Overview

Being one of the sleekest-looking best-handling SUVs in the market, the gorgeous Alfa Romeo Stelvio takes over steep curves and corners like an expert. This Italian SUV looks the best in the segment too. Despite being heavier, the 2020 Stelvio manages to drive smoothly, accelerate fast, and handle sleekly. For 2021 the Stelvio gets a mildly redesigned interior sling with an upgraded center console. The infotainment system also received a major upgrade as the touchscreen unit is now larger.

Buying Advice

Offering a lot of features at a reasonable price, the Ti Sport is catchy and sporty. You can opt for the Ti Sport along with the Cold Weather Package to add heating functionality to the front seats, steering wheel, and washer nozzles. If possible, don’t hesitate to get the Driver Assist Dynamic Plus Package. It adds Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop, Automatic High-beam headlamps, Full-speed Forward Collision Warning, Infrared Windshield, and lane departure warning.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2020 Alfa Romeo Stelvio is offered in five trims with a starting price tag of $41,400. The engine powering the vehicle is a 2.0LTurbocharged inline-4 mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The 2020 Stelvio is less expensive than the rivals like the BMW X3, Audi Q5, and Mercedes-Benz GLC 300. While the rivals want you to pay more, the 2020 Alfa Romeo Stelvio gets you the best-in-class power and torque figures at the lowest price.

Fuel Economy
4.0/10

The powerful engine isn’t very thirsty but stands inferior to the rivals when compared to its rivals. EPA rates the 2020 Stelvio with 22 MPG in the city, 29 MPG on highways, and 25 MPG combined. The intelligent ZF 8-speed automatic transmission does contribute well in offering decent fuel economy. With a 16.9-gallon fuel tank, the Stelvio promises a range of 372 miles in the city and 490 miles on highways. Compromising a bit on the efficiency figures would surely be worth it, as it offers the best-in-class power, torque, and acceleration figures.

The BMW X3 offers class-leading fuel efficiency and range figures as it is slightly underpowered compared to the rest of the competition. While all others offer similar fuel economy on the highways, X3 has been tuned to deliver the best economy in the city as well. With a slightly bigger fuel tank at 18.5 gallons, Q5 gets the advantage of better range figures on the highway.

Interior
6.0/10

2020 Alfa Romeo Stelvio is one of the most beautiful vehicles in the segment, both from inside and outside. The Italian design and engineering impress every eye. The seats are covered with leather upholstery while the dash gets aluminum trim. The 10-way power-adjustable front seats do offer enough comfort and support to the occupants. The cabin is driver-centered and the controls are intuitive. The minimalistic and elegant design reflects utility and luxury in every element.

The front row is spacious enough, but moving onto the second row, legroom is significantly compromised. However, the headroom is sufficient enough even for taller passengers. The laminated front window glass helps in isolating the cabin from any outside noise, keeping it quiet inside. Moreover, moving to the higher trim levels gets you luxury styling elements and more creature comforts like sport leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated front seats, and 12 or 14-way power-adjustable front seats. Stelvio offers 18.5 cubic feet of cargo capacity which is enough to carry most of your bags and baggage.

All the cars competing in the segment do offer competent interiors. However, the 2020 Stelvio stands a step back when it comes to the rear row. It gets the smallest shoulder- and leg-room for the rear row. Audi Q5 outshines the rest with good enough space on the second row as well. The BMW X3 trades interior space for a slightly better cargo capacity at 28.7 cu ft. Standout interior features in the 2020 Alfa Romeo Stelvio are:

  • Leather-trimmed seats
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • 10-way power front seats w/4-way power lumbar support
  • Heated front seats
  • Heated steering wheel
  • 40/20/40 split fold-down seatbacks
  • Flat-bottom steering wheel with
  • audio controls and Black push-button start
  • Black interior trim
  • Ambient lighting

What’s there to keep you entertained?

For 2020 MY, Alfa Romeo has replaced the old 6.5-inch and 8.8-inch infotainment units with a new 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The system comes paired with an 8-speaker audio system as standard in the base trim but you can opt for an Infiniti premium 10-speaker sound system with a subwoofer or it could be upgraded to a 14-speaker Harman Kardon Premium audio system in the higher trims. Mounted on the aluminum trimmed dash, the system looks premium and elegant.

The infotainment system is getting a decent list of features as standard, though it won’t be as impressive as the ones in the Merc. Still, the interface is easy and sleek, which promisingly won’t distract you while driving. It gets Bluetooth connectivity and Navigation along with Android Auto and Apple Carplay support. It also comes with a 1-year subscription to SiriusXM radio. Standout infotainment features in the 2020 Alfa Romeo Stelvio include:

  • 8.8-inch touchscreen system
  • 10-speaker premium sound system
  • Navigation
  • Wireless
  • Android Auto and Apple Carplay
  • SiriusXM with a 1-year subscription

Exterior
8.0/10

The 2020 Alfa Romeo Stelvio is one of the handsome looking SUVs in the market. With the stand-out Italian looks, the SUV gets enough attention on the roads. Stelvio looks closely the same as the Giulia but stands a bit taller than the low-riding sedan. The three-lobed signature front grille looks more aggressive and appealing in the SUV body style. The unique squinting headlights do add some beauty to the front fascia. The tall and sporty look pertains to the side profile as well.

The compact body design makes it easy to ride even in tight traffic gaps. Coming to the rear end, the LED taillight is beautiful while the exhaust pipes placed on either side look classy. As you climb up the trim levels, you’ll get to see a lot more of the styling elements getting added up to the exterior. The 18-inch aluminum wheels with 5 spokes in the base trims look good, while the 19-inch ones on the higher trim make it look damn stylish.

The BMW X3 is the longest while the Stelvio is the widest. On the other hand, Audi Q5 gets the highest ground clearance in the competition. The BMW X3 offers a significantly better interior and cargo space thanks to its large wheelbase. The GLC 300 is the lightest in the competition and has the largest wheelbase in the competition but its short length affects its cargo space. Standout exterior features in the 2020 Alfa Romeo Stelvio are:

  • Tri-lobed front grille
  • LED Headlamps and taillights
  • 18-inch 5-Spoke Aluminum wheels
  • Dual-Pane Sunroof
  • Blacked-out dual exhaust
  • Dual-chrome exhaust tips
  • Bi-xenon headlamps with Adaptive
  • LED daytime running lamps (DRLs)
  • Brushed aluminum roof rails
  • Rear privacy glass
  • Silver brake calipers

Safety
8.5/10

The 2020 Alfa Romeo Stelvio hasn’t been crash-tested by either the NHTSA or the IIHS. However, the Italian SUV is plentifully equipped with high-tech safety features and driver-assistance tech. Alfa Romeo has kept most of the driver assistance and safety features as options, which will cost you more to add each of those.

Automated emergency braking comes standard while lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, while adaptive cruise control with the semi-autonomous driving mode is available as an option. Stelvio could also be equipped with a blind-spot monitor, cross-path detection, front and rear parking sensors, and so on. Totally, the 2020 Stelvio is a safe and sound SUV to travel in confidently. Standout safety features:

  • Automated Emergency Braking
  • Blind-Spot Monitoring system
  • Optional Lane-Keeping Assist and lane-departure warning
  • Available Adaptive cruise control with semi-autonomous driving
  • Full-speed Forward Collision Warning
  • Cross-path detection
  • Front and Rear Parking Sensors

2020 Alfa Romeo Stelvio vs 2020 BMW X3

With well-laid and spacious interiors, the BMW X3 is a compelling buy in this segment. The class-leading cargo capacity and fuel efficiency add to the level of practicality and relevance that the car has in the market. However, Stelvio is the best in terms of styling, power, torque, and acceleration. On the performance side, Stelvio weighs more. If you prioritize efficiency and practicality, the BMW X3 would be your choice.

2020 Alfa Romeo Stelvio vs 2020 Audi Q5

The Audi Q5 is a proper utility vehicle with immense practicality and reliability. Alfa Romeo hasn’t yet tried to mark their reliability side, where Audi takes up a clear win over it. Though Audi is pricier than Stelvio, it offers a lot more features, bigger cargo capacity, enriched safety side, and better range figures.

2020 Alfa Romeo Stelvio vs 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300

The Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 is such a magnificent SUV, that performs more than what it writes on the paper. It is impressively powerful, efficient, and more subtly built. It offers a wide array of standard features with safety on priority. Stelvio is cheaper than the former, has good underpinnings, and performs well. But being a brand of solid history and identity, the Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 takes the throne.

Final Verdict

Being the most affordable buy in the segment, the new Alfa Romeo Stelvio is a compelling choice. Worth every penny spent on it, the vehicle keeps pumping consistent power and torque to let you commute your rides comfortably. It moves swiftly, shifts smoothly, and promises a composed ride. However, it competes against pricier rivals with high brand value, which poses severe competition. But overall it is a great choice in this segment offering a superb package at a lower price.
