Overview

The Hyundai Elantra was already a redesigned and updated range of sedans but the inclusion of the hybrid models made it stand out from the crowd. The hybrid trims have almost the same features but are able to offer better power and fuel economy for you. There are several other models from Hyundai that have received their hybrid counterparts but the updated performance of the Elantra is what makes it so special among the lot. The engine is small and the power is not exceptional but the compact sedan comes as a top contender in the hybrid segment.

The Hyundai Elantra Hybrid faces strong competition from the likes of the Toyota Corolla Hybrid and the Honda Insight Hybrid EX in the US market.

Buying Advice

We suggest you ditch the optional advanced features and go for the Limited blue trim for better mileage and more space in the seating area. The cargo and accessory packages are quite affordable and the Winter Weather Package depends on your situation.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2023 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid has two trims and both of them have nothing new to offer this year. The base trim has a price of $24,400 and the higher trim comes with several advanced features at a price tag of $29,000. Now, the best part about the hybrid sedan is the fuel economy which can easily sweep you off your feet but we regret to tell you that the higher trim has lower mileage. The other aspects like exterior design and standard safety features are the same for the two trims. The interior however is slightly different with the higher trim offering more comfort and a few advanced features. The last update made a lot of changes to the compact sedan and we do not expect further improvements for the table topper. However, the Hyundai Elantra Hybrid faces strong competition from the likes of the Toyota Corolla Hybrid and the Honda Insight Hybrid EX in the US market.

Features

There are a total of six trims available for the 2023 Hyundai Elantra but only two of them are hybrid models. The hybrid blue is the base trim available at $ 24,400 while the Hybrid Limited has a price tag of $29,000 in the US market. Three Drive Modes are available for both of them - Normal, Sport & Smart and the models have an array of standard features. The 6-way adjustable driver seat comes with optional lumbar support while the cloth upholstery can be upgraded for leather. The Limited trim has a lot of advanced features like the 10.25-inch high-resolution infotainment system instead of the 8-inch display and Smart Cruise Control is also there. However, the higher trim has lower mileage and lower headroom in the front row.

Release Date

The 2023 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid is expectedly available along with the rest of the non-hybrid models in the US markets in the Fall of 2022.

Engine and Performance
8.3/10

The hybrid engine of the Hyundai Elantra has a size of 1.6L and falls in the inline 4-cylinder category. The FWD drivetrain has a 6-speed EcoShift Dual Clutch Automatic transmission that offers appreciable gear shifting. The best thing about the hybrid engine is that it combines a naturally aspirated I-4 with the EcoShift DCT for the best response. The regular engine generates a considerable amount of power and its combination with the power output from the electric motor is what makes it such a great hybrid vehicle. The 195 lb.-ft of maximum torque is commendable and the 0 to 60 acceleration is among the best figures in the current market. The quarter-mile drag is pretty basic but the available top speed makes the Elantra Hybrid a great option.

The Toyota Corolla has a slightly larger engine but the power output is the highest for the Honda Insight. The DCT offers smoother gear shifting in the Elantra than the CVTs in the Corolla and Insight. The 0 to 60 acceleration is the best for the Honda and it also has a better quarter-mile figure. The Toyota, on the other hand, has the lowest figure in acceleration as well as top speed. The Hyundai sedan offers the highest top speed among its rivals it comes at the most affordable price in the market as well.

Ride and Handling

The ride and handling of the Hyundai Elantra is not too impressive but it is nothing to discard the vehicle right away. The smoother shifting of the DCT is obviously the most attractive part while the hybrid is good at cutting corners while moving at a high speed. The overall seating aspects are comfortable enough to provide you with enjoyable riding even on long roads and the space around the two rows in the base trim will allow you to relax. The strut-type suspension in the front and the torsion beam in the rear offer great suspension ability and the shock absorbers are acceptable as well. The braking is efficient and the anti-roll bar in the front does its job to make the riding safe and secure for the passengers.

Braking Performance

The Hyundai Hybrid has considerable brake rotors in the front but you could wish for slightly larger ones in the rear. The curb weight of almost 3,000 lbs is standard for a compact sedan and it justifies the size of the front and rear brake rotors. The brakes come with ventilated discs in the front to ensure better braking ability and the anti-lock braking system is available for all four wheels. The standard features like brake assists and Electric Parking brake systems are efficient in their roles. The Hill Hold Control makes it easier for the driver to stop and start from 0 while on an upward or downward slope.

The Honda comes with the largest brake rotors in the front while the Hyundai has the largest ones in the rear. However, the three competitors have minimal differences in their respective figures and it is quite impossible to conclude which one has the best braking efficiency. The curb weight of the Honda and the Hyundai is almost the same but the Toyota has a lower body weight. The figures in this category are again very close and even with the brake rotors considered stating the best braking performance is not possible. However, it is needless to say that the three rivals have significant braking capabilities.

Fuel Economy

The fuel economy of the Elantra Hybrid is exceptional which is exactly what you should expect from a hybrid vehicle. The EPA-certified mileage of the Hyundai is 53 MPG on city streets and it is 56 MPG on the highways. The Elantra has a combined mileage of 54 MPG for the Hybrid Blue but the Hybrid Limited has a lower figure which is uncharacteristic of a higher trim. The fuel capacity is technically low for a sedan in this case it does not bother you much. The high mileage results in impressive stats for the range as well despite the smaller fuel capacity and that removes all your worries. The Hyundai Elantra shows why you should opt for a hybrid engine instead of a basic or normal electric when you are looking for a fuel-efficient car.

In case of usual cars the mileage on the highway is significantly better than that in the city but the two primary rivals of the Elantra Hybrid have it the other way around. The Honda Insight has a higher mileage than the Hyundai in the city but both of them have lower figures in highway and combined categories. The Elantra Hybrid has the largest fuel capacity in the competition which makes the range offered by the compact sedan the best. The difference in the size of the fuel tank is minor but the high mileage makes all the difference in range.

Interior
8.3/10

There was a complete restyling of the interior in the latest generation of the Hyundai Elantra and it carries the same features for this year. The first thing you notice inside the car is the four-spoke steering wheel along with the streamlined dashboard. The infotainment unit and the instrument cluster can be found beside the wheel for easy access. The climate control is placed right between them to make sure that it can be accessed by the driver and the front passenger. However, the switches are placed to be accessed by the driver and the overall minimalist approach is a signature for its expensive and modern look. The heated seats in the front can be upgraded to heated and ventilated ones and you can also go for the leather upholstery instead of cloth by choosing the higher trim. The 60/40 foldable seat in the rear offers more space in the Hybrid Limited.

The three sedans offer the same seating capacity but the Hyundai offers the most spacious seats. It has the best head and legroom in both the front and rear seats. The Honda, however, offers more shoulder space in the front row. The higher trim of the Hyundai Elantra has less space in the second row than the base trim. The trunk capacity is almost the same for the three cars with the Honda Insight having the largest space available. The Toyota has the smallest space and the Elantra Hybrid comes with a 14.2 cu.-ft of volume which is considerable for a sedan.

Infotainment System

The base trim has an 8-inch infotainment system that can be upgraded to a larger 10.25-inch unit that comes with the Hybrid Limited from Hyundai Elantra. Wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto connectivity can be found in the Blue trim only but you have to settle for the wired versions in case of the higher trim. Standard features like satellite and HD radio are there along with basic technologies. The 6-speaker standard audio system can be swapped for an 8-speaker Bose premium sound system. The overall UI is satisfactory and it is easier to access the infotainment unit from the driver’s seat without getting distracted from the road.

Exterior
8.3/10

The exterior design and style statement that came with the last generation upgrades are continued this year as well. The Hyundai Elantra Hybrid comes with a bold and aggressive look and the front grille plays a significant role in this. The LED headlights are sleek and they complement the overall design beautifully. Move on to the rear and you will find a wide LED light bar from right to left instead of just two LED lamps on the sides. The projecting cargo lid makes a huge difference to the look and you can say that it works like a makeshift spoiler as well. The base Blue trim has similar elements to the standard Elantra trim but you can upgrade the elements by choosing the Hybrid Limited edition. With slightly larger wheels and expressive sidelines, the compact sedan ensures significant road presence.

All the three rivals fall in the same size category which means they have almost the same dimensions but the Hyundai Elantra has the best figures. The width and height of the Honda are almost the same as the Hyundai. The ground clearance of the Hyundai and Toyota are the same while the latter has the best stats in height. The largest wheelbase can be found in the Hyundai while the Honda Corolla and the Insight have the same figures. The Honda Insight is the heaviest car in the competition while the Toyota Hybrid has the lightest body.

Safety

The NHTSA authorities have awarded the highest ratings in most of the sections in safety and crash tests for the 2023 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid. The IIHS-HLDI also gave the best ratings for the Elantra and it is noteworthy that the 2022 model was chosen for the Top Safety Pick Award which we are certain will continue this year as well. There are a lot of standard and optional features available for the two hybrid trims. The driver monitoring and the collision mitigation system make it safer for the passengers. The side impact beams and the high-beam assist are significant additions to the safety system. Blind-spot monitoring is standard and the hybrid sedan also houses the rear cross-traffic alert system.

Competition

2023 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid vs. 2023 Toyota Corolla Hybrid

The 2023 Toyota Corolla Hybrid has a slightly larger engine but it is equipped with a 1-speed CVT which offers lower performance. The power output is similar to the Hyundai Elantra but the maximum torque and acceleration are not up to the mark. The Corolla also has a lower top speed but the overall ride quality is appreciable. The braking is effective and it allows significant control for the driver as well. The fuel economy, however, is great but it is comparatively lower for the Corolla Hybrid. Neither the mileage nor the range is as good as the Hyundai. The interior design is commendable but it offers less space around the seats compared to its rival. The standard features are acceptable and the price is not too high but we would still opt for the Toyota Corolla Hybrid over the Elantra.

2023 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid vs. 2022 Honda Insight

The 2022 Honda Insight Hybrid has a slightly higher price tag but the smaller engine is capable of generating high power. The acceleration is better than the Hyundai and it has a better quarter-mile drag as well. The ride and handling experience are great for the Honda Insight and it has good braking performance as well. The EPA-certified mileage in the city is better but the Honda Hybrid has lower figures on highways and the range is not as good as the Hyundai either. The interior is stylish and the space inside the cabin is appreciable. The exterior design is attractive and there are a lot of standard and excellent features in the Honda as well. However, it ultimately comes down to individual preferences when choosing between the two.

Final Verdict

The 2023 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid is a great hybrid sedan and it comes with all the aspects you can expect from its price range. The engine is small but the combined capacity of the Gas and electricity does the job for you. The acceleration and top speed are commendable and it has great ride quality as well. The Hyundai Elantra cuts corners smoothly and it offers smooth handling at both high and slow speeds. The braking is swift and the pedals are smooth as well. When it comes to fuel economy, there are hardly any hybrid sedans that offer better mileage or range. The stylish interior with minimalist style can grant you excellent comfort and entertainment. The bold and aggressive look on the outside ensures a lot of road presence and the entire design is attractive. The standard features are the necessary ones and the safety system is exceptional with the highest safety ratings. The price of the Hyundai Elantra is affordable and you can take it home without a second thought.
