Overview

Trucks have always played an integral role in supporting the economy of a majority of countries across the globe, even more so in the US. Starting with small pickup trucks, to meet the requirements of shoppers needing more payload and hauling capacities, the brands have come up with bigger versions of the smaller trucks as well. RAM trucks go way back to the early ‘90s but have shot to the top position in the pickup truck segment. RAM trucks' strengths include their impressive capabilities, comfier ride compared to a majority of their rivals, and well-equipped interiors with better-than-average comfort levels.

Buying Advice

The base Tradesman trim is recommended for fleet operators while the Big Horn is the only option if you wish to drive the truck by yourself. Furthermore, we would recommend having the forward collision mitigation system and adaptive cruise control for better safety while out on the roads.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The RAM 3500 sits on the upper part of the lineup and sees usage for heavy hauling and towing duties. The 3500 is in its fifth-generation model now since 2019 while the 2022 model will see a few updates. The most important upgrade would be the addition of the latest UConnect 5 infotainment system that will be available right from the base trim as well. The Regular Cab configuration of the RAM 3500 is offered with two lower trims only, and it doesn’t get any advanced driver assistance techs as standard either. The price of the 2022 RAM 3500 Regular Cab will commence from $46,315, and it will rival the likes of the Ford F350 SuperDuty Regular Cab, the GMC Sierra 3500HD Regular Cab, and the Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Regular Cab.

Features
2.0/10

Even though the 2022 RAM 3500 is offered in a total of five trim levels, the Regular Cab configuration is only offered with the base Tradesman and the Big Horn trims only. Being a couple of trims on the lower end, the truck doesn't get many features as standard, however, the handsome list of standalone features is there to take care of your needs. The base Tradesman trim starts at a price tag of $46,315 and gets standard features such as manual air conditioning, manual door locks, manual windows, lockable tailgate, cruise control, a 5-inch infotainment display, 18-inch steel wheels, and a Class V tow hitch. To make the barebone feeling of the Tradesman a little better, the upper Big Horn trim replaces the manual operation of the door locks and windows to power operated units and further adds cloth upholstery for seats, carpeted floor, a bigger 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment display, and chrome trims for the exterior of the truck. Even though the truck doesn't get any ADAS techs as standard, a few of them can be added through the standalone options such as adaptive cruise control and forward collision mitigation.

Fuel Economy
2.0/10

EPA doesn’t rate the fuel efficiency of commercial vehicles so the official mpg ratings for the 2022 RAM 3500 Regular Cab aren't available. However, numerous owners have shared their takes and feedback on the real-world fuel consumption of the truck. In the city limits, the RAM 3500 returns an average of 13mpg while highway driving sees the number rising to 17mpg. Thankfully, the truck gets a big 32-gallon gasoline tank that allows it to offer over 400 miles of city driving range along with over 500 miles of highway driving range as well.

According to the collective information, the Ford F350 SuperDuty is marginally less fuel efficient than the RAM 3500 Regular Cab but it gets a bigger 34-gallon gas tank. Hence, it offers more driving range than the RAM 3500. Despite having similar powertrains and output figures, the General Motors twins offer different mpg figures as per the users. The GMC Sierra 3500HD is marginally less fuel efficient than its corporate counterpart, the Silverado 3500.

Interior
8.2/10

Interiors have been one of the USPs of RAM trucks, and the 2022 RAM 2500 Regular Cab’s cabin is an ode to it. There is nothing fancy about the cabin though but the overall fit and finish levels along with the comfort levels are impressive. The base Tradesman trim gets vinyl seats and a non-carpeted floor but the quality of the materials is excellent. The dashboard has a driver-friendly layout with all the controls placed within the reach of the driver. The driver’s seat gets manual adjustments on both the Tradesman and the Big Horn trims while the power adjustments are reserved for the higher trims such as the Laramie. The headroom and legroom are more than adequate for both the driver and the passenger, even tall occupants won’t find it difficult to settle inside the cabin as well. The big windows and the door glasses provide unhindered all-around visibility but the manual operation of the side windows, as well as the rear glass, can pose some inconvenience while driving.

The Ford F350 SuperDuty’s cabin has a robust build with a tough-looking design. However, its dashboard layout might seem a bit too busy due to the numerous buttons in place. Both headroom and legroom are more inside the F350’s cabin as compared to the RAM 3500’s cabin. The GMC Sierra 3500HD’s cabin has some similar styling cues from the smaller trucks of the brand but there are oodles of headroom and legroom inside. Moreover, the storage capacity is way better than what you’d get in both the RAM 3500 and the F350.

Some of the key interior features available with the 2022 RAM 3500 Regular Cab include:

  • Vinyl seats and floors
  • Manual locks and windows
  • Manual Air conditioning
  • Cloth seats and carpeted floors(Big Horn)
  • Power-adjustable, heated tow mirrors(Big Horn)
  • Power windows(Big Horn)

How intuitive is the 2022 RAM 3500 Regular Cab’s infotainment system?

As standard, the 2022 RAM 3500 Regular Cab will get the updated, UConnect 5 infotainment system but with a smaller, 5-inch touchscreen display. The Big Horn trim gets the bigger, 8.4-inch touchscreen display with the latest version of the user interface. Being on the lower side of the trim lineup, the Tradesman doesn't get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. But the bigger infotainment unit adds some useful features such as satellite radio, USB ports, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Additionally, you can opt for the premium 17-speaker premium Harman Kardon sound system for a wholesome listening experience.

Some of the most notable infotainment features available with the 2022 RAM 3500 Regular Cab include:

  • 5-inch/8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment display with latest UConnect 5 software
  • Apple CarPlay
  • Android Auto
  • USB connection with external media control
  • Satellite radio
  • 17-speaker Harman Kardon audio setup(optional)

Exterior
8.2/10

On the outside, the 2022 RAM 3500 Regular Cab looks quite intimidating but the gray-colored exterior trims on the base Tradesman trim might be too simple. However, that doesn't put a dent in how mean the truck looks from the front. As standard, the truck gets 18-inch steel wheels but the design changes to a hub-style setup once you choose to go with the dually setup. The headlamp and the tail lamps are halogen units while the LED units are reserved for the higher trims such as the Laramie where the Regular Cab body style isn’t available. The rear tailgate gets a locking function in the basic as well as the Big Horn models while the latter also gets chrome exterior trims for an enhanced appeal.

The Ford F350 SuperDuty looks like a bigger and bolder sibling of the smaller F-150 but the exterior dimensions are simply huge. It doesn’t look as intimidating as the RAM 3500 but looks appealing though, especially with the two-bar front grille design. The GMC Sierra 3500HD has a slightly exaggerated front end design, especially due to the chrome inserts but it enhances the premium image of the truck. The Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD gets a slightly toned-down appeal than the Sierra 3500, but the big front grille and the vertically-stacked headlamp units give off a distinct character of the truck.

Some standout exterior features include:

  • 18-inch steel wheels
  • Locking tailgate
  • Keyless entry
  • Chrome exterior trim
  • Power-adjustable and heated tow mirrors
  • Trailer brake controller

Safety
2.0/10

The safety aspect of the 2022 RAM 3500 Regular Cab hasn’t been assessed by both the NHTSA or the IIHS and none of the previous models were put through the tests either. The 2022 model of the truck gets practically no advanced driver assist techs as standard. However, the truck is equipped with all the possible basic safety techs such as traction control, post-collision safety system, stability control, emergency braking assist and preparation along with engine immobilizer. From the standalone list, you can equip the truck with Forward collision mitigation system and adaptive cruise control.

Some of the standout safety features include:

  • Post-collision safety system
  • Passenger airbag occupant sensing deactivation
  • Stability control
  • Traction control
  • Emergency braking preparation
  • Emergency braking assist
  • Tire pressure monitoring
  • Engine immobilizer

2022 RAM 3500 Regular Cab vs 2022 Ford F350 SuperDuty Regular Cab

The Ford F350 SuperDuty is the big and more powerful brother of the regular F-150 and it matches up with the RAM 3500 in terms of performance and towing capabilities. The F350 is marginally better in terms of fuel efficiency than the RAM 3500 but gets a bigger gas tank, offering more driving range. On the inside, the F350 is bigger than the RAM 3500 both in terms of headroom and legroom, but the latter fares better in terms of comfort and overall build quality. On the exterior part, the RAM 3500 has a bigger-than-life appearance with an intimidating design as well.

2022 RAM 3500 Regular Cab vs 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Regular Cab

The Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Regular Cab is a more popular truck than the RAM 3500 and offers more options for configuration as well. In terms of performance and capabilities, the Silverado 3500HD is slightly better than the RAM 3500 when equipped with its basic powertrain but loses out in the ride quality aspect. In terms of exterior design and road presence, the RAM 3500 is slightly bigger than the Silverado 3500HD in flesh, but the on-paper dimensions are nearly identical. On the inside though, the Silverado 3500HD is simply much bigger than the RAM 3500.

2022 RAM 3500 Regular Cab vs 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD Regular Cab

The GMC 3500HD is the more premium and slightly pricier mechanical twin of the Silverado 3500HD. Moreover, both the trucks share the same basic powertrain along with optional powertrains as well. On the inside, the Sierra 3500HD is similarly spacious to the Silverado but has a better overall appearance and design, making it quite competent with the RAM 3500. However, it shares the same jittery ride as the Silverado, and is beaten by the RAM 3500 easily as well.

Final Verdict

The RAM 3500 Regular Cab makes a solid option in its class since it gets almost everything covered. Moreover, the fantastic ride quality of the truck makes it preferable to its counterparts from Ford and General Motors. In terms of pricing, the RAM 3500 gets aggressive price tags. The brand also offers a long list of standalone additional features to better equip the truck even in its basic form that also includes a few advanced driver assistance techs as well. Overall, the RAM 3500 can be opted over its rivals such as the Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD.
