Overview

Redesigned in the 2021 model year itself, the 2022 Hyundai Elantra will be a carry-over model. The 3-trim level configurations of SE, SEL, and Limited will remain as it is, starting at a base price of $19,850. Its 147 hp 2.0L I-4 engine with the standard FWD will also continue to retain its presence that is capable of returning an impressive mileage of 37 MPG overall. However, the newer 2022 Elantra N Line has been added to the lineup as well at an MSRP of $24,250 for enhanced 201 hp performance dynamics.

The Hyundai Elantra will be available with a cargo capacity of 14.2 cu-ft at max alongside a spacious interior. And Hyundai is offering to lease this 5-seater sedan at $249/month for 36 months with a $0 signing payment. The 2022 Elantra can also be opted for its Hybrid variant that returns a whooping mileage of up to 53 MPG. Regarding its rivals, Honda Civic, Kia Forte, and Toyota Corolla are a few of the names that are as worthy as Elantra in this segment.

Buying Advice

The SEL trim is the best one to have with an optional Convenience Package at $900 and Premium Package at $2,100. With these, one gets a 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation, Hyundai digital key, Bose Premium Audio, Power Sunroof and advanced safety values. Therefore, the expense of $24,100 at max for SEL configuration will allow one to experience the ambiance and appeal of the more expensive Limited trim.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2022 Hyundai Elantra is one of the most impressive small sedans money can buy - Autotrader

The 2022 Hyundai Elantra is coming with no changes from the 2021 model year. Its 37 MPG fuel mileage by the 147 hp 2.0L I-4 is pretty economical but that comes at the cost of a sluggish 0-60 MPH acceleration. The production belt will be resuming with the same SE trim at $19,850 that can be as expensive as $25,600 for the Limited configuration exclusive of the destination fee. However, it is the J.D.Power rating of 80 that stays consistent across the trim level and establishes its reliable persona.

The Hyundai Elantra tends to have a resale value of $11,931 for the SE trim and $15,460 for the Limited trim after 5 years of ownership. The maintenance cost of this sedan estimates to be $2,367 while the repairing might charge nearly $600 for the same time period. As far as its insurance expense is concerned, the calculations can be as high as $1,648 yearly. Since it has got a decent fuel economy, the fuel expense is limited to $6,000 only. On the whole, the total cost to own the 2022 Elantra comes out to be $25,244 at the least.

"The 2022 Hyundai Elantra stands out in traffic due to its unique styling, but underneath the sharply creased sheetmetal is a spacious and practical compact car." - Car And Driver

The 2022 Hyundai Elantra has been introduced in three trims: SE, SEL, and Limited. The base SE comes at an MSRP of $19,850 with which it gets features such as High Beam Assist and Automatic Emergency Braking for refined safe drive. The 8-inch high-resolution touch screen and cloth seating are other standard extras on the inside and 15-inch alloy wheels on the outside in this trim.

The SEL, being $1,250 more expensive than SE, costs a price of $21,100 that includes the Bluelink Connected Care and SiriusXM Satellite Radio over the available feature list of the base trim. It also receives 16-inch alloy wheels over the standard 15-inch ones. Fuel Economy

"The powertrain can stutter as the gas engine clutches in and out, but that's a minor trade-off for the soaring fuel economy ratings." - The Car Connection

The 2022 Hyundai Elantra offers the same fuel economy of combined 37 MPG that can be 43 MPG on the highways. And with its 12.4-gallon fuel tank, it inclines to have a range practicality of over 533 miles at its peak. The Elantra Hybrid meanwhile returns 53 MPG efficiency in single refueling.

Interior
5.0/10

The Elantra cabin is well-thought-out, with plenty of space and good outward visibility in the front row - Edmunds

The 2022 Hyundai Elantra has been organized to have a spacious practical interior with 3 color contrasts namely Black, Gray, and Melange with Gray as per trims. The SE and SEL configurations get no more than Cloth Seating while the Limited upgrades to Leather-upholstery. The Limited trim also receives heated front seats, black headliner, and alloy sport pedal exclusively for enhanced appeal.

The Hyundai Elantra gets a tilt/telescopic steering wheel as standard but dual-zone automatic climate control is integrated from SEL onwards. Regarding its cargo capacity, it has a trunk volume of 14.2 cu-ft that seems relatively decent. Also, one can even opt for the Convenience Package at $900 in SEL trim only where leather-trimmed steering and heated front seats are added for improving the overall stance.

As per dimensions, Elantra has a 1.1 cu-ft more cargo capacity than Corolla. In addition to that, it offers a 4-inch larger legroom and shoulder room than the latter. The Kia, meanwhile, has been designed to have 1.2 cu-ft larger cargo space than Elantra with a parallel seating cabin. Speaking of the infotainment unit, the 2022 Elantra has been replicated from its predecessor to continue with an 8.0-inch display audio in the SE and SEL as a standard.

The Limited trim, however, upgrades to 10.25-inch touch screen with navigation along with 8-Speaker Bose Premium Audio. One can also avail of this Bose 8-Speaker Bose Premium Audio in SEL configuration with the Premium Package costing $2,100 extra. Along with all these high tech-ends, the standard features do entail the likes of exclusive Dynamic Voice Recognition in the Limited trim. Some of the notable interior assets have been listed:

  • Leather-upholstery
  • Alloy sport pedal
  • Heated front seats
  • Bose 8-Speaker Bose Premium Audio
  • Dynamic Voice Recognition
  • 8.0-inch display audio

Exterior

"Despite these small gaffes, the Elantra represents a solid step forward." - Motor Trend

The 2022 Hyundai Elantra was resculpted in the 2021 model year, meaning it will be retaining the silhouette this year as well. It breezes its road presence with 7 exterior color options out of which the shade of orange comes specifically for the Limited trim. Also, the wide front sports the charm of sleek DRL LEDs along with Automatic Headlight Control and HighBeam Assist.

The Hyundai Elantra features the 15-inch alloy wheels for the SE trim which increases to 16-inch and 18-inch for the SEL and Limited respectively. On top of that, the Limited configuration does include the power sunroof and Full LED tail lights as standards too. But to opt for these in SEL, one has to choose Premium Package alongside.

As per data, the Elantra has a 1-inch longer wheelbase than both Kia Forte and Toyota Corolla but that hardly makes an impact on the handling. However, the 200 lbs heavier curb weight of Corolla than 2022 Elantra does allow the latter to have a comparatively smaller forward pull while braking. Otherwise, all the rivals are equally desirable in this parameter.

Competition

2022 Hyundai Elantra vs 2022 Honda Civic

The 2022 Honda Civic comes with more power and better performance, and even offers more cargo space than the 2022 Hyundai Elantra. However, the Hyundai Elantra has better interior space than the Civic and offers the best fuel economy figures among the competition, even with the higher trims. The Honda Civic is priced $2,000 more than the Elantra yet is justified to be preferred over the latter.

2022 Hyundai Elantra vs 2022 Kia Forte

The 2022 Kia Forte comes with the same amount of power and offers parallel performance against the 2022 Hyundai Elantra. But the Forte is more practical with its better driving range, thanks to its larger fuel tank. The Elantra maintains the ground with better MPG figures and a spacious cabin, however, costs $500 extra. On the whole, it has to be 2022 Elantra for its overall approach and latest updates.

2022 Hyundai Elantra vs 2022 Toyota Corolla

The 2022 Toyota Corolla offers a smaller engine than the 2022 Hyundai Elantra which does make lesser power. It even offers lesser fuel economy but a similar range due to a larger fuel tank. On the interior, the Corolla falls short in space in the back row and in trunk space. That being said, the Toyota Corolla costs $700 more than the Hyundai Elantra making the latter a much better proposition.

Final Verdict

The 2022 Hyundai Elantra is one fine attractive sedan with a long list of high tech-ends on the inside and outside. The performance, agility, and comfort have been blended in a perfect ratio at a reasonable price. The cabin roominess and fuel economy are also within the budget and practicality index. Hence, it can be one of the first choices in this class.

IT'S MY THIRD ELANTRA, SO GREAT CAR

Pros - ["LOW MAINTENANCE", "GREAT ON GAS", "VERY STYLISH"]

Cons - ["HYUNDAI BLUELINK SHOULD NEVER EXPIRE AND HAVE TO BE PAID FOR TO RENEW", "0000000000000", "0000000000000"]

I FEEL THAT HYUNDAI HAS COME A LONG WAY IN SAFETY AND STYLE. THEIR LINE OF VEHICLES HAVE IMPROVED TREMEMDOUSLY IN EVERY ASPECT POSSIBLE. THERE ARE A COUPLE SAFETY FEATURES THAT KIA OFFERS THAT WOULD BE WONDERFUL IN THE HYUNDAI. FOR EXAMPLE, THE MUCH LARGER SCREEN; WHEN YOU PUT ON YOUR TURN SIGNAL, THE LANE YOU ARE MOVING INTO SHOWS UP ON THE SCREEN.

              2021 Hyundai Elantra SE

Pros - ["GPS and Maps", "Radio and Satellite"]

Cons - ["Safety features not working", "Backup cam spazzing out"]

Lame Car and I don't like it and I rather have an electric car. Little sedan just not cutting it for me and I am upset that I cannot afford the car of my dreams. Hyundai is malfunctioning and I hate it
