Overview

First introduced in the year 2012, and currently in its second generation, The 2024 Subaru BRZ is the ideal automobile that you should put your money on if you are looking for a sportscar that has sleek styling, amazing performance, close-to-perfect ride and handling balance, and that too at an affordable price. A perfect example of badge engineering with the Toyota GR86, the BRZ gets a slightly tweaked suspension setup, which adds to a better handling experience as compared to the similar GR86. Apart from that, you get a slick-shifting 6-speed manual transmission paired with a powerful 2.4L flat-four engine which pushes out a healthy 228 hp and 184 lb-ft of peak torque which, paired with this lightweight chassis, is nothing less than pure entertainment around the corners.

Talking of its rivals, the 2024 Subaru BRZ goes head-to-head with its very own sibling, the Toyota GR86, which is essentially a Subaru BRZ with Toyota’s badge of reliability, and the Mazda MX-5 Miata RF which is taken as an indirect rival as it comprises of a smaller engine.

Buying Advice

The Premium variant can be the best variant for you if you are not looking forward to having too many features on your Subaru, while still getting the same 2.4L engine for amazing performance. And according to us, it would be the best variant to opt for without compromising on any major feature.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The Subaru BRZ does not receive any major change for the year 2024, and we are not disappointed by it, since it has all the ingredients which make it the best sportscar for any beginner. Apart from the powerful 2.4L flat-four and excellent driving dynamics which it shares with the Toyota GR-86, it comprises a driver-centric comfortable interior, along with a range of safety features that ensure confidence in the driver to push it to its limits.

Engine and Performance
9.0/10

Talking about the 2024 Subaru BRZ's performance, it has got an amazing engine under its hood, which is a naturally aspirated 2.4L Flat-4 engine that pushes out 228 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels through a slick-shifting 6-speed manual gearbox, which is precise and is just like the cherry on the top. However, there is also an option for a 6-speed automatic which is also equipped with paddle shifters. Talking about the overall nature of the engine, it is responsive throughout the range and there is no flat spot in the initial, mid, or top-end, unlike turbocharged cars which always have to be in the meat of their powerband to extract the best power. This particular characteristic makes it our personal favorite. The engine is potent enough, hits 0-60 MPH in just 5.4 seconds, and has a claimed top speed of 140 MPH. The same engine does duty on the 2024 Toyota GR86, which is essentially the same vehicle with a Toyota badge.

Both the 2024 Subaru BRZ and the 2024 Toyota GR86 are prime examples of badge-engineering cars, and they share the same powertrains, and parts, among others. Hence the only car worth comparing to in this comparison is the Mazda MX-5 Miata RF, which has a smaller 2L engine that pushes out 181 hp and 151 lb-ft of peak torque. However, it stands nowhere close to the Mazda and Toyota siblings' 2.4L horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine which produces a maximum power of 228 hp and peak torque of 184 lb-ft. The 2.4L engine will also get you quicker to the 0-60 MPH mark by a mere 0.3 seconds as compared to Miata's 2L Inline-4.

2024 Subaru BRZ Ride and Handling

Coming to The best part about the 2024 Subaru BRZ has to be its steering feedback and handling without a doubt. Through the corners, the BRZ is a breeze to drive. You exactly know where the car is going thanks to a well-tuned suspension and an excellent overall balance in the vehicle. The steering is quick to respond and is calibrated in such a way you never lose control around the twisties or any other kind of roads. And being an RWD, you can drift your way through the tracks, and the BRZ is more than happy to do it, without losing a sweat or control. All this happens due to the light weight of the vehicle, a great engine, and an extremely well-tuned suspension setup which makes the BRZ a grippy and fun car to drive! However, some might find the ride to be a little too harsh, due to the stiff suspension setup but that suits the overall character of the car, and it does soak the bumps really well. Although there are noise levels from the road that creep into the cabin while going through a rough patch and should be minimized.

2024 Subaru BRZ Braking Performance

The Subaru BRZ offers you a great set of powerful brakes to take control of things while you are enjoying its performance in straight-line acceleration or during corners or twisties. Weight at 2,815 the BRZ offers you 11.6 inches and 11.4 inches of ventilated disc at the front and rear respectively, along with a range of safety technology features like an emergency braking assist, and reverse automatic braking which automatically applies brakes, to avoid a sort of imminent collision with an object behind the vehicle and various others to help you enjoy a confident yet assuring drive when cruising in the BRZ!

Helping the 2,815 2024 Subaru BRZ come to a stop are its 11.6 inches of brake rotors which do duty on the front brakes, while there are 11.4 inches of brake rotors at the rear. Both of these are the biggest brake rotors in the segment. However, it is the Miata MX–5 Miata RF that comes to a halt in a shorter distance than the BRZ and GR86 thanks to its lightweight!

Fuel Economy
5.4/10

The 2024 Subaru BRZ and the 2024 Toyota GR86, offer similar as well as decent fuel economy with returning figures like 20 MPG in the city, 27 MPG on the highway, and a combined fuel economy of 22 MPG with a 13.2 gallon fuel tank. The total combined range for the 2024 Subaru BRZ stands at 290 miles, combined. However, a lot depends on the driving style of an individual when taking parameters like fuel efficiency into consideration. Moreover, there are few people who exist on this planet who buy cars like these for fuel efficiency.

Amongst its competitors, it's the Mazda MX-5 Miata RF which is the most fuel-efficient of all the three, thanks to its smaller capacity 2.0L Inline-4 engine which produces lesser power and torque compared to the siblings in this comparison. However, the GR86 and BRZ have larger fuel capacity at 13.2 gallons, still, it is the MX-5 Miata RF that offers the greater range with 345 miles combined.

Interior
4.0/10

Stepping inside the Subaru BRZ will instantly make you realize that you are sitting in a performance-oriented vehicle, And handling those 228 horses under the hood could be a nerve-wracking situation at times, and that is why Subaru BRZ offers you heavily bolstered front bucket seats which securely holds the driver in place while cornering. They have red accents across them to match the car’s racy intentions. Apart from that you get a 7.0-inch fully digital gauge cluster that has an attractive tachometer and even switches to linear graph in the Track drive mode providing all the necessary information.

The Subaru BRZ is a 4-seater coupe that has a driver-centric design and a cabin that boasts modern technology along with sporty aesthetic touches right from the seats. Also, it features a decent-sized cargo area of 6.3 cu-ft which has enough space for storing your tires for track days. Talking about its rivals, the Mazda MX-5 Miata RF is a 2-seater coupe and has surprisingly more space in the front row as compared to the Subaru BRZ and Toyota GR86, However, it loses out on cargo space which stands at 4.6 cu-ft.

Some of the key interior features are:

  • 7.0-inch fully digital gauge cluster
  • 8.0-inch standard touchscreen infotainment system
  • Special bolstered front bucket seats
  • Tilt and telescopic steering wheel
  • 6-way manual driver seat adjustments
  • Leather steering wheel

How intuitive is the 2024 Subaru BRZ infotainment system?

The 2024 Subaru BRZ offers you an 8.0-inch standard touchscreen infotainment system that sits in the center of the dashboard for entertainment and gets practical features like Android Auto, Apple Carplay, and access to SiriusXM satellite radio. Apart from that, it gets physical buttons rather than touch controls for various controls and settings of the infotainment system which helps you focus completely on the road when driving spiritedly.

Key infotainment features are

  • 6 speakers
  • Auxiliary audio input and USB with external media control
  • Satellite Radio
  • AM/FM stereo
  • USB connection
  • Android Auto/Apple CarPlay

Exterior
6.0/10

As there are no changes to the exterior designs of the 2024 Subaru BRZ, it looks similar to the outgoing model and continues to look stunning and sleek. Starting from the headlights, you get LED projector beam lights, daytime running LEDs, and LED turn indicators in them. The front fascia has cleverly designed corner vents that help in channeling air and further help in aerodynamics.

At the bottom of the bumper, you can notice a subtle splitter that looks clean along with that flat black opening on its top giving a dynamic look to the front of the Subaru BRZ. You might be confused when choosing between the BRZ or the similar-looking GR86, but we personally like the sporty front design of the Toyota GR86. Coming to the side profile, you notice a curvy yet sleek design and you either get an option of 17 or 18-inch alloy wheels depending on the trim you opt for. You also have functional vents on the side as well, making the overall design look extremely clean as well as functional. Coming to the rear, you will instantly notice the flared-out fenders and a slightly lifted-up lip spoiler on the boot. Apart from that there are stylish-looking LED tail lights, LED turn signals, and rear diffuser along with single-tip exhaust on both sides.

Comparing the Subaru BRZ with its rivals in terms of exterior and overall dimensions, it has the exact dimensions as the Toyota GR86, while the Mazda MX-5 falls short in terms of length, width, and height when compared to the BRZ and the GR86. It is also 400 lbs lighter than the Subaru with a curb weight of 2,341 lbs and shorter by almost 10 inches when it comes to the wheelbase. However, the Miata has a slight edge when it comes to ground clearance and it is 0.2 inches above the ground as compared to the siblings here!

Some standout exterior features include:

  • LED Brakelights
  • Speed Sensitive Variable Intermittent Wipers
  • Tinted Glass
  • Lip Spoiler
  • Fixed Rear Window w/Defroster
  • 18-inch alloy wheels
  • Use of Aluminum components

Safety

Coming to the safety department, the 2024 Subaru BRZ ensures a safe drive along with strong performance through its long list of standard and advanced features on offer. Like Subaru’s own eyeSight system which is nothing but an extra set of eyes for the car, and offers features like driver assist technologies like lane keep assist, smart braking, and throttle control but this is limited only to automatic-equipped models of the BRZ. Standard safety features include Traction Control, 4-wheel ABS, Tire pressure monitoring, and Passenger airbag occupant sensing deactivation among various other features.

Some of the notable features of the 2024 Subaru BRZ include:

  • Blind spot and lane departure warnings accident avoidance system
  • Lane keep assist
  • Subaru’s EyeSight system
  • Dual front side-mounted airbags
  • Pre-collision safety system
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Emergency braking assist

Competition

2024 Subaru BRZ vs. Toyota GR86

The 2024 Subaru BRZ and the Toyota GR86 are prime examples of badge engineering cars in the automobile industry, and both of them offer the same engine and powertrain options, are based on the same platform, share lots of components, and also manage to look somewhat identical to each other except the logos and few cosmetic upgrades. However, it is the Subaru that is slightly the better car to drive of the two thanks to its upgraded suspension system, and the addition of aluminum body panels which are used to reduce weight to some extent, resulting in, it being slightly more expensive than the Toyota. However, only a few people would be able to notice it, and it would not make any difference as such in day-to-day regular usability. Apart from that, we personally feel that the GR86 looks a little bit sportier, thanks to its subtle touches on the exterior front, and with Toyota, you also get reliability assurance. Apart from that, there aren’t any changes in either of the cars and you cannot go wrong with any of them to enjoy the RWD sportscar experience!

2024 Subaru BRZ vs. 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF

The 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF is actually the sole competitor of the 2024 Subaru BRZ in this comparison and has a lot of common things to share with the Subaru BRZ. Both of the cars are rear-wheel drive, are equally fun to drive, offer six-manual transmission, and are lightweight. However, where the Miata differentiates itself from the BRZ is the fact that it comes in convertible form as compared to BRZ’s hardtop body shape. Which we feel, could be a deal breaker for a lot of people despite the fact that the BRZ has a more powerful engine on offer. So, it totally depends on you if you want to opt for the Miata for a wind-in-the-hair feeling or if you want to enjoy the extra power of the 2.4L engine on the BRZ!

Final Verdict

The Subaru BRZ is a great car in most parameters and you would not go wrong with it if you are in the market for your first sportscar. It offers you a powerful engine paired with an RWD powertrain, great driving dynamics, drool-worthy looks, and most importantly, it does all this without causing a hole in your bank account, and that is what makes it one of our topmost recommendations in this segment. However, if you do not wish to shell out that extra amount, you can get the Toyota GR86, which has a slightly less stiff suspension as compared to the BRZ but does not make a world of difference and both the cars feel similar when driven in city conditions.
