Overview

Amongst the top marquee, the Jaguar F-Type remains one of the most sought-after models for its riveting design and powerful engine options under the hood. The 2020 Jaguar F-Type this year comes mostly unchanged in terms of design but on the features part it adds smartphone connectivity, parking sensors, and a limited edition Checkerd Flag trim. With all these additions the 2020 F-Type dropped the six-speed manual gearbox and now comes only with the eight-speed automatic gearbox. For a starting price of $61,600 and replacing the famed E-Type, the 2020 F-Type comes with various engine options, from a beefy V8 to an entry-level inline-4. Ornate in sublime interior and loaded with tech, let's see in this review of the 2020 F-Type how competent sports coupe it is.

Buying Advice

The right F-Type is purely a personal choice and to pick any trim choice boils down to your driving preference. When it comes to driving preference even the inline-4 is a good choice but the adrenaline rush seeker will find true solace in the supercharged V6 and V8s. Having said that, we'd recommend the R-Dynamic trim for it gives a sweet mix of a supercharged V6 under the hood along with extra additions of features all in one basket.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2020 Jaguar F-Type coupe features a slew of engine options ranging from a turbo-four to either a supercharged V6 or a V8. Except for the turbo-four, the V6 and V8 are available in two state-of-tune. The most powerful of the lot is the range-topping F-Type SVR trim priced at 123,600 and powered by a 575 hp, supercharged V8 that sends power to all four wheels with a bias towards the rear wheels. Nevertheless, almost all the F-Types are exhilarating to drive and are equally luxurious on the inside. But the lack of cabin space, poor ergonomics, and below-par predicted reliability are a few chinks in its armor. Those aside, the F-type doesn't sit resting. Indeed, it lands right in the thick of rivalry and goes head-on against the likes of Porsche 911 Carrera, Mercedes-Benz AMG GT, and the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray.

Features
6.6/10

The 2020 Jaguar F-Type comes in six different trim levels and a coupe and convertible body style. The trim lineup includes P300, P340, Checkered Flag, P380 R-Dynamic, R, and SVR. New for this year is the Checkered Flag trim. Each trim also offers an 8-speed automatic transmission with a choice between RWD or AWD depending on the trim you choose. Starting at $61,600, the P300 features a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4 engine. While the P340, P380, and R-Dynamic trims feature a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 engine. The R and SVR include a supercharged 5.0-liter V8 engine. The last two configurations are the sportiest of the lot and come with the manufacturer's finest craftmanship.

Lastly, there is the Checkered Flag trim which is kind of unique as it gets a turbo-four with the RWD configuration and a supercharged V6 if you opt for AWD. While the features offered are a mix of what you get on the base P300 and the R-Dynamic trim. Other than the standard features listed below in the table there are a few optional features available on all trims like a power liftgate and a carbon-fiber roof or a fixed panoramic sunroof. Other notable optional features include heated and ventilated seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, Meridian surround sound system, etc.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

The 2020 Jaguar F-Type's 4-cylinder engine is quite frugal returning 23 MPG in the city and 30 on the highway. While the more powerful V6 and V8s see a considerable drop in the gas mileage. The 340 hp V6 engine returns 20 MPG in the city and 28 MPG on the highway while the same engine in the 380 hp state of tune returns 1 MPG less both in the city and on the highway. The 380 hp V6 when had with the AWD sees a further dip of 1 MPG both in the city and on the highway compared to the RWD model. Moving ahead, the F-Type R trim with 550 hp V8 returns 15 MPG in the city and 23 MPG on the highway while the F-Type SVR trim with 575 hp V8 returns 1 MPG more both in the city and on the highway compared to the former.

It's no surprise that the V8-powered Corvette is the least efficient of the lot when driven around town while on the highway it matches the F-Type's gas mileage. In the city, the F-Type and the AMG GT offer similar gas mileage while the 911 returns 1 MPG less. On the highway, the F-Type remains the most efficient, and compared to it the AMG GT and the 911 returns 3 MPG less each.

Interior
9.1/10

"The F-Type's interior is attractive and user-friendly, but outward visibility is limited all around. Climbing in and out of the cabin can be an issue for taller drivers, and wider folks will feel a bit confined once inside.  Most cars in this class are easier to live with. "-edmunds

Inside the 2020 Jaguar F-Type space is a compromise you will have to make for an aesthetically pleasing and luxurious cabin. The base trim's seats are trimmed in suede while the Windsor leather-trimmed seats are available as an option. The F-Type offers seating for two, the posh and cozy seats are comfortable but headspace and legroom confine tall or thick passengers to a restricted enclosure. The low-build of the F-Type poses a problem for ingress and egress, and the confined space inside would get claustrophobic unless you opt for the optional fixed panoramic sunroof. The enclosed structure next to the thick front pillars and high-mounted rear windows alongside a drop in the front nose, all combine to form another issue - poor outward visibility.

While a seemingly reasonable cabin gives way to a decent interior, the infotainment system on the Jaguar F-Type is another case altogether. The latest 10" touchscreen with a navigation system and smartphone connectivity via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is an upgrade from the previous year but is still not the coupe's forte resulting in mediocre performance and user experience. Audio is played via a Meridian sound system which can be upgraded to a Meridian surround sound system. Practicality again is not the F-Type's forte as you get a paltry 14.4 cubic feet of storage in the back which goes down to 7.3 cubic feet if you opt for the convertible model.

Here the F-Type and the Corvette are the two sports car that offers only front row seats while the AMG GT and the 911 offer seating for four. Most of the sports cars except for the AMG GT here have one thing in common i.e. lack of headroom. As for the practicality aspect, the F-Type's cargo space is the best among all while the Porsche 911 offers the smallest trunk among all.

"We hope to age as well as the 2020 Jaguar F-Type." -thecarconnection

The 2020 Jaguar F-Type comes virtually unchanged from its previous iteration. Sat alongside four 18" alloy wheels, the coupe is a modern design infused with a classic touch. The feline's craftsmanship is delicately molded with smooth character lines and subtle detail, all culminating into an elegant and aerodynamic sculpture of a 2-door sports coupe.

When viewed from any angle, the sleek silhouette of the F-Type is tasteful and profound. Measuring 176" in length, the F-Type coupe perches 3.9" from the ground, shorter than any most coupes in the competition, and weighs 3,514 pounds.

But when it comes to sports coupe the bigger the better doesn't work. As the smaller coupes like the F-Type and the 911 have the inherent advantage of nimble handling and a poised ride.

  • Chrome-accented grille
  • 18" alloy wheels

Safety
8.1/10

Offered with plenty of safety equipment alongside technology, the 2020 Jaguar F-Type makes sure to keep the driver as well as its passengers protected. Standard safety equipment includes a rearview camera, traffic sign recognition, automatic emergency braking, rain-sensing windshield wipers, front and rear parking sensors, lane keep assist, driver drowsiness monitor, etc. Although both the federal agencies haven't crash-tested the 2020 F-Type yet to gauge the level of protection offered by these features.

Safety Features:

  • Available blind-spot monitoring w/ rear cross-traffic alert
  • Available automatic high-beam headlights
  • Available parallel park assist

2020 Jaguar F-Type vs 2020 Chevrolet Corvette

Monstrosity seems to favor the Chevrolet Corvette more than the F-Type with a loud and bashing engine note, squealing tires on the track, and a roaring exhaust rumble. The Corvette pulls many tricks up its sleeve when it comes to performance and hands down has the best interior yet. However, the Jaguar is an English snob with pops and rumbles of its own but just not as quick or zippy as the Corvette.

What it does exceedingly better is show what opulence and luxurious the interior can be, something the American lags. All in all, the Corvette is your go-to if performance over luxury matters. Else, the Jaguar is a rather refined Englishman.

2020 Jaguar F-Type vs 2020 Porsche 911 Carrera

The Porsche 911 is the most suited alternative to the F-Type. While both offer powerful engines under the hood, the Porsche performs just a tad better than the F-Type coupe. The German's handling is more refined and has a better grip as compared to the F-Type.

However, the F-Type is relatively better when you compare the performance to price ratio. That being said, both the coupes offer gorgeous and opulent interiors and you can't go wrong with either of them.

Final Verdict

The sleek and stylish Jaguar F-Type gets right down to business with its head-turning aesthetic and great packaging. Offering from a powerful inline-4 powertrain to a mighty supercharged V8 under the hood along with a luxurious interior makes it seem like this Jaguar is a worthy buy.

However, it comes with a substandard trunk and interior space, while its infotainment is subpar as compared to its rivals nor is it frugal in terms of gas mileage. Yet for the price it ships, one can't go wrong with the F-Type. It indeed is a worthy buy, especially considering how exotic it is compared to its rivals.
