Overview

With EVs dominating every sector of the automotive marketplace right now, the Jaguar I-PACE is another exciting addition. Having made its debut in 2019, the I-PACE is a fresh vehicle from the British automaker that is different from most of its ICE-powered siblings in the Jag and Land Rover lineup. Since the I-PACE is based on the same JLR D7e platform, the new model year carries forward little changes from its 2019 predecessor.

Buying Advice

We will recommend the mid-range SE trim for the best bang-on value for your bucks. This trim totally changes the context of the base trim, by adding larger 20-inch wheels, upgraded LED headlights, and leather upholstery. Besides, the SE trim gets the full range of Jaguar’s best driver assistance aids under Park and Drive packages. Other stellar options that you can add to amp up the comfort factor include adaptive dampers, four-zone climate control, and a heads-up display.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The Jaguar I-PACE is a stellar example of what electron-powered vehicles are capable of, as evident by its energetic performance, decent all-electric range, and nimble handling dynamics. Wrapped in a practical SUV-like body, the I-PACE offers a plush cabin, cutting-edge technology, and commodious interior space. The all-electric SUV segment is still on the verge of development, as the I-PACE faces true competition from the likes of the Tesla Model X and the Audi e-tron.

Features
9.0/10

The 2020 Jaguar I-PACE is offered in 3 trim levels S, SE, and HSE. All the trims include the same electric powertrain with a 90 kWh battery pack. Each trim has its own perks and features. The base S trim features 18-inch 5-spoke alloy wheels, LED headlights, 8-way semi-powered front seats, Ambient Interior Lighting, Manual tailgate, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Lane Keep Assist, and more.

Upgrade to the SE trim and you will get bigger wheels, a power liftgate, and a Drive Package that includes Adaptive Cruise Control, High-speed Emergency Braking, and Blind Spot monitoring. Meanwhile, the top-ranking HSE trim adds heated and cooled front seats, an upgraded sound system, and the Driver Assist Package which has the same features as the previous package but also offers a 360-degree camera display and steering assist.

Fuel Economy
9.9/10

The I-PACE is rated to shell out an EPA-estimated MPGe of 80 in the city and 72 on the highway. In real driving conditions, this equates to a combined MPGe of 76. The I-PACE sports an efficient 90 kWh battery pack that allows an impressive driving range of 234 miles. The battery capacity can be replenished up to 80% in a little less than 40 minutes using DC fast charging. With the standard 240 V AC unit at home, buyers have to wait for around 13 hours for the SUV to fully charge up before they can take it out on a spin.

With its driving range of 234 miles, the Jaguar I-PACE is easily one of the most battery-efficient EVs in the market. Not many EVs can claim an all-electric range of more than 250 miles. However, the Tesla Model X brings it back to reality with its class-leading range of 371 miles. On the other hand, the Audi e-tron provides a range of 218 miles.

Interior
9.9/10

Jaguar has always been the epitome of luxury and class. Its refined assortment of premium materials and fine technology has earned a standout reputation in the industry. The 2020 Jaguar I-PACE carries on the refined assortment of premium materials and fine technology which is seen in other Jaguar models and brings immense practicality plus a sophisticated interior for customers to relish. The dashboard looks flashy from every angle It features an ergonomic arrangement of buttons and tech bits for maximum driver engagement. The center console includes a useful bin under the armrest and a tray below the center stack to fit in all your small stuff and accessories.

The front seats are nicely bolstered to feel comfortable in them. However, for long trips, these seats don’t offer the best support. Still, we have no complaints owing to the generous headroom and legroom in both the front and back. The standard 8-way semi-powered Luxtec sport front seats can be upgraded to 10-way electric memory-grained leather or 18-way heated and cooled, memory Windsor leather front sport seats on the higher trim. Additionally, the rear seats can be folded into a 40/60 pattern and get heated features on the HSE trim. That said, manual tilt and telescopic steering column, auto-dimming rearview mirror, three 12V outlets, dual-zone automatic climate control, Air Quality Sensor, and Ambient Interior Lighting are some standard cabin features on the base I-Pace.

Behind the rear seats, the I-PACE offers 25.3 cubic feet of space while the Audi e-tron has the leading cargo space. At the same time, the Tesla Model X gives a cargo capacity of 26 cu-ft. The notable interior features onboard include:

  • Luxtec upholstery
  • Optional four-zone automatic climate control
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Versatile center console

Moreover, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration seamlessly connect your digital world to your infotainment screen. The in-car WiFi hotspot, Bluetooth, Navigation Pro, voice control, Bluetooth, HD radio, six USB ports, and SiriusXM are some other standard features. Exterior
8.0/10

When it was introduced in 2019, The Jaguar I-PACE laid the foundation for all future Jag models with its unique road presence. The SUV sports a visually appealing look that exudes poise, confidence, and enigma. The sloping roofline design has been implemented to perfection. Other standout visual elements include the flowing waistline, the standout hood scoop grille, and signature rear haunches. The grille is flanked by futuristic LED headlights that symbolize the brand’s double ‘J’ blade graphic. Customers can select from a range of stylish wheel designs from 18-inch 5-spoke to 20-inch wheels with 6 or 5 spokes.

The I-PACE also features a smart aerodynamic design from the front wheel arches to the rear diffuser, enhancing the EV’s range and stability. In the list of standard exterior features, a fixed panoramic sunroof, acoustic laminated windshield, privacy glass, rain-sensing wipers, heated side mirrors, LED taillights, rear fog lights, and tailgate spoiler are included. Fortunately, the Jaguar I-PACE manages to cut some pounds off its curb weight, making it the lightest electric SUV in its segment. The standard air suspension setup also permits it to some degree of off-road activity, but not too much. By raising the ground clearance by 5.6 inches, the Jaguar I-PACE can traverse through 20 inches of deep water. Other standout exterior aspects are:

  • LED headlights
  • Power liftgate, hands-free functionality optional
  • 18-inch alloy wheels
  • Fixed glass sunroof
  • Infrared reflective windscreen
  • Auto-dimming, power fold, heated side mirrors

Safety
8.0/10

Both the safety agencies NHTSA and IIHS have skipped the safety testing of the Jaguar I-PACE. The I-PACE makes amends by providing perimeter alarm, seat belt alert, automatic emergency braking, Driver Condition Monitor, lane-keeping assist, cruise control, and traffic sign recognition. The Park Package is standard on all trim which adds parking sensors, Clear Exit Monitor, Rear Traffic Monitor, and 360-degree parking aid. For more safety features, you can select the upper trims. Highlights of the safety features on offer are:

  • Park Assist
  • 360-degree surround Camera
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane-keeping assist
  • Traffic sign recognition
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • High-Speed emergency braking

Competition
6.0/10

2020 Jaguar I-PACE vs 2020 Audi e-tron

The Audi e-tron is almost comparable to the Jaguar I-PACE in many factors, as both SUVs offer the luxury and elegance that their brands are known for with an electric twist. Both the EVs are evenly matched in terms of technology and safety. The Audi has the edge in terms of interior practicality and spaciousness. However, it falls behind the Jaguar I-PACE in terms of driving range and performance, both of which are very important factors for any EV. Jaguar is also available at a lower base price, making the British EV the better choice than its German counterpart.

2020 Jaguar I-PACE vs 2020 Tesla Model X

The Model X has the onus in terms of performance, outclassing its Jaguar rival in the speed and acceleration charts. The Model X also has a spectacular all-electric driving range, with the I-PACE nowhere within range. Furthermore, Tesla has a host of excellent interior technology that intrigues the mind of every tech geek. However, the interior quality inside the Tesla Model X isn’t up to the standards of a luxury SUV, while the Jag’s cabin on the other hand looks immaculate and upmarket. Some might like the Tesla’s approach to minimalism with respect to its interior and exterior style, but its lofty starting price may convince them otherwise.

Final Verdict
8.5/10

An excellent combination of virtues like zippy acceleration, robust performance, and butter-smooth handling makes the Jaguar I-Pace one of the best EVs around. By adding Jaguar’s stellar reputation for interior quality and technology to the equation, the I-PACE looks like an absolute winner. Despite gripes at its laggy infotainment and unresponsive braking, the Jaguar I-PACE manages to turn the tide in its favor with its positive aspects. Do give it a spin to find out for yourself.
