Overview

When it comes to the italian cars, most of us usually think about either a Ferrari or a Lamborghini. All thanks to their reputation for making highly coveted supercars and constant showcases in pop-culture. On the other hand, Alfa Romeo is one name that is not so frequently heard. This is largely because of their unique approach towards their cars that serves a niche group of buyers. However, the past few years have been different as the brand renewed its lineup with affordable but one-off luxury-class vehicles in the coupe, sedan, and SUV segment.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The Alfa Romeo Stelvio is a 5-seater luxury SUV that is the most recent addition to the lineup. It was unveiled back in 2017 and has been largely unchanged ever since. For 2022, the Italian manufacturer has planned to refresh the design of the Stelvio besides a few more additions of other SUVs in the lineup.

Features

For the 2021 model year, Alfa Romeo has limited the trim levels to just three. And also, it has streamlined many of the optional packages by making them standard across the available trims. For the 2022 Stelvio, we may have a new Hybrid variant apart from the existing three variants. Adding to that, we may expect a new infotainment system too.

Fuel Economy
7.5/10

While the SUV is supposed to come equipped with a hybrid powertrain, the fuel economy will surely see a great improvement. However, since that is not yet made official at the moment, the current model’s MPG shall be considered for the upcoming Stelvio. The Alfa Romeo Stelvio is fitted with a 16.9-gallon fuel tank and gives 22 MPG in the city and 29 MPG on the highway.

Although the Q5 has a hybrid powertrain, it offers the same MPG as the Alfa Romeo but because of a larger fuel tank, the range is unbeatable on the Audi. On the other hand, Porsche’s Macan has the least efficient MPG figures but the range is on par with the Stelvio, thanks to the large fuel tank. Moreover, Jaguar’s E-Pace may not have the best MPG or biggest fuel tank, it still manages to do better in overall range than the Stelvio.

Interior
7.5/10

The new Stelvio is expected to come with a lot of updates on the inside for the upcoming year. To be particular, a new center console design along with a redesigned shift lever will be seen. While the rest remains the same as the current model, a slight update to the interior materials is expected.

Though there is no news on the creature comforts yet, the 2021 Alfa Romeo Stelvio offers 6-way power adjusting seats with 4-way power lumbar support for its front passengers. It also adds adjustable headrests and memory seating functions. At the rear, a well-cushioned 40/20/40 bench seat offers impressive comfort and offers adequate space for 3 adults. All these seats are covered in high-quality leather.

Additional comforts like dual-zone automatic climate control, auto-dimming rearview mirror, cloth headliner, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with infused metal make the cabin appear very opulent. This certainly indicates that Alfa Romeo is hell-bent on making great interiors and the 2022 Stelvio will only get better from the inside.

While Stelvio has a fair bit of cabin space, the legroom is lacking in both the rows. The Q5 Sportback offers the best legroom in both the rows along with the highest standard cargo capacity. The E-pace follows Audi’s lead when it comes to cabin room and also offers more legroom than the Alfa. Sadly, the Macan’s seating dimensions are not available but expect it to be close to that of the others.

Some highlight interior features are:

  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • Leather upholstered seats
  • 6-way power-adjustable front seats
  • Cloth headliner

2022 Alfa Romeo Stelvio: Infotainment and Connectivity

The all-new Stelvio for 2022 will have notable changes for the infotainment system in its upcoming model. Though it will have the same 8.8-inch central touchscreen, an updated software that will be more user-friendly is expected.

The rotary-control knob, as well as the features provided by the system, will stay the same but an optional 7-inch driver information display in the cluster can be upgraded over the standard 3.5-inch one. Other than this, the standard 8-speaker audio system offers great sound output and will be continued for 2022.

A few features in the system are as mentioned below.

  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatible
  • AM/ FM/ HD Radio with navigation
  • Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio
  • Wireless charging pad (optional)
  • Steering wheel mounted audio controls
  • Voice-activated and rear-seat audio controls

Exterior
7.5/10

The 2022 Alfa Romeo Stelvio will look a little different, however, as per rumors, it will retain the attractive V-shaped front grille and the headlight style whereas the bumpers and the hood will be modified. There will be a few materials added for a more refreshed look on its front fascia.

Rumored to get a new look, there have been no talks about the rear being changed as it looks fairly modern and not boxy, unlike most of the SUVs in the segment. Moreover, the sporty Italian SUV appears fabulous with its wide fenders and appealing wheels. Even with the changes, Alfa Romeo will keep the dimensions the same as the current 2021 model.

Weighing the least, the Stelvio’s dimensions are compact and it competes very closely with the Audi. Talking about the Q5 Sportback, it has similar dimensions to the Stelvio but is more spacious on the inside besides being the heaviest of all. Porsche’s Macan is the shortest but widest in the segment whereas the E-Pace has much more compact dimensions and sits almost an inch higher than the rest.

  • The 2022 Stelvio will make use of lightweight materials for its body design. Carbon-fibre for its Driveshaft and Aluminium for the engine and doors.
  • We may expect a redesigned bonnet and bumpers, giving a more aesthetically pleasing look.

Safety
7.5/10

Over the years, the Stelvio has proved its mettle in the safety aspect by offering a host of advanced and hi-tech safety features. But sadly, most of them were optional and only a few were standard. With the 2022 Stelvio, we may expect many of the advanced safety features to come standard out of the box. Some of the features we expect are:

  • Rear-parking Aid
  • Lane keeping Assist
  • Blind spot monitor
  • Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Intelligent speed assistance
  • Accurate tire pressure monitoring

Final Verdict

The new Alfa Romeo Stelvio will offer the same sportiness and amazing driving experience as it does currently. It will also get better in terms of looks, whether it be inside or outside. It also seems that the Italian SUV has always been a bit more utilitarian than the others rivaling it. The new Stelvio will be worth every penny as it will outperform any other small SUV. The 2022 Alfa Romeo Stelvio is expected to be ground-breaking with its performance, especially considering the comparatively affordable price that can't be seen anywhere else in the segment.
