Overview

The Audi TTS named after the famous Tourist Trophy, has adopted crucial elements from the racing series cars and improved upon the road performance of the coupe. The TTS coupe with turbocharged 2.0L inline-4 engine, is a much more powerful version of the one you'd get in the more daily driveable S3 sedan.

Buying Advice

The TTS coupe has only a single trim and the perfect coupe for you would have the Quattro all-wheel drive, the technology pack and the Audi Virtual Cockpit added to the list.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

Audi TTS fares off against the Porsche 718 Cayman, the Jaguar F-Type as well as the BMW M240i competition to some extent. The TTS may look tame when you consider power figures, but the dynamic and responsive ride makes the TTS an instant topper on your dream car list.

Engine and Performance
7.0/10

Short of putting the TTS on a racetrack, its handling is near faultless. The all-wheel-drive system does a beautiful job of keeping the car on the intended line. There's great traction and superb poise through turns. - Edmunds

Engine and Transmission

COmpared to the 718 Cayman the TTS coupe still lacks a few horses to match up against the Porsche. Even the BMW M240i coupe comes with a much more powerful engine at a lower price. Audi really ought to pull up their socks to stay relevant in this segment.

Acceleration

Regardless the power figures, the TTS is quick to reach 60 from a standstill in a mere 4.6 seconds, thanks to the great power to weight ratio of the lightweight coupe. The quarter mile is covered in 12.8 seconds with seems slow compared to the time it took to reach 60.

After the initial burst of speed from the Quattro all wheel drive, the Audi's charm fades away and makes way for the Porsche to shine. Despite taking 4.9 seconds to 60, it covers the quarter mile in just 12 seconds. While the BMW is fastest to 60, the Jag is the slowest to reach there taking 5.4 seconds.

Ride and Handling

The Audi TTS is not the sharpest driving coupe on the market unlike the Cayman, but it still better than a few others. The steering feels responsive whenever you throw it in the corners and the amount of grip that it offers makes the drive truly entertaining.

The ride is on the comfort side and not too harsh but when you get the optional S line package, it does make a difference to the car. Body movement is well contained and the quattro all-wheel drive system offers stability, traction and precise driving.

Braking

The brakes are larger than ever before, with 13.3-inch discs on the front and 12.2 on the rear, they deliver powerful stopping force. Weighing about 3000 lbs, the Audi's work like a charm not only on tracks but also city streets. The brake pedal is extremely precise and direct, much like the steering.

In comparison, the F-Type has the largest brakes with 14 inch discs up front and 12.8 in the back compared to the Audi TTS brakes. The BMW and the Cayman also have large 13-inch brakes in the front.

Fuel Economy
5.0/10

The Audi TTS may lag behind in terms of power, but it catches up to the competition when it comes to efficiency. The engine on the TTS is surprisingly fuel efficient and only consumes about 23 miles to the gallon in the city and can manage up to 27 miles in a gallon on highways, which brings the combined fuel economy to about 25.

Interior
8.1/10

Audi's Virtual Cockpit combines the infotainment screen and gauge cluster into one screen in front of the driver. While this occupies the main stage, the climate controls complete the modern interior look, integrating seamlessly into the air vent bezels on the center of the dash. - Edmunds

Seating and comfort

The 4 seater coupe has comfortable and supportive seats but nowhere near the level that the coupes like the 718 and BMW have reached. The cabin feels spacious until you try to carry some luggage, and then feel the need for a larger trunk. With premium materials on most of the console, you can ignore the plastic bits that litter the cabin.

The rear seats are even more unusable than the BMW and the F-Type, the legroom is lesser and so is the headroom.

Infotainment System

The giant high-definition screen inside the Audi is easy to use and intuitive while driving. Although Apple CarPlay is available as standard, but operating it through the rotary knob often gets tricky. It comes equipped with MMI navigation plus with MMI touch system which is one of a kind. The TTS is equipped with Audi Connect which means it will give you an inbuilt 4G LTE connection. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay comes standard for this variant.

Cargo Capacity

The TTS coupe is subpar for carrying cargo at the back, with a tiny trunk at the back and the accessible opening. The interior is also conducive to storage options but isn't exceptionally ergonomic.

A short wheelbase, with even shorter overhangs, means Audi has kept the weighty pieces toward the center of the car. That translates to ideal handling manners so that the TTS can corner as good as anything on the road. - Car connection

Design and Dimensions

Long gone are the days when the Audi TTS looked like a tortoise with wheels, the TTS now has sharp stylized lines running along the length of the car and blend in smoothly into the LED Daytime running lights. The tiny coupe is only 165-inches long, much shorter than even the Porsche 718. However, it sits taller than the Porsche and loses out on the advantage of having a low centre of gravity.

Audi TTS vs Porsche 718 Cayman

The Porsche is far superior to the Audi TTS in terms of handling. The Porsche are well known for their laser precise steering and the Audi TTS doesn't hold a candle. The infotainment on the TTS is however a different story. With the Virtual cockpit, it is far superior to the Porsche's infotainment. Although the TTS's rear seats are quite unusable for seating, they make it easy to carry some luggage, which isn't possible in the 2-seater 718.

Audi TTS vs BMW M240i

The M240i is much larger than the TTS coupe and thus lags behind in terms of the agility despite its much more powerful engine. The BMW has a roomier interior and comfier cabin compared to the Audi, but with the virtual cockpit, the Audi has a far better infotainment. In terms of storage and cargo the Audi fails to match up against the BMW M240i.

Final Verdict

The Audi TTS is one of the most fun and responsive coupes that Audi makes after the R8 which comes with a V10 engine. The thrifty yet punchy engine churns out enough power to make it go quick around the track but also keep the economy good enough to drive it around the city everyday.
