Overview

Once in a while, we experience a new product launch by a new brand and in 2021 we have experienced the launch of the fully electric Polestar 2, a product by Volvo’s branch. The brand did its homework before introducing the product into the hot EV market and tried to fulfill the general requirements of the audience. The Polestar 2 is launched just in the right segment of mid-size luxury sedans and it’s also one of the finest EVs that are present in the market.

Buying Advice

Both the trim levels are loaded with plenty of features and the latest technology, Polestar also offers 3 packages to the customers which can be integrated into the vehicle as per the customer’s need. The single motor trim is best for the daily riders and it has more than sufficient power to overcome the daily plus some uneasy tasks, it has better range than the dual motor trim. For features lovers, one thing is to note that both trim levels have an even amount of features but the difference is only in the powertrain & drivetrain.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

To make a powerful impact in the market, the automakers have chosen the correct ingredients and made the right vehicle targeting the right audience. For the year 2021, the brand introduced the vehicle with the dual-motor electric powertrain which has a power-oriented attribute but for 2022, they are all set to launch a single motor trim for those who don’t want over the top performance from their vehicle but just need a modern vehicle to fulfill their requirements.

Features
8.0/10

In 2021, the brand introduced the only trim-level for the Polestar 2 which is powered by the dual-electric powertrain. They did this just to compete with the EV market with the sheer performance and the driving dynamic of the vehicle but the audience wanted a modern vehicle powerful enough to fulfill their basic plus some extra requirements. As to meet the demands of the audience, for 2022 they have included the single motor powertrain trim-level with the rear-wheel-drive system at a much lower price range, now customers can choose which trim they want.

Release Date

Booking of Polestar 2 has already begun on the official website of Polestar and the good news is that customers can view official details of the smaller trim level Polestar 2 single motor. The automaker is also providing three different additional packs with either of the trims and they have stated that the delivery of the 2022 Polestar 2 Dual motor will start nearly about Oct 2021, whereas the Single motor can be booked on the website but it’ll arrive in the market by late 2021.

Fuel Economy
9.9/10

Electric vehicles work on the electric power which they consume from the battery, the more power a vehicle consumes the more that vehicle is inefficient. The data in the table given below is mentioned with respect to how much energy an electric vehicle consumes to travel up to 100 miles of distance, a lower number means better efficiency and better range. Relative to that information, the polestar 2 consumes around 19.7 kWh in the city driving, 30.6 kWh on the straight highways, and 25 kWh under the combined conditions. All these consumptions take place from a 78 kWh of total battery capacity.

Out of all three vehicles, Polestar 2 energy consumption for 100 miles of range is higher than the rivals and it’s somewhat around 25 kWh/100 miles under combined driving. On the other hand, Hyundai Ioniq performs much better and even consumes less energy of around 21.2 kWh/100miles and Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus outperforms the other two with the lowest consumption of 20.4 kWh/100miles which states that the battery management system of Model 3 is much better. Even though the Polestar 2 consumes more energy, the reason behind its higher range is the biggest battery pack of 75 kWh.

Interior
6.0/10

Unlike the popular Ev brands that provide the vehicle a minimalist design and unfurnished flat cabin, the Polestar 2 has been granted a cool minimalist but furnished Scandinavian flat cabin and it does look great. The inside of the cabin is covered with a soft touch and expensive material that feels lovely & luxurious. One can opt for the optional sunroof which reflects the Polestar logo. The gear selector is also very futuristic with a piano black finish & Polestar logo.

In the center of the dash sits a nice, clear portrait infotainment screen which runs on the Android user interface, it’s got all that one needs & so easy to navigate and one more thing is that there is no need to connect a smartphone for google maps and assistant. The front and rear seats are quite spacious for all types of riders, the front heated & power-adjustable sheets definitely give a lot of adjustability options to the rider and the passenger. All the seats are covered in vegan-friendly material but one can surely opt for the leather upholstery with some additional price.

A mid-size sedan means the seating capacity for 5 occupants which is generally the right approach and here all three Evs seem to follow that rule. In the first-row seats, Polestar 2 offers the best headroom and hence would be a place for tall people but Tesla Model 3 takes first place in the shoulder and leg space, Hyundai Ioniq is as spacious as others, practically bit it marginally left behind than the rivals. In the rear compartment, Tesla steps down its position and Hyundai takes over it but on paper, Polestar 2 seems slightly less spacious. Some highlights of features of the cabin of Polestar 2 are mentioned below:

  • A complete digital instrument cluster
  • Power seats with mechanical backrests
  • 4-Way power lumbar support
  • Heated front seats
  • Alarm system including rear door power child locks
  • 4 USB-C connectors
  • Sunroof
  • Fabric upholstery
  • Optional leather upholstery

How intuitive is the infotainment system?

Electric vehicles have a separate fan base because they have all sorts of cool features and the latest technology. It also gets easier for automakers to integrate new and amazing features into an electric vehicle and that is what Polestar has done to its vehicle, with the help of google they have implemented the Android-based infotainment user interface in the 11.2-inch touchscreen display.

The interface comes with the built-in google maps, Google Assistant, and the google play store. Some highlights of infotainment system are:

  • 11.2-inch Android-based touch screen infotainment
  • 13-Speaker Harman Kardon Premium audio system
  • Wireless charger
  • Digital instrument cluster
  • AM/FM stereo with satellite radio
  • 4 USB ports
  • 3 Months satellite radio service

Exterior
8.0/10

The exterior styling of this vehicle looks just like a typical Volvo as it’s based on the XC40 platform that’s why it’s quite high. The front end gets an average sized-black grille with actual vents, the grille also houses the sensors and the radars for advanced safety systems. The small round LED foglights are covered in the black fake vent houses, front LED matrix headlights with the LED DRLs to give the car a classic yet futuristic appeal.

On the side profile, as standard the car gets the 19-inch alloy wheels but can be upgraded to the 20-inch size, it doesn’t matter which one you chose as both of them look pretty awesome. The wheel arches and running board are covered in big black cladding proving an SUV sort of look. The rear has the coolest LED taillights which can adjust its throw with respect to the brakes applied. In the middle of the rear side, sist the Polestar logo radiating a clean and sober look.

Most of the weight of an EV is covered by its battery, the bigger the battery pack the heavier the car will be, in that sense, Polestar should be the heaviest one but due to the unavailability of the data nothing can be said. Hyundai Ioniq is far smaller in total length but its other dimensions are approximately the same as its rivals. Tesla has the lowest ground clearance just by 0.4 inches than Ioniq & Polestar 2, but this should not be an issue as electric vehicles are not made for offroading, and as far as one knows that this much clearance is enough to clear some rough patches. Some highlights of exterior features & design are:

  • 19-inch Black diamond-cut alloy wheels
  • Summer tires
  • LED matrix headlights
  • Rear park assist camera
  • Retractable frameless exterior mirrors
  • Rain sensors
  • LED taillights
  • Steel rooftop on lower-trim
  • Optional Sunroof for lower trim

Safety
9.0/10

The Polestar 2 is still a brand new product that is trying to establish its feet in the harsh conditions of the automotive market and that is the main reason behind not being tested by the biggest NHTSA & IIHS crash testing organization. Since Polestar was a branch of the well-trusted automotive brand Volvo and Polestar 2 has been designed on the platform of the XC40 which means that it should be safe to travel in this vehicle.

If that is not enough for the satisfaction of the mind then you will be pleased to hear that the EURO NCAP has granted the vehicle with the best five-star safety rating in the overall crash tests. Although the brand history is still partially under the mist and in that respect nothing can be said about the reliability of the product. All the important safety features of the vehicle have been mentioned below:

  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Pilot assist
  • Forward collision mitigation
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Lane keep assist
  • Animal & Pedestrian warning
  • Forward & reverse automatic emergency braking system
  • Lane departure warning
  • Front & rearview cameras
  • Front & rear parking sensors
  • Surround-view parking camera
  • Traffic sign recognition
  • Rain-sensing windshield wipers

Polestar 2 Vs Tesla model 3

Both Polestar 2 and Tesla Model 3 are good products and both offer something different that somewhat makes them different. Even the base trim of the Tesla Model 3 delivers so much performance as a daily driver which one might not need, the exterior styling is completely smooth and has a unibody look, and that suits the need of one who doesn’t want anything fancy.

In terms of design language, Polestar 2 is totally the opposite of Model 3.

Polestar 2 Vs Hyundai Ioniq Electric

The Hyundai Ioniq Electric lies more in the category of the budget electric sedan, even the top trim of the Ioniq costs less than the lowest trim of the Polestar 2. The first difference that separates both the vehicles is the battery pack, Polestar 2 has the biggest battery pack of 78 kWh whereas Ioniq gets a 40.4 kWh battery.

Another difference is that the Polestar has a luxurious interior and has more detailing which gives the cabin a fancy appearance but Hyundai has a minimalist cabin design for regular usage.

Final Verdict

Polestar was part of the Volvo group but the company moved sideways and is now owned by some Chinese groups. The engineers have been doing a fantastic job crafting these beautiful EVs not just for the higher class but also considering the needs of a regular person. The Polestar 2 was already a great product but now it has become even better with the introduction of a new Long-range Single motor trim. This lower trim doesn’t seem to be short on the technology and features that the upper trim has, the design from inside-out is also corresponding to one another with some optional packages and this makes it easy for a regular person to go with the regular performance Polestar 2 Long-range Single motor.
