Overview

The 2020 Toyota Tundra CrewMax is available for sale with its price ranging between $37,850 and $51,825. it comes in the form of SR5, Limited, TRD Pro, Platinum, and 1794 Edition. The 5.7L V8 is now the standard and the only engine powering the Tundra. It makes 381 hp and 401 lb-ft. of torque while its towing capacity is rated at 10,200 pounds. The V8 is powerful but it suffers from poor fuel economy.

The Tundra's age can be witnessed by looking at its cabin. Except that, the cabin is spacious and offers the latest technological features. The Tundra also stands out for its long list of standard driver-assist features and strong reliability. Another main benefit of buying the Tundra is low ownership costs. The main rivals of the Tundra include the Ford F-150, the Chevy Silverado, and the Nissan Titan.

Buying Advice

The Limited trim has a good set of comfort and convenience features. It adds dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front leather seats, LED headlights and fog lights, leather steering wheel, proximity keyless entry, power front bucket seats, navigation system, additional speakers, 20-inch alloy wheels, heated exterior mirrors, and a power-sliding rear window.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

Still capable, but struggling to stay relevant- Cnet

The Toyota Tundra CrewMax is a truck that arrived in style via imports but definitely failed to make a mark on the American market. We say that this truck is not about luxury and style, it's all about the comfort and space for both work and weekend games. With this as your companion, you will not have to worry about the load anymore.

As with other Japanese moniker trucks, the ownership costs of the Tundra are comparatively less than American trucks. Considering all costs such as maintenance, repair, fuel, depreciation, and insurance, the true cost to own the Tundra is calculated to be $9,050 annually. Add to that Toyota's strong reputation for building reliable vehicles.

Some equipment offered as standard on upper trim levels is available as part of packages offered on lower trims- Autotrader

The Toyota Tundra Crewmax has five trims i.e. SR5, Limited, TDR Pro, Platinum, and1794 Edition. Prices start from $37,850 for the SR5 while the top-of-the-line 1794 Edition costs up to $51,825. These prices exclude a destination charge of $1,595. Except for the TRD Pro, all other trims are available in both RWD and 4WD configurations. Now if we look at the features of the trims, each and every trim have their own set of features that make them unique from the others.

For example, the 1794 Edition trim is built in such a way that it resembles the old classic trucks while the Platinum trim is equipped with some of the high-tech features that suit the modern era. The TRD Pro adds some exclusive off-roading gear which makes it good for off-roading purposes. Safety features such as blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and front and rear parking sensors are optional for the SR5 and the Limited trims under different packages.

Fuel Economy
6.2/10

The Tundra has the worst fuel economy in its class- CarAndDriver

The fuel economy is probably the sourest point as the Toyota Tundra has a bad reputation for its low fuel economy. It can travel up to 16 miles in the cities and 18 miles on the highway, for every gallon. this equates to a combined mileage of 15 MPG, the lowest in the segment. Adding the 4WD system reduces mileage by 1 MPG.

In order to compensate for its low fuel economy, Toyota fits the Tundra with a large 26.4-gallon fuel tank. That doesn't create much difference. The Tundra delivers 396 miles of combined range whereas 4Wd models drop down the figure to 370 miles. Those who prioritize fuel economy and have to cover long distances for work, stay away from this truck.

If the 4WD version of the Nissan Titan is taken into consideration, then its fuel efficiency is exactly the same as the Ford F-150. Meanwhile, the Chevy Silverado has the best fuel economy in this competition and its overall driving range is also ahead of its rivals. Looking at the figures above, the Tundra's fuel economy is really the worst and not comparable to its rivals.

Interior
7.0/10

The Tundra's interior is spacious and dotted with oversized features, but it's an outdated presentation- CarAndDriver

The Toyota Tundra features an outdated cabin design with a lot of hard plastics but it is functional. Only the SR5 trim has a seating capacity of six. The rest of the trims replace the front bench seat with bucket seats. Except for the SR5 trim, leather upholstery is standard across the range. The front seats have decent levels of comfort and the seat bottoms are soft, which can be uncomfortable for long journeys.

However, they are spacious enough to accommodate tall occupants. Both the front seats are available with power adjustability, heated and ventilated functions on higher trims. The steering wheel is power-adjustable only on the top two trims, which allows for a comfortable driving position. With the CrewMax cab, you'll have more rear-seat legroom but the seat comfort is not that great, especially on longer trips.

Toyota made some changes to the Entune infotainment system this year. It now comes with an 8-inch touchscreen display and features standard Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Amazon Alexa. The interface is user-friendly and runs smoothly. The buttons and dials are made of cheap plastics and need a refresh. A 9-speaker stereo is standard but the 12-speaker JBL premium audio system on the Platinum has an amazing sound quality.

Just one cargo bed configuration is available for the CrewMax cab which is 5.5 ft. in size. The exact cargo volume available in this bed is unknown at the moment but it's definitely less than what the F-150 and the Silverado offers. The maximum payload capacity is rated at 1,730 pounds. The rear seats fold up for carrying larger items if you don't want to put them in the bed. Some other interior features are:

  • Power tilt & telescopic multi-function leather steering wheel
  • Cloth & leather upholstery
  • Power front heated, ventilated seats
  • Auto-dimming rearview mirror
  • Proximity keyless entry
  • Push-button start
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control

Exterior
6.2/10

The Tundra's big, bold grille and stamped tailgate are solid truck elements, but it looks more disjointed inside and out than rivals- The Car Connection

Although the Toyota Tundra hasn't been redesigned since 2014, it's a handsome-looking truck whose design is neither too offensive nor too bland. On the front, you will find a bold and muscular grille across all models but the design varies. The SR5 trim has a black mesh in the middle surrounded by chrome. Even the Platinum trim has the same design but instead uses a metallic mesh. The other option is a bold chrome grille shared between the Limited and 1794 Edition trims.

The headlights are LED on all but the base two trims. Most models also come with LED fog lamps on the lower fascia. The standard wheels are 18-inch alloy wheels but the higher trims get 20-inch alloy wheels. The high ground clearance is its unique character trait, good enough for exploring off-road. The rear design of the Tundra resembles very much its rivals. The LED taillights are narrow stacked onto the tailgate and down below, the chrome exhaust pipe is side-mounted.

The Chevy Silverado has the lowest ground clearance in this competition. Therefore, getting in and out of the truck is easy. The heavy curb weight of the Nissan Titan affects its on-road performance. The Ford F-150's V8 is only available with a 6.5 ft. cargo bed, thereby increasing its overall length. It can be challenging to park the vehicle in tight parking spaces. Some main exterior highlights are:

  • LED auto high-beam headlights
  • LED taillights
  • LED fog lights
  • Puddle lamps
  • Power-folding, heated exterior mirrors
  • Chrome door handles
  • EZ-Lift tailgate
  • 18 & 20-inch alloy wheels
  • Chrome grille

Safety
4.0/10

The Tundra offers a suite of safety features as standard this year under the Toyota Safety Sense umbrella of driver aids- Carbuzz

The Toyota Tundra received mixed responses from NHTSA and IIHS. A 4-star overall safety rating was awarded to the Tundra. Out of six crash tests, IIHS gave a 'Good' rating in just three crash tests. The driver's side crash test and headlights received a 'Marginal' rating while the passenger's side was rated 'Poor'. The roof strength was given an 'Acceptable' rating.

The best part about the Tundra is that the Toyota Safety Sense P is standard even on the base model. It consists of a group of top advanced safety features. There are a few other driver-assist features available as options as well. On top of that, the tundra comes with a suite of eight airbags for enhanced protection of the passengers. The complete list of safety features are:

  • Front & rear parking sensors
  • Pedestrian detection
  • Blind-spot monitor
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Rearview camera
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Lane change assist
  • Lane departure warning
  • Forward collision warning
  • Adaptive cruise control

Competition
8.0/10

2020 Toyota Tundra CrewMax vs 2020 Nissan Titan Crew Cab

The Nissan Titan is slightly more powerful than the Tundra and offers a softer ride. Its fuel economy is also better but the latter has a better towing capacity. The Titan has a beautiful interior and its infotainment system is new for 2020 but the Tundra has an upper hand with more rear legroom. The Titan wins the battle with more standard driver aids than the Tundra.

2020 Toyota Tundra CrewMax vs 2020 Ford F-150 SuperCrew

The Ford F-150 comes with six engine options. It also has the best towing and payload capacities. The ride quality and handling are also better than the Tundra. The interior is spacious and attractive while its cargo volume is the second-best in the segment. The F-150 also earned great safety ratings. No wonder the F-150 is a top-ranking truck in this segment.

2020 Toyota Tundra CrewMax vs 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab

The Chevy Silverado's V8 engine is the least powerful in the segment but is agile and more fuel-efficient than the Tundra. It can also haul and tow more load. The Silverado has the most spacious cabin in the segment and also offers class-leading cargo volume too. Its infotainment system is one of the best in the business. Sadly, it offers just two safety features as standard.

Final Verdict

The 2020 Toyota Tundra CrewMax precisely has all the qualities a Crew Cab has to offer. It has a fair cargo and towing capacity with a powerful V8. Although its interior is dated, it offers user-friendly features. Its poor fuel economy and humongous weight be considered as the main drawbacks that hold it back. However, the Toyota trustworthiness that it has built up past generations becomes one of the noticeable plus points in the consumer market.
