Overview

For 2022, the Volvo XC60 sees changes under the hood and retains all the other specs as before. All set for release in late 2021, the prices have increased by $300 and the MSRP starts from $42,650 onwards. The XC60 trim levels have also been retained and you get up to 9 configurations depending on the engine choice and drivetrain. Powered by a 247 hp 2L turbocharged I-4 engine, a 48V mild-hybrid system has been added as standard and the designation has changed to B5 (formerly B5).

Like before, adding the supercharger sees the bump to 295 hp, and the designation changes to B6 (formerly T6). The interior has always been comfortable, spacious, and luxurious, and now sees the tech being updated with the same hardware in place. For the ones who want more power along with practicality, the 2022 Volvo XC60 Recharge with the 400 hp T8 hybrid powertrain is also available. In the competitive segment, it rivals the BMW X3, Porsche Macan, and the Mercedes Benz GLC Class.

Buying Advice

While the 2022 Volvo XC60 is a feature-packed ride from the get-go, the T6 R Design is the best option. For $53,650, you get the more powerful 316 hp engine, and a perfect balance of upscale and sporty features that make it the perfect value for money proposition for everyone.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2022 Volvo XC60 remains unchanged for this year besides the addition of the mild-hybrid unit as standard with the powertrains. The interior is feature-packed and loaded with new tech from the Swedish brand Volvo, in the form of an Android-based infotainment interface, and gesture-controlled tailgate release, before it gets a refreshed generation in 2023.

Under the hood, you get a 247 hp 2L turbocharged I-4 engine with a 48V mild-hybrid unit as standard which is now called the B5. If fuel frugality and power are what you yearn for, then the 2022 Volvo XC60 Recharge with the 400 hp T8 powertrain is the one to pick for an expected MSRP of $55,000.

Fuel Economy
7.3/10

Volvo fits small-displacement engines in every XC60, but hefty curb weight and luxury gear brings fuel economy down.- The Car Connection

The 2022 Volvo XC60 carries the same engine options from 2021, and hence the MPG figures remain intact as well. Opt for the B5 powertrain and you will get 22 MPG in the city, 29 MPG on the highway, and 25 MPG combined. Upgrade to the 316 hp B6 engine, and the MPG figures drop by 2 MPG across all aspects. These are hooked up to an 18.8-gallon fuel tank in all configurations. At full capacity, you can get an overall driving range of 470 miles with the B5 while the B6 will cause this to drop to 432 miles. For the best fuel efficiency, you might have to spring for the 2022 Volvo XC60 Recharge with the T8 powertrain.

The BMW X3 takes top honors with the best MPG figures, however, it offers the smallest fuel tank. The Volvo XC60 is only marginally behind and sits in second place. The Mercedes Benz GLC Class manages to procure the third place on the podium while the Porsche Macan hangs out to dry with its gas guzzler approach.

Interior
7.3/10

With interior styling and rich materials that mirror more expensive Volvos, the XC60 is like having your kladdkaka and eating it, too.- Car And Driver

One of the best aspects of the 2022 Volvo XC60 is its interior. You get a simplistic yet elegant design from the base Momentum trim level itself. The opulent interior impresses anyone who wants to enjoy the finer things that a ride can offer in a choice of 4 interior trims. The front seats offer power-adjustability along with heating capability and provide ample space to be seated comfortably.

Depending on the trim level, the interior accents change from polished or brushed aluminum to wood. The rear seats are also quite spacious for even the tall guys to be seated comfortably. However, if you are anything over 6'2", you might find it a struggle to be seated in the back. Being a family car, it also caters to practicality with a sizeable cargo space of 29.7 cu-ft and lots of cubby spaces throughout the cabin.

Compared to the rivals, the Volvo XC60 offers the best space in both rows and the biggest cargo bay. The BMW X3 is the only one that manages to come close to Volvo's interior dimensions. The GLC-Class also offers decent space but lacks cargo space. For in-vehicular entertainment, you get a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system placed vertically with a Harman Kardon Sound System as standard.

The infotainment system is simple and straightforward to get used to. It offers all of the modern-day functionalities like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, 4G LTE WiFi, and even USB. The sound system is decent and packs the punch that you expect for the money you pay for it.

Some of the most notable interior and infotainment features of the 2022 Volvo XC60 are:

  • Heated and power-adjustable front seats
  • Nappa leather upholstery on seats and steering wheel
  • Driver seat memory
  • 12.3-inch digital driver display
  • Panoramic Sunroof
  • Dual Zone automatic climate Control
  • 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system
  • Harman Kardon Sound System
  • Android Auto and Apple Carplay
  • Bluetooth and 4G LTE WiFi
  • Satellite and HD radio
  • 10 Speaker Audio system

Exterior

Exterior changes are pretty subtle and center around small modifications.- KBB

While the generational change is pegged for 2023, the 2022 Volvo XC60 is going out in style for one last time in its present do. You get LED headlamps at the front with the distinctive Thor's hammer DRLs all across the lineup. Depending on the trim level, the grille gets a chrome or black color treatment. Despite its stance as a mid-size crossover, it looks sleek and stylish.

On the side, the silhouette remains simple and elegant whilst highlighting the 19-inch alloy wheels. From the add-on options, you can even get 22-inch alloy wheels for $2,590 extra. Also, the 8.5-inch ground clearance also comes into a full display from the side. At the back, you get LED taillamps with a domineering road presence overall.

Compared to the rivals, the Volvo XC60 offers the best ground clearance while the Mercedes Benz GLC Class rides closest to the ground. However, the GLC Class is slightly more stable as it offers a marginally longer wheelbase. The Porsche Macan is the most compactly built ride and yet is the widest. The BMW X3 is the tallboy along with comparative ground clearance.

Some notable exterior features which improve the aesthetics are:

  • 19 inches diamond cut all-season alloy wheels
  • Dual exhaust vents
  • LED taillights and headlights with Thor's hammer DRLs
  • Body-colored front and rear bumper and door handles
  • Rain Sensing Wipers
  • Galvanized steel panels
  • Power liftgate with power door lock
  • Rear fog lamps and LED brake lights

Safety
9.8/10

The XC60 has received consistently excellent safety scores over the last few years, which we expect to continue for 2022. - MotorTrend

Volvo as a brand has always marketed the level of safety its cars provide. Since the 2022 Volvo  XC60 will remain unchanged, the safety ratings from 2021 XC60 can suffice. The 2021 Volvo XC60 received a 5-star safety rating from the NHTSA.

It also received the Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS along with an overall Good rating. It offers a host of driver-assistance features that ensure all-around safety and then some. That being said, the features that you can see in the new 2022 Volvo XC60 are:

  • Forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Lane-departure warning
  • Pre-collision safety system
  • Driver Attention Warning
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Driver Attention Warning (DAW)
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Assist (RCCA)
  • Lane Change Assist (LCA)
  • Vehicle Stability Management (VSM)
  • Hill Start Assist Control (HAC)

Competition

2022 Volvo XC60 vs 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLC Class

The Mercedes Benz GLC Class is the ever opulent high rider of the lineup. Despite costing higher than the 2022 Volvo XC60, the GLC-Class offers lesser MPG figures, and has lesser space in the interior and cargo bay.

The only upsides are the luxuries you get, the higher power from the engine, and hence the better performance in accelerating off the line. In retrospect, the Volvo XC60 seems like a better investment.

2022 Volvo XC60 vs 2021 Porsche Macan

The Porsche Macan is the costliest ride in the lineup and a pure driver's car. The power is marginally lesser, however, the performance is miles ahead. However, that is pretty much the only upside. The interior offers lesser space while the MPG figures are far from average.

Additionally, maintenance and long-term ownership are also costly. Hence, the Volvo is the better value for money option.

Final Verdict

All set for launch in late 2021, the 2022 XC60 is a modern-day luxury crossover SUV that comes packed with advanced tech and remarkable performance. The interior is comfortable and luxurious while the exterior is stylish and stands out from a lot of the other cars in the segment. Club that with the lucrative price tag it bears, and the 2022 Volvo XC60 is the perfect car both as a family car and a daily driver.
