Overview

After a gap of 22 years, the legendary Supra is back from the dead. It is reintroduced as the 2020 Toyota GR Supra, GR meaning Gazoo Racing which is Toyota's racing division. The new Supra is now available in 3 trims- 3.0, 3.0 Premium, and Launch Edition, with a starting price tag of $49,990. It gets its power from a 3.0L turbo six-cylinder engine taken from BMW. This engine is absolutely refined and helps to do 0-60 in just 3.9 seconds, which is really incredible.

The cabin of the Supra is heavily influenced by BMW and this gives it a luxury feel. Even the infotainment system is sourced from BMW's iDrive software. It is more technologically advanced than the previous Supra. Being a modern sports car, it boasts a good amount of the latest driver aids as safety is a priority for Toyota. This tiny mighty beast is anytime ready to take on the Nissan 370Z NISMO and the Porsche 718 Cayman for a one-to-one battle.

Buying Advice

No doubt, the 3.0 Premium trim is the perfect pick. It adds an 8.8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and navigation system, wireless charging, a 12-speaker JBL sound system heated and leather seats, and aluminum foot pedals. We also urge buying the $1,195 Driver Assist package that adds a blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors, and rear parking sensors.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

A solid sports car that’s rife with controversy- Cnet

After a 22-year hiatus, the Toyota GR Supra is prepared to make ripples in the racing world again. The GR in the Supra stands for Gazoo Racing which is the racing division for Toyota. As expected from its DNA, it offers a mind-blowing performance. Even the interior has been revamped to give a modern and fresh look fitted with the latest technological features.

As expected from a Japanese marque, the new Supra isn't high maintenance in its segment. The true cost to own it is close to $11,300, which is low for a sports car. However, it has a high depreciation value and repair cost. The Supra is not yet rated for its reliability but considering the brand's outstanding reputation for reliability, the Supra will fare well.

Features
5.0/10

There's nothing proprietary about the Supra's tech- Motor1

The all-new Toyota GR Supra comes in three trims namely 3.0, 3.0 Premium, and Launch Edition. That latter is a limited edition trim with just 1500 units manufactures. The base price of the Supra starts from $49,990 for the 3.0 trim whereas a fully loaded Launch Edition trim can reach up to $57,375, without a $930 destination fee.

The Launch Edition trim distinguished itself from other trims as it adds red mirror caps, a carbon-fiber trim on the dash with the signature of Akio Toyoda, and some other cool features. The list of standard features on the Supra is extensive which makes it a modern sports car with lots of technological features. We say modern as it is available with ample driver-assist features.

Fuel Economy
5.0/10

Fuel efficiency is not an area we expected the Supra to shine in, but shine it does- Edmunds

Toyotas have been famous for the fuel efficiency that they offer and the Supra does the same. In comparison to standards of performance-oriented, the Supra might be the most fuel-efficient coupe with a six-cylinder engine. It returns an efficient 24 MPG in the city and an impressive 31 MPG on the highway while giving 26 MPG combined.

If these numbers don't seem to impress we suggest checking out the performance section again. There are several 4 cylinder cars in the market that fail to deliver the kind of MPG figures the Supra does. It is fitted with a small 13.7-gallon fuel tank but thanks to its strong fuel efficiency, it delivers a commendable driving range, good enough for a long drive.

The Supra has the best numbers out of the lot but owing to its small fuel tank, the range is lowered. On the contrary, the Nissan 370Z NISMO is the least fuel-efficient car in the competition but delivers a slightly better range than the Supra. The Porsche 718 Cayman is kind of the middle child here in terms of fuel economy.

Interior
4.0/10

The BMW collaboration is most noticeable inside- Autoblog

The first thing you'll notice stepping into the Toyota GR Supra is the lack of the driver-oriented airplane cockpit-style dash that the Mk4 sported. It gave the driver the feel of piloting an airplane due to the way it was built. Snapping out of the nostalgic interior of the Mk4, the new Supra feels much more tamed and reminds us of the BMW interiors a bit. The steering wheel feels great to hold and provides enough grip. The aluminum paddle shifters feel premium to the touch.

The seats on the Supra are heavily bolstered and the bucket seats provide enough support required to grip the seats while cornering. The seats are quite comfortable made by a mixture of leather and Alcantara adding a premium touch. All the materials used in the interior are top-notch and premium. It gives the interior a luxurious feel which was certainly missing in the Mk4 Supra. The seats are 14-way adjustable giving the driver and passenger the option to adjust seats according to personal preference.

The infotainment system housed in the Supra is BMW's iDrive infotainment system that animates the Toyota logo and Supra silhouettes. A 6.5-inch display is standard but an 8.8-inch touchscreen display is available on higher trims. The larger screen features wireless Apple CarPlay which is a first for Toyota. The iDrive interface is much more user-friendly and straightforward. The addition of a 12-speaker JBL surround sound system is like a cherry on top of the cake.

When it comes to the storage capacity not many would bother on how much cargo the Supra can store. The Supra offers 10.2 cu-ft. of cargo storage which is good enough to hold a few bags together while going on a trip or a couple of duffle bags easily. Despite being a sports car, Toyota has bundled plenty of features on the inside of the GR Supra. Here is a list of a few of the most notable features of the same.

  • Tilt & telescopic multi-function leather steering wheel with paddle shifters
  • Aluminum foot pedals
  • 14-way power-adjustable leather sport seats
  • Heated seats
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Proximity keyless entry
  • Auto-dimming rearview mirror
  • 8.8-inch touchscreen w/ wireless Apple CarPlay
  • 12-speaker JBL premium audio system
  • Navigation system
  • Wireless charging

Exterior
7.0/10

The Supra looks like a modern running shoe- Motor1

We do see some resemblance that the Toyota GR Supra holds with the Mk4 from the past. The design style is a combination of the FT-1 Concept and the Mk4 blended together well. The LED headlamps along with the LED DRLs on the bottom add a fresh and meaner look to the car entirely. It has a smaller wheelbase in comparison which positively changes the handling and driving dynamics of the car. The faux vents in the front and on the sides add an aggressive look to the car. The smaller vents in the front do certainly grab attention.

On the side, the bold lines define the Supra and add a bit of muscle towards the rear. The 19-inch forged aluminum wheels do their part and add the design element to the car well. The sloping roofline gives it the sports coupe look which is stunning nonetheless. The rear looks stunning with the high boot lid which looks like a spoiler. The LED taillights are elongated just like the headlights which do seem impressive. The diffuser houses the dual circular exhausts which do their part of making the angry grunts from the inline-six.

The Nissan 370Z NISMO has a wider wheelbase than the Supra that helps to offer a stable and composed ride. The Porsche 718 Cayman's overall width is 2.1 inches less than the Supra. Its compact size can be an advantage to drive on narrower roads. Some exterior features that enhance the overall appeal and beauty of the Supra are:

  • 19-inch forged aluminum wheels
  • LED auto high-beam headlights
  • LED fog lamps
  • LED DRLs
  • LED taillights
  • Power-folding, auto-dimming exterior mirrors
  • Black grille

Safety
8.0/10

Toyota offers a host of driver-assistance features as standard- CarAndDriver

Just like many sports and luxury cars available in the States, the Toyota Supra has not been crash-tested by NHTSA or IIHS. The chassis of the Supra and the Z4 are identical as they share a similar platform The chassis is made from alloys of aluminum and steel, which help the car hold certain structural integrity and sturdiness. Eight airbags are standard, which is impressive for a sports car.

The list of active autonomous driving assists available on the Supra is similar to the kind found on BMWs. So the Supra gets the best of both worlds and is a car with a mixture of all good traits from Toyota and BMW. This does make the Supra fairly safe in our accords. Besides the standard safety features, the optional Driver Assist package adds a few more. These include

  • Automatic rain-sensing wipers
  • Pre-collision system with pedestrian detection
  • Lane departure warning with steering assist
  • Rearview camera
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Head-up display
  • Full-speed adaptive cruise control
  • Blind-spot monitor
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Rear parking sensor

2020 Toyota GR Supra vs 2020 Porsche 718 Cayman

The Porsche 718 Cayman is around $7,500 costlier than the Supra. It is a 2-seater coupe that offers four and six-cylinder engine options. Like the Supra, it is also an impressive driving machine but its fuel economy is unimpressive. The Cayman's cabin feels more elegant while its trunk volume is one of the best. It also packs more infotainment features than the Supra. However, it falls short in terms of safety features.

2020 Toyota GR Supra vs 2020 Nissan 370Z NISMO

The Nissan 370Z NISMO is another of the Supra that comes with a powerful V6 with manual transmission for driving purists. However, its performance levels are subpar and it isn't that special. It is also the least fuel-efficient car in the class. It does even offer a touchscreen in the most basic trim but its cabin is spacious. It further lacks active safety features and enough cargo volume.

Final Verdict

The 2020 Toyota GR Supra is back and it does seem promising. It is a reliable car due to the two brands that are associated with it, Toyota and BMW are known for their reliability and dependability. Toyota has added a plethora of features in the Supra which give it a very premium and upmarket feel. For its price, the Supra is value for money with the level of performance and handling that it provides. Toyota has added a lot of quirks around the Supra that aftermarket mods and tuners can utilize to make the car better and faster. Bringing the tuner culture back, the 2020 GR Supra is a car worth the price tag quoted.
