feel inadequate. The heated, 8-way power-adjustable front row seats with 4-way power lumbar are comfortable and offer great support. Nappa leather is used for the upholstery, and rotor grey or red contrast stitching is used. Automatic air conditioning is a given for extra comfort. The interior red accents, center console, air vents, red diamond stitching on the seat inserts, flat-bottom sport steering wheel with red 12-hour marker, and carbon-fiber interior trim are all included in the Competition package, which is an add-on. Picking the new Bronze Package adds aluminum drift inlays that elevate the look to a more premium finish.

Though the Audi offers 4-passenger seating unlike the Porsche and Toyota which come with just 2 seats, the most practical option here would be Mercedes as it is capable of carrying 5 passengers. The rear seats are much more spacious on the Mercedes but it does fall behind in terms of cargo space. The largest cargo is on the Porsche with Audi following in second place. If legroom is what you're looking for as a driver, the Toyota Supra will keep you happy but storing cargo is going to be a challenge as the car only carries 10.2 cubes of trunk space.

Some standout interior features on the 2022 Audi TTS include

  • Heated and power-adjustable front seats
  • Front seats lumbar support
  • Dual-zone climate control
  • Simulated suede/leather upholstery
  • Front sports seats
  • Optional carbon fiber inlays

How intuitive is the 2022 Audi TTS infotainment system?

The infotainment on the TTS isn’t very fancy and it is evident that they put lesser efforts into this section to cut down costs. The Audi TTS employs the instrument cluster behind the steering wheel to run the MMI interface instead of having an infotainment system located in the center of the dashboard. The rotary controller in the center console or the buttons on the steering wheel can be used to control the interface. Audi Navigation Plus, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, HD radio, Audi Connect with 4G LTE Wi-Fi, SiriusXM satellite radio, voice controls, USB ports, Audi Phone Box with a wireless charger, and a Bang & Olufsen audio system are all standard on the MMI interface.

Some of the standout infotainment features on the 2022 Audi TTS are

  • 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster
  • Bang & Olufsen audio system
  • Apple CarPLay and Android Auto
  • Wireless charger
  • Sirius XM
  • Audi navigation plus

Exterior
9.0/10

Large side air inlets and a three-dimensional Singleframe radiator grille at the front draw attention to the car's wide dimensions. Horizontal lines in the back emphasize the TTS's iconic stance. The driver may slide the fuel pump nozzle directly into the aperture because the tank flap's traditional design lacks a cap, showing a common sports car feature. Its basic equipment includes headlights with LED technology, but Matrix LED is available as an option. The dynamic turn signals are one of this model's typical visual characteristics. The coupe also features an electronic spoiler that pops out of the tail when the car crosses 70 mph. Users can also pick available packages like the Black Optic Package which adds red brake calipers, 20” Audi sport wheels, High-gloss anthracite finish, High Gloss Black Exterior Trim, and High-Gloss Black Exterior Mirror Housings. Pick the Bronze Package and get Audi Black Rings & Badges along with 20” bronze 5-V design wheels. Things don’t end there as there is also a Competition pack available that adds a high-gloss rear fixed spoiler and 20” Audi 10-Y spoke wheels in a matching shade to the wing, along with the dark exterior trims and red calipers.

It is obvious from the Merc's additional seating space that it would be the longest car. It also happens to be the tallest along with the Audi. This increased height gives the TTS a larger ground clearance, making it easier to drive over a rough path. Even though the Audi is considered to be a compact coupe,it is not as light as the Porsche. The Supra happens to be the widest car here and that could come in as a challenge when moving through tight city spaces.

Some of the standout exterior features include

  • 20-inch alloy wheels
  • LED headlights
  • Electric rear spoiler
  • High-gloss black exterior trim
  • Dynamic turn signals
  • Optional red brake calipers

Safety
9.0/10

Both NHTSA nor IIHS haven’t crash-tested the Audi TTS and the same goes for the previous year's model. But considering how well the out models from Audi have been performing, it is most likely that the TTS would follow the same roots. The TTS does miss out on some safety features that its rivals come with. However, the coupe does include electronic stability control, tire pressure monitoring system, Audi Parking System Plus, Audi Side Assist, HD rearview camera, and cruise control.

Some of the standout safety features available with the 2022 Audi TTS are

  • Lane departure warning
  • Blind-spot monitor
  • Cruise control
  • Audi parking system
  • Electronic stability control
  • Tire pressure monitoring system

Competition

2022 Audi TTS vs 2022 Toyota Supra 3.0

A Toyota might seem like an unusual rival to the German sports coupe but the Supra sure does pack in enough fun and package to go against the TTS. The Supra is much more affordable in comparison and comes with a larger 6-cylinder engine that pushes out a much larger power figure. There is no match for the Audi against the Supra in a straight line but the maneuverability that the TTS carries is far superior to what the Supra offers. However, we find the Toyota to offer a better overall value due to its lower pricing.

2022 Audi TTS vs 2022 Porsche 718 Cayman

There is no denying that the Porsche is a quick vehicle too and it feels slightly better than the Audi in terms of its driving experience. The Porsche, unfortunately, is less practical when compared to the Audi as it lacks the rear seats but if drive pleasure is all that you need, the 718 would be the ideal choice and it also offers a manual transmission as standard, keeping the enthusiasts happy.

2022 Audi TTS vs 2022 Mercedes AMG CLA 35

Both these vehicles excel in two completely different areas. The Audi TTS should be your choice of performance and drive pleasure is what you're looking for but the Mercedes offers a more practical cabin and better comfort than the Audi. The Mercedes can keep all the passengers happy, unlike the Audi which comes with cramped rear seats. The major advantage that the Merc holds is that its priced much lower than the TTS, making it much more accessible for the majority of the crowd.

Final Verdict

Although the Audi TTS is a remarkable vehicle in many aspects, there are some drawbacks to be aware of. The entertainment system does include smartphone connectivity and a navigation system as standard but we wish that it had a better setup available like that of its rivals. The few common features left us unimpressed because this is where it falls short the most in contrast to what the market has to offer. The TTS is a sports coupe that excels in both comfort and performance concentration, despite those slight shortcomings. It's a little eager thing that will provide its owner with many enjoyable journeys, even though it's not truly fire-breathing as the TT RS is. The inside is exquisitely designed and furnished with high-end materials. Overall, if you're looking in this market area, the TTS earns a spot on your shortlist.
