Overview

The 2020 Tesla Model Y is an all-new electric drive on offer with a power surge ranging from 447 hp to 580 hp. With a spot-on duo of interior tech-ends and touches all around, it paves the way for all electric-inspired drives in the segment.

Featuring a 2-trim lineup of Standard Range, Long Range, and Performance, the 2020 Model Y MSRP can be an expense of $41,190-$64,190 this season. Having said that, it simply translates to the fact that the range-leader Model Y Performance 2021 will cost you $23,000 more than the base Standard Range for enhanced specs and assets.

We Recommend

With a perfect mix of desirable features and power surge in comparison to the rest of the lineup for its cost, the 2020 Model Y Long Range stands out to be the most prominent Model Y 2020 configuration.

The Model Y 2020 has to struggle against the power performance of the Audi E-Tron and Jaguar I-Pace finishes. But it does so in style, thanks to its crowd-apart interior build, quick 0-60 MPH, and 318 miles range.

2020 Tesla Model Y Electric for sale

The 2020 Model Y is available with lease deals starting at $1,190/month for 36 months alongside a signing due of $9,000.

For budget-oriented buyers, the used 2020 Model Y can be availed of with a base price of $59,824. Going for model years like the 2022 Model Y could be a matter of $69,700 and Tesla Model Y 2021 can cost as much as $58,995 along with a listing of up to 63 in total.

Buying Advice

Going for either of the two trims solely depends on your personal choice and requirements. Except for the range and performance, there is hardly any major change in terms of features in both models. Thus if you prefer both power and efficiency then you can opt for the Performance version and if you like to travel long distances and performance is not your concern then you can opt for the Long Range trim.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2020 Tesla Model Y is an icon for practicality and reliability due to its low running costs as electric powered cars are more affordable than IC engine powered cars. Being a new segment of the EV manufacturer and launched recently, the JD Power is yet to rate the 2020 Tesla Model Y. In addition to that the Model Y comes with Full self-driving and Auto Pilot capabilities which provide ease to the driver. There is a new state of the art technology incorporated into the interior of the 2020 Tesla Model Y-- heat pump for interior cabin heating. as far as safety is concerned , the electric american SUV has the highest recognitions from both the governing bodies.

When it comes to true cost to own a Tesla Model Y, the price comes down to $57,587. THe ownership cost of the Tesla Model Y can be broken down to 3 costs namely-- Maintenance Cost, Repair Cost and Depreciation Cost. The maintenance cost of the 2020 Tesla Model for a period of 5 years would be $2,403; the repair cost of the SUV accounts to $4,733 and depreciation cost constitutes to a whopping $31,113. At an additional price of $8000 you can get your 2020 Tesla Model Y equipped with Full Self-Driving Capability. The optional three row seating can be configured with your Model Y at an MSRP of $3,000. Tow Hitch and 20 inch induction wheels can be purchased with the Tesla Model Y 2020 at an additional costs of $1,000 and $2,000.

Buying Advice
9.0/10

We would recommend going for the Long Range AWD Tesla Model Y option since it offers more or less the same features that the Performance Model Y 2020 is offering, at a $10,000 cheaper price. The range of driving in the Long Range is more than the Performance Model Y.

Features
8.0/10

The 2020 Tesla Model Y is an all-new electric SUV from Tesla available in two trims Long Range and Performance. The Model Y Long Range starts at $49,990 while the Performance Model Y starts at $59,990. The 2020 Long Range Model Y trim  comes with 19 inch alloy wheels as standard and you can get the 20 inch alloy wheels at additional price. The Long Range is giving more range of driving whereas the Performance Model Y delivers more power and torque as well has better callibrated performance brakes than the former.

Long-range variants are offered with rear- or all-wheel drive and either a single motor or dual motors. Only the Performance model is equipped with a dual-motor system that drives all four wheels. The Long Range Model Y rear wheel drive got discontinued after 6 months to its launch.

Engine and Performance
7.0/10

"The SUV feels like it accelerates in the same instantaneous manner we've come to appreciate from most EVs."- Motor Trend

The 2020 Tesla Model Y gets two electric motors one at each axle delivering a combined 384 hp and 376 lb-ft of torque. The electric motor powers all four wheels of the car making the Model Y an AWD. The motor is powered by a 75-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Just like any other electric car, the transmission is a single-speed direct-drive transmission that does not shift between gears instead all the power is sent to the wheels at once and it is controlled by how hard you push your right foot.

Both the Long Range and Performance versions do not shy out in terms of performance. The Model Y Long Range does 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds, which is quite fast; the Performance version takes 3.5 seconds to reach 60 mph.

The ride and handling is not great in the Model Y 2022. The increased weight and change in body style increase the center of gravity of the Model Y which in turn results in lesser agile handling.  The four-wheel independent suspension is not agile enough to withstand bumps on roads. The Performance trim comes with performance-oriented brakes which offer much better bite than the standard brakes. The ability to stop from 60 mph is similarly astounding; it did so in only 108 feet.

2020 Jaguar I-Pace offers more power and torque but is slower to 60 than the Model Y. This can be understood from the fact that the I-Pace is more than 300 pounds heavier than the Model Y. That being said, the I-Pace is much more expensive than the Model Y with the base price close to the top end Model Y Performance trim. Similarly, the 2020 Audi e-Tron is approximately $30000 more expensive than the 2020 Tesla Model. Although it has more instant torque than the 2020 Tesla Model Y, the 2020 Audi e-Tron is 1.3 seconds slower than the American EV manufacturer in 0-60 mph.

Fuel Economy
9.9/10

The 2020 Tesla Model Y has an EPA estimated city MPGe of 129 miles, on the highway you get 114 MPGe, and under mixed driving conditions, you can expect 121 MPGe. While with a full battery the 2020 Tesla Model Y has a range of 316 miles. While these are the figures for the Long Range model and if you plan to get the Model Y Performance then you can expect 127 MPGe in the city, 112 MPGe on the highway, 121 MPGe combined, and a range of 315 miles.

Interior
6.0/10

"The panoramic glass roof and big side windows also give a fishbowl-like feel when you're inside the Model Y."- Motor Trend

The interior of the 2020 Tesla Model Y seems to be inspired mostly by the Model 3 sedan. There is ample room all throughout the cabin, so you can sit anywhere and feel comfortable. Tesla offers decent interior build quality and use of upscale materials which makes the cabin a nice place to be in and the all-glass roof which is heavily tinted to protect the occupants from excessive heat further adds to the airy feel of the cabin. Apart from standard functions you also get a suite of entertainment features which include apps like Netflix, Youtube, Hulu, and some video games which help you pass time while waiting near a Tesla supercharger to juice up your ride. That said, these functions are disabled for the driver once the vehicle starts to move.

Tesla takes the win in terms of interior space, as it offers the most amount of space for both the first and second row of passengers and also offers a third row of seating, with ample cargo space. Jaguar offers enough space up front but cuts off on rear legroom. Another thing worth noting in I-Pace is the smaller cargo space compared to the Model Y.

"The 2020 Tesla Model Y adapts the formula of the best-selling Model 3 and applies it to a more popular crossover style for a winning combination."- The Car Connection

The Tesla Model 3 and Model Y have a lot in common and this stands true for their looks as well. From the front, you would take a while to differentiate between both cars. The door handles are also well crafted and almost remain hidden from plain sight when seen from the front.

But technically speaking the Model Y being an SUV should be considered as a smaller version of the Model X and the former's 187-inches length and wheelbase of 113.8-inches surely make that clear. As the Model X is more than 10-inches longer and offers 3-inches more in terms of wheelbase compared to the latter.

Model Y is lighter than the I-Pace but comes with a smaller wheelbase and width which surely hamper its ability to accommodate an adult-friendly third-row seat. But what's baffling is the fact that even though the I-Pace is wider and has a longer wheelbase compared to the Model Y it still isn't as spacious on the inside as the latter.

Standard Exterior Features:

  • 19- or 20-inch alloy wheels
  • Panoramic glass roof
  • All-LED exterior lights
  • Power tailgate
  • Automatic high-beam headlights

Safety
10.0/10

All the cars from Tesla like the Model 3, Model X, and Model S have managed to secure top ratings from the safety institutions like NHTSA and IIHS. Model Y is no exception NHTSA gives it an overall rating of 5 stars and IIHS has rated the mid-size luxury SUV a "Good" rating in Crashworthiness. Till date there have been 14 recalls, 134 complaints and 3 open investigations of the 2020 Tesla Model Y.

Some of the safety features incorporated into the 2020 Tesla Model Y:

  • Forward collision warning
  • Lane departure warning
  • Lane keep assist
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Blindspot monitor
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Available Tesla Autopilot

2020 Tesla Model Y vs 2020 Jaguar I-Pace

The 2020 Jaguar I-Pace costs way more than Tesla Model Y and still fails to match the list of features, performance on offer, or for that matter the range. Apart from that the bigger dimension I-Pace isn't as spacious inside as the Model Y and neither it offers the option of third-row seating which the Tesla gets.

However you get a car from a well-reputed brand, and as Tesla is fairly new there is still no say on how reliable it is, and the build quality remains questionable, whereas Jaguar offers a premium cabin and excellent build quality.

2020 Tesla Model Y vs 2020 Audi e-Tron

The 2020 Audi e-Tron is a very expensive car given that its offers way less than the 2020 Tesla Model Y and the latter is $30000 cheaper than the former. In terms of performance, the 2020 Tesla Model Y is a notch higher than the 2020 Tesla Model Y. In terms of reliability, Audi as a company has an upper hand here when compared with Tesla. We believe the 2020 Tesla Model Y is a new EV in the market and is a safe investment.

Final Verdict
10.0/10

Model Y offers an exceptional range, a long list of high-tech features, and safety features with excellent safety ratings. The Long Range model available to buy now is a bit expensive although a more affordable model is set to come out in the coming time, still, the Model Y is the best choice to go for in the scarcely rivaled segment where the closest rival Jaguar I-Pace's base trim is twenty grand expensive than Model Y's base trim.
