Overview

Hyundai plans to launch a full fleet of electric vehicles under the Ioniq name which would function as a sub-brand from Hyundai. This is a similar name as Hyundai already has the Ioniq family car in the market, but it was a standalone vehicle that would now be followed by a few more options to join the all-electric family. The 5 is a compact crossover and would be the first one to hit the road. It looks like a classic hot hatch design with a touch of modernization giving the Ioniq 5 a distinct and eye-catching look.

Buying Advice

Amongst the three trim levels available, the most expensive and top-of-the-line SE trim will be our go-to choice. While it uses a similar powertrain setup with optional RWD and AWD configuration as the other trims, the SE adds better features to the EV with options of heated seats, more infotainment features, and an ultra-charging facility.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

It packs 800-volts of operating voltage, however, the battery has a smaller usable capacity. Moreover, it will come in three trims and with two power options. Inside it has a tech-centric interior and eco-friendly materials. Hyundai plans to bring out up to 23 electric vehicles by 2025 starting with the Ioniq 5.

Features
8.0/10

Although there isn’t much of a revelation about the features and packages, we do know that the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 will be offered in three trims namely SE, SEL and Limited. We are expecting that the Ioniq 5 will be loaded with a plethora of features and Hyundai is planning to launch the first In-vehicle payment system too.

There are no official figures from EPA as of now for the range of the Ioniq 5. Hyundai has however released their figures for the overall range that would be offered by the different battery packs available with the Ioniq 5. The standard variant with the 58 kWh battery and RWD would provide an overall range of up to 240 miles, says Hyundai.

Step up to the bigger 73 kWh battery with the RWD setup and you will get an impressive 300 miles of range. When plugged in the DC fast charger it provides a range of up to 68 miles in 5 minutes of charging and can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in around 18 minutes.

The standard battery in the Ioniq is smaller than the one available in the other cars but it provides almost equivalent range and with the bigger battery it is expected to offer a range of up to 300 miles matching the total range of the Mach-E and long-range Model Y.

Interior
8.0/10

The Interior of the Ioniq 5 is tech-savvy and boasts a minimalist design. It uses eco-friendly materials to further improve the quality of the interior and make the car even more environmentally friendly. While the car has a low stance, when you step inside you will find that the seating position is quite high, and gives an excellent view of the road ahead, which contradicts the sporty and low design of the exterior. The big windows and doors mirror offer better outside and surrounding visibility around the car.

It has two screens sitting together on the dashboard, one which works as the gauge cluster and displays all the driver information and is placed right in front of the driver, and the second screen placed just beside works as the infotainment unit. The materials used inside do not shout luxury, but are decent. There is a bit of plastic feel around the cabin especially with the 2-spoke steering wheel and in the dash. Overall it is a decent interior with ample space and would keep the occupants happy.

Tesla comes with a small frunk or trunk in the front which increases the overall space and the others also have a decent amount of cargo space, which is something absent in the Ioniq 5 and as of now there is no information with regards to the dimensions of the interior but it will be better in terms of cabin space than the ID4 due to the bigger size.

2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5: Infotainment and Connectivity

Inside the Ioniq 5 comes with two 12-inch screens placed side by side where one works as the gauge cluster placed in front of the driver the latter works as an infotainment screen. The gauge cluster is fully customizable and can be set up according to the comfort of the driver.

The center screen works as the infotainment display and just like other EV’s it is technologically advanced and performs most of the functions of the car, and also displays some vital safety information.

Some distinct infotainment features of the Ioniq 5 are:

  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration
  • Advanced Voice Recognition technology
  • Augmented reality information display on the windscreen
  • Premium Bose audio sound system in the higher trims

Exterior
9.0/10

The design of the 5 is unique because it comes from Hyundai which is not a brand that makes the best looking or aesthetically striking cars, but 5 stands a class apart. It has somewhat of a retro hatchback look to it rather than being a bulky SUV which it is meant to be. The retro look comes with a touch of modernization all around with LED lights, and sharp edges. The doors are big which allows for better ingress and egress.

Coming to the rear, it resembles the look of a DeLorean. Unlike other crossovers of the day, the rear windscreen wiper is absent as Hyundai says that the roof and windscreen are designed in a way that rainwater is pushed off with help of the airflow and slope of the windscreen. But this only works when the car is moving at a considerable speed. The Ioniq 5 overall is a striking-looking car and something that Hyundai has given many efforts into and they paid off well.

The Ioniq 5 has the longest wheelbase, and how it uses that extra space is yet to be figured out until the official interior figures come out. It is also the lightest of all, and this would easily explain the better performance even with a smaller battery pack than the rest. Some notable exterior features of Ioniq 5 include:

  • 20-inch wheels with vortex design
  • LED headlights with V-shaped DRL’s
  • Solar roof

Safety
9.0/10

The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq has a futuristic approach towards every dimension of the car, be it design, interior and most importantly the safety and Driver-assistance tech. The Ioniq 5 offers the advanced Level 2 autonomous drive mode called Highway Driver Assist 2, which assists the driver in shifting the lanes and can drive itself. Some major features include:

  • Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist
  • Intelligent Speed Limit Assist
  • High Beam Assist
  • Highway Driver Assist 2

Final Verdict

The 2022 Ioniq 5 will roll out on the roads somewhere around the fall of 2021. It would be a debut vehicle for the Ioniq sub-brand so it has a lot to prove. So far it has checked quite a few boxes to get in the good books with its distinct styling, comfortable interior with a minimalistic design, two different battery packs, power options, and drivetrain options, something which is not seen in a lot of EV’s of the day. Add to that the affordable price tag and trims indicate that Hyundai has kept a lot in mind while designing and building of the Ioniq 5 as it seems to have something in store for everyone and would surely be worth what you pay for it.
