Overview

The 2022 Audi A4 remains mechanically unchanged and is a part of the fifth generation of the Audi A4 that was introduced in 2017. The 2022 model year update gets the Black Optics package replacing the chrome exterior elements with gloss-black trims right from the base trim. The more powerful 45 TFSI models on the other hand now come standard with the sport-tuned suspension. It will face tough competition from the likes of Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Lexus IS 300, and BMW 3-Series

2022 Audi A4 Buying Advice

The 2022 A4 offer tremendous value to buyers with state-of-the-art technology and creature comforts on offer. That said since there have been not many major changes to the Audi A4, the 2017 A4 which was completely overhauled shall save you money without much compromise.

The 2022 Audi A4 is Audi’s answer to the luxury compact sedan segment. It features a luxurious interior, modern styling, engaging dynamics, and many tech features. All the models are powered by the same 2.0L four-cylinder, 12-volt hybrid engine in different states of tune for both performance and efficiency needs. The base version produces 201 hp while the higher variants can produce a more desirable 269 hp. All the 2022 Audi A4 models get the Quattro AWD system, plenty of modern and safety tech as standard.

2022 Audi A4 for sale

The 2022 Audi A4 price starts at $40,995 including destination charge and goes up to $51,995 for the top-of-the-line trim. It will offer many interior trim options as a part of optional packages. Audi offers finance offers for the 2022 A4 with an APR of 2.25% while the lease deals start at $519/month for 36 months along with a down payment of $3,505 and an $895 acquisition fee.

Buying Advice

We would recommend the 2022 Audi A4 Premium Plus 45 TFSI trim. Starting at a MSRP of $46,200, it offers many features including 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, Audi’s Virtual Cockpit Plus, rear cross-traffic alert, etc over the base Premium trim features. The 45 TFSI powertrain is more fun to drive and slightly less fuel efficient than the base 40 TFSI. Also, the price difference between the two powertrains is of merely $1600 for the Premium Plus trim, making it the most sensible choice.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2022 Audi A4 is expected to be a segment favorite, thanks to its tech-laden cabin, comfortable seating, and likable handling. The A4 2022 is available for sale in the same 3 trim configurations and gets 2 powertrain options, one offers quick 0-60 MPH acceleration while the other gets you impressive MPG ratings. Similar to all other Audi vehicles, the interior of the Audi A4 is littered with digital displays, including the Virtual Cockpit gauge cluster, which is available as an option.

While it impresses all with its sharp looks, technologically advanced cabin, and its frugality, the high 5-year cost of ownership of around $50,700 will affect some buying decisions. Also, the 75/100 reliability rating from J.D. Power also puts it at the back of the pack in the segment. While the low starting MSRP of $40,995 including the $1,095 destination charge might seem attractive, competitors like Infiniti Q50 and the Volvo S60 offer more value for money.

Buying Advice
8.5/10

We would recommend the 2022 Audi A4 Premium Plus 45 TFSI trim. Starting at an MSRP of $47,295, it offers many features including 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, Audi’s Virtual Cockpit Plus, rear cross-traffic alert, etc over the base Premium trim features. The 45 TFSI powertrain is more fun to drive and slightly less fuel efficient than the base 40 TFSI. Also, the price difference between the two powertrains is of merely $1600 for the Premium Plus trim, making it the most sensible choice.

The base Premium trim starts at $40,095 and includes full leather upholstery, Audi's latest MMI infotainment system, three-zone automatic climate control, etc. Moving up you have the Premium Plus trim which will starts at $45,695 and add LED headlights with signature DRLs, Audi's virtual cockpit plus, 18-inch alloy wheels, heated front seats, and more.

Fuel Economy
5.0/10

The 2022 Audi A4 offers great fuel efficiency figures for its class. The 45 TFSI models deliver about 24 MPG in the city, 31 MPG on the highway, and 27 MPG in combined driving conditions. With a fuel tank capacity of 15.3 gallons, it can travel up to 413 miles in combined conditions.

While the more fuel-efficient 40 TFSI models can deliver about 26/34/29 MPG in city/highway/combined conditions respectively as per the EPA. The fuel tank capacity remains the same and the range jumps up to about 520 miles on the highway.

The Audi A4 40 TFSI is the most frugal of the lot while the BMW 330i comes next in line. The 45 TFSI A4 model is next in the order while the Mercedes and Lexus IS sedans are far less frugal than the two Germans. That said, the larger gas tank brings the driving range of the C-Class on par with its peers. The Lexus loses out in this regard as well thanks to the gas-guzzling V6 under its hood.

Interior
7.0/10

"The A4's build quality is still excellent, and its cabin is finished with high-end materials like leather, aluminum, and soft-touch plastic."  U.S News

To match the exterior modern styling, the interior of the 2022 Audi A4 sedan is also made a tad bit more sporty. With the high-quality material selection of the cabin paired with several premium features, the A4 2022 sedan is going to be way above the ordinary. The upright seating position, the solid lines along with the dash, and the flowing design elements bring forth a very modern cabin style. The infotainment screen is mounted on the center of the dashboard above the air-con vents. The steering feels good to hold and gets mounted controls for better convenience.

The rear seats are very comfortable and offer good under-thigh support as well. The rear seats are 40/20/40 split for extending the limited cargo capacity that haunts most compact sedans like the A4. Although, its 12.0 cu-ft of trunk space is very much comparable to the segment it fights in. For higher cargo capacity, the Audi A4 Allroad wagon might fit the deal better. The Audi A4 offers a tri-zone climate control system, power sunroof, leather upholstery, heated front seats, LED interior lighting, etc as standard, and there 4 interior upholstery colors to choose from.

All the three German sedans are surprisingly very similar in terms of space in the front row while the Lexus IS 300 is the one with the maximum front-row of leg space. While in the rear the Lexus IS 300 has the least amount of leg space while all the three Germans have more than 35-inches of leg space which is decent for the segment. The trunk capacity of around 12 cu-ft in the Audi 2022 A4 is better compared to the rivals but the BMW 330i beats it with 17 cu-ft of the trunk.

The 2022 Audi A4 gets Audi’s MMI infotainment system with a 10.1-inch touchscreen display. It comes with Bluetooth connectivity, USB ports, and voice commands. For seamless smartphone connectivity, it will offer Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as well. Also, the available Audi Virtual Cockpit Plus will feature a 12.3-inch high-resolution display with 3D map functionality. Some other features like SiriusXM, WiFi hotspot, and navigation system can be had as optional. The 19-speaker Bang and Olufsen system is recommended for a better musical experience.

Some of the standout interior features are:

  • Ventilated front seats & heated rear seat
  • Leather steering wheel and upholstery
  • LED interior lighting & Power sunroof
  • Tri-zone climate control system
  • 10.1-inch touchscreen display w/Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
  • 12.3-inch Audi Virtual Cockpit Plus digital gauge cluster
  • 19-speaker 755-Watt B&O Premium surround sound system

Exterior
5.0/10

"The A4 styling in the renderings doesn’t depart too far from the current design. However, it is much more chiseled and defined than today’s car."  Motor 1

The exterior design of the 2022 Audi A4 is not very flamboyant but modern. The front fascia imbibes the signature hexagonal mesh grille and sleek LED headlamps with daytime running lamps. The front bumper design looks edgy, to say the least, and blends well with the front fascia for a more unified design. The side profile is minimalist with no aggressive character lines and gives the 2022 A4 a typical executive sedan look.

The chrome on the window panes lends it a premium appeal and the outside mirrors are heated and power-adjustable. The 17/18-inch 10-spoke forged alloy wheels look sporty and the rear profile gets LED taillamps with dynamic animation turn signals. The dual exhaust tailpipes look sporty and there are 7 paint color options for the buyers to choose from. The low curb weight aids in the handling while the 5.2-inch ground clearance offers a low slung sporty stance to the sedan.

The 2022 Audi A4 is lighter, longer, and wider than its competition. The BMW 330i rides the highest while Mercedes has the slow slung stance that scrapes its belly on curbs and potholes. The Lexus IS 300 sits on a shorter wheelbase and lacks adequate rear-seat legroom and it is the C-Class that looks the most modern and striking of them all. It offers adequate ground clearance though. Some of the standout exterior features are:

  • LED headlamps
  • LED taillights with dynamic turn signals
  • Dual exhaust tailpipes
  • Heat-insulating glass for side and rear windows
  • Power-adjustable, heated exterior side mirrors

Safety
9.9/10

The 2022 Audi A4 hasn’t been crash-tested yet but we will refer to the 2020 Audi A4 to give you an idea about what to expect in terms of safety. The 2020 Audi A4 received a perfect 5-star overall rating from NHTSA and went on to be the ‘Top Safety Pick’ of the IIHS for the compact luxury sedan segment.

We expect the same safety ratings for the 2022 A4. The Audi A4 also comes loaded with many driver-assistance features but most of the active safety features will be reserved for higher trims or have to opted with options for an additional sum.

Some of the standout safety features are:

  • High beam assist
  • Automated emergency braking
  • Lane departure warning
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Traffic Jam Assist & Audi active lane assist
  • 360-degree surround-view camera system
  • Blind-spot monitoring system

Competition
7.0/10

2022 Audi A4 vs 2022 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

The Mercedes-Benz C300 4Matic is at par with the 2022 Audi A4 sedan in terms of interior and performance. However, in terms of styling and driving dynamics, the latter comes off as a clear winner. The Mercedes-Benz C-Class offers a better range and similar efficiency figures. However, the Audi A4 offers better legroom across the second row. It also offers a more engaging driving experience as compared to the C-Class, making it a more preferred choice.

2022 Audi A4 vs 2022 Lexus IS 300

As compared to the sixth generation Audi A4, the Japanese Lexus IS 300 isn't as lucrative. Other than the lower maintenance cost of the Lexus IS 300 there isn’t any area where it beats the Audi A4. That said, both the sedans have received a five-star safety rating from NHTSA. Thus, if you prefer low upkeep cost and fuss-free ownership go for the Lexus, and for everything else Audi A4 is the right choice.

2022 Audi A4 vs 2022 BMW 3-Series

The BMW 3-Series, especially the 330i Xdrive, is one hell of a drive. With great handling and driving dynamics, the BMW 330i gives the Audi A4 stiff competition. Both the cars have similar performance and interior space but the BMW 330i happens to be much more engaging to drive. The BMW 330i offers better cargo capacity while Audi A4 offers better legroom. It also offers a better infotainment system than the 330i. However, the BMW 330i is a driver's car and we recommend choosing the BMW 330i over the Audi A4.

Final Verdict

If you’re looking for a premium sedan that is a good performer and is loaded with a decent list of features, the 2022 Audi A4 sedan will be the perfect vehicle for you. With different trims and two powertrains to choose from, the Audi A4 will take the in-cabin experience to a much higher level which is a rarity in a budget German sedan these days. That said the A4 2022 feels way more attractive and bold and if that is something you are a fan of then the Audi A4 sedan is the one to look forward to.
