Overview

If someone asks, what is one of the most selling nameplates in history, what would your answer be? Would it be the Ford Model T, Volkswagen Beetle, or something else? Well, those two renowned cars were the prime sellers in an age where the manufacturing of cars was getting advanced. Stepping into the modern world, where there’s a production of millions of cars, Toyota Corolla has been marked as one of the most selling vehicles worldwide. Been in existence for more than two decades, and offering versatile body styles like hatchback, sedan, and now crossovers (Corolla Cross). Toyota has also expanded the Corolla portfolio by adding a plethora of trim and powertrain options.

Buying Advice

Since there’s just a single trim option, there’s no fuss about ruminating. We’d advise you to opt for the blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, which is a handy addition.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

And if fuel economy is a top priority for you, maybe the 2022 Toyota Corolla Hybrid could satisfy your needs and urge to save fuel expenses. The Hybrid features a 1.8L engine coupled with 2 electric motors, and the best catch is that it looks identical to a standard Corolla, which nullifies the need to opt for something boring. It inherits advanced tech bits, practical and spacious interiors to be rewarded as a great value for money. But it’s the only option available in the market. Rivals like the Hyundai Elantra hybrid and Honda Insight hybrid are the biggest competitors to the Corolla hybrid, but which one should you go for?

Features

The 2022 Toyota Corolla Hybrid continues with a single trim option, the LE hybrid, and comes loaded with all the essential and modern-day quirks which a majority of consumers would find apt. The 2022 Corolla Hybrid would continue to feature 15-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, keyless entry and start, height-adjustable driver's seat, automatic climate control, an 8-inch touchscreen, a six-speaker sound system, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa compatibility, satellite radio, in-car Wi-Fi hotspot, and voice recognition.

Along with these, the new Corolla Hybrid also gets equipped with Toyota’s wide suite of driver aids which the brand loves to call Safety Sense 2.0, which fits the sedan with forwarding collision mitigation, lane departure mitigation, lane-keeping system, and adaptive cruise control. Newly available as an option is the Premium Interior package that adds a leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated front seats, and imitation leather upholstery. While buyers can also opt for an available Blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert with complimentary heated mirrors feature.

Release Date

The 2022 Toyota Corolla Hybrid is expected to be released by the Fall of 2021. However, keeping in mind pandemic restrictions, a change in the timeline could be enforced, if necessary.

Fuel Economy
9.0/10

Finally, the strand and slant which is the forte of all the hybrids around the world is the fuel economy. Pairing a gas engine with an electric motor does empower the vehicle with remarkable efficiency, and the same is the case with the 2022 Toyota Corolla Hybrid. It boasts EPA estimates like 53/52/52 in city/highway/combined conditions, which is a treat to consumers wanting to save a handful on fuel economy. The Toyota hybrid also equips regenerative braking technology adding some crucial miles to the total.

The Honda Insight flaunts the best figures in the city with 55 mpg and returns a combined 52 mpg, while the Elantra hybrid is more efficient on highways. Nonetheless, anything about 50-MPG is enough to make eyes sparkle with merriment. Also, the Hyundai Elantra Hybrid sports the largest fuel tank of the bunch at 12.4 cu.-ft.

Interior
8.2/10

The interiors of the 2022 Toyota Corolla Hybrid encounter no changes, hence the same, clean and functional cabin space remains intact. The cabin is highly functional and spacious for a growing family. Five people can seat with ease, and since the batteries are placed under the rear seats, there’s no ripping of usable space. The interiors don’t have anything fancy, the majority of the cabin is dominated by cloth upholstery and hard plastic.

Both rows offer brilliant comfort and support, while wide doors allow easy ingress and egress. Though six-foot passengers would feel cramped in the rear row. Also, the rear windows are smaller than usual, and it should be an issue for people with claustrophobia since there’s no sunroof. But the light tone of the interiors makes the cabin look airy. Towards the rear, the Corolla hybrid offers 13.1 cubic feet of space for luggage and more. The wide mouth eases the entrance of bigger suitcases, while 60/40 split-folding seats come in handy at events where luggage dominates the occupant number.

*2021 MY data used for reference

The cabin of the Toyota Hybrid is apt, but there’s less soundproofing. However, it isn’t an expensive compact sedan, so it works well. The Honda Insight and Hyundai Elantra hybrid offer more upscale cabin room. Also, both of these rivals have bigger cargo space of 15.1 and 14.2 cubic feet. Both the Toyota and Hyundai have similar interior space, while the Honda offers a tad bit higher legroom at the rear.

Some of the standout interior features are as follows:

  • Keyless entry and start
  • Automatic climate control
  • SofTex imitation leather
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • Heated front seats

What’s there to keep you entertained?

The 2022 Toyota Corolla hybrid features the same infotainment system as the previous model year. Hence the 8-inch touchscreen is stacked on the dash and offers bright and clear graphics. The touch response is also great. There are physical buttons and knobs on both sides to help access the menus. The system incorporates trendy features like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa compatibility along with satellite radio, an in-car wifi hotspot, and even voice recognition. The Corolla features a 6-speaker sound system that should bring peace to all audiophiles. The Toyota Hybrid is generously loaded with features despite being low-budget.

Some of the highlights of the infotainment system are as follows:

  • 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system
  • Six-speaker sound system
  • Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa compatibility
  • Satellite radio
  • In-car Wi-Fi hotspot
  • Voice recognition

Exterior
8.2/10

The 2022 Toyota Corolla Hybrid looks identical to the standard non-hybrid Corolla since the automaker doesn’t want their consumers to compromise on style and design. Though there are subtle styling cues like the blue on the brand’s emblem and various badges to differentiate the Hybrid from the non-hybrid models.

The front fascia features a massive lower grille with sleek LED headlights that look modern. Towards the side, the sheet metal is clean and subtle, though the hybrid features unique 15-inch alloy wheels. There’s nothing extravagant about the exteriors, yet the clean design and modern lines make the Corolla hybrid look appealing.

The Elantra hybrid stands out with aggressive styling, with a whole lot of going on with the side sheet metal, and that makes it the most appealing in its class. However, both Toyota Corolla and Honda Insight hybrids focus on simple and urban design, without any exaggeration. The Toyota hybrid is very lightweight, despite similar dimensions to rivals.

Some of the exterior features are as follows:

  • 15-inch alloy wheels
  • LED headlights
  • Blacked-out front grille with sport mesh insert
  • Optional heated side mirrors

Safety
9.7/10

Toyota leads when it comes to safety standards, and the 2022 Corolla Hybrid follows the same practices to be a safe choice in its class. The 2022 model year hasn’t been crash-tested yet, but it carries over the same robust and sturdy framework as the previous model years. Those have been awarded a good rating from IIHS and a top-notch 5-star safety rating from NHTSA. The Corolla Hybrid also comes inbuilt with a Star safety system and Toyota Safety Sense 2.0.

Some of the standout safety features are as follows:

  • Ten airbags
  • Road edge detection
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane keep assist
  • Forward collision warning
  • Pedestrian detection and cyclist detection
  • Brake assist

Competition
8.0/10

2022 Toyota Corolla Hybrid vs 2022 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid

The Corolla Hybrid feels underwhelming and sluggish against the Hyundai Elantra hybrid. The fresh, aggressive design is more admiring and appealing, and the interiors are refined and upscale. Though, Toyota drags the massive crowd with its storied reliability and longevity.

2022 Toyota Corolla Hybrid vs 2022 Honda Insight Hybrid

The natural rivals to each other, both Honda and Toyota hybrids excel in fuel economy, high reliability, and safety standards. But the Honda packs more power, still delivers brilliant economy, and gets an edge over the Toyota Corolla hybrid.

Final Verdict

The 2022 Toyota Corolla doesn’t bring along significant changes, yet remains a potent pick in the class. With a thrifty and grunty powertrain, spacious interiors, and stylish looks, it continues to be a front-runner. But rivals like the Hyundai Elantra hybrid and Honda Insight hybrid offer more refined interiors. The Honda hybrid has better fuel economy, is nimbler and more appealing. Hence Toyota might need to grip tighter to be at the top.
