Overview

One of the best-selling sedans in the history of automobiles, the 2022 Toyota Corolla is back for another stint with minor changes. The Apex Edition and blacked-out Nightshade Edition make their way back into the lineup, along with two new exterior color shades, Ruby Flare and Windchill Pearl. Offered in 8 trims but in only FWD configuration, prices for the 2022 Toyota Corolla sedan start at a base MSRP of $20,075.

Apart from the sedan form, the 2022 Corolla is available as a hatchback, as a Corolla LE hybrid sedan, and a compact crossover named Corolla Cross, which is set an MSRP of $22,195. There are two engines are on offer- a 1.8L inline-4 and a 2.0L inline-4. Both these powertrains offer sluggish acceleration but the fuel economy is excellent. The Corolla also offers a comfortable and ergonomic interior and is also known for its outstanding reliability and safety ratings. The Corolla competes against the Honda Civic, the Mazda 3, and the Hyundai Elantra.

Buying Advice

We would recommend you to go in for the SE trim as it comes with a punchier 2.0L engine. This trim also adds a leather steering wheel, 18-inch alloy wheels, and a 9-speaker JBL stereo. Hence, it seems worthy of its asking price. If you like to shift your own gears, choose the manual transmission.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The Toyota Corolla is a smart pick in the small sedan class- Edmunds

With an interesting exterior styling, the Toyota Corolla stands out in the segment. On the inside, the Corolla has always been at its top game. However, critics have objected to its sluggish powertrains and undersized trunk space. On the bright side, the Corolla is a fuel-efficient vehicle and delivers a good range for its gas mileage. Due to these points, the 2022 Toyota Corolla still survives the compact sedan market.

Like its affordable price tag, the Corolla's ownership costs are also affordable. Considering all kinds of extra costs such as repair, maintenance, fuel, insurance, etc., you can expect at least $4,840 as a minimum amount for the lowest trim level. Toyota's strong reliability factor helps the Corolla to stand out in its segment with high resale value in the used car market.

Buying Advice

We would recommend you to go in for the 2022 Corolla SE trim as it comes with a punchier 2.0L engine. This trim also adds a leather steering wheel, 18-inch alloy wheels, and a 9-speaker JBL stereo. Hence, it seems worthy of its asking price. If you like to shift your own gears, choose the manual transmission.

Features
8.0/10

The 2022 Toyota Corolla is a very good value- The Car Connection

The 2022 Toyota Corolla is mainly offered in five major trims. These include L, LE, SE, XLE, and XSE. The XSE trim is also available in Apex Edition while the SE trim comes in Apex as well as Nightshade Editions. The 2022 Corolla has a starting asking price of $20,070, without a destination charge of $1,025. Also, the SE variant is exclusively available with manual transmission too.

The Apex and Nightshade Editions add eye-catching exclusive aesthetics to the sedan. With a total trim count of 8, Toyota has nicely segregated features into each trim level. The base L trim doesn't come with any options. The $1,150 Convenience package adds rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, 16-inch alloy wheels, and push-button start to the LE variant.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

There’s not a thirsty Corolla in this lineup- The Car Connection

Fuel efficiency is one of the strong suits of the Toyota Corolla. The vehicle comes with a slightly lower-powered engine, which creates room for efficiency to grow. Speaking numbers, the Corolla offers an average MPG of 30 in the city, 38 on the highway, and 34 combined. These ratings are absolutely great for anyone looking to buy a workhorse.

When the 2.0L engine is paired with the CVT, you get similar ratings as mentioned above. However, opting for manual transmission drops the economy by just 1 MPG. With the added 13.2-gallon fuel tank, the range is shot up to 436 miles in its most efficient form while the lowest range delivered is 422 miles. Either way, the Corolla is a fuel-efficient sedan.

The Hyundai Elantra returns 4 MPG combined more than the Corolla and hence, it is crowned as the most fuel-efficient sedan. The Honda Civic's fuel estimates are similar to the Corolla but it is more efficient. On the other hand, the Mazda 3's fuel ratings are the lowest on the table but it isn't too bad.

Interior
6.0/10

The cabin is upscale and is solidly put-together- Edmunds

Inside, the Toyota Corolla's sleek details and soft-touch materials help deliver a perfect blend of practical and premium. The interior design is great and the color schemes line up perfectly as well. This means a comfortable and ergonomic interior with seating for five. Cloth upholstery is standard but leatherette seats are available. The front seats are roomy and comfortable with adequate support.

The steering wheel is leather-wrapped on top trim. Similarly, an 8-way power driver's seat and heated front seats are available on higher trims. The front row boasts an impressive amount of passenger space. The rear legroom offered is comparatively less than the competition but two adults can sit comfortably. Six-footers may find it uncomfortable sitting at the back but otherwise, headroom is good.

Except for the base L trim, every Corolla comes with an 8-inch touchscreen but a 7-inch screen is standard. The screen sits high on the dash but visibility is good. However, some people may complain that its graphics look dated. Connectivity features such as Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Amazon Alexa are standard. The system is easy to use thanks to its simple menu structure and a handful of physical buttons.

The cargo capacity of the 2022 Corolla isn't too generous in comparison to the rivals, but it can hold a decent amount of cargo if you wish it to. Pop the trunk and you get 13.1 cu-ft. of cargo space. That's enough space to store your groceries worth for a week. If you need more space, split-fold the rear seats in a 60/40 way.

Some other interior features are:

  • Leather, multi-function steering wheel
  • 8-way power driver's seat
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Power sunroof
  • Keyless entry
  • 7 & 8-inch touchscreen w/ smartphone integration

Exterior
6.0/10

There’s a certain family resemblance to the larger Camry and Avalon sedans- Kelly Blue Book

The exterior design of the Toyota Corolla is more interesting than the rivals. It is not a beauty queen like the Mazda 3 but it is bold. Lower, wider, and more aggressive, the 2022 Corolla's refined design speaks for itself with a host of details unique to each trim level. The triple curved LED DRLs really look cool and LED headlamps are standard throughout the range.

The wheels in the Corolla range between 15 and 18 inches and the models with 18-inch wheels get eye-catching wheel designs. The SE and XSE trim also add integrated dark accents throughout the exterior. The SE Nightshade Edition adds intrigue with its blacked-out grille and wheels, along with other accents that give the Corolla a sharp and unapologetic stance.

The Honda Civic sports a wider wheelbase than the Corolla. This translates to better rear passenger space. Despite being bulky, the Mazda 3's performance is better than the Corolla. The Hyundai Elantra shares the same ground clearance with the Corolla but it is slightly longer in length.

Some other exterior features of the 2022 Corolla are:

  • LED headlamps and DRLs
  • LED taillights
  • Heated exterior mirrors
  • Black grille
  • Dual exhaust tips
  • 15, 16 & 18-inch alloy wheels
  • Black window trim
  • Rear lip spoiler

Safety
9.0/10

The entire Corolla lineup also offers a host of standard driver-assistance technology- CarAndDriver

Buyers of the Toyota Corolla need not worry about the vehicle's safety as it is one of the safest sedans out there in the market. NHTSA gave the 2021 Toyota Corolla a 5-star overall safety rating while IIHS gave the designation of Top Safety Pick for its crashworthiness. This speaks for its build quality. Hence, the Corolla is a safe sedan for passengers.

Talking about safety features, the Corolla is equipped with the Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 which is a suite of the latest driver-assist features. As you climb the trim ladder, more features join the list. Apart from this, a set of 10 airbags are available in this sedan, which is pretty impressive.

Some of the main safety features are:

  • Forward Collision Alert
  • Automatic Emergency Braking w/ Pedestrian Detection
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Lane Keep Assist
  • Traffic Sign Recognition
  • Full-Speed Dynamic Cruise Control
  • Blind-Spot Monitoring
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert

Competition
8.5/10

2022 Toyota Corolla vs 2022 Honda Civic

The redesigned Honda Civic is slightly costlier than the Corolla. Unlike the Corolla, the Civic is available with an optional turbocharged engine that offers a punchy acceleration. The Civic also benefits from a better fuel economy, a roomier rear row, and better trunk space. Both the sedans earn top safety ratings too. Overall, the Corolla is a good car but the Civic is a better pick.

2022 Toyota Corolla vs 2022 Hyundai Elantra

The Hyundai Elantra is one of the most expensive cars in this class. It delivers better performance than the Corolla and it is the most fuel-efficient sedan in its segment. The cabin is well-trimmed with features and offers more rear-seat space than the Corolla. Both cars are loaded with a ton of safety features but the Elantra offers a bit more cargo space and is more value for money.

Final Verdict

As always, the Toyota Corolla is a solid choice of a car. It's safe, roomy, reliable and its great feature to price ratio is what makes the Corolla stand out in the segment. The engines in the Corolla are the real disappointment. They need an upgrade and fast but everything else about the Corolla is competitive and right on the money.

              Toyota corolla se

Pros - ["The 2 tone interior.", "The great gas mileage", "The move ability to make turns"]

Cons - ["The engine wants to stall", "The tire size is weird", "Rotation is evey 5000 miles instead of 3."]

The car handles good around corners breaks nicely smooth as a good radio system but overall there are some issues with it but I've learned to live with them and needs to have a better form of tire rotation and get sizes that you can afford instead of expensive sports tires

              Is the Corolla for me?

Pros - ["The quick response to the gas pedal", "The gas mileage."]

Cons - ["The sound of the tires while driving is a little loud.", "Tall people have a hard time fitting in the seat."]

Our Corolla is awesome. The best feature is the mileage, we get over 40 miles to the gallon. The response to the gas pedal is amazing. It is a smaller-sized coupe and has issues with tall people being comfortable. The ride is a little bumpy but the performance of this car is second to none. To top it off the price was reasonable compared to other new vehicles.
