Overview

The 2020 Jeep Wrangler is offered across four trims and two powertrains to choose from. It further has the option of two doors and four doors for each of the variants. The price range of the same goes from $26,995-$40,495. The two powertrains on offer are a 2.0L 4-turbo engine and a 3.6L V6 engine.

With regard to fuel efficiency, the 2020 Jeep Wrangler lags behind by a significant margin. The interiors however cover up for that lag by offering an extremely spacious passenger room. With just the basic exterior features to offer, the 2020 Wrangler faces competition from the 2020 Toyota 4runner and the 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque.

Buying Advice

If you're an occasional adrenaline junkie then the Sport S trim should suit you just fine as it offers plenty for its worth. The next trims seem to have gone slightly overboard with their premium over the Sport S. However, if you spend most of the time at places where the roads don't go, the hardcore offroader - Rubicon is what you're looking for in that case.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

After decades, the new 2020 Wrangler has grown up to become a far more superior car, better for everyday adventure off-roading. It is powered by a standard 3.6-liter V6 engine that is further paired with either a 6-speed manual or an 8-speed automatic. The top trim levels are offered with an optional 2.0-liter, turbocharged, inline-4  motor along with a mild-hybrid electrification system that shutdowns the engine in order to save fuel.

The Wrangler is offered in three trim levels, namely, the Sport, Sport S, Sahara, and the Rubicon. All trims are offered in either classic two-door, short-wheelbase, or extended Wrangler Unlimited four-door configurations. With the prices starting from $30k for the base trim, the Wrangler goes head-to-head with its rivals such as the 2020 Toyota 4Runner and the more luxurious yet capable British - the 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque.

Features
5.0/10

"Throwback styling, heroic off-road capability, you can take off the doors and roof." - Car and Driver

Offered in four trims, the 2020 Jeep Wrangler comes standard with a 285-horsepower V6 engine. The carmaker has also offered the legendary off-roader in two body styles: the base 2-door model and the four-door Wrangler Unlimited, with an extra seat for one occupant. Choosing a Wrangler mainly depends on your selection of body styles.

Beyond the body style, off-road is a factor for a better pick. The Sahara and Rubicon trims are capable of amazing off-road. So, if your weekend plan includes hitting the trials then the Wrangler Sport S is the best pick. This trim offers plenty of technical refinements and handles serious off-roading smoothly. It also cost lesser than the top trims.

Fuel Economy
4.0/10

"The Wrangler gets poor fuel economy estimates by compact SUV standards." - Cars.USNews

It doesn't come as a surprise that the 2020 Jeep Wrangler delivers poor fuel efficiency. In fact, the entire brand has had a similar reputation, however, it is all credited to the power-packed engines that they offer. The engine combined with the 8-speed automatic returns an EPA-rated fuel economy of 18 mpg city, 23 mpg highway, and 20 mpg combined. While the 6-speed manual drops the mileage figures to 17/23/19 mpg.

Given that the 2020 Toyota 4runner comes equipped with a massive 4-liter engine that is no doubt thirsty, it delivers only a marginal fuel efficiency. It leaves the Evoque with what seems to be an impressive gas mileage reading. The Range Rover Evoque offers some impressive fuel economy figures in this class. The Evoque returns 21 mpg city, 29 mpg highway, and 24 mpg combined.

Interior
5.0/10

Sure, it's narrower than other SUVs, and stepping into it is reminiscent of entering a pickup. But for once the interior is a logical, full-featured place instead of something you must tolerate to join the Jeep club.'d-Edmunds.com

Interior Seating and Comfort of the 2020 Jeep Wrangler

Finally, the interiors for the 2020 Wrangler have been upscaled and modernized. The cabin is quite spacious and the center-stack dashboard is replaced by a flat-topped instrument panel. The two-door models can accommodate four passengers while the four-door models can intake five people. The Wrangler Unlimited rear seats are best for adults and tall passengers, but the two-door Wrangler's rear seats can fit only kids.

The Jeep Wrangler has shown up some good interior transformation. The entire dashboard is, however, less prominent than the previous model. The new model offers an airier feel with a lower window line. You'll find the controls mounted on the higher position that makes them easy to reach. The Four-door wrangler is supposed to outsell its two-door counterparts as they offer ample cabin space.

This year's longer wheelbase adds an extra inch of legroom and the split-folding rear seats allow more space in the cargo area. The speaker bar has been shifted to the front and now offers hidden crab handle for off-roading. Additionally, the rear seat occupants get their own climate control vents, and on the top trims, they even get a USB port.

Infotainment of the 2020 Jeep Wrangler

The 2020 Wrangler trims come with three different sized touchscreen infotainment systems. The base models get a 5-inch touchscreen system with traditional button control. The knobs are larger and offer a more tactical feel. The system is integrated with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The intermediate Wrangler models get a 7.0-inch touchscreen with no physical buttons or knobs. The system allows you to interact with it through speech recognition.

The top tier system also comes with no knobs and buttons just like the intermediate system. The system also includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The 8.4-inch large touchscreen offers better visibility and interface.

Cargo Space of the 2020 Jeep Wrangler

With the rear seats up, the 2020 Wrangler offers nearly 32 cubic feet of cargo space, which is roomy and cooler. When you fold the rear seats down, you'll get more than 72 cubic feet-which is enough to haul big items and make some countryside weekend plans.

Meanwhile, the two-door Wrangler fails to offer as much cargo as the Unlimited. It manages to offer 13 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats and 47 cubic feet with folded rear seats. The Toyota 4Runner offers only 9.0 cubic feet of cargo behind the third-row seat, which is the smallest in the segment.

Exterior
8.0/10

"At first glance, the 2020 Wrangler's styling is purely evolutionary. However, there's a lot going on that you may not notice at first glance." -kbb.com

Exterior dimensions of the 2020 Jeep Wrangler

With a completely tweaked and redesigned body, the 2020 Jeep Wrangler is not more fuel-efficient without losing its off-road capability. The front fascia gets a bold and erect front grille along with large headlights carved into the signature seven-slot arrangement. Phew! After these many tweaks, you can still fold forward the windshield for low-speed off-roading, and improve the airflow.

However, design-wise the exterior resembles the last-generation Wrangler but you need to become a keen observer to identify the subtle exterior change. Even the swept-back windshield doesn't tamper the legendary design. Just like the past Wrangler models, the vents in the front fenders minimize underhood pressure and prevent hood wriggle.

It further records 191.3 inches in length and is the widest at 75.8 inches. The next largest vehicle in class is the 2020 Jeep Wrangler; it measures 188.4 inches in length and has the best in class ground clearance of 10.8 inches, while also measuring the longest wheelbase of 118.4 inches.

Safety

"The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the 2020 Wrangler Unlimited four stars out of five in the frontal crash test and three stars in the rollover evaluation." - Car and Driver

The safety rating of the 2020 Jeep Wrangler

The 2020 Wrangler has not been fully crashing tested. The NHTSA has awarded the off-roader a three out of five stars in rollover and a four out of five stars for its frontal crash tests. It gets no overall safety rating yet, there are no side crash test ratings either.

Safety Features

The safety feature count for this year's Wrangler is higher. You'll find four airbags and advanced optional safety features like rear parking sensors and blind-spot monitors. The missing features include automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and active lane control. While a rearview camera is a standard across the lineup.

  • Rear seat reminder.
  • LATCH System.
  • Teen Driver.

Competition
9.0/10

2020 Jeep Wrangler vs the 2020 Toyota 4Runner

The Wrangler offers outstanding off-road performance but disappoints in space. While the Toyota 4Runner provides a bit more space. In the midsize SUV segment, the 4Runner is priced quite higher than the Wrangler trims, and the base 4Runner is less costly than major Wrangler Unlimited trims. The 4Runner also offers great handling with the help of limited-slip differential and skid plates. Where the Wrangler doesn't offer third-row seats, the 4Runner offers third-row seats that can carry seven occupants in total.

2020 Jeep Wrangler vs the 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque

The Range Rover Evoque is considered a budget-friendly SUV in the Range Rover family. The Evoque comes with good off-road capabilities. Evoque comes with a Crawl control that automatically modulates gas and braking duties. There is hardly any driving situation that the Evoque can't tackle. Hence we recommend it over the Jeep.

Final Verdict

With a price tag that is justifiable for every part of this vehicle, Wrangler is one of the best options in this segment. There are very few vehicles that offer off-road capabilities like Wranglers. The modernization of the 2020 Jeep Wrangler JL has not affected its trail-blazing capabilities. The newly refines Sahara trim is priced competitively to go neck-to-neck with more conventional full-sized crossovers. For this year, Jeep has wisely placed the redesigned Wrangler among a wider section of SUV buyers.

              Jeep wrangler review

Pros - ["Great power with the V6.", "Still comes with standard transmission"]

Cons - ["Don't like the fact it has recalls on the pressure plate and clutch assembly. Makes me think there will be future problems.", "The latches on the seat break and are weak. No easy fix for it."]

Overall a fun Jeep to cruise around with. No major problems put 20k miles last year and she keeps on rolling. The fun in the Jeep overrides any problems that arose. The mpg is pretty good. Speed and acceleration are excellent.
