Overview

Pickup trucks came to life to make towing and carrying loads easier for people with lesser requirements. With the evolution of pickups, came along the performance and off-road specced versions of the regular models and allowed shoppers to own one to have a masculine road presence. With the latest version of the RAM 2500, you can do just that and a lot more. The RAM 2500 has been in its fourth-generation model for more than a decade now and hasn't received many mechanical upgrades yet. Despite the lack of design updates, the truck still looks quite tough and intimidating when compared to its main rivals in the class.

Buying Advice

We would recommend the Big Horn trim due to the excellent value for the money it brings to the table.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2022 RAM 2500 arrives with a handful of updates but a majority of them are for the other body styles. The Regular Cab gets a couple of new grille designs at the front along with a new Harvest Sunrise paint option. Moreover, the truck now gets the intuitive Uconnect 5 infotainment system as standard across the trim levels as well. Powering the 2022 RAM 2500 Regular Cab is a standard V8 motor that puts out some solid power and torque figures. The price for the base model of the 2022 RAM 2500 will start at $44,570, making it slightly pricier than a majority of its rivals with a similar body style. In its

Features
7.0/10

The Regular Cab body style is only offered with the Tradesman and Big Horn trims of the 2022 RAM 2500, and the price for the base Tradesman commences from $44,570. At this price tag, the truck gets some useful features such as a 7-pin wiring harness, a Class V tow hook receiver, a tilt-adjustable steering wheel, and cruise control. On the downside, the cabin might feel too basic due to the manual air conditioning and manual hand-cranked windows and door locks. The Big Horn takes care of almost all the inconveniences of the base model with power-operated windows and door locks along with adding techs such as a bugger 8.4-inch infotainment system, heated ORVMs, remote keyless entry system, RAM Connect connected services, and trailer brake controller.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

The EPA doesn’t rate the average fuel consumption of commercial vehicles due to the exemptions. Moreover, you’ll probably lose your sleep after seeing the official numbers. According to several owners of the RAM 2500 Regular Cab, the average city mileage of the truck is at 12mpg while out on the highways, the number climbs to 18mpg. To take care of the driving range numbers, the truck gets a big 32-gallon fuel tank that allows the vehicle to cover close to 400 miles inside the cities and over 550 miles out on the highways.

The Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Regular Cab, according to real-world scenarios, has a near-to-similar city mileage to the RAM 2500 but both its highway and combined numbers are lesser than the latter. The Silverado 2500HD makes up for the deficit with its bigger 36-gallon gasoline tank that allows the truck to cover 468 miles when driving inside the city limits and 540 miles while out on the highways. The Ford F250 Super Duty Regular Cab is the most fuel-efficient one here in the cities and has slightly better numbers for highway and combined as compared to the Silverado 2500HD. The GMC Sierra 2500HD has identical average fuel consumption numbers along with similar driving range numbers to the Silverado 2500HD.

Interior
8.9/10

In the recent past, RAM trucks have been becoming more preferable to shoppers looking for a practical and capable truck that is quite comfortable too. Staying true to the expectations, the 2022 RAM 2500 Regular Cab also gets a comfy cabin too. The base Tradesman trim might feel a bit too basic due to the hand-cranked windows and the manual door locks, but the overall fit and finish levels are excellent, and so are the comfort levels as well. The headroom and legroom are more than adequate for both the driver and the co-passenger and the seats offer commendable cushioning too. With the Big Horn trim, the truck gets power windows and door locks along with upgraded cloth upholstery instead of the basic vinyl upholstery of the base trim. The seating position is quite high and the overall visibility is excellent from the driver’s seat. The driver gets an analog instrument cluster with a small digital display in between the dials.

The Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD’s interior has finally been scaled up a bit while keeping the basics intact and the layout quite driver-friendly. The dashboard-mounted controls and the infotainment screen are placed on a single layout-type design for easy accessibility and the whole setup is slightly aligned towards the driver’s seat. The gear-selector stick is also column mounted for added convenience as well. The Ford F250 Super Duty Regular Cab’s cabin looks quite dated now but the thick interior panels and plenty of storage spaces inside, have kept the interior practical to date. The GMC Sierra 2500HD Regular Cab’s interior design bears a strong resemblance to the Silverado’s cabin, but the former has a slightly more premium feel to it.

Some of the key interior features available with the 2022 RAM 2500 Regular Cab include:

  • Tilt-adjustable steering wheel
  • Front bench seat
  • Vinyl upholstery
  • Power windows and locks
  • Cloth bench seat
  • Upgraded driver information display(optional)
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control(optional)

How intuitive is the 2022 RAM 2500 Regular Cab’s infotainment system?

The 2022 RAM 2500 Regular Cab sees a major update in its infotainment system. The older version of the system has been updated with the latest version of the Uconnect 5 software and it runs as standard across the trim levels. The base Tradesman trim gets a 5.0-inch touchscreen display that runs the Uconnect 5 interface while the upper, Big Horn, trim gets a bigger 8.4-inch display unit. The overall fluidity of the user interface is notable while the layout of the menu items is neat, making the system quite navigable. As standard, the system offers Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, a couple of USB ports, and a 6-speaker Audio system.

Some of the most notable infotainment features available with the 2022 RAM 2500 Regular Cab include:

  • 5-inch/8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment display
  • Android Auto
  • Apple CarPlay
  • Two USB ports
  • 6-speaker audio system
  • Radio Data System

Exterior
8.9/10

With the 2022 RAM 2500 Regular Cab’s exterior design, you can flex your already prominent masculinity even more. The truck’s design is a bit different from the other mainstream trucks in this segment due to a more semi-truck-like appeal at the front but the rest of the design is just about okay. In the base trim, the front grille gets a blacked-out color with the only chrome treatment being given to the RAM lettering. The truck rides on 17-inch steel wheels when it is had in the base Tradesman trim while upgrading to the Big Horn trim will get you a bigger set of 18-inch steel wheels with a full chrome finish. The headlamps and the tail lamps are halogen units and the LED units are reserved for the other body styles with their higher trims. The overall exterior dimensions of the truck are at par with its rivals but look more intimidating with a bigger appeal in the flesh.

The Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Regular Cab lacks some tasteful exterior trim inserts, found on the upper trims of the truck. However, in the base trim, the standard and big two-part front grille along with the four-part headlamps units sets its design apart from the rest in the class. The Ford F250 Super Duty Regular Cab feels like the most understated truck in the class and manages to appear smaller than the rest as well. The GMC Sierra 2500HD Regular Cab has several exterior design similarities with the Silverado 2500HD, but the former has a more macho-like appeal.

Some standout exterior features include:

  • 17-inch/18-inch steel or steel wheels with chrome finish
  • Class V receiver hitch
  • Seven-pin wiring harness
  • Remote keyless entry
  • Heated exterior mirrors
  • Rear window defroster(optional)

Safety
7.0/10

The RAM 2500 Regular Cab has not been crash-tested by either the NHTSA or the IIHS and the 2022 model of the truck faces the same fate as well. The truck also doesn’t get any advanced driver assistance techs as standard but is equipped with a majority of the basic active and passive safety features. Some of the safety techs include emergency braking assist, emergency braking preparation, traction control, and stability control. With the optional Safety Group package, you can make the truck fully ADAS-equipped with features like adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning and mitigation, and Lane Departure mitigation system among a few others.

ome of the standout safety features include:

  • Post-collision safety system
  • Stability control
  • Traction control
  • Ventilated front disc and solid rear disc brakes
  • Emergency braking preparation
  • Emergency braking assist
  • Tire pressure monitoring
  • Dusk sensing headlamps
  • Auto delay off headlamps
  • Engine immobilizer

2022 RAM 2500 Regular Cab vs 2022 Ford F-250 Super Duty Regular Cab

The Ford F-250 Super Duty Regular Cab is a solid contender in this class. But it lacks in some key areas such as towing capacity and fuel efficiency. On the inside too, the truck feels dated as compared to the better-designed and comfier cabin of the RAM 2500. In terms of exterior design, the RAM 2500 has an upper hand due to its intimidating and more truck-like appearance as compared to the F-250. However, the F-250 features lighter aluminum construction that allows it to tow and haul more weight than the RAM 2500 when properly equipped.

2022 RAM 2500 Regular Cab vs 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD Regular Cab

The GMC Sierra 2500HD with its bold exterior and interior design tries to take down the RAM 2500 in every aspect. However, the RAM 2500 has enough going for it such as a higher towing capacity, a long list of trims tailor-made for off-roading, and a feature-rich yet comfy cabin. In the base form, both the trucks can give a barebones feel but the overall quality of the materials and the RAM 2500’s comfier ride attracts a lot of attention.

2022 RAM 2500 Regular Cab vs 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Regular Cab

The Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD is the mechanical twin of the Sierra 2500HD but comes with a slightly toned-down exterior and interior design. Apart from the superior towing capacity numbers, the RAM 2500’s now standard Uconnect 5 infotainment system is quite superior to what the Silverado gets, even in its higher trims. Overall, the RAm proves to be a much better vehicle to invest in as compared to the Silverado 2500HD.

Final Verdict

Absolutely, yes! In the bubble of pickup trucks, the RAM 2500 has come up to be a much better performer than a majority of its rivals from General Motors and Ford. The reasons for its success are the superb cabin, a surprisingly comfy ride for a big truck, a car-like infotainment system, and impressive hauling and towing capacities. Moreover, the RAM offers some unmatched competition with its off-road focused Power Wagon models whereas none of the rivals gets a trim to contend with it.
