Overview

Volvo is a name that resonates with safety and build quality, and the brand has every bragging right for giving us the three-point seat belt. Apart from being safe, earlier Volvo cars and wagons were immensely durable too and the impressive reliability came as a bonus. Fast forward to the current lineup of cars and SUVs from the brand, every vehicle stays true to the legacy of Volvo due to their segment-leading build quality and safety techs along with exemplary performances in the crash tests as well. The Volvo S60 sedan is one such example from the brand that has been around for a little more than two decades now and has been quite a successful one as well.

Buying Advice

We would recommend the base trim since it comes with some tasteful add-on packages for a better experience.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2022 Volvo S60 sedan arrives with some important updates such as getting a mild-hybrid tech strapped to its standard powertrain for boosting fuel efficiency. Other than that, the car remains majorly untouched and we’ll get to that plush and well-appointed cabin once more. Powering the car will be a standard turbo straight-four motor that will drive either the front wheels or all four wheels of the car. In terms of safety, the sedan gets all the important advanced driver assistance techs as standard right from the base trim onwards. The price for the 2022 S60 will commence from $40,295 which will put it in redirect competition with the Audi A4, the BMW 3 Series, and the Cadillac CT5.

Features
8.0/10

The 2022 Volvo S60 sedan will be offered in three trim levels which are Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription. The base price of the car will commence from $40,295 for the Momentum model and every model will be eligible for the optional AWD system as well. Right from the base trim level, the S60 comes in a well-equipped form with plenty of in-cabin standard features and several ADAS techs as standard. The base trim includes features such as auto-dimming IRVM and ORVMs, a panoramic sunroof, faux leather upholstery, a fully digital instrument panel for the driver, a fairly-big 9-inch infotainment display, and two-zone automatic climate control. The mid-level R-Design trim gets some additions such as ambient cabin lighting, a premium 14-speaker Harman Kardon audio setup, a wireless device charging pad, and a sport steering wheel. Additionally, the R-Design also gets the optional Premium package as standard which brings along navigation, power-folding outboard rear headrests, and front parking sensors to the list of features. The top-end Inscription tops it off with techs such as quad-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, and chrome exterior trims.

Fuel Economy
7.8/10

Being a luxury sedan, the Volvo S60 has been quite fuel-efficient in the recent past, and with the latest mild-hybrid tech, the car has also gained in this aspect. The 2022 Volvo S60 has an EPA-rated city mileage of 26mpg along with 35mpg of highway mileage. With a combined mileage of 30mpg and a gas tank of 15.9 gallons, the sedan can cover up to 413 miles inside the city limits and 556 miles out on the highways before heading towards a gas station.

The Audi A4 has almost similar EPA ratings to the Volvo S60, and it can be disappointing since the former makes lower power and torque than the latter. Moreover, due to a similar-sized gas tank to the S60, the A4 offers the shortest driving range numbers here among the rivals on the list. The BMW 3 Series has identical city and combined EPA ratings to the S60 while it returns 1mpg more average fuel efficiency out on the highways as compared to the latter. As a result, it has the longest driving range figures than the rivals here. The Cadillac CT5 is the least fuel-efficient sedan here but it makes up for it to some extent with its bigger, 17-gallon gas tank.

Interior
7.8/10

Apart from their safety department, the other thing Volvo vehicles are good at is in their interior department. On the inside, the 2022 S60 gets a simple and straightforward design with an uncluttered dashboard. There are minimal but tasteful chrome inserts throughout the interior and the dashboard gets a soft-touch treatment on the upper half as well. The center stack isn’t too wide and houses only a few controls including the gear selector stick. The front seats offer superb comfort levels and get heating too along with power adjustments. The rear seats are superbly comfortable too; moreover, the outboard rear headrests get a power-folding option with the Premium package. As standard, the cabin gets a dual-zone automatic climate control but that gets upgraded to a quad-zone automatic unit on the R-Design trim for additional comfort. The only disappointing bit is the sub-par trunk space of 11.6 cu-ft only.

The Audi A4 has one of the best interiors here among its rivals and the overall design is sportier and more appealing than the S60’s interior. The dashboard of the A4 gets a continuous air-vent design that integrates the actual air-con vents and the silver accents on both the dashboard and the center stack give the much-required premium feel. The seats are equally spacious and comfy as compared to the S60’s cabin while the trunk capacity is marginally better. The BMW 3 Series also gets a driver-focused cabin that is quite well-appointed too. The Beemer, however, gets a respectable trunk space of 17 cu-ft which is much better than what all the rivals here offer. The Cadillac CT5 gets a premium but busy interior, especially at the front due to the button-heavy dashboard. The trunk capacity of the CT5 is identical to the S60’s space.

Some of the key interior features available with the 2022 Volvo S60 include:

  • Ambient interior lighting
  • Two-zone/quad-zone automatic climate control
  • Heated front sport seats with cloth bolstering
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Simulated leather/leather upholstery
  • Fully-digital instrument cluster

How intuitive is the 2022 Volvo S60’s infotainment system?

The infotainment system of the 2022 Volvo S60 isn’t too feature-rich but gets the basics covered and then gets some more. As standard, the car gets a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment display that sits between the vertical air-con vents in the middle of the dashboard while there is a rotary knob below it that controls the media settings. The standard features on offer from the system include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and voice control. Additionally, you can upgrade the audio system to a premium 15-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio setup or a 14-speaker Harman Kardon unit. Additionally, you can get a wireless device charging pad and a navigation system as well.

Some of the most notable infotainment features available with the 2022 Volvo S60 include:

  • 9-inch touchscreen display
  • 10-speaker audio system
  • Navigation
  • Bluetooth
  • Voice control
  • 15-speaker Bowers & Wilkins premium audio system(optional)
  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay

Exterior
7.8/10

Volvo vehicles might not be athletic or sporty under their skin but the design aspect has always been top-notch. The 2022 Volvo S60 sedan looks like a baby S80, and that Thor’s hammer headlamp design truly sticks out from the crowd. The front fascia gets a couple of sharp design cues on the lower end along with getting some tasteful chrome trim inserts. From the front end to the rear, the S60 follows a strong Scandinavian design ethos that you’d find in every Volvo car. The side profile of the car gets a sculpted character line on either side and the rear end is striking too with those C-shaped LED tail light units. As standard, the sedan gets 18-inch 5-spoke alloy wheels while bigger 19-inch wheels are offered through an optional package.

The Audi A4 has been quite a looker for a long time now, and the latest design from the brand’s drawing boards has made the sedan look more aggressive than ever. While the side profile of the A4 remains simple, the honeycomb, blacked-out front grille accentuated by the striking LED headlamps gives the sedan a unique identity. The BMW 3 Series has been lucky enough to be excluded from the brand’s latest awkward and huge kidney grille vehicles list. The 3 Series now looks sleeker and more charming than before, and actually looks more expensive than it is. The Cadillac CT5 is the radical guy around the block, especially due to its quirky front fascia along with a similarly striking rear-end design.

Some standout exterior features include:

  • 18-inch alloy wheels
  • Keyless entry
  • Panoramic sunroof
  • Auto-dimming ORVMs
  • Chrome exterior trims
  • 19-inch alloy wheels(optional)

Safety
9.7/10

As mentioned earlier in this article, Volvo has always prioritized safety for all of its vehicles and the 2022 S60 is no exception. The sedan received a full 5-star safety rating from the NHTSA while the IIHS gave it the Top Safety Pick + award too due to its exemplary performance in all of its tests as well. As standard, the sedan gets several ADAS techs which are Forward collision mitigation, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and a reverse automatic braking system.

Some of the standout safety features include:

  • Forward collision mitigation
  • Lane keeping assist
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert
  • Reverse automatic braking
  • 360-degree camera system

Competition
8.0/10

2022 Volvo S60 vs 2022 Audi A4

The Audi A4 has been a long-standing yet successful contender in the segment. Furthermore, the sedan always managed to stay in the highly preferred group of sedans among several other competitors in the class as well due to its impressive design and comfort. When compared to the S60, the A4 gets a better cabin only in terms of design but the former would appeal to the ones preferring a simplistic cabin. The A4 manages to trump the Swedish sedan in terms of practicality with its standard Quattro AWD layout whereas the latter gets it as an option. The A4’s fuel efficiency ratings might disappoint since it makes less power than the S60 but has similar EPA ratings to the latter.

2022 Volvo S60 vs 2022 BMW 3 Series

Much like the A4, the BMW 3 Series is a mature yet fresh luxury sedan in the class. After the latest upgrades, the sedan still looks way better than most of its stable mates. On the inside too, the sedan gets a classy and driver-oriented cabin with ample comfort and features for the passengers as well. It is slightly better than the S60 in terms of power output and performance figures while being quite fuel-efficient too. Overall, the S60 seems to be a better investment if you desire a no-nonsense and plush cabin along with impeccable safety scores.

2022 Volvo S60 vs 2022 Cadillac CT5

The Cadillac CT5 is a cool and quirky-looking sedan in the class and goes head-to-head with the S60 in terms of exterior design too. However, the interior of the CT5 lacks the charm and finesse you’d find inside the S60 and the cluttered dashboard might turn off several shoppers too. The fuel economy part is disappointing as compared to the S60 but the numbers are not entirely terrible either. Moreover, it gets a sizable gas tank to make up for the marginally lackluster gas mileage ratings.

Final Verdict

The 2022 Volvo S60 makes for a worthy purchase if comfort, safety, and fuel economy are the things you’re looking for. The S60 might lack sharpness in terms of handling unlike its German counterparts but the strong design language and the fine interior make up for it more than adequately. The impeccable safety ratings are one of the key reasons to opt for the S60, and it also gets a long list of features inside for the price as well. Overall, it holds its own ground quite firmly amidst the stiff rivalry from mainstream German competitors.
