Overview

RAM ranks among the brands that nearly define the pickup truck genre in the industry. While Dodge was the one responsible for its inception, RAM trucks are sold with the RAM logo and nameplate only. During its initial years, the trucks sold with this name were compact and aimed at competing with similar capacity trucks from rivals such as General Motors and Ford. Dating back to the early 90s, RAM has become one the most sought-after truck makers in the industry owing to its impressive lineup of products. Much like its rivals, RAM now offers light-duty to heavy-duty versions of its trucks, and the RAM 3500 is among the best ones in its class.

With a base price of $46,780, the RAM 3500 will face rivals such as the Ford F-350 SuperDuty, the GMC Sierra 3500HD, and the Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD.

Buying Advice

The 2023 RAM 3500 Regular Cab will arrive with no major changes. Sitting on the upper tier of the lineup, the RAM 3500 is used extensively for carrying heavy payloads as well as towing heavy cargo items. The truck received the latest version of the UConnect infotainment system last year and this year, it gets an optional 12.0-inch digital gauge cluster that is reconfigurable along with a digital rearview camera system with side mirror integration. Powering the truck will be a massive 6.4-liter V8 that delivers a strong performance along with muscular towing and hauling capacities as well. With a base price of $46,780, the RAM 3500 will face rivals such as the Ford F-350 SuperDuty, the GMC Sierra 3500HD, and the Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD.

Features
2.0/10

The 2023 RAM 3500 Regular Cab body style will be offered only in two trim levels which are the base Tradesman and the Big Horn. The price for the base trim commences from $46,780 and gets features such as a locking tailgate, 18-inch steel wheels, a Class V tow hitch, and vinyl upholstery. The truck doesn't get any advanced safety tech as standard but can be equipped from the optional features list. The Big Horn carries a base price tag of $51,310 and gets a few improvements such as chrome trims for the exterior, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, power-operated and heated towing mirrors, and a trailer brake controller. The standalone features include Forward collision mitigation, adaptive cruise control, a 17-speaker premium Harman Kardon sound system, Cargo bed storage bins, and Dually setup at the rear axle.

Release Date

The 2023 RAM 3500 Regular Cab hit production back in October 2022, and we expect the truck to hit the roads by December 2022.

Engine and Performance
8.2/10

The 2023 RAM 3500 Regular Cab will get the same and massive 6.4-liter Hemi V8 that is quite the performer. In stock form, the motor pushes out a beefy 410 horsepower along with 429 lb-ft of torque. It is mated to an 8-speed ZF 8HP75-LCV automatic transmission which it received during the 2019 update. Both the motor and the transmission work in unison to deliver a strong performance both in the cities and out on the highways. Even though the truck takes a leisurely 8.4 seconds to hit 60 mph from a standstill, it shouldn’t bother you much since the powertrain can also tow as much as 24,100 lbs. Moreover, the truck has an impressive payload capacity of 4,280 lbs and the driveability remains mostly intact even under a full load.

The Ford F-350 SuperDuty is a decent performer in the class. It gets a slightly smaller 6.2-liter V8 and makes less power than the RAM 3500, but has a similar torque output though. In the towing and hauling department, it is just mediocre as compared to the RAM 3500, with a towing capacity of just 15,000 lbs along with a maximum payload capacity of 3,550 lbs. The GMC Sierra 3500HD is a solid performer against the rivals here and fares much better than the F-350. It gets a bigger 6.6-liter gasoline V8 under its hood and has a muscular torque output of 464 lb-ft. However, it makes a little less power than the RAM 3500 at 401 hp. While its towing and hauling capacities are at 20,000 lbs and 4,316 lbs, the former is lesser than what the RAM 3500 delivers. The Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD is the mechanical twin of the Sierra here, hence has identical power output figures along with both towing and payload capacities as well.

2023 RAM 3500 Regular Cab Ride and Handling

Big and burly pickup trucks always had a dark side where they delivered poor driving dynamics along with jittery and bouncy ride quality. However, the impressive and cozy ride of the RAM 3500 along with its pleasing driving dynamics are the two most important reasons for its immense popularity. While driving potholes, uneven surfaces, and minor speed breakers are easily gobbled up by the suspension, keeping the truck settled. The ride further improves significantly once the truck is loaded. When equipped with the 4WD layout, the truck can tackle bad terrains easily, demonstrating the robustness of its suspension setup.

2023 RAM 3500 Regular Cab Braking Performance

The 2023 RAM 3500 is quite hefty at 6,056 courtesy of that mammoth motor and the robust chassis. To stop all that heft in time, the truck is equipped with a pair of 14.2-inch rotors at the front along with 14.1-inch rotors at the rear. With this hardware, the truck stops completely from 60 mph within 140 feet. The brakes do feel sure-footed while driving and respond quite well during harsh braking scenarios as well.

The Ford F-350 SuperDuty gets a set of 14.3-inch rotors at the front and a similar 14.3-inch setup at the rear as well. Despite that, the sheer 6,717 lbs of curb weight take some time to halt from 60 mph. As such, the F-350 requires a long 163-feet stopping distance. The GMC Sierra and the Chevrolet Silverado have identical curb weight and brake hardware here. Both trucks have similar braking performance but the stopping distances aren’t known as of now. However, we expect them to perform on a similar level to the rivals it faces in the class.

Fuel Economy
2.0/10

Commercial vehicles, especially the big and muscular pickups, are exempted from EPA’s testing of fuel economy. However, several owners of such vehicles do resort to unofficial online forums to post their observations of their trucks’ fuel economy numbers. With those numbers around, the 2023 RAM 3500 Regular Cab is expected to return an average of 13 mpg only inside the city limits while highway drives will see somewhere around 17 mpg of average fuel consumption. The combined mpg is observed around 15 mpg but the massive 32-gallon gallon gas tank is the ultimate savior here. Within the city boundaries, the truck can cover up to 416 miles while on the freeways, you can drive over 500 miles on a single tank full of gasoline.

The Ford F-350 SuperDuty has mildly better fuel economy figures as per the owners. The average city mileage of the truck is around 14 mpg while highway mileage hovers around an average of 18 mpg. The F-350 has an even bigger gas tank of 34 gallons as compared to the RAM 3500 here and naturally, delivers more driving range on a full tank of fuel. The GMC Sierra returns slightly better fuel economy numbers than both the F-350 and the RAM 3500. On the plus side, the truck also gets a huge 36-gallon gas tank, resulting in a crazy 540 miles of average city driving range and close to 700 miles of highway driving range. The Chevrolet Silverado, despite being the mechanical twin of the Sierra, has more mileage per gallon than the Sierra. As such, the same 36-gallon gas tank offers a crazy 612 miles of city driving range and 828 miles of highway miles as well.

Interior
8.2/10

RAM trucks have garnered plenty of accolades not only for their capabilities and ride comfort, but also for better-than-average interiors as well. With the 2023 RAM 3500 Regular Cab, a similar story follows. While the entry-level Tradesman trim might seem too basic for its price, the overall build quality is superb but the locks and the windows are all manually operated. Stepping up to the Big Horn trim will get you power-operated accessories along with upgraded cloth upholstery and carpeted floor. The dashboard layout is quite convenient, especially from the driver’s seat and that dash-mounted gear selector knob is an excellent touch. The center stack gets storage cubbies along with two big cup holders and an armrest. The driver’s seat gets manual adjustments along with the same for the passenger seat too.

The Ford F-350 SuperDuty’s cabin design has started to look dated, especially when compared with the RAM 3500’s cabin. Even though it is more spacious on the inside of the F-350 than the 3500, the base model can be a turn-off. The GMC Sierra has a slightly better cabin design than its mechanical twin, the Silverado 3500HD but the interior dimensions are identical on both trucks. However, the General Motors twins truly impress with their cavernous cargo area.

Some of the key interior features available with the 2023 RAM 3500 Regular Cab include:

  • Vinyl upholstery
  • Manually-operated door locks and windows
  • Manual Air conditioning
  • Cloth seats and carpeted floors(Big Horn)
  • Power-adjustable and heated tow mirrors(Big Horn)
  • Power windows(Big Horn)

How intuitive is the 2023 RAM 3500 Regular Cab’s infotainment system?

Back in 2022, the RAM 3500 got a big update to its infotainment system. The 2023 3500 will see the same and latest UConnect 5 infotainment system with a standard 5.4-inch touchscreen display. The base model offers a few features only such as USB input, auxiliary audio input, and FM radio. The Big Horn trim gets the tasteful and big 8.4-inch touchscreen display along with additional features such as Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Bluetooth.

Some of the most notable infotainment features available with the 2023 RAM 3500 Regular Cab include:

  • 5.0-inch/8.4-inch touchscreen display with UConnect 5
  • Bluetooth
  • Apple CarPlay
  • Android Auto
  • FM radio
  • 6-speaker audio system

Exterior
8.2/10

On the outside, the 2023 RAM 3500 Regular Cab carries all its character and appearance. Right on the base trim, the front end of the truck looks quite imposing and intimidating even though both the front grille and the front bumper get a gray finish. The headlamp units are halogen for both the base and the Big Horn model. The wheels are standard 18-inch steel units but there is no option to upgrade to a bigger one though. On getting the dually set up for the rear wheels, the front wheels get a hub-style design. The Big Horn trim gets some tasteful chrome exterior trim which enhances the otherwise slightly dull look of the truck.

The Ford F-350 SuperDuty has a big and bold exterior appeal and inherits the handsome design of the F-150 as well. Even though it doesn’t look as intimidating or tough as the RAM 3500 here, the exterior design is good enough. The GMC Sierra 3500HD’s exterior design is louder than all the rivals here and it announces its presence everywhere it goes. The base trim’s front grille gets a blacked-out treatment but the huge headlamp units and the chrome trims clearly convey its premium image. The Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD has a toned-down design as compared to the Sierra. However, the vertical design of the headlamps and the massive front grille keeps it at par with the rivals here.

Some standout exterior features include:

  • 18-inch steel wheels
  • Locking tailgate
  • Keyless entry
  • Chrome exterior trim
  • Power-adjustable and heated tow mirrors
  • Trailer brake controller

Safety
2.0/10

The RAM 3500 hasn’t been crash-tested by both the IIHS or the NHTSA, hence its crashworthiness ratings aren’t available. None of the earlier models were tested either. Despite that, the truck comes with all the basic safety systems such as an antilock braking system, post-collision safety system, traction control, emergency brake assist, and engine immobilizer. From the optional list, you can further equip the truck with a few advanced driver assistance systems such as a forward collision mitigation system, adaptive cruise control, and a Surround-view camera system.

Some of the standout safety features include:

  • Post-collision safety system
  • Passenger airbag occupant sensing deactivation
  • Stability control
  • Traction control
  • Emergency braking preparation
  • Emergency braking assist
  • Tire pressure monitoring
  • Engine immobilizer

Competition

2023 RAM 3500 Regular Cab vs 2022 Ford F350 SuperDuty Regular Cab

The Ford F-350, as the name suggests, is the bigger and more capable version of the regular F-150 and packs in some decent capabilities too. However, the numbers aren’t adequate enough to give the RAM 3500 a tough time. While the F-350 is slightly better in the fuel economy part, its bigger gas tank along with more driving range numbers allows it to have an edge over the 3500. The F-350 is more spacious than the 3500 on the inside. The RAM 3500 delivers a way better ride comfort and driving dynamics. The RAM 3500 also has a better street presence as a truck than the F-350 as well.

2023 RAM 3500 Regular Cab vs 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Regular Cab

The Chevy Silverado 3500HD Regular Cab enjoys more popularity than the RAM 3500 in the market along with being offered with more body styles as well. In the performance department, the Silverado pumps out more torque than the RAM 3500 and has a better payload capacity while the latter has more power and towing capacity. The Silverado 3500HD also has another advantage over the 3500 with its more spacious cabin but the latter provides more quality and comfort.

2023 RAM 3500 Regular Cab vs 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD Regular Cab

The GMC Sierra 3500HD is the one to arrive first, and the Silverado is a toned-down version of the same. The Sierra 3500 has a brawnier exterior design, especially due to that massive grille and standard chrome trims. Exactly like the Silverado, the Sierra has more space on the inside and the overall design is slightly better than the Silverado, putting it on par with the RAM 3500’s cabin. The RAM 3500 still pulls ahead with its stronger towing capacity and a smoother ride.

Final Verdict
7.9/10

If you’re out looking for a capable truck that can do a lot more than your basic daily needs, the RAM 3500 would be an excellent option. The muscular towing and payload capacities will impress you instantly and the smooth ride comes as a boon. Moreover, the 3500 looks more intimidating and muscular than most of its rivals too and gets competent pricing too. The RAM 3500 can be an excellent alternative to the more popular options such as the Silverado 3500HD.
