Overview

Belonging to the compact SUV segment, the 2022 Tesla Model Y Long Range carries some of the qualities of a true electric vehicle. Starting off at an MSRP of $65,990 and going all the way up to $69,990 for the performance variant. The Tesla Model Y offers you 2 trims to choose from. For the price, it competes with the Mustang Mach E, the Audi Q4 E-Tron, and the Jaguar I-Pace. Not all trims are built equally though, as with 2 powertrain options available, the choice between trims gets a little more exciting. The base trim offers you a dual-motor setup. With a power output of 384 horsepower and 376 lb-ft of torque, capable of achieving a 0-60 time of 4.8 seconds from a setup. With this, you get an 80.5 kWh battery rated for 330 miles of range. The second powertrain here is a dual motor setup rated for 470 horsepower. It manages a 0-60 of 3.6 seconds. The battery here is 80.5 kWh, getting a range of 303 miles.

Buying Advice

Tesla has successfully captured a huge share of the EV car market with its efficient Model Y. Thanks to Tesla’s Expansive supercharging network and good real-world range, the Model Y cements its reputation as a nothing but one-dimensional hugely compromised and strangely popular EV. However, rivals like Q4 e-Tron bestow a much more comprehensively refined and joyful ownership experience along with a much more affordable price tag making Model Y a hard-to-recommend car

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The Tesla Model Y tried to capitalize on the red-hot success of the Model 3, but the all-electric crossover is more fizzle than sizzle- Car and Driver.

The 2022 Tesla Model Y is surely one of the engineering assets but its J.D.Power Consumer rating of just 78/100 could be a matter of concern for a few. Though it has a plethora of safety units and an impressive blend of performance and range, the quality and reliability still needs a visit for this pinnacle. The quality and reliability score of 73/100 can be considered as ‘Average’.

Coming on the maintenance, the Tesla Model Y 2022 costs you nearly $2,749 for the first five years. While the depreciation of resale value could be expected to be $37,615 after 5 years of operations. Similarly, the charging cost, insurance and repairs will cost you $5,560, $11,090 and $2,734 over the five-year ownership period. On the whole, the 'Cost-to-Own’ 2022 Model Y can be considered as “Average”.

Features
7.0/10

There are significant pros and cons when it comes to the Model Y's technology features- Edmunds

The Tesla Model Y 2022 comes in two trims, namely the Long Range and Performance. The Long Range comes at a cost of $65,990, and the performance trim comes at $69,990. All of these trims come with an option of a 1-speed direct-drive that is mated to the motors present on both axles. The powertrain installed in the 2022 Model Y is responsive and ultra-smooth given that there are minimum power losses from its transmission. Both the Performance and Long Range models offer a standard warranty of 4 years / 50,000 miles, while the battery and drive unit are covered for 8 years / 120,000 miles.

The Long Range differs from the Performance in seating capacity; an optional offering in the Long Range trim; plenty of range offered in both trims, but the Long Range triumphs in this factor; and these two trims come with cutting-edge tech infotainment and DAS, which distinguishes the model from the competition. Although at present it only includes summoning mode and automatic lane change on highways. But the present self-driving capability supports upgrading to complete self-driving capability and will be made available in the future through O.T.A.

It's 300-plus mile range is more than sufficient for most buyers as long as you're driving conservatively- Edmunds

The MPGe ratings of the Tesla Model Y 2022 remains the same as the powertrain has been carried over from last year. But in terms of driving range, the 2022 Tesla Model Y range still holds the crown for being the best of 330 miles on the Long Range model and 303 miles on the Performance model. As for the MPGe figures, the 2022 Model Y will offer 127 MPGe in the city, 117 MPGe on the highway, and 122 MPGe combined.

The rival cars are nowhere close to the Model Y in terms of MPGe figures as it beats the Mustang Mach E by 83 miles. With a full charge, the Model Y has the potential to complete 326 miles in one go, which is approximately 40% more than some of its rival cars. The closest at the moment you have is the Audi Q4 e-tron with 280 miles of the claimed range, followed by Ford Mustang Mach-E and Jaguar I-Pace.

Interior
6.0/10

The Model Y's cabin is spacious, with lots of headroom and legroom for all occupants- Edmunds

The 2022 Tesla Model interior follows a very futuristic approach in its design. The cabin is very clean, minimalistic, and is devoid of any physical controls. This year didn’t undergo any major changes as this model is very new in the market. That being said, change or no change the overall design of the dashboard and its seats although looks good but the fit and finish levels could be better for the asking price. Most of the functions inside the car are controlled by the large horizontal infotainment screen placed on the center of the dashboard.

The seats in general are comfortable and well-cushioned offering good support. Speaking of functionalities the Model Y offers heated and power-adjustable front seats along with heated rear seats. As for the seating space by default, you get seating for five but Tesla also gives you an option of adding third-row seats in the Long Range trim for $3,000 extra. The 30.2 cubic feet of cargo space is decent and the same can be extended to 76.2 cubic feet by folding the rear seats.

In this comparison, you will notice the Model Y is the most spacious on paper but based on real-world observations we feel the cabin space is better in the Q4 e-tron compared to the Model Y. While if we consider the cargo space on offer then the Mustang Mach-e is the overall most spacious and practical electric SUV here. In terms ofcargo space, the Tesla Model Y comes second with just 4.2 cu-ft of less space. The Audi Q4 e-tron and Jaguar I-Pace 9.7 cu-ft and  9.1 cu-ft of less cargo space than the Mustang Mach-E.

Coming on to the infotainment department of the Tesla Model Y, it is a 15-inch centrally stacked unit. From chilling and listening to music to watching your favorite content on Netflix or Youtube, the Model Y’s display screen can turn into a full-fledged entertaining device. Apart from controlling other functionalities inside the car. As for the audio, you get a 14-speaker sound system with media and music support via Bluetooth. Tesla also offers a USB-A port inside the glovebox with a 128 GB portable storage device as standard.

Some of the key interior features of the 2022 Tesla Model Y are:

  • Multifunction steering wheel with tilt and telescopic adjustment
  • Dual-Zone climate control
  • 8-way power-adjustable and heated front
  • Optional third-row seats
  • Simulated leather upholstery
  • Heated rear seats

Exterior
6.0/10

The styling of the Tesla Model Y is very similar to the Model 3 sedan but with an SUV body- KBB.com

The 2022 Tesla Model Y has remained untouched in the exterior part too. It will carry the same oval-shaped outlook that we get to see in the Tesla Model 3. The design may or may not appeal to the buyers as the looks are subjective. That being said, the exterior of this SUV has a lot of muscular edges over its surface, and the shape resembles more like a 2-door coupe. While at the rear, the signature tail-end of Tesla makes it look sassier. The 2022 Tesla Model Y exterior is very distinctive with a full tinted glass roof with ultraviolet and infrared protection.

Even LED fog lamps and power-folding, heated, auto-dimming side view mirrors are standard. The wheel sizes vary between 19-inch to 21-inch depending on the trim configuration. Dimensionally and mechanically the Model Y is more of a raised Model 3 and thus we don't see any major change in the dimensions figures here.  Tesla offers multiple exterior color options with the 2022 Model Y like Pearl White Multicoat, Midnight Silver Metallic, Deep Blue Metallic, Solid Black, and Red Multicoat.

The Ford Mustang Mach E is the winner here as it has a lower base curb weight of 4394 lbs and the ground clearance is relatively lower than the rest of the SUVs, giving more stability on the road. The wheelbase of the Ford Mustang Mach E is also 3.7 inches longer than the 2022 Tesla Model Y. However, the Tesla Model Y's higher ground clearance is appreciated over bad roads and speed-breakers.

Some of the key exterior features of the 2022 Tesla Model Y are :

  • 21-inch wheels
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Panoramic fixed glass roof
  • Power and heated side mirrors
  • Signature Tesla LED taillights

2022 Tesla Model Y vs 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E

The Model Y is not an economical measure when compared to its most obvious EV rival, the Ford Mustang Mach-E. But somehow, the Model Y has comfortable seating and interior design that are among the main requirements.

2022 Tesla Model Y vs 2022 Audi Q4 e-Tron

One of the most opulent and nice electric cars available is the Q4 e-Tron. It offers a high-end, spacious, and comfy interior.   However, the benefits of purchasing a Model Y include increased maximum range, better acceleration, and access to Tesla's Supercharger network that triumph over the benefits provided in the 2022 Audi Q4 Etron.

2022 Tesla Model Y vs 2022 Jaguar I-Pace

As compared to the Tesla Model Y, the 2022 Jaguar I-Pace is nearly $4,000 more expensive. However, the Tesla Model Y is more advanced than the I-Pace in terms of autonomous driving technology. The Tesla Model Y also offers better range and higher top speed than the Jaguar I-Pace. Also, Tesla's in-car entertainment options are much better than the I-Pace. The Jaguar I-Pace offer better performance than the Tesla Model Y.

Final Verdict
7.0/10

The 2022 Tesla Model Y is by far the best in its segment in terms of range and acceleration. Other than that, the cargo and its cabin space are also one of the best in its class. But its competitors like the Mustang Mach-E and I-Pace have a much better quality and comfort level than Model Y. Its long-term reliability is still questionable, but to date, its safety and efficiency are still the best in their class. Although for all this the Model Y does charge a premium over the rivals.
