Overview

The humble minivans are slowly fading away from the American streets, but there are still a bunch of minivans in the market who are trying their hardest to stall the inevitable. One of these minivans is the ever-green Toyota Sienna, which has been a mainstay among American households ever since it made its introduction in 1998. Its desirable traits of a comfortable ride, unbeatable utility, and spacious cabin for 7 or 8 passengers make the Toyota Sienna minivan as good as any crossover.

Buying Advice

The SE trim is the most stylish Sienna as it unlocks a stylish grille and 7-spoke wheels. This trim is also more upscale compared to the base trims as it unlocks perforated leather upholstery and heating functionality for the seats as well as a leather-wrapped steering wheel. If you are opting for all-wheel drive, you have to settle for a 7-seater capacity as standard instead of the usual 8-seater. The SE trim also adds a convenient power liftgate to ease up access to your trunk.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2020 Toyota Sienna keeps the incredible utility of a minivan alive, while also offers a class-leading safety suite, exclusive all-wheel-drive, and a range of versatile features to appeal to the average family man. The minivan segment is still up and running, as the Sienna faces stiff competition from the likes of other minivans like the Honda Odyssey, the Chrysler Pacifica, and the Kia Sedona.

Features
7.0/10

The 2020 Toyota Sienna lineup is distinguished into 5 major trims- L, LE, SE, XLE, and Limited. Every trim is powered by the same V6 powertrain. All-wheel-drive is available as an option on every trim, excluding the base L trim. The L and the Limited trim get the 2nd-row captain’s chairs as standard, thus giving a passenger capacity of 7. The rest of the trims support an 8-seater passenger capacity. The overview of the features of all these trims is given in the table below.

Which trim should you buy?

The SE trim is the most stylish Sienna as it unlocks a stylish grille and 7-spoke wheels. This trim is also more upscale compared to the base trims as it unlocks perforated leather upholstery and heating functionality for the seats as well as a leather-wrapped steering wheel. If you are opting for all-wheel drive, you have to settle for a 7-seater capacity as standard instead of the usual 8-seater. The SE trim also adds a convenient power liftgate to ease up access to your trunk.

Fuel Economy
4.0/10

With the base V-6 onboard, the Toyota Sienna still churns out a very respectable fuel economy by family standards. EPA rates the minivan at an MPG of 26 in the city. The highway MPG rounds off at a splendid figure of 26. This equates to a decent combined MPG figure of 21. With its fuel tank capacity of 20 gallons, the Sienna can shell out a city range of 364 miles and a highway range of 462 miles. The AWD variant sees a minor dip in its city and highway economy, with the EPA rating this Sienna variant at a city MPG of 18 and a highway MPG of 24. This equates to a combined MPG of 20, which still isn’t too shabby.

The Toyota Sienna is only second best to the Honda Odyssey and Chrysler Pacifica when it comes to the most fuel-efficient minivans. The Odyssey’s higher range may be more appealing to cash-savvy customers than the Chrysler Pacifica. The Kia Sedona is also not behind as it also offers a combined MPG of 21 while also offering a better range due to its best-in-class fuel capacity of 21.1 gallons.

Interior
9.0/10

Toyota gives you a typical feel of a budget vehicle inside its Sienna minivan. Toyota feeds you scraps with little hints of luxury as the Sienna’s interior focuses fully on functionality and convenience. The dashboard looks disjointed with cheap plastics surrounding every inch of the area. Regardless of the interior quality, the Sienna offers comfortable seating for up to 7 passengers. Drivers can expand the seating capacity to 8 by opting for a stowable center seat for the 2nd-row.

The front seats are adequately spacious and comfortable, with a decent view of the road ahead. All the seats feature adequate support for you and your passengers on a long drive. Higher trims offer recliner seats as well as heating functionality to add in more luxury and comfort. The three-zone climate control will keep all the passengers cozy after a fun outing at the beach.

The Toyota Sienna offers a splendid 39.1 cubic feet of space behind its 3rd-row seats, which is almost on par with most crossovers on the market. With the 3rd-row seats fold fully flat, you can fit in a humongous 87.1 cubic feet worth of luggage. The Sienna is rated at a maximum cargo capacity of 150.1 cubic feet, a figure which outclasses every other minivan. However, customers have to remove the 2nd-row seats fully to get the maximum cargo space, which is a bit of an inconvenience. The Sienna also has one of the roomiest interior dimensions in its segment. The notable interior features onboard the Sienna are:

  • Three-zone automatic climate control with air filter
  • Fabric-trimmed seats
  • Power windows with auto up/down and jam protection
  • 60/40 Split & Stow 3rd Row seat with one-motion stow
  • 2nd-row captain’s chairs
  • Remote keyless entry system

What’s there to keep you entertained?

Toyota provides you a 5-inch touchscreen in sync with its intuitive Entune 3.0 infotainment system aboard the Sienna minivan. This infotainment system is integrated with modern technologies like Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alexa. The driver also gains access to exclusive features on the Limited trim like Dynamic navigation and WiFi connect powered by Verizon for a lively driving experience. However, the infotainment suite is still outdated owing to its low-resolution graphics and feels a generation behind compared to most setups on the market. Android Auto is also missing out, otherwise, the Sienna would have had a decent tech suite.

Nevertheless, optional features like a 16.4-inch rear entertainment screen and a 10-speaker JBL sound system will help to keep your kids entertained. The Sienna Easy Speak system is also a handy tool, which might help parents to relay any instructions to their kids seated behind through a microphone broadcast. Apart from this, there are many basic tech features which are of use in everyday life. The infotainment features offered inside the Sienna minivan include:

  • 5-inch touchscreen
  • Entune 3.0 Audio infotainment
  • Apple CarPlay
  • Amazon Alexa
  • Available Dynamic navigation
  • Available 10-speaker JBL sound system
  • Available 16.4-inch rear entertainment screen
  • WiFi hotspot

Exterior
6.7/10

The 2020 Toyota Sienna is styled as a classic minivan with a humble structure and no prominent body lines to portray itself as a simple budget-friendly family automobile. The design has remained unchanged for the past 5 years, while rivals like the Honda Odyssey and the Chrysler Pacifica are implementing more modern visual cues. The front fascia looks similar to its other Toyota siblings, with an instantly recognizable signature front grille and the angular headlights flanking its sides. Other than the large taillamps, there are no other remarkable features. The exterior features minimal body lines and no design curves. The roof rails add some sense of minivan utility to the otherwise bland-looking Sienna.

The Toyota Sienna has a heavier curb weight compared to its adversaries. Dimensionally, the Sienna is also the longest and tallest minivan on the market. The Sienna’s impressive 6.5 inches of ground clearance protects the minivan from most of the road bumps. The only minivan to offer better ground clearance is the Sedona with a ground clearance of 6.7 inches. The exterior features of the Toyota Sienna minivan are:

  • Black roof rails
  • Roof-mounted shark-fin antenna
  • 17-inch 5-spoke alloy wheels
  • Rear bumper protector
  • Black power outside mirrors with integrated blind spot mirrors

Safety
5.0/10

In terms of safety, the 2020 Toyota Sienna is ready to shield its passengers from the impact of a collision with its array of active safety features. The Toyota Safety Sense P unlocks standard features including pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assist, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and automatic high beams. The Sienna also gets an adaptive cruise control system as standard.

However, the catch is that this system doesn’t feature stop-and-go capability, which means that it automatically turns off once the car’s speed drops below 25 mph. Nevertheless, with all these high-tech driver assistance aids onboard, the 2020 Sienna gets a 5-star safety rating from the federal agency NHTSA. However, the Sienna missed out on any safety accolades from IIHS. The safety suite of the Toyota Sienna includes:

  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Lane departure warning
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Pedestrian detection
  • Lane-keeping assist
  • Automatic high beams
  • Integrated backup camera

Competition
7.0/10

2020 Toyota Sienna VS 2020 Honda Odyssey

The Honda Odyssey has always matched the Toyota Sienna in every sector, as both these minivans have competed for the top spot in the segment over the years. The Odyssey has been redesigned this year, which brings in better exterior aesthetics and interior quality to the table. The Odyssey also sports a slightly roomier cabin, although the Sienna offers way more space to stow away your cargo. The Sienna also packs in more power, although its engine doesn’t feel as natural and enthusiastic compared to the Odyssey. Overall, from a family’s perspective, the Sienna offers more standard features than the Odyssey and is worth the extra $1,000.

2020 Toyota Sienna VS 2020 Chrysler Pacifica

The Toyota Sienna has a clear edge over the Chrysler Pacifica with more power under the hood. However, this power advantage translates to a setback in the fuel charts, as the Sienna trails behind the Pacifica. The Pacifica also feels more refined and responsive to drive than the Sienna. Both the minivans include a plethora of standard interior features, although the Pacifica takes the onus with its stylish interior quality compared to the outdated Sienna. The Toyota has more cargo room behind its seats, but we appreciate Chrysler’s innovative storage options like the Stow’n go seats much more. The Toyota Sienna is more affordable in this head-to-head. However, we won’t mind paying the extra $3,000 for the Chrysler Pacifica, as it is newer and better than the Sienna in almost every aspect.

2020 Toyota Sienna VS 2020 Kia Sedona

The Kia Sedona is the most budget-friendly entrant in the minivan segment. The Toyota Sienna clearly beats the Sedona with its higher power output. The Sedona also suffers from an average fuel economy, with the Sienna being the more fuel-efficient option. Inside, the Sedona sports a very spacious and comfortable cabin, but the Sienna also offers the same. The Sedona’s crossover roots affect its minivan utility, as it offers way less cargo space compared to the humongous Sienna. The Sedona does have a more high-tech infotainment system than the Sienna, but its Toyota counterpart offers way more premium features. The Toyota Sienna may be priced higher than the Sedona, but it is the better minivan for your family.

Final Verdict

The 2020 Toyota Sienna is a family-friendly automobile, offering an array of desirable features in an affordable package. The potent powertrain is adequate to chauffeur your beloved family members around, which includes those short trips of driving your kids to their practice sessions. The interior is focused on utility and comfort, with adequate space for each family member to stretch themselves out. The Sienna is also a capable cargo hauler, making life easier for families to pack all their luggage before setting out on a vacation. All in all, the Sienna offers the most value-for-money compared to any minivan out there and is indeed an excellent family choice.
