Overview

Pickups are work-horses and are used by many business concerns to haul and tow heavy loads. For such heavy-hauling jobs, you need a heavy-duty pickup that is also robust and durable. On that note, the 2020 RAM 2500 comes back stronger than ever with a Monstrous 6.4 Liter HEMI V8 producing 410hp. This RAM has an astonishing 15,040 lbs of towing capacity and a payload capacity of 4,010 lbs.

Buying Advice

It is recommended to buy the Lone Star as it is pretty much comparable to the Big Horn in terms of the offer. Name it and it has it, it is as simple as that, and that too at a relatively lower price tag. Simultaneously, it takes a leap over the base Tradesman in that same scaling. The additional safety touch and proper dynamics and controlling character among them make the Lone Star a better pick.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

And to add to that is an optional big 6.7-Liter Inline-6 Diesel engine from Cummins, which takes the word Heavy-Duty to a whole new level altogether. But does it have what it takes to beat the definitive pickup Ford F-250 Super Duty and similar pickup trucks like the GMC Sierra 2500 HD and Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD? Let’s have a look at that.

Features

The RAM 2500 Regular Cab is available in three trims – Tradesman, Big Horn and Lone Star. There are two engine options on offer – a 6.4L HEMI V8 gasoline and a 6.7L Cummins Inline-6 diesel. Being a pick-up truck, it doesn't offer a lot of creature comforts or customization yet the other segments make up for that.

The Tradesman is the base trim that has been equipped with the Electronic Stability Control and Trailer Sway Control. Both the aforementioned are simply a must from their dynamics and daily commuting perspective. The Lone Star gets the Heated Front Seats which serve best in cold weather conditions. The Heated Seats and Wheel Group has been kept optional in it.

The Big Horn, as the name suggests, is the horned bull among them with exceptional feedback and control at the driving end. The Roll Stability Control for countering body roll and Hydraulic Power-Assist Steering to react against the uncertainties with ease have been integrated into it.

The ParkSense Rear Park-Assist System further increases the blue-chip character and puts it in the same ballpark as other top-tier performers in this category. One can have 17” X 7.5” wheels with the LT245/70SR17 tires for it. Therefore, a subscription to so much in one is something one may experience.

Which Trim should you buy?

It is recommended to buy the Lone Star as it is pretty much comparable to the Big Horn in terms of the offer. Fuel Economy
6.0/10

As the 2020 RAM 2500 gets a new engine, the 6.4L HEMI V8, the fuel economy figures aren’t expected to be welcoming. The reason can be the huge capacity that takes a toll on the swirling effect. On top of that, the huge appetite is further given a hand because of the high weighted mechanical flywheel and crankshaft. In simple terms, some of the energy is wasted to keep the engine running in the form of heat and that is by any means not a desirable scenario.

The Chevy Silverado 2500 gets the maximum fuel tank capacity, while the RAM gets the smallest one of 32 gallons. Since these are heavy-duty trucks that have a beast hidden under their hood, keep in mind that they will chug fuel like water, and expecting any fancy number will be foolishness at one’s end only. There is nothing much that can be stated as the data for them is not available yet.

Interior
8.9/10

In the matter of interior comfort, there is nothing much in the 2020 RAM 2500 Tradesman trim because the Regular Cab is stripped down to the basics, with little to no convenience features. The touch of plastic at the multiple sections makes the interior accent a bit depressing to experience. However, the gear shifter gets the Urethane coating on it and there is a cloth-trimmed headliner which can get some pleasing appeal. The Vinyl Floor Covering and Day-Night Rearview Mirror are probably among the other standard features that you get within it.

All the trucks are capable of seating 3 in a go. The Chevy is the most spacious with maximum headroom, shoulder room, and legroom. The RAM leads in towing capacity while the Ford edges in payload capacity. One can gauge the F-250 as the most practical one which is a blend of all parameters of this segment. Since these trucks are meant to be fleet vehicles for hauling cargo, they don’t offer many interior features and hence should not be a guiding factor in swaying your final call. Standout interior features:

  • Cloth upholstery
  • Front bench seats
  • Power Windows
  • Carpeted floors
  • Air-Conditioning
  • Heated seats and steering wheel in Big Horn Trim

What’s there to keep you entertained?

The base RAM 2500 Tradesman Trim gets an FM/AM/satellite radio player with 4 speakers. The Big Horn trim gets the same system with 6 speakers. Moreover, the UConnect 3 has been kept constant throughout all the trims along with the Radio with Seek-Scan feature. The periphery of the RAM 2500 includes the Voice Activation and Radio Data System.

Once you move forward from there, you would find a 5" Display and an External Memory Control for abusing. On the whole, the narration is somewhat closer to the interior one only. Since the purpose is completely different, there is nothing much to be expecting at one’s end from it and whatever is there at the disposal seems quite sufficient to keep you engaged. Standout infotainment features:

  • FM/AM/satellite radio
  • Vehicle Information Center
  • 6-speaker stereo
  • Voice Activation
  • Radio Data System

Exterior
8.9/10

The 2020 RAM 2500 Regular Cab has a huge footprint. The front grille is massive, with RAM written proudly in bold. There is a slight quality gap among the trims as the Tradesman is quite a plastic-blotted one while the finish tends to improve for the Lone Star and Big Horn. Not just that they even have different wheel specs with 17” steel rims and 18” chrome clad steel rims as per their status. The overall silhouette remains the same with the steel and aluminum panels around. In the end, the front fascia ruggedness is in flow with the Auto On/Off Aero-Composite Halogen Headlamps which match the curve.

The GM twins- the Silverado 2500 and the Sierra 2500 get the largest footprint, being the longest, the widest, and the highest of the lot. They also get a stunning 10.2 inches of ground clearance which is again far greater than the competition. At the same time, the one for the RAM does appear to be enough and would cast challenges when fully loaded. Standout exterior features:

  • 17-inch steel Wheels in Tradesman trim
  • 18-inch chrome-clad steel wheels in BigHorn trim
  • Distinctive Chrome Grille Surround and rear bumper in BigHorn trim
  • Quad Halogen Headlamps
  • Integrated trailer brake controller

Safety
7.0/10

The RAM 2500 gets a serious thrashing when it comes to its rollover crash test as it manages to have 3-stars and that too with a risk percentage of around 30%. This is simply a backlash on its overall picture. The other parameters have yet not been tested yet but the future seems a gloomy one only as of now. It is natural to have a body leaning but a lot could have been done to mitigate that which is certainly not the case here.

It is not even satisfied with its safety end as it gets the bare minimum possible which includes the airbags system, 4-wheel ABS, and a traction control unit. It does get the Roll Stability Control as a standard and a ParkSense Rear Park-Assist System as an option but these will hardly make any difference. Standout safety features:

  • ParkSense Rear Park-Assist System
  • 4-wheel ABS
  • Roll Stability Control
  • Traction Control

Competition
6.0/10

2020 RAM 2500 Regular Cab vs 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD Regular Cab

The Chevy offers the highest in everything. It has the largest engine. It is also the longest, widest, tallest, and has the maximum ground clearance. It is the quickest off-the-line and beats the others in the 0-60 run by a great margin. And to top off the icing on the cake, it gets lots of active safety tech, which the RAM lacks completely. Hence, the Chevrolet Silverado 2500 takes the crown here.

2020 RAM 2500 Regular Cab vs 2020 Ford F-250 Regular Cab

The Ford has a very powerful, yet durable and robust engine. It also gets the best off-road ability and the maximum payload capacity. It has a commendable towing capacity and is the lightest truck amongst the competition. It is fun to drive, which remains unmatched to date. The F-250 also gets a host of active safety tech and a comfortable upmarket interior, which makes the Ford a better choice over the RAM.

2020 RAM 2500 Regular Cab vs 2020 GMC Sierra 2500 HD Regular Cab

The GMC Sierra 2500 is basically a Silverado in different clothes. They have the same underpinnings, the same engine, and the same transmission under the bodywork. It also gets a more decent and comfortable interior along with a host of active safety features. So, the GMC is the better pick of the two. The pricing has been competitive only. Therefore, one can’t simply argue on that matter.

Final Verdict
8.8/10

The RAM 2500 Regular Cab is great value for money considering the refined 6.4L HEMI V8. The RAM is also great in towing capacity and is utilitarian. The Big Horn trim looks stunning, however, its lack of active safety features should not be overlooked. So, considering all the factors the Chevy Silverado puts forward the best proposition, with a better powertrain, active safety features, and a decent upmarket cabin with a proper infotainment system.
