Overview

The Hyundai Sonata brings a much-needed pep to the rather boring midsize sedan segment. For the 2023 model year, Hyundai has not made any considerable changes to the Sonata lineup. The 2023 Hyundai Sonata configurations are the same as before, but the Hyundai Sonata SEL offers a larger entertainment touchscreen. The Highway Driving Assist feature is offered only on Limited and N-line trims. The menacing 2023 Hyundai Sonata N Line Night Edition is discontinued.

With multiple trims and powertrains on offer, the Hyundai Sonata 2023 model is one of the best Hyundai cars to buy in 2023. The 2023 Hyundai Sonata specs are pretty good for the asking price. The 2023 Hyundai Sonata starts at $25,450, which is pretty much in line with its competition like the Honda Accord, the Toyota Camry, and the Kia K5 sedans. Check out the video by Car Confections for a visual 2023 Hyundai Sonata review.

Key observations in the video:

  • FWD only sedan
  • Catfish-like front design
  • Modern LED headlights and taillights
  • Four active safety features are standard
  • Digital Key from SEL Plus trim

Buying Advice

The 2023 Hyundai Sonata SEL trim can be considered an ideal balance between price and value. It costs $2525 more than the base SE trim but adds heated front seats, a bigger infotainment screen, and a blind spot warning system over the standard features.

The available Convenience Package (+$2200) offers features like a panoramic sunroof, 12.3-inch digital cluster, Hyundai Digital Key, wireless charging, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a 2nd-row air vent and USB charge port, and LED interior lights.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2023 Hyundai Sonata is a strong contender in the midsize sedan segment. The 2023 Sonata scored an overall 81/100 in the J.D. Power Consumer Rating, which can be considered great, courtesy of very good scores of 82/100, 87/100, and 83/100 in quality, driving, and resale, respectively. As a result, the 5-year cost of ownership is competitive at around $36,900. However, the dealership experience, with a score of 71/100, can be improved. The 2023 Sonata SE is on sale for a total MSRP of $26,565 (incl. $1,115 freight charges).

It can be leased for as low as $289 per month, with a mileage limit of 10,000 miles and $3,499 due at signing. Currently, Hyundai is also offering $1,250 in dealer choice cash if financed via Hyundai Motor Finance. Also, there is a $400 discount via the College Grad Program and a $500 discount via the First Responders Program. The 2024 Hyundai Sonata is just around the corner and features new exterior and interior design. It also adds an AWD option to the base SE trim. So, if you can wait until year-end, then it would be a much better option.

Features
8.5/10

The standard 2023 Hyundai Sonata will be available in four trim levels, starting with the SE. The 2023 Hyundai Sonata price for the base SE trim is $25,450, and an additional $1,115 is levied as destination charges. Some features like an 8-inch touchscreen, driver attention warning, lane follow assist, and forward collision avoidance are standard. The SEL trim adds a power-adjustable driver's seat, a BlueLink connected car system, and heated front seats.

The 2023 Hyundai Sonata SEL Plus gets the party started with its more powerful turbocharged motor along with 19-inch alloys, faux leather steering, and a 12-speaker audio system. The top-of-the line Sonata Limited gets both heating and ventilation for the front seats, a power-adjustable front passenger seat, premium leather seats, and smart parking assist from Hyundai. Also, there are multiple optional packages to choose from, depending on the trim configuration.

The 2023 Hyundai Sonata mpg ratings are 25 mpg in the city, 38 mpg on the highway, and 32 mpg in combined driving conditions. The Sonata 2023 gets a gas tank of 14.8 gallons, which allows this midsize sedan to offer a range of up to 414 miles in the city, 562 miles on the highway, and 44 miles in combined driving conditions. The Honda Accord returns a hybrid-challenging average of 30mpg in the cities while the highway rating is similar to the Sonata at 38 mpg. The combined average is slightly better than the Sonata at 33 mpg. The Toyota Camry astonishes with its almost 40 mpg of highway mileage while both the city and combined ratings are identical to the Sonata’s numbers. The Kia K5 has almost identical EPA ratings to the Sonata as they are based on the same platform.

Interior
8.0/10

The 2023 Hyundai Sonata interior design is modern and ergonomic. However, the quality could have been better. The steering wheel is quite unique when compared to other sedans in the segment, and the dashboard houses the infotainment display in a way, making it look like a plug-in device. The air-con vents are sleek, and the controls are mostly manual, with a cool blue digital display on the control panel itself. The 2023 Hyundai Sonata colors for the interior include black, gray, black with contrast stitching, and tan, depending on the trim configuration.

The center stack is broad, with the gear-selector switches taking up only half of it, while the other half houses the cup holders. The design part aside, the Sonata also offers good seats that offer decent support. From the SEL trim onwards, creature comfort, as well as convenience features, start to make their way into the Sonata, such as dual-zone automatic climate control, keyless entry and push-button start, and a power-adjustable driver’s seat. Both the front seats offer adequate headroom and legroom too, but the rear seats could have been better.

The Honda Accord has an ordinary cabin design when compared to the likes of the Sonata and its rivals. Under plain sight, the Accord hides excellent comfort and gets a cavernous 16.7 cu-ft of cargo space. The Toyota Camry also has a strange dashboard design, but the overall quality is excellent. The Kia K5 gets one of the best interiors here and in the entire segment as well. The K5’s cabin now looks mature, without any flashy design elements present. The list of features on offer with the K5 along with the identical interior dimensions make the K5 a better option.

The 2023 Hyundai Sonata’s infotainment system is intuitive to use. The standard unit comes with an 8-inch touchscreen display that produces crisp and bright images. The menu is spread out neatly and the fluidity of the system makes navigating through them an easy one. Apple Carplay and Android Auto are standard throughout the trim levels while features such as navigation, and satellite radio are available from SEL trim onwards. The SEL Plus trim gets a heavily upgraded 12-speaker Bose premium sound system along with navigation.

Some of the key interior features available with the 2023 Hyundai Sonata include:

  • Heated and ventilated front seats
  • Leather-wrapped and heated steering wheel
  • Sirius XM satellite radio
  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
  • Navigation
  • Wireless Charging
  • Digital Key

Exterior
8.0/10

Hyundai decided to include the Sonata in its polarizing design theme as the current trend has become quite demanding. The front end of the sonata might feel like an afterthought, but the aggressive appeal has been done right. The LED DRLs further extend towards the hood, giving a cool appeal from the front end as well.

The front grille is huge, and the sharp design elements further make the Sonata’s face quite recognizable. From the side profile, the sedan remains devoid of any sharp styles, while it looks spectacular from the rear. The LED tail lamps feature a connected design, while the upper part ends in the lip spoiler on the trunk lid.

The Honda Accord’s design is a fine example of style and practicality. The unique LED headlamps and the front grille make the Accord look like a luxury sedan while its exterior dimensions are almost identical to the rivals here. Toyota vehicles don't look boring anymore, and the Toyota Camry is one fine example of the same.

The front-end design looks quite sporty with sharp styling bits and there are strong hints of an executive feeling all around the sedan as well. The Kia K5 looks absolutely outlandish with its unique design and it wears the sharpest styling bits among the competitors mentioned here.

Some of the 2023 Hyundai Sonata color options are:

  • Black
  • Hampton Gray
  • Ultimate Red
  • Curated Silver
  • Portofino Gray

Safety
8.5/10

The 2023 Hyundai Sonata might have been a hit or a miss in a few aspects, but is quite high in terms of safety quotient. The 2023 Sonata received a five-star safety rating from the NHTSA, which testifies to its high safety quotient. Even the IIHS has given it a "Good" rating in most crash test parameters. So, we can say that the 2024 Sonata will also walk in the footsteps of its predecessor and offer the highest possible safety in its class.

Some of the standout safety features of the 2023 Hyundai Sonata include:

  • Forward collision mitigation with pedestrian detection
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane keeping assist
  • Driver attention warning
  • Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert
  • Smart Parking Assist
  • Surround-view monitor
  • Blind-spot view monitor

2023 Hyundai Sonata vs 2022 Honda Accord

The Honda Accord has been a worthy rival of the Sonata for a long time, and both cars have their own set of strengths. However, the differences have been reduced to almost negligence with the continuous updates and it becomes hard to choose between the two.

Both the sedans have almost similar performance aspects along with almost similar fuel economy numbers as well. On the inside, the Accord sports a practical and comfortable cabin while the Sonata offers a more stylish one. On the outside too, the Accord looks elegant and stylish while the Sonata focuses more on aggressiveness.

2023 Hyundai Sonata vs 2022 Toyota Camry

The Toyota Camry is as popular as the Sonata or the Accord in this segment. Moreover, the Camry brings a feeling of hybrid and fuel efficiency with it as well. However, it is almost similar in terms of performance and fuel economy numbers when compared to its rivals. When compared to the Sonata, the Camry holds its own with its exterior design but loses out in terms of interior design and appeal. The cabin space is commendable nonetheless.

2023 Hyundai Sonata vs 2022 Kia K5

The Kia K5 is nearly a mechanical twin of the Hyundai Sonata since it carries a similar powertrain to the latter. On the styling side, the K5 does a better job of looking sane while flaunting its modernity. On the inside too, the design of the cabin is better than what you’d find inside the Sonata. Overall, the K5 stands as a slightly better option among the two.

Final Verdict
8.0/10

If you’re least bothered about the styling of the Sonata’s exterior, the sedan is quite worthy of your money. The multiple powertrain options make it a worthy competitor. The sedan doesn’t compromise on performance or ride quality, and it manages to deliver some decent fuel economy ratings too.

Moreover, the safety aspect of the car is simply outstanding, with top-notch safety scores and a generous list of ADAS technologies on offer as standard. However, if you are willing to wait till winter and spend a few grand more, then we think the Sonata 2024 model would make a better choice.

This is the 4th Hyundai Sonata hybrid I have owned. It is loaded with safety features that are options on other cars. It's fun to drive, responsive and great on gas. Very comfortable seating and plenty of trunk room

              2024 Sonata

Pros - ["*Automated Features, *Gas Savings, *Bluetooth Connectivity and *Ride Comfort.", "*Electronic Features"]

Cons - ["*Rear Trunk Button, *Rear Seat Accommodations and *Seat Fabric.", "*Transmission Buttons"]

The 2024 Sonata is an excellent upgrade from previous models, with improved performance and better gas mileage, along with improved Safety features. There are some improvements that should be considered such as interior design and quality, rear trunk latch placement and including transmission control.
