Compact coupes are generally adored for their style and performance and one such car is the Jaguar F-Type. While some would call the F-Type expensive, the quality and build of this car promise a long and hassle-free ownership experience. One would quickly call the F-Type reliable looking at the single complaint and 2 recalls registered on NHTSA but that isn't really the case as Jaguar sold just 1,701 units of the F-Type in 2020. The car also faces rivals with a lot more user-friendly nature such as the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT, and the Porsche 911 Carrera. Despite its low complaints, there have been reports of a common touchscreen issue that seemed to affect most of the 2020 F-Type owners. Despite the downfalls, the Jaguar has barely recorded any mechanical flaws or maintenance difficulties by the owners, suggesting it to be a rather good pick from the used car market.

Mechanical Problems

  • Brakes – Numerous users stated that they received a recall notification regarding the braking system needing repair. However, when the dealers were approached, the users were told that the necessary parts were unavailable and that they would have to wait until they were notified. This left the users with an unsafe vehicle, increasing the possibility of a collision.

Electrical Problems

  • Touchscreen – Many users found the touchscreen to lag and flicker at times, disturbing the driver as the flickering lights amidst the drive can deviate attention from the road. A part of the reason for this issue is that Jaguar hasn’t updated the infotainment for a while and the dealers also claimed this issue to be common. The mechanics resolved the issue by running a software update, which bettered the performance by a slight margin.

ABS and DSC Systems May Become Disabled

The Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system and the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) may be disabled for a drive cycle if the diagnostic check for the ABS that runs at vehicle startup does not finish in the allotted time. A disabled ABS or DSC system may make collisions more likely.

Jaguar will provide owners notice, and dealers will provide free software updates for the affected vehicles.

Incorrect Tire Placard Label / FMVSS 110

The driver's side door opening's tire placard label lists the wrong size for the rear tires. Because of this, these cars don't meet the standards of FMVSS number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims for Passenger Cars." The erroneous tire size may be installed on the automobile by the owner due to an incorrect tire placard label, which could impact how the car handles and raise the likelihood of a collision.

Jaguar will provide owners notice, and dealers will free of charge swap out the tire placard label for one that specifies the proper rear tire size.

Should you buy the 2020 Jaguar F-Type?

The F-Type is no gibberish in the world of automotive masterpieces. Although known for its design and performance, reliability and ease of maintenance are lesser-known facts about the Jaguar F-Type. This coupe seems to have barely any complaints regarding its mechanical component but the vehicle seems to suffer from a flawed infotainment system which has managed to let many users down. Though not a bad service network, the rivals from Chevrolet, Mercedes, and Porsche have better and larger support, giving them the upper hand in terms of maintenance. The F-Type is also not the best from a practical standpoint and has better options for a much more affordable price which only makes it haded to vouch for the Jag. However, if you have your eyes locked on the F-Type and would want to pick one from a used car dealership, we would recommend getting the brakes checked and enquiring if the car has undergone the recall with valid documentation. We would also recommend not paying over $47,000 for a used 2020 F-Type as they aren't worth breaking that limit for.
