The Tesla Model Y is the company's best-selling vehicle. The car has common traits with the Model 3, and it has more space thanks to the extra row seats. With the rise of electric vehicles, the 2020 Tesla Model Y remains an immensely sought-after model. This compact electric SUV has the perfect balance of preferable functionalities and power relative to the entire line-up for its premium price. The Tesla Model Y issues are quite major and focus on the electrical system, exterior lighting, forward collision avoidance, back-over prevention, airbags, power train, and service brakes. The 2020 Model Y's competitors are equally impressive: the Audi E-Tron, the Hyundai Nexo Fuel Cell, and the Jaguar I-Pace. The 2020 Model Y is a fairly reliable blending in the segment, with only 138 complaints and 14 recalls. Let's examine in greater detail the problems it has encountered thus far.
Engine and Mechanical Complaints
POWER TRAIN: My car's display froze up without warning, and the contact was unable to accelerate. Using the accelerator had no effect. By selecting up/reverse on the gear selector, the autopilot/cruise control disengage function should not be activated. When disengage was commanded, the car inadvertently went into reverse. The car satisfactorily and safely stopped in front of oncoming traffic.
SERVICE BRAKES: With the car in cruise control on the freeway, the vehicle suddenly and harshly applied the brakes, with no human input. Phantom braking is a common occurrence. The phantom braking had gotten out of hand. It was extremely difficult to maintain safe driving. It's known as phantom braking, and it's extremely dangerous. It happens when you're on autopilot.
Safety Complaints
AIR BAGS: The contact owns a Tesla Model Y 2020. According to the contact, after making a right move, one more vehicle collapsed into the front passenger side door and then into the rear passenger side door. The airbags did not deploy. There were no warning lights on. The contact caused pain in the shoulder, neck, and back. There was no need for medical attention. There was a police report filed. The car was towed to a tow yard. The failure was not reported to the wholesaler or the supplier.
BACK OVER PREVENTION: The contact owns a Tesla Model Y 2020. The contact stated that while driving at 3 MPH in reverse gear, the rearview mirror camera display began to drop images and was no longer displaying live action. There was no warning light turned on. The manufacturer technician arrived at his workplace, diagnosed the vehicle on a laptop, and stated that there were no problems with the vehicle.
EXTERIOR LIGHTING: When you turn on either signal at night, the blind spot cams have a red haze on the showcase and you can see a complete image. It can get so bad that you can see anything at times. It appears to be caused by the camera and turn signal being within the same housing.
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: The contact owns a Tesla Model Y 2020. According to the contact, after an update to the car's autopilot characteristic, the phantom braking functionality would intermittently activate without mishap. The contact stated that the phantom brakes autonomously activated while driving on autopilot at 55 mph, causing the vehicle to hydroplane. The vehicle first strayed to the left, then to the right, colliding with a guardrail.
Exterior
EXTERIOR LIGHTING: Tesla recently released version 11 of their user interface. Many safety features were hidden behind menus in this update. During nighttime use, the turn signal causes excessive glare on the side repeater cameras. When making a lane change, the driver is unable to see the blind spot camera feed properly. In the previous version, windshield wipers, defrosters, and seat warmers were all easily accessible.
Dashboard
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM: The vehicle stalled while driving on a surface street, giving me only enough time to pull over to the side of the road. The vehicle came to a complete halt. Another issue is that the touchscreen frequently freezes. Will not display gear selection, speed, or any other information. The touch screen freezes and then crashes to a black screen before rebooting.
