Overview

Being in the automotive industry for more than a century, Chevrolet still ranks among the top brand preferences when it comes to pickup trucks and SUVs. With the introduction of the Chevrolet Traverse in 2008, the brand spiced up the competition even further. The Traverse was launched as a fullsize crossover but changed its segment to the midsize crossover in 2018. After its upgrade, the SUV gets the latest C1XX platform underneath which it shares with other crossovers such as the Acadia and the Cadillac XT6.

Buying Advice

The base LS trim is recommended only if you are looking to carry 8 passengers at a time. However, the LT Cloth or the LT Leather makes the best value for the price tags. The reason is that you’ll get a handsome list of creature comfort and convenience features without the price going through the roof.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2022 Chevrolet Traverse received a significant design update while the upcoming 2023 model will be a carryover one. Powering the SUV will be the same 3.6-liter V6 motor that offers adequate grunt for everyday driving needs as well as highway cruising. Like the current model, the 2023 Traverse will be offered in five trim levels with the base price kicking in from $34,220. The SUV will be available in both FWD and AWD layouts. There will also be a more powerful RS trim like the current model which will get a smaller 2.0-liter turbocharged motor but it will be covered in a separate review. In its class, the Chevrolet Traverse competes with the GMC Acadia, the Kia Telluride, and the Honda Pilot.

Features
8.0/10

The 2023 Chevrolet Traverse will be offered in five trim levels, excluding the more powerful RS trim, with a starting price of $34,220. The base LS trim offers an impressive 8-passenger seating configuration along with other features such as standard wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, standard ADAS techs, and three-zone automatic climate control. Stepping up to the LT Cloth trim further adds more options for exterior colors, leather-wrapped steering wheel, wireless device charging pad, and captain's chair seats for the second-row passengers. The LT Leather trim gets leather seats, heated front seats and steering wheel, a power-operated liftgate, and a bigger and upgraded 8.0-inch infotainment system. The Premier trim offers some creature comfort and convenience features such as a hands-free liftgate and ventilated front seats with heated rear seats. The top-end High Country maxes out with a few additional features such as enhanced trailering equipment and a panoramic sunroof.

Release Date

The 2023 Chevrolet Traverse will be released in fall 2022 though no official dates have been announced by the brand.

Fuel Economy
6.8/10

The fuel economy is one area where the 2023 Chevrolet Traverse will disappoint the most. On average, the Traverse will return 18 mpg within the city limits while out on the highways, the number jumps to 27 mpg. The combined mileage is rated at 21 mpg. From a decent-sized gas tank of 19.4 gallons, the Traverse returns mediocre driving range numbers, both on the city and on highways.

The GMC Acadia takes advantage of its smaller powertrain and returns 22 mpg within the city limits and an impressive 29 mpg out on the highways. The combined mileage number stands at 25 mpg. It also offers the highest driving range numbers here despite having a similar-sized gas tank to the Traverse. The Kia Telluride and the Honda Pilot do a good job in this area and return almost identical fuel economy numbers. However, the Telluride falls short in terms of driving range due to its smaller 18.8-gallon gas tank.

Interior
9.0/10

The interior of the 2023 Chevrolet Traverse will remain untouched and it did become more appealing than the previous models. However, there are some interior panels that might give a budget-car-like feeling if you compare them with the rivals here. The dashboard design would remind you of the older models, especially due to the vertical design of the middle air-con vents and the steering wheel. However, the overall design now looks sharper than before and gets soft-touch treatment too. All three rows get more than adequate headroom and legroom along with shoulder room as well. The base trim and the LT Cloth trim do get cloth upholstery but the latter gets a leather-wrapped steering wheel along with creature comfort features such as a power-adjustable driver’s seat and second-row captain’s chair seats. Both the front and second-row seats offer commendable comfort levels while the third-row seats can accommodate adults with decent comfort too. The cargo capacity with all the seats up is superb at 23 cu-ft.

The GMC Acadia’s cabin looks and feels more premium than the Traverse’s cabin but the third-row seats are not as spacious as the Traverse. Moreover, the cargo capacity behind the third-row is meager at 12.8 cu-ft only. The Kia Telluride is way ahead of the GM twins when it comes to interior design which looks and feels more premium than the price suggests. Moreover, the Telluride gets a long list of standard features and offers a decent 21 cu-ft of cargo space behind the 3rd-row seats as well. The Honda Pilot’s cabin might look slightly dated like the Traverse’s cabin when compared to the Telluride, but it offers plenty of flexibility and practicality despite having only 16.5 cu-ft of cargo space with all the seats upright.

Some of the key interior features available with the 2023 Chevrolet Traverse include:

  • Three-zone automatic climate control
  • Power-adjustable driver’s seat
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • Heated front seats
  • Power adjustable front seats
  • Power adjustable steering wheel

How intuitive is the 2023 Chevrolet Traverse’s infotainment system?

The infotainment system of the 2023 Chevrolet Traverse will get a standard 7.0-inch touchscreen display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. Apart from these, the base trim also gets standard Wi-Fi as well. Climbing up the trim levels gradually adds navigation, a wireless charging pad, satellite radio, and an 8-inch high-definition infotainment display. The user interface is smooth and user-friendly while the screen is responsive to touch inputs, making the overall experience a good one.

Some of the most notable infotainment features available with the 2023 Chevrolet Traverse include:

  • 7.0-inch/8.0-inch touchscreen display
  • Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
  • Wi-Fi
  • Wireless charging pad
  • Satellite radio
  • Navigation

Exterior
5.0/10

Even though the Chevrolet Traverse was slotted into a slightly smaller, midsize crossover segment, it’s still bigger than most of its rivals in the segment. After the facelift for the current model year, the SUV got the Blazer’s front-end design which looks sleek and aggressive, especially due to the LED headlamp units. The front grille is bigger than before and is divided into two unequal parts with a slim upper part. The clamshell hood gets some strong character lines and the Premier trim adds some tasteful chrome exterior trim inserts such as chrome door handles and roof rails. The side profile gets a couple of creases on the doors while the fenders get a flaring-like design to retain the muscular appeal of the vehicle. The SUV is also the longest one here along with having the longest wheelbase too which translates to the acres of space inside the cabin.

The GMC Acadia almost nails the exterior design part as compared to the Traverse but has smaller dimensions than the latter. Moreover, it weighs less than the Traverse too. The Kia Telluride Kia hardly goes wrong in the design department of its vehicles, both for the interior and exterior. The Telluride impresses with its aggressive front-end design and a unique headlamp design as well. Moreover, the Telluride stands highest from the ground at 8.0 inches, making it more off-road friendly than the rivals here. The Honda Pilot has never been the tough-looking one in its class, and the latest iteration is no different. With a car-like front-end design, the Pilot looks more easy-going and sophisticated than the competitors here and has a decent ground clearance of 7.3 inches.

Some standout exterior features include:

  • Heated ORVMs
  • Fully automatic LED headlamps
  • Chrome roof rails and door handles
  • Sunroof
  • Fog lights
  • Power-operated and hands-free liftgate

Safety
7.0/10

The 2023 Chevrolet Traverse will not see any compromise in the safety department. The crash ratings for the 2023 Traverse aren’t available at the moment but we can consider the ratings of the current model for reference. The 2022 Traverse has been tested by the IIHS and it bagged some commendable ratings in a majority of the test parameters while the NHTSA has not tested the vehicle yet. As standard, the Chevrolet Traverse will get ADAS features such as forward collision warning with automatic braking, lane-keeping assist, and blind-spot monitoring with a rear cross-traffic alert system.

Some of the standout safety features include:

  • Forward collision warning with automatic braking
  • Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert
  • Lane keeping assist
  • 360-degree surround camera system(optional)
  • Adaptive cruise control(optional)

Competition

2023 Chevrolet Traverse vs 2022 GMC Acadia

The GMC Acadia has been the mechanical twin of the Chevrolet Traverse but the latter got a powertrain update which resulted in a downsize. The downsized powertrain lacks the punch and acceleration of the previously-standard V6 but bumps up the fuel economy numbers significantly. However, the Acadia’s cabin feels smaller than the Traverse’s cabin which can be a deal-breaker for some.

2023 Chevrolet Traverse vs 2022 Kia Telluride

The Kia Telluride has been giving the Traverse significant competition despite being a new entrant in the segment. The Telluride outshines the Traverse in terms of interior design and standard features list while offering better fuel economy numbers as well. In performance and cargo capacity aspects too, the Telluride trails the Traverse quite closely.

2023 Chevrolet Traverse vs 2022 Honda Pilot

The Honda Pilot has been a trusted people mover for quite some time now and eventually got better with the upgrades. The Pilot gives the Traverse solid competition in terms of performance and fuel economy while the latter takes the crown here in terms of exterior design and cabin space. The Pilot’s cabin is more versatile than the Traverse’s cabin though due to the multiple folding options offered by the seats.

Final Verdict

The Chevrolet Traverse should be your next vehicle if you’re in the market for a dependable family hauler with ample space and comfort. Moreover, the Traverse offers a generous amount of standard comfort and convenience features for the price while the standard ADAS features make it a compelling option. The cabin might feel slightly dated and budget-oriented for the price due to better designs offered by the peers, there’s no denying the practicality part. The Traverse also gets the cargo capacity part right with ample space even with all the seats in place.
