Overview

The Ford F-150 is perhaps the most popular pickup in the States right now and is one of the few vehicles to survive Ford's production shut down. The 2020 F-150 Regular Cab comes with a couple of changes which mostly includes more package on offer and an improved version of the older infotainment system. The F-150 Regular Cab is more of a workhorse than a lifestyle pickup yet it isn't sans creature comfort. The F-150 Regular Cab is only offered in a couple of trims and two bed length choices while there is a long list of available engine options with the base one being a V6 mated to an old-school six-speed automatic.

The 2020 Ford F-150 though a capable workhorse doesn't boast class-leading towing capacities like the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 or the GMC Sierra 1500 but offers a fine balance of pulling and hauling power with best-in-class gas mileage. With an all-new full-aluminum lightweight body construction the 2020 F-150 Regular Cab has a starting MSRP of $28,745, an approximately $600 price bump from last year.

Buying Advice

The XLT trim is the one you should look out for if you want any sort of passenger comfort in your truck. The XL variant focuses more on the workable aspects of the truck rather than the luxury.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

Ford F-150 is one of the best-selling trucks in the market currently. With the F-150 Regular Cab being the top choice for those requiring a workhorse. The Regular Cab is offered in two variants only to keep prices in check with a choice of two-bed size options to suit different needs. Apart from that, the now-standard 10-speed automatic gearbox isn't available on the base V6 engine of the F-150 Regular Cab instead you get a 6-speed automatic here. That said, the 2020 F-150 packs in a lot of space and comfort along with a significant road presence.

The Ford F-150 may be the best-selling pickup, but that doesn't mean that it's without competition. Several other manufacturers have caught up and offer quite a stunning range of features, making them adept not only for hauling cargo but also for comfortable commutes. The RAM 1500, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, and GMC Sierra 1500 are among such rivals. Let's see if the F-150 has still got what it takes to keep the competition at bay.

Features
7.5/10

The F-150 has a lot of different variations you can have. The Regular Cab version, the variant in question here, gets two trims, and both these trims get two box sizes in the back. The XLT upgrades a lot on the base XL trim but sees a steep price bump for the changes it offers. In terms of safety, both the trims fare pretty well with similar driver aids and safety features.

Both the XL and XLT trim offers three special packages each and a couple of standalone options. The package for XL trim includes XL Chrome package, XL STX package, and XL Sport package. While for the XLT trim you have XLT Special Edition package and Chrome and Sport package like the one seen on XL trim. All the trims offer exterior enhancement and different alloy wheel options for varying prices.

Apart from the package, there are optional features available which include a tailgate step, power windows and door locks, SYNC infotainment system with voice activation, trailer brake assist, MyKey, etc for the XL trim. While for the XLT trim can be added with navigation, rear parking sensors, power-adjustable driver's seat, integrated loading ramps, Pro Trailer Backup Assist, etc.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

The 2020 Ford F-150 Regular Cab with a V6 returns 19 mpg in the city, 25 mpg on the highway, and 22 mpg combined. While the 4WD version sees a drop of 1 mpg in the city and 2 mpg on the highway gas mileage. This large truck sure does burn a lot of oil. The fuel economy numbers on the Ford-150 aren't too good, but still fine for the size. A 23-gallon fuel tank grants it a decent range, so you don't have to refuel like crazy when you are out on a long haul.

The F-150 Ford leads the way in fuel efficiency, owing to its lovely engine, which is less powerful and torquey than others. Of course, efficiency figures go down if the engine puts out more power and torque. That said, in the city, the RAM 1500 is close to the F-150 's gas mileage by returning 17 mpg while on the highway it matches the F-150's gas mileage figures.

Interior
9.3/10

"There's a lot to like about the F-150. All seats provide both appropriate support and all-day comfort, and the climate control system is a model of effectiveness. Plus the cabin environment is quiet and calm."  -Edmunds

2020 Ford F-150 Regular Cab Seating and Comfort

The 2020 F-150 Regular Cab has a lot of space on the inside, courtesy of its large dimensions. Two people have much more space than they would ever need, while three will be a squeeze. The seats are extremely comfortable, and not only does the Ford offer a lot of space, but a lot of equipment as well on all except the base trim. On the base trim, there are hardly any luxury features on offer, heck even the door locks and windows aren't powered.

There are plenty of cubby holes around as well, and the doors have bottle-holding spaces too. Overall, the cabin is lovely to be in. You also get interior lighting and lighting for the bed behind as well, which are some practical and nifty touches.

In comparison with rivals, the Chevrolet Silverado is in the top spot with the most amount of legroom and headroom on offer. While the RAM 1500 is on the other end of the spectrum with the least amount of cabin space on offer. With the F-150 slotting right in between the Silverado 1500 and the RAM 1500 in terms of cabin space.

??€?€?€?strong>2020 Ford F-150 Regular Cab Infotainment System

As standard, the 2020 F-150 Regular Cab gets a 4.2-inch LCD display in the center console, and a 2.3-inch screen in between the dials in the driver's console as well. While the onboard Wi-Fi system has been replaced with an updated 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot setup, the Infotainment system hasn't. You'll find the voice-activated Sync system still on duty in the base trim but that too is an optional extra.

If you wish for an update, you can have the Ford SYNC3 infotainment system with an 8-inch touchscreen on the XLT trim, which is much better. The touch response time would have certainly been better but the overall system is really good to use.

"The first step to picking out your [F-150] truck is deciding which cab style and bed length you want. Since not every trim is available with every cab/bed combination, your choice of trims is whittled down, making life a little easier for you as a buyer."  -Cars, US News

2020 Ford F-150 Regular Cab Dimensions and Weight

The 2020 Ford F-150 Regular Cab full-size truck has had the same body for a few years now, which means the dimensions have remained identical for quite a few years. The Standard Box (6 and a half feet) variant is just 209 inches long, while the Long Box (8 feet) variant is substantially longer at 227 inches. Weight may have altered a bit though, but not enough to be noticeable under practical situations, mainly due to the updated engines and transmission. Ford F-150 weighs in at 4,069 lbs for the lightest model (LX Standard box with 3.3-liter V6).

The Ford F-series has always been a looker, even back in the 50s. Fast forward a few decades, and we have ourselves the modern iteration of this vehicle, in its glorious thirteenth generation. It's a big, bulky-looking pick-up with a massive front grille, two shapely dual headlights on each side of the face. The vehicle gets 17-inch steel wheels as standard, with 17-inch alloys as an option. You also get LED DRLs and Chrome front grille on the equipment list by default.

With a curb weight of just a little over 2 tons, the F-150 truck is lighter than its rivals. All three trucks are heavier trucks in the segment weighing at over 2-and-a-three-quarter tons. Coming to the dimensions the Silverado 1500 and the Sierra 1500 measure the longest, widest, tallest, and ones with the longest wheelbase. While the F-150 has the highest ground clearance among all.

Safety
8.5/10

The Ford F-150 is one of the top-selling vehicles for the manufacture and Ford has ensured that the sales are not let down by substandard safety measures. The truck has been well-equipped with a host of safety features and has earned respectable scores from federal agencies. Unlike previous years, all the advanced safety systems are now standard for all trims, part of Ford's Co-Pilot 360 suite of safety systems. That said, the F-150 Regular Cab has only been crash-tested by NHTSA where it got an overall safety rating of four out of five stars which is decent for a pickup.

Safety Features:

  • Front Collision Warning
  • Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Pedestrian Detection
  • Curve Control
  • Available rear parking sensors

2020 Ford F-150 vs 2020 RAM 1500

The RAM 1500 has always been a tough rival for the F-150. The RAM 1500 has butch looks and when well-equipped can prove to be a very competent workhorse. Although the priority of the RAM 1500 is more towards comfort and style thus making them more of a lifestyle pick and less of a workhorse.

The reason we say so is that neither the RAM 1500 can tow nor haul as much as the F-150 and yet delivers lesser gas mileage, especially in pure city driving conditions. That said, both the trucks have their own strong points and the choice boils down to personal preference rather than individual merit.

2020 Ford F-150 vs 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is one of the more futuristic-looking trucks amongst the rivals. The vehicle features a rock-solid and sturdy built. The cabin is nice to look at and even comfortable for the passengers, but, the F-150's cabin is certainly the more modern one, both inside and outside.

The Silverado 1500 is a capable workhorse and even in the base form can tow and carry more load than a similar specced F-150. This can be attributed to the fact that the Silverado 1500 gets a more torquey engine than the F-150 but on the downside, the F-150 offers better gas mileage. So choosing one over the other definitely depends on your requirements.

Final Verdict
7.9/10

The 2020 Ford F-150 is one of the top trucks currently on sale on American soil and is home-bred too. It's an extremely capable truck, the best in the class actually, owing to its long list of features, a spacious and comfortable cabin, several engine options, and last but not least, capturing looks. If you want a comfortable yet rugged vehicle for your needs, the F-150 thus remains a great choice.

              Great vehicle

Pros - ["Fuel economy", "Comfortable", "Good performance"]

Cons - ["High maintenance costs", "Regular recalls", "Cheap interior"]

The pickup truck is really great and love to drive. The fuel economy is really good. Very comfortable when going for a very long drive very spacious. The mileage is great. The only downside is constant repairs and recalls makes it difficult.
