Overview

The 2022 Toyota Sequoia remains unchanged from the 2021 model year. The 381 hp 5.7 L V8 continues to power the wheels in pairing with the RWD layout that can be upgraded to 4WD at an extra $3,225. However, it has added a new exterior color that replaces the two older ones. Moreover, the 6-level trim lineup of the SR5, TRD Sport, Limited, Nightshade Special Edition, Platinum, and TRD Pro begins at a price tag of $50,500.

The 2022 Sequoia has a towing capacity of 7,400 lbs and an interior cargo capacity of up to 120.1 cu-ft along with 15 MPG fuel economy. The lease deal of the Sequoia estimates to be $794/month for 36 months with a $3,444 signing payment considering the 12,000 miles annual range. Also, it has been released for sale against the likes of the other full-size SUVs such as the Chevrolet Tahoe, Ford Expedition, and the Nissan Armada.

Buying Advice

The base SR5 with Premium Package at $4,325 seems to be the most balanced proposition among all. The aforementioned combination brings the Premium Audio, Navigation unit, and Leather-trimmed seats among which the 10-way driver's seat is power-heated. Therefore, the overall expense of almost $55,000 at the max adds value more than the higher-priced trims.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

"No other Sequoia ever made came with such an exclusive color option, making this 2022 example very special indeed." - autoevolution

The 2022 Toyota Sequoia is a carry forward of the 2021 model year. The trim line has the SR5 as the base model at an MSRP of $50,500 that can be as expensive as $66,550 for the Platinum trim. The standard RWD configuration has been coupled with the same 381 hp 5.7L V8 engine that allows it to have less than 7 seconds 0-60 MPH acceleration. It can further be changed to 4WD with a $3,225 payoff for enhanced off-road traction. In the end, with a 78 J.D.Power Rating, it retains Toyota's reputation of reliability.

The 2022 Sequoia charges a $1,495 destination fee along with an insurance expense of $1,474 per year. In addition to that, the depreciation rate, as per 3-year ownership, is calculated to be somewhat $9,905. Another financial benefit one gets is that its yearly maintenance cost is $642 that is $140 cheaper than the average industry standard. Moreover, the additional investment might include the likes of packages like the Premium Package at $4,325.

6.3/10

Interior
8.0/10

"The Toyota Sequoia's cabin is antiquated and spartan." - cars.usnews

The interior of the 2022 Toyota Sequoia has been designed with an array of fabric and leather variants. The base SR5 has been clouded with Graphite Fabric which can be tweaked to its leather format in the Limited trim. While Platinum has the privilege of improving this to Red Rock & Black Leather Upholstery. Also, the 10-way driver and 8-way passenger power adjustable seats are integrated with heating and ventilation functions in this trim.

On top of that, the 2022 Sequoia rear gets Leather-trimmed second-row captain's chairs and power-reclining fold-flat third-row from the TRD Pro onwards. Moreover, it has been arranged to have 18.9 cu-ft of cargo space behind the third row that can be increased to 120.1 cu-ft once all the rear seats are folded. Apart from this, there are some additional accessories as well such as the cargo cover at $245 and the all-weather cargo mat at $100.

Safety
7.0/10

"Toyota's record for reliability and high resale value is definitely worth something." - Edmunds

The 2022 Toyota Sequoia has not been rated in its safety yet by the IIHS and NHTSA. However, it shares the same platform as that of the Toyota Tundra that has a 4-star NHTSA and a "Moderate" IIHS safety rating. So, the Sequoia is expected to have the same safety ratings as well. To compensate for such a not-so-impressive rating, it gets plentiful of features in its Toyota Safety Sense P suite that are:

  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Blind Spot Monitor
  • Eight Airbags
  • Lane Departure Alert
  • Star Safety System

2022 Toyota Sequoia vs 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe

The 2022 Toyota Sequoia has been equipped with better acceleration and engine performance than the 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe. But the latter is slightly more practical in its seating space and its cargo space flexibility. The Tahoe does have more range reach than the Sequoia. On the whole, the Tahoe comes up with more value at its disposal.

2022 Toyota Sequoia vs 2022 Ford Expedition

The 2022 Ford Expedition is quicker than the 2022 Toyota Sequoia in the quarter-mile drag. The spaciousness inside the cabin and cargo capacity also favor the Expedition. However, the towing capacity falls short by some 1,000 lbs. But except for that, the Sequoia does not manage to outclass the Ford. So, it has to be Expedition between the two.

2022 Toyota Sequoia vs 2022 Nissan Armada

The 2022 Nissan Armada has better power performance and relative acceleration timing than the 2022 Toyota Sequoia. The same stays true for the range practicality as well. Even interior space management is superior in Armada. Therefore, Nissan gets the preference here.

Final Verdict

The 2022 Toyota Sequoia has performance and practicality bestowed on it. Be it comfort or convenience, it has decent standards in these regards. However, the rivals like the Armada and Expedition have a far better approach and appeal in this segment. So, one should prefer them before the Sequoia as of now.
