Overview

The current fourth generation of Chevy Silverado 1500 has been on sale since the 2019 model year and also did receive a midlife refresh just recently. On that, we see the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 continue over as a carryover for the 2023 model year with minor changes to its diesel powertrain for enhanced power and torque output. There's a slight price hike and the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado Regular Cab price now starts at $35,895 and competes against the likes of the GMC Sierra 1500, Ford F-150, and the RAM 1500

2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 for sale

The 2023 Silverado has already hit the market and is available for sale with a monthly payment of $588 for a 72-month tenure at 4.99% APR. Currently, there are no lease deals on offer for the Regular Cab models.

Buying Advice

Since we are stuck here with a single trim here, there is limited configuration options for the Regular Cab trim. However, we do get two engine options here from which the 2.7L turbocharged motor is our pick over the V8 owing to its higher payload capacity, similar tower rating, and better real-world fuel economy. The $1,555 Value package is also something we suggest opting for as it brings in a lot of features like power windows, keyless entry, cruise control, power door lock, power mirrors, rear window defogger, a trailer hitch, and hitch guidance systems.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

Available for sale only in its WT trim configuration, the 2023 Chevy Silverado regular cab is meant to be a workhorse. The 5-year cost of ownership for the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is also pretty affordable at around $50,387 ballpark. The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 reliability rating is also class-leading at 85/100 much ahead of the likes of the Toyota Tundra

Features
9.0/10

The 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab, as seen from the previous iterations of the fourth generation of trucks, will only be made available in the Work truck format. The only choices you would be making are with the two engine options, which are the 2.7L turbocharged inline-4 mill and the 5.3L turbo-diesel V8, placed at a price gap of $1,500 between them. While the base gets an 8-speed automatic, the V8 gets a newer 10-speed unit. You could also opt for an AWD configuration here, but the base prices, in this case, would be pushed up by almost $3500 to $4,500 depending on the powertrain chosen.

  • 17-inch steel wheels
  • Vinyl seat upholstery & rubber mats
  • Locking tailgate
  • 7-inch touchscreen w/Android Auto & Apple CarPlay
  • Bluetooth & USB

Fuel Economy
6.2/10

Even though the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab does come sporting a small 2.7L engine as standard, the fuel economy does not come out all that interesting. It manages a decent 20 mpg on a combined driving cycle, but on highways, the best it has been rated for is 22mpg, which honestly is a bit low considering the size of the engine. The 24-gallon fuel tank is decently big, but not enough to impress with its range, which yet again is far from what we have seen from the best in class. Opting for the V8 further brings down the economy figures to just 17 mpg in the city and around 18 mpg in the combined cycle.

Interior
6.2/10

Built to be a utilitarian truck from scratch, the insides of the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab are something we would tag robust rather than premier. The only premium amenity that we see it getting is a 7-inch Chevrolet infotainment system, which probably has the worst backup camera we have ever seen in recent times, and a semi-automatic (or so they call it) climate control system. Features like power windows, power mirror controls, and keyless entry are an option on this truck. Even though we are okay with Chevy leaving out premium stuff, we are not sure if we could stand by them leaving out basic amenities, especially with the base prices increasing with each model year significantly.

The Silverado and the GMC Sierra, both sharing similar bodywork, comes in as the roomiest trucks here owing to their bigger overall exterior dimension including the wheelbases. However, the GM twins, with their 89.10 cu-ft cargo, though appear as the most practical ones here initially, but a closer inspection does reveal them to be in their long bed configuration, which the Ford F-150 and the RAM 1500 Classic aren’t. Equip these two with their bigger bed options and you are looking at close to 75 cu-ft. on the RAM and almost 77.4 cu-ft on the Ford F-150.

Some standout interior features of the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab include:

  • 3.2-inch drive information screen (4.2-inch unit available)
  • Single zone manual/ semi-automatic climate control
  • 4-way manual front seat adjustments
  • 2-speaker standard audio system
  • Steering wheel-mounted audio controls

Exterior
6.2/10

The 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab will adorn more or less the same silhouette as the previous model year, with the revised cues that came in last year with the facelift. Being a barebones work truck, the overall styling is more utilitarian-looking than its luxury/family-oriented counterparts. As for that, you have to adjust to the non-body colored bumpers, door handles, mirror caps, and the bright silver-colored 17-inch steel wheels. You do get packages that boost the exterior looks with body-colored mirror caps, polished exhaust tips, and chrome bumpers, but with the asking price of over $1050, we really doubt if you would need it on what essentially is going to be a workhorse meant to take all the beating.

Safety
8.0/10

The 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab, essentially underpinning a ladder on frame chassis, does perform a bit underwhelming in crash safety tests. Though the big size might make it look safe, NHTSA only rates it 4-Stars in crash safety while the IIHS gives it an average ‘Good rating, with a ‘Marginal rating on driver side overlap and a ‘Poor rating for headlamps performance. Also, the active driver assistance features are also non-existent on the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular, Cab which requires you to opt for the $1090 Work Truck Safety Package and the $615 driver safety confidence package to bring in the entire suite of assistance tech.

Some of the standout safety features available with the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab include;

  • Rear vision camera
  • Tire pressure monitoring system
  • Automatic emergency braking (available)
  • Forward collision alert with pedestrian braking (available)
  • Rear cross-traffic alert (available)
  • Lane change alert with blind zone alert (available)
  • OnStar connected services (available)

Competition
8.5/10

2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab vs 2023 Ford F-150 Regular Cab

The Ford F-150 Regular Cab will be the most serious competitor to the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab here. Priced almost in the same neighborhood, the F-150 has always offered the best compromise of affordability, practicality, capability, and economy. However, the fourth generation Silverado 1500 Regular Cab does come out as the bigger, more powerful, and practical truck of the two in their standard guises, which gives it an upper hand here as far as work trucks go.

2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab vs 2023 GMC Sierra Regular Cab

The GMC Sierra 1500 is the slightly posher version of the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab, essentially sharing most of the hardware underneath the skin including the exterior dimensions. Apart from the availability of the standard bed option we don’t think there is anything that is working in the GMC’s favor, which can presumably make it the better work truck here. Sure it does look a bit upmarket when compared to the basic Silverado, but is it worth the 3 grand premium it commands over the Chevy for essentially the same functionality? We think not!

2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab vs 2022 RAM 1500 Classic Regular Cab

The RAM 1500 Classic straightway gets an advantage here for being the cheaper truck here with its base prices starting a nice $3,000 less than the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab. However, this price advantage comes with its own perks as you are basically getting a decade-old truck here with dated tech and looks with the RAM 1500. The RAM, in its standard avatar, is significantly less capable than the Silverado 1500 Regular Cab with a lower tow rating and payload capability. The RAM is also the smaller truck in both cabin and bed size no matter what configuration you opt for, compromising the overall practicality levels.

Final Verdict

As we already did mention in the overview, there is no stopping people from getting the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 series of trucks. Available in a wide range of trims and engine options, this name is one that has earned its place in the hearts of the people for quite some time now. Even though we are talking about the single cab work truck here, the Silverado 1500 is still one of the most practical ones out there. Even though we did call it out for being a bit barebones in tech and safety, most trucks in this category fall to this similar fault. So, even if the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab does come in at a slight premium over the competitors, we still think it’s worth the slight price bump.
