Overview

After completely overhauling the Elantra with a redesign, updated powertrains, and much more, Hyundai also added a hybrid model to the mix with the latest generation. The Elantra Hybrid joins several other recently launched hybrid models in Hyundai’s lineup including the Ioniq and Sonata, and takes a similar approach, combining a low-power electric motor with a smaller engine. The standard Elantra was already one of the best compact sedans in the market, so the Hybrid model will certainly bolster its market share against rivals like the Honda Insight, Toyota Prius Hybrid, and Toyota Corolla Hybrid.

Buying Advice

Since the base Blue model includes everything the average buyer looks for like heated front seats and dual-zone climate control for interior comfort and automatic headlamps and a suite of driver assistance features on the outside for making sure the drive remains under one’s control. Therefore, it's really not worth it to spend over $4,500 more for the Limited model. For added convenience, customers can also opt for the cargo and preferred accessory package which includes some essentials like a cargo tray, net, and side bins.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

Since the Elantra received a complete redesign last year, it only gets some minor updates for 2022 but the ability to perform and deliver the expectation is no less than any refreshment. An expected price of nearly $23,550 exclusive of additional packages seems to be an affordable one in isolation but the real scenario will be concluded if it stands firm against the gust of comparison with those established logos.

Features

The 2022 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid is available in two distinct trim levels, Blue and Limited. Starting with the base Blue model, you get features like automatic headlights, 16-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry, heated front seats, cloth upholstery, and an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system in addition to all the modern assets such as wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, satellite radio, and more. Hyundai also includes plenty of driver assistance features as standard right from the Blue model.

Next in line is the Limited model which adds a sunroof, leather upholstery, ventilated front seats with power adjustment for the driver, 17-inch alloy wheels, full LED headlights, and dual 10.25-inch high-resolution displays, one for the instrument cluster, and the other for the infotainment system. You also get an upgraded 8-speaker audio system from Bose, wireless charging, and customizable ambient lighting with this trim level.

Apart from the standard features, there are optional packages on offer as well to give an extra dimension to its overall appeal. The first one in the queue is the Preferred Accessory Package that costs $140 with which a cargo hook, first aid kit, and cargo side bins are included and the next to follow is the Cargo Package at $190 that encompasses a reversible cargo tray, cargo net, and cargo block under its shade. Hence, it is quite evident that the 2022 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid can be a business of one’s analysis and checking out.

Fuel Economy
8.5/10

Being a hybrid, you expect stellar economy figures, and the Elantra Hybrid doesn't disappoint, returning 53 MPG in the city and 56 MPG on the highway. However, opting for the range-topping Limited model will cut the figures down to 49 MPG and 52 MPG respectively.

The Elantra Hybrid is also capable of all-electric low-speed driving at parking lot speeds, allowing the engine to cut in only when the 1.3 kWh battery gets discharged. Mild regenerative braking is also provided to improve efficiency.

Being hybrids, efficiency is a given for all the other three models as well. However, the Elantra manages to eke out more miles to the gallon on the highway than all of its rivals, and also includes the biggest fuel tank, for a usable highway range of nearly 700 miles. Both the Honda Insight and Toyota Corolla Hybrid return similar efficiency figures, with the latter offering more range but it is this time Prius Hybrid which takes the edge over these two with its overall powertrain efficiency.

Interior
7.3/10

With the launch of the latest generation, Hyundai has given the interiors a complete restyle with a 4 spoke steering wheel and a streamlined dashboard design that integrates the climate control cents into the extended grille. Both the instrument cluster and infotainment displays are placed side by side, and the climate controls are placed neatly below them. All the switchgears are directed towards the driver, and there are subtle partitions on the right that doubles as a handle. The minimalist approach certainly makes the cabin look modern and expensive. On the higher trims, customizable ambient lighting is provided below the wide air vent.

2022 Hyundai Elantra hybrid Sedan Front Row Seats

The 2022 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid can seat 5 passengers in comfort with plenty of headroom and legroom in both rows. But, the sloping roofline will foul taller passengers. Features like dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, and more are included as standard, while the Limited model also gets leather upholstery, sunroof, and ventilated front seats as an extension. While storage space is adequate at 14.2 cubic feet, only the Limited model offers a 60/40 split-folding rear bench seat arrangement with a foldable center armrest.

Despite their compact dimensions, both the Hyundai Elantra and Honda Insight offer plenty of passenger and cargo space, with the former offering slightly more space in both rows. In comparison, the Toyota Prius Hybrid is the most cramped and least practical with a smaller trunk capacity. The same stays true even for the Toyota Corolla Hybrid as well with a very slight variation with respect to its Toyota sibling. However, the tech-ends inside the cabin are pretty much the same throughout the rivalry structure positioning the Hyundai Elantra Hybrid right at the top.

Some notable interior features include:

  • Heated and ventilated front seats (Limited)
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Proximity Key with push-button start
  • Leather upholstery (Limited)
  • Power tilt-and-slide sunroof (Limited)
  • Voice Activated Dual Zone Front Automatic Air Conditioning
  • Piano Black Instrument Panel Insert

What’s there to keep you entertained?

Like the standard models, the base hybrid trim gets an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system as standard along with a regular instrument cluster. Surprisingly, the base system gets wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, while the range-topping Limited trim with the bigger 10.3-inch system gets a wired interface. Other standard features include a Wi-Fi hotspot, satellite and HD radio, and Bluetooth as well. Higher trim also gets dynamic voice recognition and swaps out the standard 6-speaker audio system for an 8-speaker unit from Bose. A 10.3-inch digital instrument cluster is also included with the Limited model that provides a wealth of useful information.

Some notable infotainment features include:

  • 10.25-inch infotainment system (Limited)
  • Wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto connectivity
  • Satellite and HD radio
  • Bose 8-speaker premium sound system 9Limited)
  • Wi-Fi hotspot

Exterior
8.0/10

With the launch of the seventh generation back in 2020, the Elantra received a significant design overhaul with an aggressive and bold design like most modern Hyundais. The massive front grille gives way to sleek headlights placed on either side and forms a body line that extends to the rear.

But, the party piece of the new Elantra is its rear end, with a massive LED light bar that extends to both ends and a protruding trunk lid that forms a makeshift spoiler. Unlike other hybrid offerings, the 2022 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid looks identical to the standard model save for a hybrid badge at the rear. The base Blue model follows the standard design with chrome elements and 16-inch alloy wheels, while the Limited model gets sportier dark chrome elements and bigger 17-inch alloys.

While dimensions are similar across the board, the Hyundai Elantra is slightly bigger than the others, and also gets the longest wheelbase. As a result, one gets an ambivalent dynamics where the straight line stability is given more prominence over the cornering control and that is simply because of the fact that the sedans are, by default, resistant against roll over and toppling. On the other hand, both the Honda Insight and Toyota Corolla get similar dimensions and wheelbase meaning similar handling controls at the driver’s end.

Some notable exterior features include:

  • 17-inch alloy wheels (Limited)
  • Automatic full LED headlights (Limited)
  • LED tail lights
  • Dark chrome front grille (Limited)

Safety
9.4/10

So far, the 2022 Hyundai Elantra has only gone through the NHTSA safety tests, and it passed with flying colors, securing a full five-star overall rating. After its launch last year, the 2021 model also managed top ratings in the IIHS safety tests and received the "Top Safety Pick" award. The latest seventh-generation Elantra is based on the Hyundai-Kia K3 platform that lowers the center of gravity for improved handling and utilizes a multi-load path structure to dissipate energy and protect occupants.

Like most modern Hyundai models, the Elantra Hybrid also gets plenty of standard safety features including forward-collision warning, blind-spot collision warning, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keeping assist, driver attention warning, and more. Upgrading to the Limited model also includes reverse collision avoidance assist, and highway driving assist. Unfortunately, the premium and convenience packages are not available with the hybrid models.

Some key safety features include:

  • Forward collision avoidance with pedestrian detection
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Lane-keeping assist
  • Lane following assist
  • Driver attention warning
  • High-beam assist

2022 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid vs 2021 Toyota Prius Hybrid L Eco

The necessary steps that are being taken by the auto manufactures are quite visible with the strides that this alternate powertrain setup is making every passing year. Both Hyundai Elantra Hybrid and Toyota Prius Hybrid L Eco are two capable machines on offer that have got things in their respective realms to sort or at least curb the ongoing fuel crisis.

2021 Toyota Prius Hybrid L Eco

But if one has to choose between the two, then it has to be the Hyundai Elantra Hybrid as it outpaces the Toyota in almost all sections, be it performance or space management, or range practicality. The capacity to seat 5 in a go more promising is also an added advantage with it.

2022 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid vs 2021 Honda Insight

To distinguish itself from the Civic, Honda has made a lot of changes with the Insight, using upscale materials and plenty of modern features befitting a hybrid. The Honda Insight is also the quickest hybrid in its class, outpacing all of its rivals with more performance, and surprisingly, better efficiency. Thanks to the Civic platform, you also get better interior and cargo space with the Honda Insight. But, the Elantra hits back with its quick DCT transmission and modern design that stands out among hybrids.

2021 Honda Insight

While it is harder to decide between the two, the Honda Insight remains a better Hybrid. Like the Elantra, the Insight is also available in multiple trim levels with plenty of features on offer.

2022 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid vs 2021 Toyota Corolla Hybrid

With similar prices and spec sheets, the Hyundai Elantra Hybrid and Toyota Corolla Hybrid seem like similar options. But, with a DCT gearbox, and better power output, the Elantra is significantly faster than the Corolla, while still being more efficient. The Elantra also offers better interior space in both rows, and can also squeeze in more luggage. The Elantra also offers a lot more features with the higher Limited trim, while the Corolla Hybrid is limited to the base LE model, which includes only the basic features.

2021 Toyota Corolla Hybrid

Overall, the Hyundai Elantra is easily the better pick of the two. Hyundai has also outdone themselves with the Elantra’s modern design, outshining even the Corolla which used to be one of the sportier and aggressive-looking Hybrids in the market, making it a lot more appealing to potential buyers.

Final Verdict

Overall, the 2022 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid has all the makings of being the next best-selling model in its class. With plenty of performance, a unique DCT gearbox setup, and updated suspension, the Elantra Hybrid also balances handling and ride quality. Fuel efficiency ratings are also among the best in class, and like a typical Hyundai, you also get a lot more for the money including plenty of driver assistance features right from the base model. While the choices are limited for hybrid compact sedans, the Hyundai Elantra Hybrid is one of the better options out there.
